The Snake and the Lion’s Magic Emporium
A/N: Hey, I’m so sorry it’s taken me so long to update this story, but for awhile there I lost my muse for this story. But I’m back and I cant promise anything, but I have the rest of the story outlined. So expect occasional updates. Well here, you go.
Anita sighed into her hand . Today, was so not her day.
she tapped her foot on the carpeted floor of her office at Animators Inc. She had come into work today knowing it was going to be a bad idea. But she had to work to do and quiting her job was not an option. First off, she refused to be Jean Claude’s ‘kept’ woman and second because if she didn't find a way to use her necromancer magic, it usually came back to bite her in the ass. Zombie road kill crawling into your apartment in the middle of the night was not cute and caused a lot of horrifying nightmares.
She had just gotten off the phone with a client, a Mrs. Reed. The woman’s husband had just died and all she cared about was the fact that “the rat bastard” hadn’t left her anything. After an hour long conversation with Mrs. Reed and her sleazy lawyer, Anita could better understand why Mr. Reed had indeed left his wife nothing. They had decided the raising would take place the next night and Anita happily hung up the phone and nursed her growing headache with two pills of Tylenol.
Usually, she would have just had the raising tonight, but tonight was a full moon and the first since the European weres had come to town and Anita wanted to be at the Lupanar with her pard and pack to see how the groups behaved themselves. Potter had informed her that himself and Draco would be bringing Millie with them, not trusting the girl with the tigers who would be making use of forested land Jean-Claude owned.
After filing away her few papers and cleaning the remains of her lunch off her desk, Anita decided it was time to head out. she left her office and walked over to the receptionist who was flirting shamelessly with Nathanial, who had come to pick Anita up. As soon as Anita got close Nathanial’s bright lavender eyes fell on her and she felt the love that he had for her wash over her.
“Hey Marge, tell the devil I’m taking off and if he sends anymore stuck up, insensitive gold diggers my way, that I’ll kick his ass.” She directed her comment to the closed office door of her former boss, now partner.
“Fuck you Anita” was the reply she got through the closed door.
“Umm,” Margie looked uncertain as to how to handle that exchange. Poor thing, this was her first week on the job, she didn't know what she was in for working here. “Have a good day Ms. Blake. Oh, and Nathanial, I really enjoyed your performance last night,” she blushed at Nathanial, smiling coyly at him.
“I’m glad you did Ms. Price, Good bye.” Nathanial gave her his award winning smile and followed Anita out the door.
All of her earlier frustrations were back. Why was it that everywhere she went with Nathanial, women always threw themselves at him? what was she? Chopped liver? She bet they’d still do it even if they were making out, just walk on up, separate the kiss and ask him out. Seriously, what was it with her men and being so damn gorgeous?
Anita was still sulking when they got to the car. Nathanial sighed, as he started the car, backing up and heading onto the road.
“Anita, let it go. She was just being friendly.”
“Friendly? Nathanial, she was raping you with her eyes!”
“Are you still going to be like this when we pick up Millie? Because if you are, we can reschedule for when your feeling a little more secure.
Anita was shocked at the tone Nathanial took, he was usually so understanding. “Millie really wants to spend time with you today, she really looks up to you. But if you’re just going to be angery, I’ll call Harry and tell him we can’t make it.”
Anita felt slightly ashamed, “No, I said I’d take the kid to the zoo, so I will. But I’m allowed to sulk while we get there.”
Nathanial flashed a smile at her, “only because you look so cute when you pout.”
“I will shoot you.”
“No you wont, you love me.” Nathanial stuck his tongue out at her.
Nothing else was said until they reached the riverfront and the address Potter had given them. Above the door was a sign in a funny font the said; The Lion and the serpent’s Magic Emporium.
The store front windows held strange silver instruments, signs on the window advertised magic books, potions, charms. a strange collection of dancing beans were featured in the next window, titled; Morty’s Malevolent Moody Beans. Already concerned, Anita lead the way into the store. The store was old, the dark wood floor creaked after every step. the walls were a dark green that added a homely atmosphere and the dark wood molding and baseboards added to that effect. inside were more people than she thought such a small store should be capable of holding. There were people everywhere, some she could feel a magic signature off of, some wizards, witches, animators, and weres. But the majority she noticed were human. There was a gaggle of girls gathered around a sign for love potions, little boys were running about with paper airplanes that actually flew. Anita looked at the register and saw the snake girl of Harry’s, Luna, checking out a distinguished looking man who was purchasing a brown paper bag that was wriggling suspiciously. The young snake boy was wearing an employ vest and informing an elderly lady that the brand of pickled newt eyes she was holding were not good for fire lizard burn salve, but rather Drought of the living dead and that he could find the brand she needed in the back.
Anita felt her frustration from earlier raise back into the front of her mind. And her anger just kept raising as Potter/Black, whoever, came sauntering over with a self satisfied smirk on his face. His faded jeans and blue button up were almost as disheveled as his black hair, which was saying something.
“Hey there Anita and Nat. What do you think of my shop?”
Anita glared at Potter, her black eyes glistening. “What do you think you are doing? more than half of the people in here are normal humans! Do you know how dangerous it is to give them magic? Half the crimes I investigate are because of this shit. I’m a U.S. Marshall dammit! there are laws against these types of stores. What’re you paying at?”
Potter looked taken aback by her anger, good, finally something to shake that cocky attitude of his.
But he soon recovered, his green eyes grew equally as dark as hers as he took a step forward, glaring. “Don’t insult my intelligence Ms. Blake. I'm not a fool. every non-magical person in here cant see the truly magical supplies and could not purchase them if they could.” He pointed to a strange purple orb floating on the check out desk. that is a special orb I invented. it glows purple if the customer is magical and red if they’re not. Everything that a non-magical person can buy in here is perfectly safe, watered down healing potions for headaches, good luck charms, protection charms. Don’t strive to discredit me Ms. Blake, I’m not the one who should be closely watched here, you are.”
Before Anita could retort a scoff came from behind them. They all turned to see a the tall blond man from the first meeting leaning against a door, sarcastically clapping his hands. “Bravo Potter, really. As if we all needed confirmation that you’re delusions of holier-than-thou were of epic proportions. I think we can both agree that at first glance this shop could look suspect.”
He puled himself of the door in a strange rolling of muscles that Anita was sure all were-animals were taught to perfect, and sauntered over to them. His green button up was in a much better state than Potters, the silk material tucked into his black jeans. He grinned at Anita and she felt the brush of his power as he extended his hand to her. “I’m afraid the circumstances in which we last met were quite unorthodox. Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Draco Malfoy. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Anita eyed him wearily before giving him her hand. He grinned at her and it made her heart miss a beat. He raised the hand to his lips and kissed the back of it.
Anita felt a spark go through her at the touch, but jerked her hand back with a glare. She hated when men did that, it pulled at the feminist inside her, like they were saying she was below them, and not worthy of a hand shake.
“Enough Draco.” said Potter, walking over to the other man. “And I’m not deluded.”
Draco laughed, breaking his concentration on Anita. Anita wasn't sure if Potter had seen what was happening, but another moment in Draco's presence and her control would have slipped.
“Of course not, Potter, of course not. Well, I think we’ve left you standing in the middle of the shop long enough, come upstairs and I’ll get Millie ready for you.” He turned to the door and opened in to show a flight of stairs leading up. “she’s talked of nothing else but the zoo since I told her you were taking her. If I hear one more ‘fun fact’ about giraffes or am forced to sing ‘the giraffe song’ again think I might cast a silencing spell on her.”
“Knowing her, she’d just proceed to draw them for you and insist you put the drawings on the fridge.” said Potter, grinning.
“She’s you’re child Potter, I don’t know why she insists I play with her instead. Then again, I am the better looking out of us, you’re pathetic excuse for hair probably frightens her to death.”
They reached the top of the stairs and entered what looked like a cosy living room. The couch was a deep red leather and the pillows on it were green, orange and yellow. there was a t.v. in front of it with a documentary about giraffes on. Millie was sitting in-front of the screen. she had on yellow rain boots with pink giraffes on them and pink leggings with purple polka dots on them. she also had a purple dress with a large yellow giraffe on it. She looked over at them when they came in, a huge grin showing her snaggle-toothed smile.
“Nat, Nat! Is it true are we gonna go see the giraffes today?” she had ran up to him and was now gazing up a him with large kitty eyes full of hope.
Nathanial smiled at her, “Yes, Anita and I are taking you to the zoo today. Are you ready?”
“Yay!” Millie’s grin grew tenth-fold. Anita wasn’t sure a child’s face to could grin that much without cramping. “I’m ready, I’m ready! Let’s go!”
“And just like that I’m forgotten and abandoned for some giraffe, life’s so cruel.” said Draco, a mock frown on his face.
“You’re not coming Draco?” said Millie, a frown on her face.
“No dearest, Harry and I are staying here, while you go have fun at the zoo.”
Millie looked saddened by that for all of a second before she seemed to remember she was going to the zoo and she bounced away, singing something about giraffes, only to come back with a pink sweater and yellow back pack.
Harry ruffled her hair as she passed by and knelt at her level. “Now Millie, remember, when you’re at the zoo you have to behave like a muggle, understand? No magc love, alright? I dont want to hear of any mishaps when you get back. If you do this for me I’ll get you an ice cream when you get back.”
“ok Daddy, I’ll be good.” Millie smiled sweetly at Potter, who grinned back.
“See you later.”
“Bye!” She then grabbed Nathanial’s hand and started dragging him out of the apartment.
Potter stood and looked at Anita, “you’ll have to watch her closely, she’s a real trouble maker that one.”
Draco laughed, “takes after her father with that one.” He pulled a wallet out of his back pocket, ‘here’s some money for the zoo. We’ll see you tonight Anita.”
Anita shook her head at the money, “No, the zoo was Nathanial’s treat. And don’t worry I’m sure we’ll be able to handle anything a seven -year-old could throw our way.” She nodded to them and let the apartment.
Little did she know that they would be talking about the pink giraffe at the zoo for a long time to follow.
