Severus pressed his palms against the shower wall and ducked his head
into the scalding water. He always liked his showers a little hotter
than was strictly necessary. The heat would ease some of the tension
out of his shoulders and back and the rolling patter from the shower
head created a meditative atmosphere that helped him block out the
rest of the world – if only for a short while.
'Lily.'
Voldemort was gone. He'd done his best to avenge her death, and
perhaps he had not done as well as he would have liked, but thought
that somehow, when it was all over, the misery his jaded past had
caused him would begin to ebb.
But it hadn't. He still felt the same heart sore lump in his throat
every time he was casually reminded that she was gone. He still felt
the silence where her laughter should be when he overheard a joke he
just knew she would love. He still remembered her striking red hair
and her green eyes and the way she would tilt her head ever so
slightly to the right when she smiled.
He still heard himself calling her a 'mudblood' thoughtlessly because
James Potter made him lose his mind right along with his temper, and
he still regretted it, among other things – so many other
things.
He wasn't a fool. He knew even in the best possible circumstances,
even in a world without James Potter, she would have never loved him
like he loved her, but so many years later it still hurt. He was
still so very, very alone.
'If only I'd died from Nagini's bite. I wouldn't still feel this
way.' He hated this
over-emotional teenager that sprung up in him every now and again.
He had become a powerful wizard! And yet, he still felt so much like
a lonely little boy who desperately craved affection, who would give
all of his magic up if that's what it took to love and be loved in
return.
It wasn't Ron's childish declaration that he had a thing for redheads
that bothered him. It wasn't even that the git was right. What
really got him is that until those words had passed the young man's
lips, he hadn't realized how delicately he'd been nursing him and his
ravaged stomach back to health. He hadn't realized that he'd been
growing unexpectedly attached.
And so, he'd behaved the way he
always behaved when he was afraid of his own feelings – he'd
recoiled, snapped viciously at the object of his attention. 'When
am I going to grow up? Will I continue to repeat these same trends
of behavior forever?' He
didn't want to die alone. He didn't want to live alone, either. But
he had so few options, and the ones he'd had to date were all far
worse than life as a hermit.
He turned off the shower and took a
deep breath. 'I have to apologize. My temper always gets
the better of me in these situations.'
But he could hardly get his tongue around the word 'apology', let
alone make one. Still, they would be here together until the middle
of December. If they were going to be chained together like this, he
had to do his best to at least assure they were on speaking terms. He
dried off and changed into his pajamas, quickly running a comb
through his hair and cleaning his teeth before pushing the door open
gingerly.
Ron had put the food tray aside to
the night stand and rolled over. He seemed to be soundly asleep. The
apology would have to wait. Severus climbed carefully into bed and
watched the back of Ron's head for a while. He really had grown into
a handsome young man, for what little it mattered, and though his
conversations with Ron over the past day had hardly been what he
might call intellectually stimulating, they were
entertaining. It was so nice just to have someone to talk to again.
He decided not to analyze his sudden affection for Ronald Weasley too
deeply. It was just nice to have company again, that was all. He
rolled over to face the door and whispered, “Nox” to the
quiet room. It was early, but it had been an exhausting day, and
sleep was about the only thing left he could do that wouldn't disturb
the young man on the other side of the bed.
But right when he was feeling settled, Ron, who hadn't been asleep at
all, said, “Snape?”
“Yes?” Snape asked tentatively.
“You really loved Harry's mum, huh?”
The understanding in Ron's question surprised him and he found
himself uncertain of how to answer. Just when Ron thought he
wouldn't get an answer at all, Snape said, “she was my reason
for existing.”
Ron's lips quirked into a bittersweet smile. “Reason for
existing, huh?” Ron echoed quietly. “You're kind of
lucky. Most people don't ever get to have something like that.”
“A reason to exist?” Snape asked even though he knew
exactly what Ron meant.
“Sure,” Ron said
quietly. “Something worth existing for.
I guess it just seems kind of comforting, to know why you're here.”
“A cold comfort at best,” Snape answered in that way a
person only answers questions late at night, in the dark.
“Yeah, guess so,” Ron answered.
“Go to sleep, Weasley.”
“G'night, Snape.” And on second thought he added.
“Pleasant dreams.”
Severus didn't think that was possible for him, but appreciated the
sentiment anyway. “Weasley.”
“Yeah?”
“I am
sorry, for what that is worth.”
He could hear the gentle smile on Ron's face when the redhead said,
“Yeah, me too.”
