Chapter Six
Hermione bid farewell to her friends and left her compartment to meet up with Malfoy a few minutes earlier than she needed to. She really needed a couple of quiet minutes to herself to go over what had happened earlier. Her mind was so confused about what she was feeling and as to what actually happened. She ducked into an empty compartment and sat down.
‘Ok, just breath for a second Hermione, get yourself together’, she thought to herself. ‘Make a list’, lists were always good when she felt like this. Seeing everything down on paper helped her to organize her thoughts and sort things into different categories. She took out a Muggle spiral notebook and pen; she enjoyed using parchment and quills most of the time but the Muggle instruments were a lot easier to juggle with no desk.
She quickly began jotting down what happen:
1) Ron, Neville, and Seamus had just come back from changing.
2) Ron came in last and didn’t shut the door; Ginny did a very good impersonation of her mother which sent Ron scuttling back to shut the door.
3) Ron took his seat while she was still laughing over his sister’s impersonation of their mother.
4) She felt it come in while trying to calm down from Ginny’s little improv scene and she pulled her wand to cast the spell but nothing was revealed.
She stopped there. Ron had shut the door; she didn’t feel anything until after the door shut. The spell she cast would show anything invisible but physically present…how would something physically present get in after the door was shut.
It couldn’t, it would have had to been something else, something that wouldn’t be revealed from the spell she cast. She made a note to think more about that later but it would be best to write everything down now while it’s still fresh in her head.
5) The presence, it felt like a person but more…animalistic…no primitive was a better word for it. A strong presence... but not dangerous, like Snape or Dumbledore. Intelligent, not aggressive, but inquisitive, curious.
That was the impression she got when it happened, but her personal feelings, those were what scared her the most out of the entire occurrence. It was also the hardest to put down on paper. Not because she couldn’t define them, that was simple enough, but what if someone found this and read it. It would be too embarrassing. Hermione knew she had to though; she took a deep breath and slowly breathed it out.
6) The feelings, same as dreams but all at once: contentment, safety, happiness… and the feeling of being sexually aroused.
There, she had said it, or written it, but she had admitted it, even if it was in the most clinical way possible. The second whatever happened, you know, happened she was instantly, intensely, thoroughly aroused. And lastly…
7) After it was over, felt sad, empty. Wanted to run after it, catch it and never let it go.
She sat there pondering what it she could attribute the incident to. It could have been a spell. She had never heard of one that created those exact sensations but there were hundreds of joke spells out there. Spells that were harmless enough, solely designed to give the caster a brief chuckle and then dissipate within a few minutes. Or it could have been two spells improperly combined or just a single spell done improperly.
It could have been nothing more than her imagination getting the best of her.
At that moment her wand began to vibrate indicating it was time for her to meet up with Malfoy. Hermione waved her wand around the notebook and muttered under her breath, all writing disappeared for the time being. She stood and tucked her book in her bag and left to meet up with her co-Head. There would be time later for her to mull over what had happened.

‘Beep, beep, beep’
Malfoy picked his wand up and gave it a little shake to turn the alarm off. He stood to put his book away and glanced over at his friend who was still staring out of the window in contemplative silence. He peeked over at the window to see what could be keeping his friend so distracted but couldn’t find anything of interest.
“You should probably get changed, we’re almost to the school”, Draco reminded his friend.
Blaise tore his gaze from the window to look up at where Draco was standing.
“Is it already that time”, Blaise asked in wonder.
“Yeah, Granger should be along soon”, Draco replied.
Blaise stood up and grabbed his bag while studying his friend. He had spent the rest of the train ride wrestling with his recent revelation. To say he was torn was putting it mildly. Draco was a good friend, his best friend and had been since 1st year. If he was a normal boy there is no way he would let a girl get in between them. But he wasn’t normal and it was obvious she wasn’t normal, to let what might be his only chance at a compatible mate slip away because of the possibility that his friend might fancy her was asking a bit much of any friendship.
He had finally decided to wait; watch and wait and see how Draco acted around her. Draco was excellent at hiding his true feelings, a skill that was necessary when you consider the house they were in and the war that was just fought. At the time it had been hard for Blaise to know what was going on with Draco, not sure which side his friend really was on, but with his newly acquired Veela skills he was confident he would be able to sense something.
Behind him the door slipped open and he could feel her walk into the compartment. His Veela pricked up for a moment at her entrance, recognizing her as the girl he had identified earlier but quickly settled down at the confusion he felt from his human half. He could still feel the conflict going on in his human’s mind and had already decided to give him some time to make a decision about the girl.

Hermione reached the Head compartment and could see Draco stowing his books in his bag while one of the other 7th year Slytherin boys stood looking at Draco with a somewhat glazed look on his face. She didn’t know a much about the handsome boy, just that he was quiet and intelligent. She knew he was in the top ten of the class and had better grades then Phillip Channing, the boy who had taken Draco’s prefect spot when he was made Head Boy. Either Blaise had turned the job down or he had done something in the past that made him illegible for the position. Normally she would have discounted the second theory immediately as it was not likely such an offense could have been kept so quiet even she wouldn’t have heard about it. She did room with two of the biggest gossips in the school. However, he was a Slytherin; they were notorious for their sneakiness and he could have used those skills to keep the rest of the school from finding out about his transgressions.
Shaking herself out of her musings she slid open the door and stepped halfway over the threshold to be stopped dead in her tracks.
She was immediately assaulted by the same feelings she had earlier in her own compartment but as quickly as they surfaced they disappeared.
“You alright Granger?” she heard coming from the Head Boy.
She looked up to see both boys staring at her oddly. She supposed she did look a little weird, halfway in the compartment, halfway in the corridor, clenching the door frame tightly to keep the feelings at bay.
“I’m fine, just a bit of vertigo I think”, she lied. Draco seemed to believe her and went back to what he was doing.
“Ok, Well I’ll be done in a minute. I figured I could start at the front of the train and you could start at the back and we’d work our way back here. You’ll have more compartments to look in but most of the first and second years are toward the front this year and it usually takes them longer to get off so we should make it back around the same time”, Draco said.
“That sounds fine”, she responded, a little shocked that not only did he have a plan already in place but that it was a fair one.
“Alright, well we should make our way to our areas now, we’re about to pull into the station. Blaise, you better hurry up and get changed”, Draco reminded his friend. Blaise seemed to be out of sorts since they first met up at Platform 9 ¾ this morning and he made a note to ask him what was up later.
Hermione left the compartment and stood to the side as Blaise and Draco followed her out.
“Well I’m meet you back here in 15 minutes”, she said to Draco. He nodded and started for the front of the train. She turned to find Blaise blocking her way as he stared after Draco's departing back. He suddenly switched his gaze to her and gave her a little half grin. Stepping out of her way he indicated she should precede him down the aisle.
“I guess we’re heading the same way”, he said, “Hopefully there will be a changing room free.”
Hermione started down the hall, very aware of the tall boy walking half a step behind her. She had never had any interactions with him, either good or bad, so she wasn’t really sure how to respond or even if he expected her to. She quickly decided it was better to err on the side of politeness and keep their relationship civil. He was after all one of her co-Head’s friends, and apparently a better one then she had originally thought judging by the fact that he had been the only one Draco had spent the train ride with. It would be a good idea to maintain an amicable relationship with at least one of the people she may have to deal with on a much more regular basis.
“I’m sure one of them will be free. Ginny and Gary went around earlier making sure all of the younger years were at least in the process of getting ready and everyone else is usually good about not waiting until the last minute”, she said with a grin, glancing back at him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blaise hadn’t really expected her to respond to him and when she did he immediately thought she was chiding him for procrastinating. That is until he caught the grin she threw over she shoulder at him. He grinned back, his Veela half pleased she didn’t outright object to the most basic of exchanges with him. That had also been a slight worry; she was a Gryffindor, he a Slytherin, if he did try to pursue the bond with her there had been a chance she would reject it based solely on the hostility between their houses.
“I lost track of time”, he replied snidely but keeping the grin on his face so she wouldn’t think he was really annoyed.
“Well it seems as if you’re in luck”, she said as they approached the changing rooms, “there doesn’t seem to be anyone else who ‘lost track of time’. They are all free.”
“Better hurry”, she continued as the train started to slow down, “we must be in Hogsmeade.”
Blaise stopped at the changing compartments as she continued to the back of the train. She turned her head and raised her hand in a half-wave goodbye. He raised his hand slightly and jerked his head in acknowledgement before ducking into the changing room.
‘Well that wasn’t too bad’, he thought to himself as he quickly undressed. He hadn’t been prepared for her sudden entrance before and silently cursed himself for being so distracted by her unexpected appearance that he hadn’t paid attention to Draco’s reaction to her. He’d have to do better in the future if he wanted to unlock his friend’s true feelings about the girl. He could tell the train was just creeping along now so he hurriedly threw on his uniform and robe and stuffed his clothes into his bag. He had just enough time to re-adjust his tie before he heard the chime informing the students they had arrived and could disembark.
Pulling the door open he joined the rush of students heading towards the platform and carriages. He knew Draco would be busy until dinner so he went to find the rest of his housemates, maybe their chattering would keep him distracted from all the thoughts swirling around his head.
