Chapter 6. Matched
With the weight of the Marriage Law on his shoulders Snape seemed to have forgotten about the explosive argument, and the following Wednesday over breakfast he even made a comment about not allowing her near a cauldron for fear that she’d blow up the school. She giggled at his insult, making everyone at the staff table look at her as though she’d lost her marbles. Only she and Snape knew this was his crude way of saying he forgave her for the black eye.
The rest of the week seemed to creep by, as time often does when you’re expecting bad news to arrive. When Monday finally rolled around Celes was exhausted from lack of sleep and feeling on edge. Pomona tried to calm her nerves with tea and pleasant conversation, but it was like trying to soothe a prisoner who’s waiting for the noose and she soon stopped trying.
That afternoon she received her letter from the Ministry, the owl flew right through the open window into her classroom and settled on top of her desk while she was going over how to properly set a table. She let the students get into their groups and start setting their tables, a few Slytherins were chunking rolls at some Gryffindors but they stopped when they noticed the look of worry on their Professors face and instead went about the task of placing the right silverware down.
She untied the Envelope from the owls leg and handed it a piece of a roll, which it began to nibble at. The letter was sealed just as the previous had been. She sat down behind her desk, took a deep breath, and with shaking hands opened the envelope and began to read its contents.

Dear Mrs. Warren,
We are pleased to inform you that through complicated and tireless magical testing The Ministry of Magic was able to take your blood sample from the Database of Eligible Witches (DEW) and match it with a sample from the Database of Bachelor Wizards (DBW). This testing was necessary in order to match candidates whose genes should provide the optimal mixture for successful and powerful offspring.
We have therefore matched you to Severus Snape of 4962 Spinners End, Cokeworth, Great Britain.
We would implore you to read over The Marriage Law so that you have an accurate understanding of what is to be expected of yourself and your future spouse. Should you wish to ask any questions please send an owl to The Ministry of Magic Head Office of Marriage Law.
If you find that you are not happy with your match, or that you cannot comply with the expectations set forth within the Law please be aware that disciplinary action will take place including but not limited to having your wand terminated, and serving a 3 month sentence in Azkaban.
We wish you and your future spouse all the best in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Edgabald Rinley
Ministry of Magic Head Office of Marriage Law

She read over his name 3 times before she dropped the letter to the floor in horror. Her students looked up from their work and a hushed silence fell over the room, they began to think she’d had a heart attack from the look on her face. Her eyes were wide, and her mouth was held open in a look of pure terror. Severus Snape!? They matched her with Severus Snape!?
How….why…..what……what were they thinking!?
“P-professor Warren Ma’am? Are you…..are you alright?”
The timid voice of Laura Garris pierced through the silence and forced her to come out of her thoughts. She closed her mouth and tried to put on her usual cheerful look to reassure the students, but they didn’t look very convinced.
“Yes yes dear just a bit of bad news….umm class is dismissed early today. Good job on the table settings, practice for next time.”
The students seemed happy to have the rest of the afternoon off, but still shot her worried glances as they filed out of the classroom. She held her smile and uttered a few goodbyes before hurrying out of the room and down to her private quarters to lock herself in. If she knew Snape, and by now she knew him well enough, he’d be banging on her door the moment he read her name on his letter.

*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
“Open this door Warren! I know you’re in there!”
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*
“If you don’t open this door immediately I’ll blast it open!”
After another series of loud bangs on her door he took out his wand and held it out to the door, ready to blast it to splinters. Before he could begin casting the spell it creaked open a crack and he could see Celes’ eyes peeking out at him.
“If you don’t calm down I’m not letting you in…”
Her voice was timid, she sounded afraid of him. He let out a long, frustrated breath and tried to calm himself enough to gain entry so he could accuse her of tampering.
“Alright then…come in.”
She held the door open and motioned for him to take a seat by the fireplace, but he remained standing.
“I don’t know how you managed it, but I intend to find out how you tampered with the testing!”
He was talking through gritted teeth, and was obviously trying to keep his temper down to a manageable level.
She took a seat and looked at the fire for a long moment before finally responding.
“I assure you Severus, I didn’t tamper with anything. I’m not happy with this judgment in the least, but getting into another argument isn’t going to help either of us so please…..calm down.”
He watched her face for any sign that she was lying, and even considered probing her mind for a few answers, but finally decided that she was right and sat down.
“I think the best course of action is to petition the Ministry for a retest…”
“Didn’t you read the letter? They believe their tests are foolproof. You know the Ministry isn’t going to give us a retest. Think about it, if they gave us one they’d have to grant everyone the same treatment.”
“So we just…..just deal with this!?”
“Unless you fancy having your wand snapped or a nice cell in Azkaban…”
“Out of the question!”
“Then we deal with this. Have you read over the Law yet?”
“Yes…”
“I haven’t, perhaps I should before we really start talking about this. Would you like a drink while I read through it?”
“No…”
She took the parchment the man from the Ministry had given here and began reading it carefully line by line so as not to miss any details.
It reiterated the information about the extensive testing and gene matching the letter had briefly talked about as well as the disciplinary actions that were to be taken if she didn’t comply. Further down it told about the deadline they had for initiating the marriage ceremony, 1 month after receiving the match letter. Below the deadline was a bulleted list of the requirements and expectations of each spouse within the marriage, Celes gripped the parchment hard as she read through each bulleted item, she couldn’t believe the amount of control the Ministry was going to have over her!
According to the Law she and Snape would have to consummate the marriage the very night the ceremony took place, and would have to continue engaging in sexual intercourse at least once a week. ‘Sexual intercourse? What a horrible way to put it….’ She thought to herself and shuddered slightly. The Law went on to state that she had to share a home and a bed with him every night after the ceremony until a child was born, and that she was expected to become pregnant within 2 years time.
She read over the bulleted list to make sure she hadn’t missed anything and then chucked the parchment into the fire. It was satisfying watching it burn, but it still didn’t take the sting out of the fact that she was going to share the rest of her life with a man she despised to the point of hate. Every night she was going to have to settle into bed with such a cold and cruel man, and as if that weren’t bad enough she was expected to make love to him…..no it wouldn’t be love would it? Not love….not ever….
She felt a tear trickle down her cheek and wiped it away, she refused to let him see her cry.
“A month from today….”
He kept his eyes on the crackling fire and said nothing.
She sighed softly and tried her best to think of something more to say.
“I suggest we get this…..ceremony out of the way when Summer Vacation begins….I don’t want to deal with this and the students….”
He pressed his fingers to his forehead to the area between his eyes as though he were trying to suppress an oncoming headache. He looked worried again, and the lines on his face seemed to become more noticeable making him appear older.
“I agree....”
He stood up and left without another word, he was beginning to feel a headache coming on and needed some rest. He couldn’t stop thinking about Lily, and how this girl who was old enough to be his daughter was nothing like her. He touched his left cheek where she’d punched him. He supposed she did share Lily’s temper though, which wasn’t necessarily a good thing.
