Chapter 6 - A Surprise For The Old Bat, And Meeting The Potions Master

with an angel’s face”

“Okay already, I’ll lay off Malfoy!”
I had given Harry an ear full all the way to the tower. I gave him one last glance to ensure he got the message, then relented.
“Thanks Harry, now lead the way to Transfiguration, and step on it. I don’t want detention my first day.”
Harry laughed, and obligingly dragged me through the halls and down the staircases.
“Yeah, McGonagall’d love that!”
We made it through the door just as the bell rang.
“I’m glad you could join us in time. Find your seats quickly.”
Harry just nodded, and I grinned cheekily and mock saluted. Ignoring McGonagall’s frown, I took a seat by Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the back corner. Looking around, I noticed this class was much larger.
Good grief, there’s certainly a lot more Slytherins.
As a matter of fact, I noticed that nearly a whole quarter of the room was Slytherin. I saw Draco a few seats down in my row, surrounded by Slytherins. We exchanged quick smiles, then the lesson began.
“For your first task, a test.”
Groans were heard throughout the room. I wrinkled my nose, and Hermione sat erect, all ears.
So typical.
“Each of you will have to transform a needle into a fully developed cat.”
The needles were passed out, and I spent a few minutes watching others’ attempts. Hermione was the only one to form an adult cat, and some were unable to create even a tiny kitten. I smirked, knowing I could easily surpass them all.
Hmm...I feel like causing a bit of a ruckus...
I stood, and with a flick of my wand, I procured a half grown tiger cub, which produced an immediate reaction. The entire class turned to look, and some of the girls shrieked.
“Shadow, get rid of that thing immediately!”
I shrugged, and turned it back into a needle.
“What on earth were you thinking child?”
“What? You said it had to be a cat, you didn’t say it had to be domestic.”
McGonagall sighed, and relented.
“Very well, you won’t be disciplined this time, but I would appreciate at least a warning from now on!”
I nodded, and resumed my seat. Harry and Ron quietly congratulated me, while Hermione just sat down in a huff. I caught Draco’s glance and saw him mouth ‘brilliant!’ I nodded, and even noticed a few other Slytherins looking at me in awe. I smirked.
Yup, this is gonna be a good year.
The rest of transfiguration passed uneventfully, and I walked with Draco and some of his friends to Advanced Potions. To be perfectly honest, they all got on my nerves. I mentioned this to Draco as we chose seats in the front row. He laughed, and whispered back
“Yeah, me too. Actually, this whole damned school annoys me, except for you.”
We laughed quietly, and I observed the class. I was perturbed to realize they were all Slytherins, and were apparently very interested in what a Gryffindor was doing here.
Just then, the dungeon door slammed, and the professor entered. I recognized him as professor Snape, another one of Harry’s favorite enemies. All went silent as he address the class.
“Good day. You should all know that my expectations for all of you are set extremely high, as you have thus far proven yourselves worthy of my advanced class.”
His eyes rested on me as he continued.
“Much to my surprise, a Gryffindor has made it into my class. Shadow, correct?”
I nodded, and he continued once more.
“Very well. If you don’t mind, I would like a demonstration of your talents, as an example of an American witch.”
He waved his wand, revealing a cauldron on a table at the front of the room, as well as the directions to a potion on the board behind it.
“You will find everything you need in there,”
He pointed to a storage cabinet.
“And you may begin now.”
I rose to my feet and carefully observed the instructions.
Harry was right, Snape really is prejudiced against Gryffindors. Hmm...it’s a vanishing potion...very challenging.
I gathered the ingredients and prepared them carefully, then I followed the instructions, making sure I didn’t miss a step. I relaxed as I stirred in the final ingredient, and stood back. I held my breath as the milky white potion began to clear, then allowed myself a smile and a sigh of relief when I saw it obtain the desired crystal-clear appearance. I watched as Snape neared, and scrutinized the final product.
“Hmm...perfect color, not too thin or too thick...impressive. Now you can test it.”
He filled a vial and held it out to me. I saw the rest of the class watching eagerly as I confidently downed the potion, and then I stared at my hands and waited. Almost immediately, I faded from sight.
“Very impressive, a top mark job.”
Snape had produced a vial of the counter potion from his private stores, and I reappeared as I drank it. The class applauded, and I took a small bow before returning to my seat. I saw respect in Snape’s eyes as he spoke to the class once more.
“That is the kind of work I will expect from all of you in here. Flawless, fast-acting potions. Now I want all of you to make that same potion. Shadow, could I speak to you for a moment please?”
I made my way through the traffic of students getting their ingredients and joined Snape next to the front table.
“Yes Professor?”
“I usually don’t show favors, especially to Gryffindors, but I believe you have a talent far too advanced for this class.”
I raised a brow, surprised.
“Oh?”
“Yes, and unfortunately, this is the only advanced class for your year. However, I would be willing to give you additional tutelage once a week after classes.”
“I would be honored, Professor.”
“How many classes are you taking?”
“Six, but Herbology is my last class until after dinner.”
“Very well, how much time do you have before dinner?”
“About an hour sir.”
“Then report back here every Friday after you drop your books off in your dorm. Make sure you bring your textbook and plenty of quills and parchment.”
“Thank you sir.”
“In the meantime, you have a whole hour ahead of you. I trust it will not be wasted time?”
“No sir, if you want, I could move around the room helping others with their potions.”
“Very well.”
At the end of class, Snape seemed to be very pleased. Almost everybody had perfect potions thanks to my help and advice. I walked to lunch surrounded by Slytherins, all of them treating me like a friend. I had to admit I was surprised, since I had been given the impression that Slytherins thought Gryffindors were the scum of the earth.
Apparently I wasn’t the only one who thought so, ‘cuz everybody in the Great Hall was staring at me as if I had grown another head. I ignored them as I said goodbye to Draco and the others, and seated myself between Ron and Harry. It was then I noticed that even the teachers were staring, with the exception of Snape. I was fed up with it, and my voice echoed in the silence as I said
“Why don’t you take a picture? It’ll last longer.”
The gang of Slytherins I had walked in with all laughed, and the teachers seemed to realize they were staring and quickly looked away. A murmur started up throughout the hall, gossip already taking root. I pretended not to notice, and started eating. Gryffindor table was abuzz the loudest of all, and some were even still staring. I determinedly ignored them and turned to Harry and Ron, still staring slack-jawed.
“Will you two get a grip!”
They exchanged glances, and Ron cautiously said
“So, you’re friends with Slytherin?”
“Only with Draco. The others are extremely annoying suck ups.”
“Oh... So, do you and Malfoy talk much?”
I shrugged, and said
“depends on your definition of ‘much’.”
“What do you guys talk about?”
“Not a lot at this point, mainly about how much the other Slytherins irritate us.”
“Really? He doesn’t talk trash about Gryffindor?”
“No. He tried to, but I wouldn’t tolerate it, so he quit.”
Harry and Ron looked like they couldn’t quite believe that, but they didn’t say anything.
“Where’s Hermione?” I had just noticed she was missing.
“Probably in the library.”
“Yeah, she’s always studying.”
“Studying? On the first day of classes?”
I couldn’t figure out why anyone in their right minds would study on the first day of classes.
Jeez, talk about being a perfectionist!
