Chapter Six

Ron stopped dead in his tracks at the sight of Harry staring out the window of his auror office. The harsh circles under his eyes in company with the ragged look of him, told the young Weasley more than he wanted to know. He hadn’t found Hermione, nor had Severus Snape. Harry would have told him otherwise, he reasoned. He closed the door quietly, going over to him.

“Ginny flooed me last night,” Ron said quietly. “Told me how you threw her out of your house.”

“I needed to think,” Harry muttered.

“Still do from the sound of you.” Ron leaned in close, making Harry look him in the eyes. “Don’t take it out on her, because you’re feeling sorry for Hermione.”

Harry blinked at him. “You think I feel pity for Hermione?”

“Yeah, who would have her other than me?” Ron asked arrogantly as he stood up straight. “What we have didn’t work. She needs to get over it.”

“And you don’t feel bad about hurting her?” the raven haired young man asked him. “You were supposedly in love with her. Ron, you said you loved her in a toast to her a month ago! I called her family at that very same function. And the best we did by her was shutting the door before we shagged.” Harry stood up, disbelief on his face. “I wanted love, but what I did, no, what we both did—it wasn't the way it should have been done.”

“Being gay isn’t wrong.”

“I wasn’t talking about that. Don’t you get it? We betrayed our closest, dearest friend and ally—and for what?”

“Our triad is strong,” Ron muttered.

“Really? I’m gay and so needy for love I’m willing to hurt the woman I called my sister to get it, your sister is so desperate to keep me that’s she’s willing to be in the same bed as her brother, and you…I don’t know about you.” This had Ron blinking at him in shock. “You’ve never committed to anything other than a screw and a meal with the latter winning out more times than not.”

“But…”

“Okay, just answer one question and I’ll let all of this drop,” Harry said and received a nod. “Are you gay?”

Ron’s face went a vivid red.

“Are you, Ron? Because let me tell you if you are, I want to fuck you…”

“No,” he finally answered. “I don’t do anal, not my ass at least.”

“Then chances are that you aren’t gay,” Harry told him. “And we are no where near being a triad.”

Ron closed his eyes and sat down hard. “We fucked up.”

“No shit,” Harry whispered, feeling the pain of what they had done all the more. “Hermione was right.”

Frowning Ron asked, “About what exactly? She’s called a know it all for a reason.”

Laughing bitterly, he told his friend, “I do feel cursed.”

The moment Draco walked into his father’s study he knew that something big had happened.

Snape got up from his chair, went straight over to him, and snarled, “Where is she?”

“Whom are you speaking of?” he was barely able to get out. “You used a vague…” This only had Severus’s hand going tighter. “Oh that she!” He tried to pull his godfather’s hand from his throat, but failed. “She’s over with Rabastan LeStrange at his hideout.” The other man released him, nearly dropping Draco to the floor.

Frowning Lucius said, “Don’t tell me that he’s using that old castle in Romania …”

“Is there a way to floo there from here?” Severus cut him off.

“As a matter of fact there is,” his friend told him. “But why on earth would she want to spend any time whatsoever with a death eater on the run?”

“Show me how to get there and you’ll get all the answers you need,” Severus told him.

A floo ride later and Severus was charging through the castle, looking for the witch. When he found the dining area, he saw her at the table picking at her food. Hermione looked up slowly.

“Severus,” she breathed. Getting up, she flew into his arms. “You found me!”

The dower potions master then had all the others there in shock as he began peppering her face with kisses. “Merlin, witch, I’ve been worried sick about you.”

This was about the time that he took note of everyone watching them. Rabastan and Regulus were chuckling even as Lucius just stood there stunned. Clearing his throat, he pushed her slightly back as he took a step away from her as well. He cleared his throat again, muttering, “What are you doing here with the likes of these two reprobates, Miss Granger?”

Hermione smiled imperceptibly. “You were worried about me.”

“Well, of course I was,” he muttered, crossing his arms and looking away from her as he tried not to grab a hold of her again.

“Severus,” she whispered, moving closer to him. “Please look at me.”

He did so hesitantly.

“It’s over between me and Ronald. Neat and easy wasn’t what I thought it would be.” She swallowed thickly. “I was wrong. So very wrong…I’m…sorry. You deserved better than a little girl wanting the easy way out.” He caught her as she began to sink to her knees in emotional exhaustion. “Please forgive me.”

“Of course I do,” he breathed, combing her hair back from her face. “Don’t cry, love. It pains me to see you hurt so.” He rubbed away her tears with his thumbs. “You look worn out. Have you slept at all?

“Some,” she whispered haggardly. “More than anything…I need to…eat.” Hermione turned slowly to face Lucius Malfoy.

“Miss Granger,” the elder Malfoy said in cool greeting. “I must say that it’s a rather odd day when I see one of the Golden Trio here among runaway death eaters.”

When Hermione took a step towards him, Severus pulled her back hard against his body. “No, it’ll wait. Miss Granger must eat and rest first. What good will she be if she is too dead to work for you?”

“What is going on here?” Lucius asked, genuinely confused.

“Look at her eyes,” Rabastan told him. “See anything different?”

“It is his time,” she said, but the voice was too deep and rusted to belong to the muggleborn witch.

“She’s been doing as you’ve asked,” Rabastan said. “Allow her to rest!”

It was then that the blond wizard saw what the other wizard spoke of. Granger’s eyes were pitch black with no whites to be seen. Her body quaked and soon she was falling backwards against Snape. It took help from Rabastan to get her to one of the guest rooms with Severus walking quickly behind them.

Frowning Lucius turned to his son. “What is going on here?”

“Something tells me that you’ll never believe what your son may have to say,” Regulus said as he joined them. “Because it’s far more surreal than anything you could possibly imagine.”
