As she entered the Great Hall for the first time in what felt like years, though it had only been months, Hermione was inundated with found memories of spending her meals planning, plotting, and discussing with Harry and Ron. The thought of them made her heart sink, and no matter how she tried to rationalize it, she could not understand why Harry didn't recall the world before her wish changed it. He had been there, right beside her, it made absolutely no sense.
Making her way to the Gryffindor table, she suddenly realized that it never occurred to her that in this new reality she might have been sorted into a different house, she'd always thought of herself as a Gryffindor, and thankfully the sorting had had considered her courageous enough in this new world to place her in her house.
Sitting in an empty seat, she set about the task of filling her plate with eggs, sausage and toast, trying not to think about the fact that she didn't even know if she had friends in her own house, or who those friends would be.
"Morning Hermione." Came a familiar and friendly female voice that made Hermione sigh in relief. "Sorry about my brother last night. He was being a real prat." Ginny stated as she sat down next to her.
"It's fine." Hermione managed, feeling a twinge of pain shot through her at the thought of how much Ron had changed.
"So how is the illustrious, handsome and all too quiet and secretive Draco Malfoy after the little tussle he had with Harry and Ron?" Ginny pressed.
Hermione's eyes drifted across the hall to where Draco was sitting, talking pleasantly with Nott and Zabini. The black eye he had the night before was covered in a glamor, leaving his skin as pale and flawless as ever. "He's fine." She finally answered.
"That's good to hear. He really is Delicious. I can't believe you haven't even tried to get with him."
Hermione sputtered, nearly choking on her pumpkin juice. However she was saved from further humiliating conversation as Harry, Ron, Neville, Lavender, and a girl Hermione had never seen before joined them at the table.
Harry sat directly across from her, obscuring her view of Draco, Ron placed himself at Harry's left, Lavender moving to sit beside him. The unknown girl sat across from Ginny,
Neville moving to sit beside the redhead, giving her a soft peck on the cheek as he did so.
The relative silence that Hermione had enjoyed when she first sat down for breakfast was shattered as the group began several separate conversations all at once.
"You left without me Gin." The unknown girl pouted, as she pushed stray strands of silky black hair behind her ear. "So unfair."
"Oi, Neville, hands off the sister. I don't want to see that." Ron groused, with a scowl.
"Good morning Granger." Harry said with a coy smile.
"You were taking forever." Ginny responded to the dark haired girl, then she turned to Ron. "He can kiss me any time he chooses Ron, he IS my boyfriend after all."
"I was not." The dark haired girl continued to pout.
"I don't need to see my little sister getting snogged by one of my best mates Ginny." Ron retorted.
"You were actually taking a pretty long time to get ready Becka." Harry offered to the dark haired girl at his right.
"See?" Ginny asked pointedly to Becka before she turned to Neville and kissed him square on the mouth.
"Not as long as Lavender always takes." Becka huffed, which caused Lavender to let out a small cry of indignation.
"Ginny!" Ron practically bellowed at the sight of the kiss.
"Just sit down and eat breakfast Ron. She's only doing it to get under your skin." Harry advised, filling his own plate with food.
"It's working." Ron grumbled as he turned his eyes to the food Lavender had been piling onto his plate for him.
Neville said nothing the entire time, but looked rather amused at the ongoings.
Just as things began to settle down around her, the air was filled with owls, Brown, white, black and speckled birds swooped around the room, each finding their intended target before delivering their parcel.
A large grey speckled owl landed in the center of the table, a letter clutched in it's beak.
Becka sighed and took the letter. "We just started back. What on earth could daddy be writing to me about so soon?"
Harry chuckled and fed the bird a bit of sausage. "Maybe Sirius wants to make sure his little girl is okay." He teased.
Hermione held back her shock as she looked at the girl, it made sense that Sirius would marry and have children, she knew she shouldn't have been as surprised as she was at the sight of that child though.
Becka let out another exaggerated sigh as she read over the letter. "He's just reminding me to stay out of trouble, seems a certain someone who got in trouble yesterday had his parents informed. And he wants to make sure I'm not getting involved in any of your pranks or other misdeeds."
Harry frowned and took the letter from her, scanning it over. "I swear Sirius is such a hard ass sometimes. You would think, I mean, he was one of the first Marauders. He should understand a good prank."
"Oh daddy understands a good prank all right. But he also thinks that good pranks can lead to bad consequences. Plus, mother would string him up and hex his balls off if he encouraged us to cause trouble."
Harry chuckled as he crumbled the letter. "That's the long of it, it's not Sirius, it's your Mum."
Hermione tried not to watch the interaction between the two, concentrating instead on her plate. More questions were piling up in her head the longer she was around these people, and she was pretty sure if it kept up her brains would start leaking out of her ears.
"G- What are you doing?" She gasped out.
"You shouldn't do that with your hair. You have such pretty hair." Ginny stated as she drew her wand. With a flick of her wrist and a quick spell Hermione's hair cascaded in soft gentle curls down her back. "There, much better."
"Umm, thank you."
"I wish I had naturally curly hair." Becka said suddenly. "Yours always looks so pretty Hermione."
Ginny smiled at Becka and then picked up a lock of Hermione's hair from her shoulder and smelled it. "Oh pretty. Neville, you have to smell Hermione, she smells like a sweet."
Hermione felt herself blush and then turn a much brighter shade of red when Neville leaned over Ginny and inhaled deeply just centimeters from her neck. "You're right Gin." He stated, sitting back.
Harry scowled at Neville, who only smirked and shrugged in return."
Hermione's mouth was dry, her brain was spinning in circles, too much was going on too fast. She had no idea if this sort of banter was normal, how she should react to being sniffed by Ginny and Neville. Standing she stuttered her good-byes and practically ran from the Great Hall.
Out in the hall she forced herself to stop and take a deep breath. It's okay Hermione, everything is okay. You are going to figure out how to fix this. She told herself. Pulling out her course schedule she scanned her classes. Potions was the first class of the day, it was still half an hour before the class would start, she could go to the library and start looking for books on the wishing gem. Even if she didn't have time to begin her research she could at least find the books.
"Hermione!" Draco's voice broke through her thoughts as he crossed the hall toward her. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine." She managed, her cheeks flushing in embarrassment. "I just wanted to go to the library before class." It wasn't exactly a lie.
Draco eyed her for a moment and then smiled. "I'll go with you." He offered.
Hermione bit her lip, she really didn't want anyone to see what she was researching, and the idea of spending time alone with Draco Malfoy in the library caused her fading blush to return full force. She still wasn't sure exactly what kind of relationship she and Draco had. Finally she nodded. Draco had always been smart, coming in second for high marks in every class they took together, if she played her cards right she might be able to enlist his help without actually telling him what she was looking for or why.
He smiled and nodded in return and the two walked in silence up to the library.
"So what are we looking for 'Mione?" Draco asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Draco scowled, and for a moment he looked very much like the Malfoy she remembered. "What did Potter do Hermione?" His voice was laced with anger.
He didn't seem satisfied with the answer, but Hermione was thankful he didn't push the subject.
The two roamed the shelves silently, Hermione looking for anything dealing with wish or time magic, but time passed far too quickly for her liking, and before she knew it they had to leave and hurry to their first class.
There was something comforting about walking into the stale dungeons, and sitting at the warn tables that smelled of potion ingredients. It was even nice to see Professor Snape billow into the room look annoyed.
"Advanced Potion work is not for the weak of heart, nor is it for those who lack intelligence." He stated, his gaze lingering on the table where Harry, Ron and Neville were sitting. "That being said, who can tell me what potions involve the use of Jobberknoll feathers?"
Instinctively Hermione's hand shot up, the answer of the tip of her tongue.
"Jobberknoll feathers are used is most if not all memory and truth potions." Hermione answered.
"Very good Ms. Granger." Snape stated evenly. "Five points for Gryffindor as at least someone did their required summer reading."
Hermione was taken back, the Snape she knew despised her, but this version seemed to be on friendlier terms.
"Now then," he said, pointing his wand at the empty chalk board, "Everyone split into pairs and brew this potion by end of class." Instructions formed on the board, and everyone in the class moved around to form several groups of two.
Before Hermione could move to find a partner Neville pulled up a chair beside her and smiled. "Hope you don't mind Hermione. There are only two people in this class that are really good at potions, seems Malfoy already got roped in with Nott, and I need all the help I can get."
Hermione tried not to think about the way he had inhaled her sent at breakfast and just nodded. "Why are you even taking potions this year?" She asked.
"I have to do well in potions and herbology NEWTS in order to study to be a healer." He responded.
Hermione nodded and stood. "I'll get the ingredients if you set up the cauldron."
He smiled and let her past him.
Hermione practically ran to the supply closet to get the ingredients, she wasn't sure what to think of the new Neville. He was quiet, but when he did speak he didn't trip over his words. He was practically charming, in a strange sensual way. As she reached for the last thing she would need for the potion she felt someone else brush against her.
"Imagine bumping into you here." She heard Harry whisper, his breath causing the hair near her ear to sway.
Jumping she spun around to look at him, "Ha- Potter!" She squeaked, barely catching herself before calling him by his first name.
He smiled at her, his green eyes dancing dangerously. "You can say it. Come on, call me Harry." His voice never rose an octave as he spoke.
"Please get out of my way Potter."
"Neville and Ginny said you must have changed soaps, that you smell like sweets. I just had to come smell you for myself."
She frowned and pushed past him before snarling, "What I smell like is not of your concern." Angry at herself for having made the stupid wish that changed her best friend, and angry at him for attempting to seduce her she returned to her seat and angrily dropped the ingredients on the table.
Neville raised an eyebrow, but didn't say anything.
Working in silence, Hermione tried to push the thoughts out of her mind. But the anger and confusion she felt at the world she had created finally got the better of her and she turned to Neville. "Why did you decide to smell me today at breakfast?"
He chuckled slightly and looked up from the roots he was cutting. "Ginny said you smelled good."
"But you and Ginny are dating. You shouldn't be acting like that toward other women." She scolded.
"Ginny and I have a good thing. We love each other, have ever since we were kids. But we both know love and sex are two different animals." He replied, his voice dropping as he explained. "There is nothing wrong in enjoying the opposite sex, or in Ginny's case even the same sex. She'd jump Malfoy's bones in an instant if you'd let her."
Hermione stared at him slack jawed for a moment before finally managing a response, "Why would Ginny need my permission to go after Draco?"
Neville laughed, before leveling her with a sly and seductive smile. "Everyone knows you two are into each other. No matter how many times you claim you're just friends. And Ginny's not the kind to step on toes."
Hermione thought her heart was going to stop mid-beat. Neville Longbottom, the sweet, shy, sweet boy she had known had been replaced with a confident, sexual inelegant man. She really wasn't sure if it was a good thing or not. Trying to turn her thoughts away from the unspoken offer of sexual exploration she looked across the room to find Draco.
Draco never hits or hexes anyone. No matter how much they deserve it. Her mind whispered, as she recalled the entry in her journal that she had read the night before.
Neville looked over his shoulder and Draco, smiled and then turned back to Hermione. "See what I mean?"
"He's pissed at you."
"I'm not worried. Malfoy's a dog with no teeth. All bark, no bite."
Hermione frowned, the Malfoy she knew had a lot of bite, though he had always been more bark. "Why do you say he has no teeth?"
Neville's smile finally faded, as if he was thinking of something he found unpleasant. "It's not my place to tell you Hermione. Maybe one day he'll be straight with you about it, but until then, don't let Harry or Ron convince you that he's a coward because of it."
