Chapter 6: In the Forgotten Potions Room
The boys worked hard at finding a candle, in that terrible mess of a room it wasn't easy lifting potions bottles all covered in dust without breaking them, not to mention cauldrons that probably weighed more than they did. But Draco was the first one to find a candle. In fact he found a bunch of them in a drawer in a rather large cabinet.
"Finally” he said and a small smile played on his features that Harry had never seen.
He didn't think he'd ever seen a genuine smile coming from Draco that didn't spring from laughing at someone else's misfortune. It slowly dawned on him that he thought it was sweet, and that he would like to see Draco smiling more like that.
"What you staring at Potter?” Draco said looking rather suspiciously at Harry.
Harry snapped out of it, realizing at the same time that he'd been staring at Draco whilst he was thinking. “Uh, oh nothing.” Harry choked out, and it looked to Draco like he'd been taken by surprise.
“Good, you found the candles, let's light them up then” he said to change the subject and moved towards Draco, through stacks of junk all around him.
“Now, where to put them?” Draco said squinting his eyes looking about the room.
“Well if this is a standard Hogwarts room, even if it's as recent as from a hundred or so years back, there should be candle-holders at every corner of the room and one at every wall.” Harry said setting his green eyes on Draco's gray ones, which in this scarce light he noticed, looked ice blue. Draco sneered a little at this new and knowledgeable side of Harry.
“How did you know that?” Draco asked.
Harry smiled, remembering his friend on the outside of these walls probably studying 'Hogwarts A History' as he and Draco were speaking. “Hermione” he said and shook his head a little “she just goes on and on about Hogwarts A History, so I guess something was meant to stick.”
Draco nodded, eyebrows raised a little as he looked at Harry's peculiar expression. Was this the face one was supposed to have when one thinks about one's friends?
When Draco thought about his friends he just rolled his eyes, or grimaced a little, except when he thought of Pansy of course, but even then he didn't have that look on his face.
"Are you in love with her or something?” Draco asked blatantly.
Harry looked a little shocked. “No, she's with Ron”
"Yes, I know that, but that doesn't mean you can't still be in love with her”
"But I'm not. We're just friends that's all. Best friends.” Harry looked at Draco who was standing so close now that it was difficult not to notice his sheer beauty.
"Why do you ask?” Harry asked Draco feeling curious about him now.
Draco made a face and went for the candles taking a bunch of them in his free hand.
"You just looked so happy when you thought about her, I thought it might be something else between you. Plus you're always together.” Draco put some candles into Harry's hand and said “You take the right side and I take the left, so we can have some light in here at least.”
They started finding the candle-holders and giving the room some much needed light. “I'm not though” Harry said all of a sudden when the room had been lit and they were in perfect view of each other and the room.
"Huh?” Draco didn't understand “you're not what?”
"I'm not in love with her.” Harry said to make it perfectly clear, half to deny Draco the satisfaction of using it against him, so that he wouldn't spread lies about him and Hermione, and half because he really wanted Draco to know...somehow, he just wanted Draco to know. “Actually” he added “I've never been in love with anybody.”
This made Draco stop in his tracks and turn around to face the boy who looked so sad and was sat down on a stool with his elbows on his knees and palms crushing his sullen cheeks. “Really?” Draco asked slowly making his way towards the other boy.
"Really really” Harry said and sighed heavily.
"But what about the Cho girl, you seemed to have the hots for her?” Draco asked as he sat down on a piece of parchment on what could pass for a couch, sometime last century. “Cho?” Harry said surprised “that was just a fleeting crush” he sighed exasperated “I have never experienced you know, REAL love.”
"You know that crazy, head over heals, butterflies, want-to-be-with-you-all-the-time kind of love that lasts forever.” Harry sounded quite passionate saying this, and Draco couldn't believe he was actually sitting there in that room talking to his enemy about love. But Draco nodded non the less, sympathizing with Harry against his will.
"You know” he said after a minutes' silence “if it makes you feel any better, I've never been in love either.” When he saw the look in Harry's eyes of surprise, Draco quickly changed his mind, what was he doing, what on earth was he thinking?!
"Then again why would I make you feel any better?” Draco sneered and put up his snobby facade again. “That was a lie, obviously, because I am both beautiful and popular, whereas you are stupid and...and ugly and you are doomed to live the rest of your life all alone, which shouldn't be too long, by the way.” Draco tried to make it sound as if he was laughing at Harry, but even to his own ears the laughter came out half hearted and weak.
Harry bit his lip and let this one slide, because he knew the conversation he and Draco had been having was genuine, and that Draco had actually spoken from his heart. But to not let Draco “lose face” he pretended to be upset by this, knowing that whatever they had been talking about would never leave this room.
