A/N: Variation of the word ‘Irritation’, bother, annoy, etc. Which, Tom certainly seems to get under Ron’s skin real good. Also, this still takes place in the second book, the Chamber of Secrets © J.K. Rowling.
The morning soon came and Riddle woke up the sound of people beginning to stir in their beds and murmur sleepily about waking up or other daily morning tasks. He contemplated going back to his book but he figured if he did that then Harry would have to wake up alone or assume he disappeared after he fell asleep last night. Besides, it surely would be interesting to him to see the other Gryffindor’s or actually walk around for once.
Moving onto his back slowly and shifting an arm to rest underneath Harry's head, he crossed his legs and got into a comfy position as he waited for someone to check Potter's bed to see if he was awake yet or not. It more than likely would probably be that Ron bloke. This would be an amusing site to see how he’d take being greeted by a smirking Tom with Harry next to him instead of just a sleeping Harry alone.
Harry was completely unaware of Tom's scheming and was still having dreams of breakfast---Because no matter how sexy chocolate is, it never filled him up.
It was unusual for Ron to be up before Harry, because he slept the longest of all the boys in Gryffindor tower and took the longest to get dressed. Even Neville fell down the stairs faster than it took Ron to get up. So by the time Ron got dressed, it was just him and Harry---Who was still asleep.
'Probably talking to that ruddy book still. Bad as some girl...' He thought stumbling to the pulled curtain. "Oi, rise and shine Harry all the beauty sleep in the world won’t fi--" But when he ripped the curtains apart he did not see Harry. Not at first at least. Who he saw, Ron knew from Harry's constant talk. It was Tom Riddle, the memory from the diary. And that memory was all over his friend like a white on rice. Ron swore at the top of his lungs and jumped back.
The yell made him wake up groggily. "S'too loud..." Harry mumbled burying his face into Tom. It took him a few moments to compute what he had just done, and what the yell was. Wait, what?! Harry jerked awake, and sure enough there was Tom, and it was morning. And.... And there was Ron. "Wha--Ah! Ron it is okay! Uhm, I can explain!" Except Harry was just as surprised Tom was there as he was.
Riddle smirked to the red-haired boy who parted the curtains and he couldn't help but to laugh at how alarmed he was. He sat up more, very satisfied with startling the ginger, crossing his arms over his chest.
"I didn't exactly have a bed, so I chose to bunk with Harry here. Do you have a problem with that, Weasley?" He smirked more. Oh, he should've popped out and scared the boy long ago. In fact, he was already getting more and more ideas for popping out and scaring him or that Granger girl. He wasn't sure if he should really wander about too much around the school... Who knew if anyone was still around that might recognize him or take it negatively... He didn't know too much about how exactly his planned future played out, did he?
What should have been a dream come true only made Harry feel nervous; he would have liked to have some warning about this. As Ron opened his mouth to retort he cut across him, "This is Tom, Ron! Uhm... I g-guess you'll be seeing each other more often now..." He was trying desperately to make this seem like no big deal. But why did Tom have to be so aggressive towards Ron? Well maybe he was just grumpy in the mornings.
Ron stared at them both still confused as hell "What--Harry you can’t be---" Again Harry cut across him, which pissed Ron off more. "I am! I guess all my hard work in the library paid off huh?" But that was a lie to bluff Ron.
Ron gritted his teeth, where did this... Book get off talking to him like that?! Polite my left cheek! Still... Arguing right now wouldn’t get him anywhere apparently so he bit back his words. "I guess so..." He managed trying not to glare. That guy was so... Ugh.
“So, Tom you know Ron now! U-Uh is he how you pictured him?" Harry said trying to break the ice and buy time.
Tom watched the scene with a bit of amusement before he shifted on the bed to bring his legs up and over the edge, sitting there now as he looked to the red-head more now. "Yes, we will definitely be seeing a bit more of each other. It's a pleasure to meet you finally." He nearly mocked, though he remained as 'delightful' as possible. He looked back over to Harry, smiling to him, and then looked back to Ron. "Some, not all though. Either way, it's nice to put a face to your name finally." He stood up, trying to consider whether he should venture on further and go downstairs or not.
"I don't think, after sleeping next to you all night that I have enough power to wander about more. I'll have to come back later." He put, turning to talk to Harry as if Ron no longer existed there anymore. He wasn't about to say that he just didn't want to be spotted at the moment until he knew that it would be more safe for him to wander about, making up the excuse about his power. And he wasn't sure if Potter would appreciate him being affectionate to him in front of his best friend, especially if the ginger didn't know. So he moved to give him a simple hug and a goodbye before he could say much more, disappearing into the hug and back into the book nearby. There, he could get a bit of actual rest now, at least.
That smug confidence made Ron want to shout again, and he only grumbled at the ‘pleasure to meet you’ part. He had been around Fred and George long enough to know when he was being mocked. ‘And what the ruddy hell was with the way he kept looking at Harry? It's like they’re going out or something!' Ron thought trying not to glower at Tom. It was a difficult battle.
Harry on the other hand was completely fooled by the way Tom treated his friend and beamed back when he was smiled at. He wondered for a moment that Tom was going to walk out of the dormitory, so his resting was a relief.
Ron seethed at being ignored; again there was the sense that he was NOT wanted there by the older boy. No matter how polite he was, that feeling was almost palpable. The hug just sent off more warning bells. He never hugged Harry, hell, Ron’s brothers didn’t hug either! What was going on here?!
Harry was still oblivious to Ron's anger and embraced his lover eagerly, only slightly embarrassed about it. He didn’t know what Ron kept glaring for that day, or why he didn’t seem so enthused about the whole thing. ‘He’s probably just still in shock’ he thought knowingly; Harry was at least. When Ron told Hermione at breakfast... She almost blew a fuse.
They got out of charms class early that day thanks to Seamus setting the classroom on fire, which left the three with a bit of free time on their hands. All day he was quite sure he caught Ron and Hermione muttering to each other but couldn’t prove it. So the break in one of the deserted classrooms was nice for him, it was alone without whispering.
'I guess they want me to do more school work or something..." Harry sighed but just at that moment Hermione came in after him.
"Harry I really need to talk to you about something---" She said looking anxious.
"Look I already finished my essay so--"
"Why do you always assume I’m here about homework? Anyways, it’s about Hagrid. You still haven’t gone to see him about... About you know what!" She noticed the diary Harry carried religiously and looked like she had sucked on a lemon.
The diary was definitely something that the Granger girl needn’t worry about, seeing as how Tom had materialized himself and started to become less transparent, appearing behind her. He had a little charming smirk on his face as he leaned in, just slightly, and tried to startle her.
"See Hagrid about what? My, I haven't seen Hagrid in some time. So they even allowed him to come back onto school grounds and even offered him a position? How fascinating." He put, even though he wasn't truthfully fascinated at all. He had wanted a position of teaching here at Hogwarts and he had asked to try and get one before school ended, yet, to no avail. How they could let that man have a position was beyond him and kind of infuriated him a little because it meant Hagrid was better, even with the track record Riddle had placed on him. Yet he kept his little charming smirk on all the while, pretending to just be curious.
The sound of the voice behind her made Hermione jump and turn around, she backed away a few steps warily. Friend of Harry's or not she did not trust a book that did things on its own. And from what Ron had told her, he wasn’t exactly friendly...
Hermione started to think of a way to avoid telling what they were doing when Harry answered for her. "She wants me to go ask Hagrid about what happened back when the Chamber opened the first time." He answered helpfully from one of the desks, pleased that now Tom and Hermione could meet.
Hermione made a nervous "Hmmm" sort of noise when Harry answered, this person would probably not be pleased she was questioning his testimony on this subject. "I-I just want to make sure we know everything, Harry!" She replied over her shoulder.
Tom smiled to Hermione jumping away and looking alarmed, not flinching at all, before standing to his full height and crossing his arms. He looked back over to the Gryffindor seeker, smiling to him for actually caring to let on exactly what this group was planning on.
His eyes then moved back onto the mudblood, the smile still on his face. "Ah, yes, from back when I showed Harry that memory? Getting his take on the whole thing would help, especially if he's behind it again and these students are in peril." He put, before stepping just slightly closer to Hermione, reaching out a hand to shake hers.
"Pleasure, by the way. I'm Tom Riddle, obviously. You must be Hermione Granger. Again, it's good to put a face to a name finally." Of course, he detested having to shake hands with her, knowing she was mudblood. But, regardless, he needed to put up the act that he was a charming gentleman, even if he did have a bit of a sharp tongue. He was quite good at acting, though, he could tell she would still be as wary of him as that Weasley was from earlier.
“A-ah yes you too..." Hermione managed caught off guard by the friendly gesture, shaking back; he had antagonized her over Hagrid which she knew would happen. Still, she stood her ground “Hagrid might be the one doing this--But even the police question suspects!' She answered stubbornly.
“You’ve been putting it off Harry; we should have gone to see him first thing." She called to her friend, not wanting to take her eyes off of the older boy like he was a snake.
Harry hopped off the desk totally oblivious to the aura of wary from Hermione. He really didn’t want to take sides on this, he didn’t want to think Hagrid was capable of such things but he had to believe Tom too. "W-Well Hagrid hasn’t ever hurt us before... So we need to ask... Just in case."
Riddle merely seemed intrigued and amused in all of this, looking from one to the other before giving off another little charming smile to Harry. "Well, you should do definitely do that and get down to the bottom of things. Student lives are at peril. It was quite uneasy back when it happened to me but the thought of it happening again... Ah, well." He put, looking off before walking towards Potter. "I should leave you to it then. Good luck~" He smiled again to the Gryffindor seeker in front of him, proceeding to disappear and head back into the book that Potter carried constantly around.
Though she wanted to bitch fit at Harry, Hermione held her tongue; the look on his face was enough to tell her that he would just keep that head in the clouds look no matter what. She was right; because all he did was gush about how happy he was they were all getting along and knowing each other. Sure he was happy, but Hermione did not think that this was very good for him it made Harry slow and ignorant to what he was supposed to be doing. More than usual.
That evening she kept at both he and Ron to go see Hagrid, "Oi, if you want us to go investigating so ruddy much why don’t you do it?!" Ron exclaimed as she fussed at them.
"Because I’m going to do some research in the library, I told you I think I might have an idea about where to find some more information about the chamber of secrets!" She kept at them until she noticed Harry was still clutching the dairy and the cloak. By Merlin she wasn’t going to let that book sway Harry's decision on Hagrid too, "Harry you can’t take that too!" She said sternly.
"Huh, why? I always take Tom with me." He held the book closer.
She thought about it for a moment, then "If you get caught, Filch will definitely confiscate it--Best leave it here tonight." She refused to call it, a "he".
Harry seemed to think on it then halfheartedly, tucking it into his bed later on, and pulled the curtains. It was a little creepy. Especially after he seemed to whisper to it before stepping away. "He'll be fine now come on! We have to get going." Hermione rushed them out the portrait hole following behind them to see if her idea about the monster in the chamber was correct.
Tom kept hearing the Granger complain more and more to Harry that he should go investigate Hagrid. Honestly, it was wearing too much on him and he was honestly contemplating on just being rid of her already. He had an idea forming and when she ordered Potter to leave him behind, go and see Hagrid, and for Hermione to go to the library by herself... Then he thought of the perfect idea. It wasn't too bright, allowing the emerald-eyed boy to leave him behind and she'd most regret it.
After the small goodbye and parting from Harry, he solidified himself outside of the book, reached under the blankets for the diary, and put it in the inside pocket of his own school uniform. He turned, leaving; only seeing a couple of Gryffindors on the way out. They stared at him, unsure of what to make of him, especially seeing how he just left from the Gryffindor's boy dorm towers and was obviously a Slytherin. They whispered but one sharp look from his dark eyes caused them to freeze up and cease their whispers until he left, pushing open the Fat Lady's portrait and leaving.
The Fat Lady seemed a bit alarmed at seeing him, not sure if she recognized him or not, and kept quiet instead of suddenly yelling at him that he shouldn't have been in the Gryffindor common room, etc. Tom made his way down the staircase, scanning the rooms and any faces he happened to catch looking his way. Definitely more than a few portraits and paintings suddenly quieted upon seeing him, only daring to jump from their frames when his eyes weren't on them or when he was out of sight. Word was spreading around fast in the paintings along the castle now of the fact that Tom Marvolo Riddle was wandering again, apparently his young school self once more.
He made his way towards the girl's bathroom on one of the floors, a specific room... Any students he passed just stared at him curiously, not having seeing him before. It was obvious none of the students really knew who he was because of course they were not from his time. That and he was sure he would've dropped the name 'Tom Riddle', if he knew himself that is, long after his leaving of Hogwarts. The name he intended for himself in the future, Lord Voldemort, would obviously be much more of a household name, he was sure of it.
He nevertheless kept up his usual charms and smiles to the students, quite a few girl students being suddenly caught in that charming smile on the way past him and blushing or looking back at him. No one seemed to bother him, aside from a teacher seeing him.
Professor Flitwick had been walking around and had seen Tom Riddle just strolling the halls as if he was any other student... He tried greeting him as if he was oblivious, though it was obvious he was nervous, and he quickly moved to exit past the taller wizard and walk off around a corner. When he rounded the corner, he immediately ran towards any teacher he could get ahold of first to tell them of what he saw. This was not good! If anyone knew that the younger He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was in Hogwarts! Oh, he was definitely panicking.
Tom ignored it though; even a little amused at Flitwick, and made his way into the bathroom finally. He did not return until a bit of time later, leaving the bathroom, and headed towards the library.
Once he entered he strode past tables, chairs, and shelves, towards Hermione. He wanted to surprise her, peering in between some books and smirking at her as he moved some aside. "Oh, if you wanted to find something, you should've brought me. Who knows books better than a book?" He put, sarcastically. He wanted to bug her though and bid a bit of time...
Hermione jerked involuntarily at the voice, and guessed who it was even when she really did not want it to be him. She had thought that maybe Tom needed Harry to be nearby for him to appear and perhaps he had earlier but not now. He was not transparent now, or at least not enough to tell in the dim torch light. She did not miss his sarcasm and was right to assume that he both heard what she had said and was rightly upset about it. She kept forgetting that he could listen in now.
Hermione tried to answer nonchalantly, but she had never been good at lying "O-Oh, hello Tom...it's good to see you out and about... I wouldn’t think of bothering you about something like this." She motioned to the books at her table; the library was practically empty thanks to the late hour. "Besides, you’re Harry's friend it wouldn’t be right to just drag you along with me." The truth was she wanted to keep both Harry and herself far away from the prying BOOK before her.
Tom smiled to the girl before he pulled away and began to make his way around the bookcase. "Yes, it's quite nice not being stuck in that book anymore. And it's not like I have anything else to do, I sit there being so /lonely/ most of the time. Harry treats me so well. And I honestly wouldn't mind, you know, I would've been /delighted/ to help." He turned the end of the bookcase, coming up the isle with Hermione in it and staring her down, a smile still wide over his face.
"So, what are you researching anyways? I could help. You know, I used to be a bookworm like you and read just about everything the library had to offer back then... A lot of the books they held then are no longer stored here, because their contents offended the Ministry in some way or form... If it's something more potent like that that you're looking for, I may know it..."
Friendly as he seemed to be, Hermione could not stop feeling the fluttering feeling of danger rising from her stomach. Something was wrong here, but for the moment resisted the urge to back away. She wasn’t going to run away from someone who wasn’t really even there... For now.
"I’m looking up creatures that might be able to paralyze students." Hermione did not say that she had also been looking for a snake, because only Harry could hear it, and that she had found said creature already in her books.
His words bothered her, what kind of books was Tom talking about that would be confiscated; dark arts were the only thing to fit that category. Unless Tom was trying to be an Auror, which she doubted, there was nothing good to come of such books. "They’ve moved the more dangerous books to the restricted section; you need a teacher’s permission to get them." She made sure not to say "evil" rather than dangerous. She had been over to that section before and was glad it was on its own. Maybe that information would get him off track and she could get back to where more people were... Hermione held tightly to the mirror in her pocket, and the notes inside as well.
Riddle moved to lean against one of the bookshelves, crossing his arms and giving a little smirk now to her. "Oh, I'm not talking about those books. I had read all the books back then, restricted area and not. As time passes, libraries realize exactly what is in some books and how dangerous they are. I'm sure the library had plenty of dangerous books back then that aren't even in the restricted area today. And oh, I should have guessed you were looking up on that. I forgot you three were trying to figure out the whole predicament over the Chamber of Secrets. Well..." He leaned forward, looking as if he were in thought.
"A creature that paralyzes students... Just like how it did back in my time, right? It has to be something that can get around easily and quietly... It's hard to hear it sneaking up behind you, isn't it?" His smirk was only stretching more across his lips, hearing the faint hisses and movement, but just faintly. He knew exactly what it was, having summoned it to greet the lovely Granger so that she could see for herself.
"You know... You may be a very brilliant girl, but you're also very stupid. Leaving me in Harry's care would've been the better move, hence him keeping an eye on me. It gets bothersome sometimes, when he never lets go of me, and I can't wander on my own like now. Which, I thank you for, honestly. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to rid of you!" He looked over to her, eyes closed, smiling just so happily like a child presented their favorite candy.
"This makes things go much more smoothly. If anything, you might be smarter after all for realizing just how dangerous I am! No need to tell me what you sense about me, for its correct and I'm quite charmed you're able to see me for how powerful or threatening I am, even if I am a mere projection out of a book right now." He moved so that she would not be able to run past him, having nowhere to turn but behind her, and yet he kept his eyes closed. "Do me a favor, and turn around, won't you? I'm sure what you're looking for is right behind you. Quite nice when the things you need to know come right to you, yes?"
The hissing and slithering against the ground grew louder and louder. Absolutely no one was in the library but the both of them, chairs and tables being knocked aside in the Basilisk’s path as it crept up behind Hermione, its wide yellow piercing eyes focused on her and just waiting for her to chance a glance...
Hermione froze at the words rather than she distracting him, it had been the other way around--! She did not move and she had to move. Her face flushed with anger at herself and him, even as her legs shook under her. The Heir of Slytherin before her, and the giant snake behind her, both would certainly cause death if charged at. But Harry didn’t know that his newest "friend" was a monster worse than the creature that came closer and closer to her stiff back, and there was nothing she could do to warn him in person.
Still the notes, Tom didn’t know about them even if he had guessed what she had been up to. Hermione, in a last act of rebellion against the piece of soul clutched the paper hard in her hand and lifted the mirror to see the monster that lived in the Chamber of Secrets. If she could somehow survive what was to follow, she would only be paralyzed. Harry and Ron would find out, they had to. She saw the terrible yellow orb in the reflection, and Hermione knew no more.
The Slytherin smirked wide in satisfaction at hearing that sickening 'thump' on the ground from Hermione's body falling and hitting the floor. He still dared not to open his eyes, even though he knew he was only a projection, it would still harm him. Using his parseltongue, he commanded the Basilisk away, listening for the movements of the large creature before continuing. Once it was safe he opened his eyes, peering down at the girl. It was a shame she didn't look at the beast full on, seeing the mirror in her hand. He shrugged it off though, choosing to leave her alone for others to find as he exited the library, the diary safe in his jacket pocket by his heart.
