Chapter 5: Let it Snow
Severus laughed at my playful attitude and genuinely thanked me for his gift. For some reason it made me unspeakably happy that he enjoyed it so much.
I wonder if he knows how much younger he looks when he actually shows emotion like that. He has to be in his forties, but I’d swear right now he was no older than thirty. It’s so good to see him looking happy.
I happened to glance over at one of the parlor windows where the drapes were slightly parted, and saw big, fluffy snowflakes drifting down.
“Severus, it’s snowing!”
I excitedly jumped out of my chair and ran over to the window, throwing the drapes wide open. Severus followed behind me at a normal pace and stood behind me, looking over my shoulder.
“It’s winter Miss Youngblood. Typically, it snows in winter.”
I ignored his smirk and habitual superior tone as I gazed out the window at the thick blanket of white that now coated every surface, glistening like a zillion shards of crystal.
“Where I’m from, Severus, a White Christmas is extremely rare.”
We fell into a comfortable silence and watched the snow fall. Eventually I became less aware of the view through the window, and more aware of the heat radiating off of Severus’ body, crossing the few inches of space between us and warming my back. It contrasted nicely with the cold radiating from the window glass in front of me, and it felt almost… intimate.
I pressed my palms against the cold glass, feeling inexplicably warm after that stray thought. My breath frosted the window and obscured my vision, but I hardly noticed now. Hard as I tried not to let my mind wander, more and more stray thoughts about Severus were running through my head. I don’t know what it was that was making me feel things I shouldn’t, maybe just the obvious romantic atmosphere. Whatever it was, it was getting to me.
I am so glad he’s not in my mind right now… I hope to Merlin he never pulls any of this up in an Occlumency session! That would be absolutely mortifying! There’s no way he would ever return any of this to someone he probably views as a child.

I wondered if Viper realized just how beautiful she looked right now. The way her features were perfectly accentuated by the light reflecting off the snow was utterly breathtaking, further complimented by the expression of delight on her face. Her eyes were sparkling so brightly, they could pass for sapphires.
A small, rare smile was allowed as I permitted myself to entertain my ‘what ifs’. Laughable as it was, I wanted nothing more than to be able to wrap my arms around this beautiful creature and call her mine. Not only was she attractive, but she had admirable intellect and wasn’t ridiculously immature or self-absorbed like the majority of her peers. No, she was far advanced ahead of the other students, through her own hard work, and I respected her for that.
Ah, if only she was 10 years older. Or I 10 years younger… the possibilities would be endless. But then, we likely would have never met.
The longer I allowed my mind to wander like this, especially with her being only inches in front of me, the harder it became to ignore the side of me that was urging me to take a chance, to hell with all my inhibitions. Of course I knew there were all sorts of complications, Dumbledore being the biggest. Although Viper was of age, the fact remained that she was a student of mine. I doubted Dumbledore would mind as long as nothing inappropriate came to his attention and as long as the school as a whole remained oblivious, but worst case scenario, was I truly willing to compromise my career and reputation as a formidable potions master, all to take a chance on this young woman?
At that moment I stopped and seriously considered the odds. I scrutinized all her past reactions toward me and her body language. She clearly regarded me with respect, and we did have common ground in regards to our pasts. Apparently she considered me at least as a friend, considering her gift. I knew it had been no small matter for her to find that book for me, and it showed just how much thought and energy she put into it.
As for her body language, she was becoming more casual around me. Her easy posture and relaxed stance when she was with me was proof of that. Now however, I was beginning to pick up on small hints her body gave away when she was near me, the most recent being her shiver as I latched her locket. My touch on her neck was accidental, but in that one moment the soft, smooth silkiness of her skin nearly drove me mad. I sharpened my gaze on her form, looking for a sign, any sign that might prompt me to begin a very slow, careful courtship. It was then that I noticed how her cheeks were looking a little flushed, and her breathing was slightly faster than normal. Her posture was vaguely tense, and her eyes were no longer focused on the snow, but instead clouded over in thought.
As if she felt my gaze on her, she glanced at me out of the corner of her eye.

I barely contained my rising anxiety when I saw Severus looking at me, his brow furrowed in concentration. I felt my face and neck flush, my mind racing to come up with some reason for it, if he were to ask why. Clearly, I wasn’t hiding anything if he was looking at me like that.
Shit shit shit…. He knows something’s off. What am I going to say? I can’t lie to him, he’d pick up on it right away. Crap, stupid face just HAD to turn red, of course…

There was my sign. I was able to read so much from her expression in the second it took her to mask it, and the way her skin blushed hotly was like a beacon. I only wished she wasn’t so anxious. I wasn’t sure if it was because she was afraid what I might think, or because I was making her uncomfortable. I decided distraction might be best in this situation, at least for the moment.
“Would you like to go outside? You’re obviously very taken by the snowfall.”
She seized the moment, grinning as she said,
“I’d love that!”
“I will get Mizzy to conjure some warm garments for you to wear. I may join you later, but I have some matters in my study that need my attention.”
I took her petite hand in mine and kissed it with a small bow, never taking my eyes from hers. Her mouth dropped open in shock, and her eyes went wide, but I saw no trace of disgust or objection. Satisfied with myself, I smirked and dropped her hand, then left the parlor for my study.

Oh MERLIN did that really just happen?!
I stood there like an idiot with my mouth hanging open as I watched him leave. Of course I couldn’t avoid noticing how well that black sweater accentuated his broad shoulders and slim waist, and damn his ass looked good in those jeans! And for the love of Merlin, I was thinking these things about my PROFESSOR!
“Argh! This is seriously not normal!”
Mizzy came to me a few moments later with thick winter clothes, and I decided to enjoy the snow first, question my sanity later.

I swirled my glass of fire whiskey as I stood at the second story window to my study, watching Viper enjoy the snow below. It was endearing, how childlike she was at that moment. Making snow angels, tossing the snow about, she looked practically giddy with happiness. My imagined task was just an excuse to give us both some time to think, to spare her having to react immediately. No doubt she was questioning me right now, and I wanted to let her sort herself out at her own pace.
I smiled, remembering how her fair skin had flushed so prettily when I kissed the back of that soft little hand. Her presence was slowly changing me, and I knew it. I could slowly feel the exterior of the cold, bitter professor melting away. I smiled, an action foreign to me, and downed the rest of my whiskey. With one last glance out the window, I met her eyes looking up at me. I smiled imperceptibly and put on my cloak, turning to leave the room.

I felt the icy snow bite at my cheeks as I worked on the bottom of my snow man. As I rolled it, making it bigger and bigger, I allowed my mind to wander to Severus. That man was a mystery. In only a few seconds our relationship had gone from black and white to a whole lot of gray area.
He’s my professor… but he said himself, we’re more like equals. I agree, but still, this was unexpected… to put it mildly. On one hand, this is wrong… but on the other, I’m of age, and he is a good man once you get past his rough exterior.
I looked up as I felt someone watching me, and my gaze met his through the window of what I assumed was his study. He held eye contact briefly before he disappeared from sight. I sighed, pushed my confusing thoughts aside, and began working on the middle section of my snowman.
Some time later, I had my snowman all put together and began looking for sticks for the arms, not paying attention to my surroundings. I was startled by a snowball splattering across my back. I whirled around to see Severus leaning against a tree, a smirk on his face. I was so taken by surprise, I just stood there open-mouthed. I had sense enough to duck for cover behind my snowman when he scooped up another handful of snow, and heard him call over to me,
“What’s the matter Miss Youngblood, never participated in a snowball fight before?”
I peeked around to see him smiling, tossing a snowball back and forth in his hands. I wasn’t sure what in Merlin’s name had come over Severus, but I definitely wanted to enjoy it while it lasted. I grinned and scooped up a snowball.
“Oh, I’ll show you a real snowball fight Severus.”
