(fifth year)
There wasn’t a reason to speak. Ginny flipped to the next page in the text while praying it would explain the previous page so she would have a chance to understand the last fifty she had read. Why the hell had she picked this topic she wasn’t sure. She was already flunking D.A.D.A., she might as well toss it up as a waste of time. Of all the creatures she had to choose from. It was her own fault. The Professor had put thirty names on the board. The order in which you got to select a topic was on how well you did on the previous quiz. Being one of the lowest grades, she had been third to last to select what her essay would be on. Luna had been first, so the blonde had her pick of things. Figures, Luna had chosen werewolves while she had gotten stuck with Tunneling Trolls. What else was there to say besides that the disgusting creatures liked to make their homes in dirt?
The soothing heat from the fire made her want to lay her head down and sleep. It would be so easy to get in sleep whilst pretending to study. She wasn’t sure if she was drained from Quidditch practice or today’s Charms class. Probably a combination of both. It took a lot of energy to silently curse someone to hell and back. Two hours of wishing Potter to a gruesome dismemberment had made her sleepy. She had spent the class imagining ways to unman him. It was entirely his fault that things were so stressed between her friends. Things were wonderful between Luna and she, it was Severus that had her worried. Lily was refusing to speak to him.
If only she had been there that day. Instead, her and Luna had been coming from Divination when the Marauders had cornered their house mate outside. Things had gotten ugly quickly, causing Severus to lash out at Lily when she had tried to come to his defense. The fight that had taken place afterwards had been horrible. The Gryffindor more or less told Severus she wanted nothing more to do with him. The pain on Sev’s face had brought tears to Luna’s eyes. It had made Ginny want to use an unforgivable on that bastard for causing the situation. Those Marauders didn’t have any type of remorse for what they did. To make matters worse Severus didn’t want them getting involved either.
Ginny hated the fact that she liked the foul git almost as much as she despised him. Just last week he had played a hilarious joke on Professor Wickler. She had laughed before she could prevent the mirth from bursting forth. Seeing the man running out of the room while holding the back of his arse was too funny for words. The smell that had trailed behind had a few students gagging. If only Potter wasn’t such an arse towards her friends and herself. She knew that it didn’t matter if he stopped being so hateful. She was a Black and a Slytherin. Her parents wouldn’t care for their dating even if he was a pureblood. They already considered the Potters to be blood traitors. Not that she’d let that stop her. She hadn’t let it affect her choice of friends in the last four years. Of course, Lily had been the only Muggleborn she had befriended. Now, it looked like her parents were going to get their wish. Since the little disagreement Lily hadn’t bothered to speak to any of them. No doubt her fellow Gryffindors were saying all Slytherin were alike. Fuck them, fuck Potter.
She didn’t need them to like her. Oh, she wished he would though. Of all the males in this school she had become attracted to, it was one of the few that despised her very existence. It was his fault for being so cute and adorable towards others. He was so damn sexy and aloof. The only other male that could compete was her cousin, Sirius. That Lupin was also cute but too smart for her. Maybe she needed a boyfriend if she was going to fawn over Potter secretly. It was pointless, not only did he not like her, he had a thing for Lily. The two weren’t a couple because Lily claimed that she didn’t like him. "What is that noise?"
"Severus," Luna was brought out of her own musing hearing the swearing and the stomping coming from outside the door. In his anger it sounded like he was ordering the door to open instead of simply saying the password. Things must not have gone that well. She would have gotten up to let him in but an unfortunate first year was already headed to the door to depart. The poor girl screeched in fear as a very pissed off Severus Snape stormed into the Common Room. He didn’t speak to anyone before storming towards the dorms. "Ouch, I guess things didn’t go well with Lily."
"Bitch! She needs to get over herself. Someone needs to inform her that friends forgive each other. She should know that he didn’t mean it. It was just his manly pride lashing out." Ginny didn’t like seeing him so upset. Lily should know by now how much Severus worshiped her. He didn’t mean it. You hurt the ones you love. "Maybe we should talk to her about it."
"He asked that we stay out of it. This is something he has to handle on his own, it was his mistake. It doesn’t matter how sorry he is or the reason why, he was the one to cause the rift so he must heal it. As much as we hate seeing it, this isn’t our fight." Luna prayed that Lily would forgive him soon. Severus was becoming more snide and angry as the days went by. "How is the essay coming along?"
"Don’t ask, I can’t find anything usual in this bloody book. How is yours coming along?" Ginny didn’t want to bring up the fact that she was too busy letting her mind wander towards a brunette with glasses. There was just something about him that stirred her emotions. Granted most of the time the emotion was anger.
Luna shrugged at the question. She had more than enough facts from the books. To her it was all boring and repetitive. She didn’t want to hand in an essay that was nothing more than rewording of what other students could find in the library. She wanted something more to add. Perhaps some inside information to spice up her essay. She could question one about certain facts. Between the three tomes she’d taken from the library all three disagreed on some facts. Such as mates, behavior, and temperaments. Would it hurt to ask the one she knew to answer her questions? Would he be alright with being interviewed? Just because he would grace her with a soft smile every so often didn’t mean he’d be up to her prying into his business. She also didn’t want him to feel obligated to participate because she had kept his secret. "I’ll be done soon. You should try Beetleburg’s Tome on Dirt Dwellers. It has some interesting theories you could use."
"Or I could tell that troll of a professor to suck on the pointy end of my wand. We have better things to do than to write a forty foot essay on stupid creatures. Fuck it, I’ll just write really big and claim I was trying to be neat." Ginny leaned back to stretch her arms behind her head. "Do you have a date for the White Ball? I’m thinking about asking Severus just to have someone to stand around with. Who are you going to ask?"
"I still think it’s stupid that because of the name only the girls are allowed to do the inviting. Leave it to the Headmaster to have a charm on the door to allow in couples that meet the criteria. I’m still nervous about asking someone out." Luna wasn’t sure who to ask to attend with her. None of the boys in her own house interested her. There was no way she’d ask Black, so who could she ask? Someone that would be pleasant company. He couldn’t be demanding either, she wasn’t snogging on the first date. He had to be cute too. She had standards and she didn’t want to ask someone she wouldn’t enjoy looking at while dancing. Oh, her date had to be light on his feet. She’d made the mistake of attending the Halloween Ball with a guy in Hufflepuff that had thought to waltz meant to tread on her toes. "Would you get upset if I said I was thinking about inviting a Gryffindor?"
"Hell no, I’d say you have bigger brass than me. As long as it isn’t Longbottom. He’s not too bad on the eyes but he’s clumsier than a pregnant sow. So, who is it?" Ginny knew she didn’t have the nerve to ask one of them. There were only three she’d be seen with and she wasn’t asking any of them. She’d see if their best friend would attend. It would get her a date and would help get him out of his depression.
"I’m not telling. You’ll see soon enough." Luna smiled before going back to her reading. Maybe this dance wouldn’t be so terrible. If she could get a date then the only down side would be having to wear a white gown. A few pink attachments would liven her gown up. With Ginny doing her hair, something good may come out of it. It was a month away, how hard would it be to get him alone in order to ask two favors of him?
~
Remus’ teeth clenched painfully at the next suggestion. He most certainly did not want to take their friend out this weekend. He didn’t care for their company and to add another simpering, empty-headed female to their little group would cause him to rip out his own throat. His wolf was already getting agitated with their smell. It wasn’t the scent of Sirius’ spunk that was getting to him but that of the blonde Ravenclaw. The short hair made his latest girl look like a squirrel. The only reason the two were together was because she was easy to get in an empty room. He didn’t want to date someone just to shag. Not that he didn’t appreciate the offer, he was a man.
He still had urges like the rest of them. There was someone that he liked. He didn’t care to share his feelings with the others. They wouldn’t appreciate or understand his reasons. Was it wrong for him to want someone that he’d be able to have an intelligent conversation with? No one would be able to fault him on the girl’s looks. She was beautiful and so petite, it made him want to hold her close, muttering endearments while shagging the fuck out of her. Instead of spending time with the one he fancied, he was sitting in the Quidditch stands so they could watch Slytherin practice. It did give him a reason to casually take in the sights.
As if sensing he was thinking about her, the blonde flew towards them. Everyone stopped speaking when she got close enough to do so. What was she doing here? The most they had exchanged were sly smiles whenever he thought his friends weren’t looking. He didn’t count being around while both groups threw insults as conversing with her. He didn’t fail to notice how Sirius took an exceptional dislike to her interference. While James focused most of his anger out on Snape, Sirius seemed to dislike the two females more.
"What the hell do you want, Malfoy?" Sirius scowled as the blonde ignored his presence. What reason would she have to intrude? His dear cousin was still trying to improve her skills as a Chaser. They needed the help since Gryffindor was going to win the next game. He took in the Slytherin colors that went well with the pale hair and skin. It was wrong that someone so beautiful was a Malfoy.
"Nothing from you, Black." Luna inwardly cringed at the evil glare, Sirius’ wasn’t much better. She didn’t fail to notice the way his girl, she didn’t know her name, was giving a look of complete hatred in her direction. As far as she knew they had never exchanged words. Sometimes house rivalry went deep. The person she flew down to speak with had a small smile on his face. "Lupin, I was wondering if I could speak to you for a few minutes. It shouldn’t take long?"
"Sure, I’ll meet you on the other side of the pitch in a few minutes." Remus heard the gasp of outrage. The blonde nodded before flying into the direction he indicated. What was this about? Did she want something from him? A part of him grew worried when he couldn’t think of one reason why she would want to speak to him. He could think of one and that worried him. Had she finally decided that his secret should be told? What would he do if that was the case? She had been smiling and hadn’t appeared upset or angry with him. The nasty sneer had been directed to his friends.
"Are you going?" Peter muttered seeing the blonde land on the ground. What did she want with Moony? Why was it always Moony? Not that he was jealous. As beautiful as she was, he didn’t want that one. The one he fantasized about was still riding in the air. The long red hair stirred behind her, whipping against her back as she did a fast dive to avoid a bludger.
"No, he’s not." Sirius answered for him. Once more she was seeking Moony out. He wasn’t stupid nor blind. He noticed how the slut was constantly sending sly smiles towards their friend. He wouldn’t allow Moony to be tempted by someone that would only use him. "You should have told her to sod off."
"Why? She asked politely. I saw no reason to be rude, Padfoot." Remus wasn’t going to be rude to her. She could have rode over wand blazing hexes and he wouldn’t cast back. She was already waiting for him to come down. He wouldn’t leave her waiting. It didn’t matter that his actions would probably anger his friends. They didn’t ask his permission before dating their choices. He saw no reason as to why he should ask if it were alright to taken an interest in a beautiful girl. "It’s probably something for Charms class. I’ll be back shortly."
"Let him go, Pads."
Remus was thankful for the voice of reason, James. If anyone would keep the peace it was Prongs. He was the only one that could keep the other two in line. He wondered if anyone would notice the spring in his steps as he took the steps downward. He couldn’t deny being anxious and a little excited. He was positive his friends weren’t the only ones that were paying attention to where he was going. Several of the Slytherin players were already stopping on their brooms to see where he was going.
Luna shifted her feet patiently, she was trying to be patient. On the surface she was clam but inside her stomach was in knots. She wasn’t sure what she was more nervous about; asking his help on her essay or asking him to the ball. Getting a passing grade was more important than getting a date. What if he said no to both? What if he laughed in her face? Then went back to his friends and laughed further at her expense? She didn’t think he’d be the type but what if he had a date? He had to have a date already. Someone like him probably had more than fifty offers already. Why would he want to go with her? Was Gin watching? Dammit, the entire team was.
Remus saw the nervous gesture as she glanced up towards her team. Was she worried about talking to him? No doubt the others would be just as thrilled as his own friends at the transgression. For whatever reason she had sought him out. He might as well discover why. "It seems we are to have an audience. Would you prefer to speak here or go somewhere with more privacy?"
"Would you mind walking a distance? I’d prefer if no one heard what we are saying." She didn’t care if they heard her ask him to the ball. She didn’t want anyone else hearing about his situation. That issue needed to be addressed first. A large, scarred hand indicated in the direction towards the forest. She’d come this far, might as well ask him. It had taken a week of waiting for him to be alone. The one time she had found him alone in the library some Ravenclaw had beaten her to him. Seeing as his company didn’t appear to be departing before graduation, she had left. It had taken a lot of self urging to fly over and get his attention.
Remus took the time to cast quick sideway glances at his company. The long hair was piled high with the use of several gold combs. The curls were out of place due to the wind pulling at the length. He could only imagine what she’d look like with all that glorious hair spread out on a pillow while being pleasured. Walking side by side it gave him a precise indication of how much smaller she was. He was already six feet, compared to her five. She’d fit perfectly in his lap. Would she speak first or would he have to ask what she wanted?
"Thank you, for coming along. I’m sure your friends weren’t too happy about it." Luna knew they weren’t thrilled with her speaking to him. What made her think he’d agree to accompany her? He wouldn’t do something to anger his friends and house mates. "I won’t keep you long. I wanted to ask you for help with my Defense essay. I did pick Werewolves as my subject. I got plenty of information from books but I was hoping to ask you a few questions. A lot of things are still unclear from what I read. Maybe you could clarify them for me. I’ll even make an oath that I won’t reveal where I got my extra information from. It’s just a few questions."
"Okay," did she always talk so fast while nervous? Remus smiled at the light blush that crept into her cheeks. He hadn’t thought about that. She had indeed picked the subject. He hadn’t thought to wonder why at the time. She was wanting to clear up some of the speculation centering around his curse. He had read everything written on the creature. He could dictate a few things that were mistakes. Some being the tales of their kind having pre-destined mates. They didn’t have what could be called mates. They chose their partners like any other species. Naturally when they did find one they wanted they could be possessive but weren’t most males? "I don’t mind answering a few questions whenever you have time. Of course, I’d appreciate it being done in a secure place."
"Thank you. I don’t want you to feel that you have to help me. It is appreciated." That had been easy. Would he agree to her other request? Could she ask? Did he have to smile like that? Did he realize how innocent it was? "There is another reason I wanted to speak to you. I was wondering if you have agreed to go with anyone to the White Ball?"
The White Ball? It was three weeks away. He hadn’t agreed to attend with someone yet. He knew that they were trying to get him to agree when he was asked to go with the others. The female in question had yet to speak to him directly, mostly going through his friend’s girls to see if he’d tag along. Seeing as he hadn’t said yes when asked, he still didn’t have a date. "No, I haven’t accepted an invitation yet. Why do you ask?"
Good. Luna wondered why he hadn’t accepted any invitations. Was he waiting on someone special to ask? Did he like someone? It could be another negative mark against her invitation. "You don’t have to feel obligated to say yes but I wondering if you’d attend the White Ball with me. It’s understandable if you don’t want to. I know your friends probably want you to go along with them. I mean it’s okay if you want to go with someone else."
She was asking him? She wanted to go with him to the ball? Every male from Third year and up that could get asked to attend would be there. She was choosing him out of all the others? Why? Was there another reason? Did he care? He couldn’t think of a reason she’d invite him other than wanting to attend with him. At least his sentimental side didn’t want his mind to come up with one. "If you are serious in your invitation then I accept. I will be your date for the Winter Ball."
Really? Luna wanted to thank him for accepting. It would have been embarrassing to be turned down. He had just committed himself to be her date. Without thinking of how he’d react she reached out to grab his hand. It was warm and smooth, with just the tips of her fingers she could feel the strength in the grip. She squeezed the fingers, "Thank you. I’ll meet you there ten minutes before seven. See you in class."
