Chapter 6:
A month passed. One agonizingly long, lonely month. On January 14th Draco stood casually in the entrance hall watching the students come pouring in the doors. He observed their happy faces as they exchanged stories of their exciting Christmases with each other. He tried not to look too anxious, but he was craning his neck over the crowds in hopes of seeing her. He had imagined this moment hundreds of times over the last month. He could see how the day would play out in his mind’s eye. She would see him as she walked through the doors. It was obvious she had been anxious and looking for him too. Her face would light up when their eyes met. She would nod towards a classroom where they would meet and embrace. She would apologize for leaving him and tell him how wrong she was about her feelings for him and that she should have stayed and spent Christmas with him. She would say she wanted to be with him. She would kiss him and make love to him right there in the classroom.
Reality was quite different.
He never saw her. If she had come in with the mass of people, he had surely missed her. He never saw her mass of curls or proud saunter. His heart jumped when he saw Weasley’s red hair and Potter’s messy mop of hair. But she wasn’t with them.
The entrance hall was soon empty once again and Draco stood there still, feeling more alone than ever.

For days he didn’t see her. He wrote her letter after letter in hopes of a reply, which never came. The past month had been agonizing, but it was nothing compared to the terror of knowing nothing of her whereabouts.
At last one day he ventured out of the dungeons and made his way to the great hall to satisfy his hunger. There she was, sitting at the Gryffindor table with Potter and Weasley as if she had been there all along. He willed himself not to run to her, to envelop her in his arms and never release her. He kept his eyes down and sat next to Blaise.
“So I guess Granger’s back.” Draco said with a sneer. “It was pretty nice around here without her.”
Blaise looked at him oddly. “What are you talking about, Draco? She’s been here all this time.”
“What?”
“She’s been back for ages.”
Draco looked at his plate, hoping Blaise hadn’t seen the shock on his face. “Oh.” He said simply before scooping some potatoes onto his plate and tucking in.

He found her in the library on the day classes started. It was dusk, and few students had begun to study so early in the new term. He knew she would be there though. She was in her favorite spot, deep in the maze of shelves where few students ventured. She sat in her favorite chair surrounded by books and parchment.
He stood silently, watching her pour over her books. Her quill balanced delicately between two fingers, the tip of the feather in her teeth. He wondered what to say. He could think of no words to voice the betrayal he felt from her. Had he not time and time again written her? Had he not requested her presence?
He took a step closer, his flickering shadow looming over her desk. She looked up in surprise. Her mouth fell open at seeing him there. Clearly she didn’t know what to say to him either. She let her eyes fall back to her work, but she wasn’t reading.
“I wrote you.” He said sharply.
She looked back at him.
“Surely you didn’t think you could hide away from me forever.” He said, his voice shaking with anger. “You must have known you’d have to face me eventually. In the halls, at meals, in class.”
“I…” She began.
“How long have you been here, Hermione? You didn’t get back with everyone else.”
“I…I came back early.”
“How early?” Draco hissed.
“About a week earlier than the others who went home.” Hermione whispered looking away from him.
“You came back a week early and didn’t let me know? You knew how much I was missing you. I’ve been writing you letters all week. Why didn’t you respond, Hermione?”
“Draco,” Hermione breathed looking very determinedly at the floor, “We’re not committed.”
In one swift motion, Draco swung his arm, pushing books, papers, quills, anything in his path into a pile on the floor. Hermione jumped back, her fearful eyes shooting up to him.
“Don’t tell me that,” Draco seethed. “Don’t you dare tell me that. All the time we spent together last term. All those nights we spent together talking, holding each other, laughing. You can’t tell me you felt nothing. You can’t have felt nothing…” he trailed off, “not when I felt so much.”
Hermione frowned. “Draco…It was just…”
Draco was upon her in an instant, his hands on her arms, pushing her forcefully back against the wall. “It was not just sex!” He hissed. “How many times did you run to me crying over what Weasel had said to you? Whenever he upset you, you didn’t run to Potter or the Weasley girl, you came to me, Hermione. And did I not comfort you every time?”
“Draco, you’re hurting me.” Hermione struggled against his grip.
“Like you hurt me the day you left, Hermione? You hurt me so much more than I’m hurting you now. Why shouldn’t you feel the same pain?” He growled, pushing her harder into the wall.
“Draco, please, don’t…”
“Why didn’t you want to see me, Hermione? Just tell me.” Draco pleaded.
Hermione’s eyes searched Draco’s face. After a moment of terror, her eyes dropped to the floor. “Ron and I…” Her voice was barely a whisper, and she didn’t finish the sentence, but the look on Draco’s face told her he understood.
He ripped his hands away from her as if she were on fire and took three staggering steps back. His mind was reeling. His shock was soon replaced with rage. “What happened to you, Hermione? Have you forgotten the way he treated you? Forgotten that he’s completely incompetent of maintaining a steady relationship?”
Hermione kept her eyes cast downward. “You don’t know him like I do.” She mumbled.
“You did nothing but complain about him for the past 2 months!” Draco exasperated.
“Well over break…”
“Yeah, yeah,” Draco interrupted. “He apologized and confessed his undying love for you and told you how wrong he was and how things would be different this time around. Yeah, well I don’t give a damn.” Draco snarled turning to walk away. He stopped, turned slightly and said, “I hope you two are very happy together.” Before walking away.
Hermione slid down the wall in tears. The problem with being so intimate with Draco is that he knew exactly where to hit her to hurt her. Gathering her composure and her books, she wiped her eyes and made her way back to the common room. Ron was there when she entered. She dropped her bag on a nearby chair and went to sit next to him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and held tight to him, willing herself to feel safe, protected, like she had with him; but the feeling never came.

Draco stormed into the dormitory. He threw his bag against his trunk and quickly collapsed onto the bed face down. Blaise Zabini tentatively walked over. “Bad day?” He said.
“Go away.” Malfoy said, his voice muffled by the blankets on his bed.
“Come on, mate. Tell me what’s going on.” Blaise pushed.
Malfoy sat up so quickly that Blaise took a shocked step back. He glared at Blaise. “I said go away. I don’t want to talk about it! Now bugger off.” He snapped and quickly turned his head away, but it was too late; Blaise had already seen the tears in his eyes.
“Malfoy, are you crying?” He asked, taken aback by his friend’s display of emotions.
“Of course not!” Malfoy snapped, still not looking at Blaise. But he sniffled, and he knew he couldn’t pretend anymore. “Why does she have to be such a heartless wench?”
“Who?”
“Granger!”

One very long story later, Blaise looked appalled. After a moment of thinking it over, he spoke.
“Well mate, there’s only one thing to do.” Blaise said.
Draco looked up quizzically.
“Get her back.”
