A/N: So, I recently got flamed... not on this story but on another. I guess that means I'm a true author now. Yay! Enjoy your update people.
Harry paced through the corridors of Hogwarts restlessly. He had an addiction he was trying desperately to kick. Investigating strange goings on. As an Auror his inability to leave things alone was a boon and that same investigative tendency had helped him defeat Voldemort multiple times. But now, he didn’t want to know what was in the Forest. He just wanted to have a nice normal life for once. The problem was that now he had heard of it he kept noticing it.
He’d caught no less than five groups of children, mostly Slytherins, muttering about the monster in the woods in the last week. That was two more groups than the week before. It had been only a week and a half since he’d caught the boys leaving the forest talking about a ‘snake thing’. Every nerve in Harry’s body was itching to work on the mystery and make sure it was nothing too dangerous but he was resisting the urge with everything he had. He wasn’t a reckless kid anymore. He had his children to take care of and students to teach.
Harry passed a window and glanced out at the forest. It was sitting there looking perfectly docile and harmless. It grated at Harry almost tauntingly and the savior of the wizarding world was having a hard time ignoring it. In the back of his mind, his brain was churning on different possibilities to the identity of the creature in the woods. He shivered at the thought of it being another Basilisk. One was really quite enough to encounter for one lifetime.
So consumed with his thoughts Harry didn’t even realize when he’d reached the clock tower. He looked around at the giant gears and spinning cogs in surprise. He hadn’t meant to end up here. He had just started walking and his feet had led him here out of habit.
Harry walked over the creaking wooden floor to the clock face. He could see the entire courtyard down below. It was getting colder out now. The briskness of mornings lasted longer into the day and the chill of night set in faster in the afternoon. Harry rested his temple against the hard stone wall of the tower and let his mind wander –grateful for the distraction this place brought him.
“What are you doing here, Malfoy?” he demanded, hand already holding onto his wand in the pocket of his robes. He didn’t trust the other boy in the least. Plus he’d come up here to be alone with his thoughts and didn’t much appreciate having been followed by his greatest rival.
Malfoy sneered slightly before clearing his throat and taking great care to wipe his face of all expression. “I’d like to talk to you in private for once, Potter. Without your little fan club around.”
“Well, we’re alone now,” Harry said, eyes narrowed some in case Crabbe or Goyle jumped out from one of the many pockets of shadows around here. “What is it?”
Malfoy was silent for several minutes and seemed to be struggling with what he was trying to say. Harry quickly got fed up and threw his hands in the air. “Fine! I’m leaving if you can’t spit it out,” he announced before trying to shove past the other boy. His arm was caught by a thin but surprisingly strong hand.
“You’re so bloody impatient, Potter!” Malfoy hissed. “Fine you want me to spit it out? I will.”
Harry’s eyes widened and his hand went to his pocket as Malfoy pinned him roughly to the stone wall. His hand was caught midway there and trapped where it was. “You have no idea how fired up you make me,” Malfoy growled before utterly surprising Harry by crushing their mouths together.
Harry was stunned still for several minutes before it registered what was happening and he managed to get a hand free. Malfoy went sprawling back, his head snapping to the left under a powerful right cross. Malfoy’s cheek quickly turned red as Harry stormed out of the tower.
Harry sighed and allowed himself a moment to curse his own stupid and tactless reaction. True, he’d been shocked as hell but giving Malfoy a bruised jaw and a fat lip hadn’t been the best way to react. Even worse had been the way Draco had reacted after that incident. Getting the cold shoulder from your most hated enemy was surprisingly hurtful. Harry had tried to be happy that Draco was leaving him alone to the point of practically avoiding him. But the longer it went on the more Harry became uncomfortable. That discomfort had turned to guilt rapidly. It had taken ages for Harry to corner Malfoy again.
Harry closed his eyes and instantly recalled the way he’d rounded the corner and came face to face with the tip of Draco’s yew and dragon heartstring wand. Malfoy had demanded to know why Harry was following him. When Harry said he wanted to apologize Malfoy had outright scoffed in disbelief. “Oh? And why does The-Boy-Who-Can’t-Be-Wrong need to apologize to a poor little gay boy like me?” he’d all but spat.
It was then that Harry managed to finally render Draco Malfoy speechless for the first time. But then pinning the blonde to a wall and snogging the hell out of him was bound to do that. Remembering what he’d said before pulling away, Harry couldn’t help but smirk. ‘Now we’re even, Malfoy’ had certainly put a comical look on the blonde’s face though the punch he’d gotten to the jaw afterwards hadn’t been so fun. As usual Malfoy managed to get in the last word.
“No,” he had said with a smirk at the darker boy sprawled out across the hall. “Now we’re even Potter. Nice kiss by the way.” And then he turned on one handmade Italian heel and practically sauntered down the hall looking far too smug.
Harry chuckled and shook his head. He couldn’t believe he’d missed Draco’s sexuality before that point. After the kiss it’d seemed glaringly obvious. It was a small miracle nobody else had ever seemed to notice… or if they had they didn’t find it worth gossiping about.
Suddenly, Harry heard a blood-chilling hiss. He slowly turned as his ears heard the words that were hidden under the surface noise. Cold… so very cold… Master needs warmth…
Harry’s heart seemed to be trying to escape his ribcage as he slowly turned and started to try and pinpoint the source. Must find warmth for Master… the hissing continued as Harry slowly started to move towards it. His hand found his wand and slowly brought it out. Hearing Parseltounge for the first time in so long had made him more than a little wary. It was actually a bit frightening. Too cold… it is all too cold…
Harry carefully used his wand to fling a loose and dirty rag to the side. He sighed in relief at the small garden snake curled up under it. The snake gave a wordless hiss of protest at being exposed. Harry knelt down and put his wand away. A little garden snake wasn’t going to be a threat. “Who is your Master?” he asked, unable to stop himself from being curious.
Master is Master, came the snake’s simple reply.
Harry frowned at the less than helpful response. “Where is Master?” he asked instead, hopefully the snake would be more helpful with an even simpler question.
Master is hiding.
Harry straightened slightly. Not liking that answer at all. “Who is Master hiding from?” he asked warily.
Everyone. With that the snake slithered off still muttering about finding warmth. Harry couldn’t bring himself to catch it fast enough. Snakes and Parseltongue. Why did everything upsetting in his life have to revolve around one or the other?
