Underneath His Skin
“Chapter 6”
-----^^---^^-----^^-----^^------
Harry was able to slink away from Draco’s view as he hurriedly made his way down the spiral staircase. Ron tried to keep up with him, but when Harry reached the corridor, he swiftly hid himself within the crowd. Ron stopped at the bottom of the stairs, catching his breath.
“I lost him,” He said as Hermione and Ginny appeared by his side.
“He’s trying to stay away from Malfoy,” Hermione stated.
“Now what gave you that idea?” Ron sardonically asked.
Hermione glared at him.
“Well, my next class is this way. I’ll see you all at lunch,” Ginny said, disappearing within the crowd.
“I’m sure Harry is already in Arithmancy, we should head over there,” Hermione began to push her way through the crowd.
“Tell your friend, Potter, that he can run all he wants… but he won’t be able to hide, or escape from me,” Malfoy smugly said.
Ron took one look at Malfoy and flinched back.
“Harr-er, Malfoy!”
The brunette Slytherin laughed.
“Still getting used to this, I see. Well, don’t think you and I can be friends just because I look like him. Now out of my way! Damn Weasley,” Malfoy shoved Ron aside as he made his way through the crowd.
Ron sighed in defeat while glaring at Malfoy. It was odd feeling resentment toward Harry’s form like that, but he shook off the feeling and went to Arithmacy.
When Hermione entered the near empty classroom, she saw Harry was sitting at his assigned seat, which was between her and Ron’s. The distraught blonde rested his forehead against the palm of his hand, trying to hide his face from his surroundings.
“You okay?” She asked as she took her seat.
“Are they still looking?” The blonde asked, nodding his head toward the front row.
Hermione looked up and saw a trio of Hufflepuff girls giggling in their seats. One of them turned around, and blushed as she looked at Harry.
“It’s no big deal, Harry,” Hermione clarified.
“They were staring at me the whole time I was here!” Harry kept his voice down to a whisper.
“They’re just part of your fan club,” Hermione let out.
Harry quickly sat up.
“Fan club? I have a fan club?”
Hermione let out a chuckle.
“Of course you do! You and Malfoy do actually. You just never noticed because you were too busy with Voldemort and certain other things… like Quidditch,”
Harry felt a grin come across his face.
I have a fan club… I wonder how big it is?
“Well you don’t have to be all smug about it!” Hermione teased.
“I’m not smug!” The blonde denied.
“Smug about what?” Ron asked, taking his seat.
“Harry didn’t know about his little fan club,” Hermione smiled as she said this.
“It’s little?” Harry asked.
Hermione nudged him in the ribs.
“OW! Sorry, I’m just curious,” Harry admitted while still grinning.
“It’s gotten bigger after you defeated Voldemort. I’m not sure how many members there are, but I would guess that it’s half the school?”
Harry ran his hand through his blonde hair.
“I’m guessing the other half is Malfoy’s?” he questioned.
“Yeah pretty much… the ‘Draco Malfoy fan club’. Sounds sort of cheesy if you ask me… Gosh, stop smiling like that! It’s bad enough that you’re stuck in his body!” Ron complained.
“You say it like I can change it,” the blonde pointed out.
“Well, it is a bit creepy, sitting here beside you when you look like your rival,”
“Don’t you think I know that!?”
“Harry?!”
Harry quickly looked to the front of the class, where the gawking group of girls was sitting. They all blushed and giggled loudly at catching Harry’s attention, before swiftly turning away from him. Harry smiled widely, even though deep inside, he dreaded the sudden attention.
“Your personality mixed with Malfoy’s appearance is definitely adding more ratings,” Hermione chuckled.
“I bet Malfoy’s fan club is getting the same results,” Ron drawled out.
‘And the weird part is that I’m one of his fans…’ Harry thought, feeling slightly warm inside as those words processed inside his head.
“Oh, I almost forgot… Harry, I was thinking about us going to the library during our break,” Hermione quickly stated.
Harry forced his attention back to her,
“Sure. Sounds good,” He nodded.
“You still think it has something to do with spirits?” Ron asked.
“I’m not 100% sure, but that’s why we’re going over there,”
“Well, I hate researching, but I’m sure this topic would be worth the gathering of books,” Ron sighed.
The next few classes were unusually quiet, except for some group of giggling girls, and Harry couldn’t be happier to be out of the public’s view and into the library when their independent time arrived. Hermione immediately sent Harry and Ron to look around in the Researched Spirits category, while she wondered off to the index cards that contained book titles from the higher shelves. The two boys looked at each other and shrugged; they knew better than to question her researching methods… Ron was lazily scanning the book titles, not exactly sure of what they were looking for. Harry was aimlessly looking at different book titles, feeling a bit hopeless at the unrelated subjects that each book mentioned. After several minutes of silenced searching, Ron came across a book that caught his interest.
“Hey Harry, check this out,”
Harry looked over Ron’s shoulder.
“The ‘Banished Spirits’? How is that even possible?” Harry asked.
“Don’t know… But I have a feeling that Malfoy’s spirit may be in there somewhere,” Ron teased.
Harry chuckled, not sure if that joke even made sense. Just then, Hermione yanked out a card and summoned a book from one of the top shelves.
“I think I found something. What did you two find?” She asked.
“Banished Spirits,” Ron replied.
Both boys snickered. Hermione sighed and just sat down at the desk. She retrieved the book that settled on the desk in front of her and flipped to the index page. Ron and Harry sat down at the desk, anxious to see what Hermione may have found. Hermione flipped through a few more pages and quickly skimmed through the page. Harry turned to Ron, who was still examining the ‘Banished Spirits’ book. The blonde smiled at Ron’s unusual curiosity.
“Well…” Hermione set the book down.
“Oh… great, what did you find out?” Harry and Ron leaned in closer.
Hermione rested her hands on her lap.
“Nothing useful, they just stated that spirits often remain on earth to try and complete some unfinished business… whether it be revenge, or a certain task that he or she wants done, before they cross over,”
“Luna already said that in the Flying Carriages,” Ron added.
“Yes. It also says that most spirits can have a strong attachment to something that often prevents them from crossing over. I’m not too sure if that’s what you and Malfoy are going through, but I think there’s another way to help figure this whole thing out,” Hermione suggested, pointing to the bottom sentence.
-For more information about Spirits and their Possessions, look up Dr. WindFlitz’s ‘Waking As Another’…
Harry brushed a strand of blonde hair out of his face as he finished reading the text.
“That sounds a bit extreme,” he admitted.
“No offense, Harry, but what you’re going through DOES fit that category,” Ron let out.
Harry sighed and leaned back in the chair.
“Fine. So where is this book of Dr. WindFlitz?”
“We should look in the catalog, come on,” Hermione hurriedly stood up from her seat.
Harry and Ron rolled their eyes and slowly followed the anxious Hermione. They walked up to the front desk and Hermione opened a rather large, blank book. Harry and Ron eyed it curiously as Hermione grabbed the quill and began to write the book title and the author. The black ink slowly disappeared and another set of words appeared; -- ‘Spiritual Mysteries – Restricted Section’
“Damn it!” Ron exclaimed.
“Calm down, we can still get it,” Hermione said, closing the book.
“Oh yeah, and how do we do that?!” Harry asked.
Hermione made sure that the librarian was out of sight, before withdrawing her wand.
“Hermione! What are you doing?!” Harry jumped back.
“Have you forgotten that I breached the Restricted Section before?” She asked, eyeing Ron as she said it.
Ron just smiled and turned to Harry.
“She’s got a point,” The redhead added,
Hermione pulled out her letter from Professor Lockhart, which was dated two years ago, and pointed her wand to the letter. She whispered a few quick words and her wand lit up. The date on the letter slowly changed to the present date. Harry’s silver eyes went wide.
“You really do scare me sometimes, ‘Mione,”
“I’ll take that as a compliment, and its rather weird hearing it come from Mafloy’s voice,” Hermione pointed out.
Harry covered his mouth, but Ron’s laughter made him reconsider the gesture.
“Come on, the rope will let us cross if we present the letter,”
The trio headed to the rope that divided the library from the Restricted Section, and Hermione held the letter out in front of her, forcing the magic seal to pull the rope aside, and allow the trio of friends to enter the section.
“I think the ‘Spiritual Mysteries’ are down here,” Hermione pointed to the third aisle.
They walked down the aisle and Hermione began to shuffle through the index cards. Ron looked astounded with the fancy book titles, which glowed and floated against the spine of the book. Harry eyed a certain book that seemed to be breathing. He thought about examining it, but after remembering his past encounter with a restricted book from one of these shelves, he decided against it…
‘It might end up sucking me into the black abyss this time…’
“Here it is!”
Hermione summoned a thick, black book down to their level. Harry cautiously watched it, hoping that it wouldn’t do anything out of the ordinary. Hermione placed the book down onto the desk and began to flip through the pages. The blonde kept his distance, but he was able to see the section titles, particularly one that Hermione stopped at. Harry creased his eyebrows together, and blinked a few times, making sure he read the title correctly.
“Pos-Possession of Spirits… What the?!” Harry shouted.
Ron wasn’t sure about what had just happened, but he stood up as well and instinctively glanced around to see if anyone else was around.
“Harry, calm down,” Hermione tried to ease the nervous blonde.
“No! No, I mean, you think that I’m… possessed?!”
Ron understood his friend’s outburst this time, and immediately took his side.
“Hermione, there is no way that-“
“Harry and Malfoy are alive and well… Malfoy’s body is able to function because of Harry’s spirit. If that’s not possession, then I don’t know what is,” She explained, not looking away from the book.
“But I thought… I thought possessions were more… demonic or something weird like that,” Harry countered.
“That’s what muggles believe. Here in the Wizarding world, it’s almost as harmless as using the Polyjuice potion… Only, it’s the spirit, and not the complete body taking over… You understand?”
“No,” both Ron and Harry replied.
Hermione put the book down.
“Look. You know about that ‘demonic possession’ as you call it, because of Voldemort. He was able to see through your eyes and read your thoughts because he was apart of you… so to speak. And you were able to do the same with him; that is a Dark Possession, its name is used when the possessor is using the technique for dark purposes. Not to mention, the technique itself is considered dark, because Voldemort was able to perform this by trying to kill you, hence the scar connected you both so that he could use you for various reasons... It’s rare, but not ignored. Another possession is the Spiritual Possession, which is when a spirit ends up ‘sharing’ a body with the original owner. These are common, but only when the spirit desperately needs the body to fulfill its unfinished business. It’s usually harmless, but only when the spirit is harmless too. Actually, do you know about the Split-Personality Disorders?”
Harry nodded.
“Well, as a muggle, it’s a psychological disorder… but it’s really the possession of a spirit. A person could be possessed by more than seven spirits, but that’s a rare case,”
Ron and Harry gulped, surprised at Hermione’s knowledge of this information.
“There is no actual facts about what you and Malfoy are going through, but I think its similar with the Spiritual Possession, considering your spirits did come back,”
“Yeah, but in the wrong body,” Ron whispered.
“Exactly—“
Before Hermione could finish, the bell for lunch went off.
“That’s our cue,” Ron said, scurrying to leave the room.
“Ron!” Hermione quickly rose from her chair.
“What?”
“Shouldn’t we keep researching?” She asked.
“We can do it later, I’m hungry! I’m sure Harry is hungry too,” Ron complained.
Hermione turned to Harry, who only shrugged and followed behind Ron.
“Fine, but I’m taking the book with me,”
“Fine by us,” Ron laughed.
The trio quickly left the library and headed to the Great Hall.

Meanwhile, Draco was leaning against the stone archway, hiding within the shadows. He scanned amongst the people who were aimlessly walking around the courtyard’s perimeter, sitting at the benches, lounging on the stone hedges, and cuddling on the stone steps. After realizing that Harry wasn’t anywhere in sight, he quickly turned around towards the corridor, but he was stopped short after coming face to face with Pansy.
“Who are you looking for?” she asked.
“Out of my way!” Draco pushed her aside, “Didn’t I tell you to leave me be?! And who told you where I was?!”
“She followed me here,” Blaise calmly blurted out as he peaked around the other side of the archway.
“That doesn’t give her the right to… never mind… Parkinson, get lost!” he shouted.
Pansy grimaced and strolled down the corridor, fighting back the frustrated tears that were about to form. Blaise sat himself on the stone hedge, while Draco rested his folded arms on top of it, watching the noisy crowd move about.
“You know why she keeps coming around, don’t you?”
Draco rolled his eyes but kept his glance out toward the courtyard.
“Of course I know… I just don’t bloody care anymore. It was a one-time thing and nothing more. I already got over it,” The brunette answered.
Blaise sighed and started to watch three Ravenclaw girls walk across the courtyard, laughing and shouting about random topics. Draco arched an eyebrow and slowly turned to Blaise, who still kept his eyes on the passing girls.
“What’s so amusing?” Draco asked, leaning more over the stone hedge.
“Nothing,” Blaise stated as he turned away.
Draco creased his eyebrows together as he watched the trio of Ravenclaw girls walk past them. One of them, who appeared to be Asian, made eye contact with him, but only for a split second, before she quickly turned away. Draco recognized her as Harry’s ex-girlfriend, Cho Chang. He could feel something towards her, like a certain interest of some kind, even though he never paid any attention to her before... ever. After he cut eye contact with her, the feeling quickly disappeared. He shook the confusion away and looked at Blaise.
“Ahhh, Ravenclaw girls… You always did have a soft spot for them twats,” Draco teased as soon as the girls where a good distance away.
“It’s not like that,” Blaise stated as he jumped off of the stoned hedge.
Draco turned away and smirked.
“I wonder how your father would take this? Personally, I don’t give a damn about who you cuddle up against, but it’s rather odd that you’re more attracted to them Cravenclaw girls than you are with the Slytherin lot,” The brunette observed.
“Stepfather… and is it that obvious?” Blaise asked.
“Yes it’s that bloody obvious! However, I like the mild controversy,”
“You would,”
Malfoy chuckled.
“Don’t expect me to back you up whenever your stepfather finds out. You know how I am,”
“I don’t expect anything more, or less from you. This is my battle,”
“Damn right it is,”
Blaise looked at Draco from the side. He eyed the way Draco walked and presented himself as they walked through the corridor. Even though it was Harry’s body walking next to him, he could tell that it was now Draco who took over.
A few seconds later, the lunch bell towed throughout the corridors. Draco sighed and straightened himself up.
“Well, I’m sure the rest of the day would be interesting,” Draco let out.
“You almost sound hopeful. What’s on your mind?” Blaise asked.
Draco shot a glare at him,
“What’s on my mind?! Nothing is on my mind! And I’m not trying to sound hopeful…” Draco began to stalk down the corridor again, feeling frustrated with not only his friend’s behavior, but with his own.

When Harry attempted to sit down at the Gryffindor table, his housemates scooted away again. Hermione rolled her eyes and encouraged Harry to take his seat. The frustrated blonde sat down and eyed the food, expecting the same feelings from this morning to take effect again…
“Would you give it a rest already? It’s lunch time after all!” Ron argued.
“It’s never a bad time to read a book, Ron!” Hermione countered.
Harry chuckled, but stayed out of the argument. When the feeling from this morning finally dissipated, Harry finally reached for the grilled cheese sandwich without any problems at all.
‘Yes!’
Harry anxiously took a bite of his sandwich, and he started to feel like his old self again.
‘Excellent, I thought I’d have to deal with the sudden change in eating habits all day!’
After a few more minutes of personal satisfaction, Harry heard the voices in the room get lower. He looked up out of curiosity, and saw that everyone was looking toward the Hall’s entrance. He glanced in the same direction, and made eye contact with Draco. Harry’s heart started to race, and he felt a blush start to form.
“Even when he’s stuck in your body, he’s till able to make an entrance without even trying,” Ron said with an angry tone.
Harry turned to Ron and let out a light chuckle, trying to distract himself from Draco’s piercing eyes. The room soon broke out into loud conversations as Draco went to his usual seat. Harry felt like he was frozen in place as he watched Draco laugh with his surrounding housemates. The blonde took another bite of his sandwich, completely oblivious to the people surrounding him as he continued to watch Draco.
“Harry!”
Harry jumped out of his distraction and turned to Hermione.
“What?”
“It says here that most possessors tend to go through changes that aren’t recognizable to them,”
“No duh, the body is a dead give away!” Ron scoffed.
“Yes exactly! That’s what I was trying to explain to you both earlier,”
Harry and Ron gave each other confused looks, before looking back at Hermione.
“Because the spirit is in another body, they will experience certain habits, or feelings that the body would usually go through,”
“HUH?!”
Hermione rolled her eyes.
“Harry. Have you noticed anything a bit odd about yourself?” She asked.
“Uh… no?”
“Nothing at all? No change in your eating habits, certain thoughts you never thought before?”
Harry thought about breakfast, and remembered his odd cravings for fruit.
“Well, during breakfast, I tried reaching for the toast, but all of a sudden, I had this strong craving for fruit instead… Fresh fruit,” He explained.
“Wow! That’s brilliant!” Hermione exclaimed.
“How is that ‘brilliant’?” Ron scoffed.
“I’m getting to that point. Harry, what else did you feel that was unusual?”
Harry pondered on the question, but he couldn’t seem to find anything that would link him to anything else that was peculiar…
“That’s it, I guess,”
Hermione nodded.
“Well, I think you’re in full control of Malfoy’s body, but not of his previous habits or emotions. You felt the craving for fruit this morning, because it is something that Malfoy is familiar with, I think that’s how it works. His mind is not the same as yours, so I’d actually be surprised if you didn’t experience anything that was different, or odd to you,”
“Oh great. Don’t tell me that he’s going to wonder around the corridors and start bullying people,” Ron whined.
“I don’t think so. His thinking habits may affect him, but Harry is still in control. I think only small habits may occur,” Hermione clarified.
“If I start calling you names any time soon, you each have the right to curse me,” Harry said, before drinking from his goblet.
“I doubt it’ll get that far,” Hermione stated.
“You think Malfoy knows about this stuff?” Harry asked.
“So what if he doesn’t? Make him suffer the mild confusion!” Ron exclaimed.
Harry wasn’t too happy about that, but he didn’t want to argue with Ron…
