"Mione?" Ron's gruff voice pierced through the silence of the house and Hermione trembled slightly. She felt Lucius squeeze her hand, reminding her he would be with her through this.
"I hate it when he calls me that", Hermione muttered under her breath and heard Lucius chuckle at her obvious frustration. She heard Ron's footsteps get louder as he got closer to the bedroom and she held her breath. This would not be pleasant but it felt inarguably right- to both her and Lucius.
She knew it was the bond that made their nerves calm down slightly, as images of a new future together, without the secrets that had haunted them both for the last 19 years, emerged in their heads. This would be the first hurdle they had to overcome for this vision to come true.
"Mione?" Ron repeated, his voice rising with his anger as he took the final steps into the bedroom.
Hermione could feel Lucius' smirk as they both observed the look on Ron's face as he saw them holding hands. "Hello Ron", Hermione said, looking calm despite her inner turmoil.
She had never been the type of person who could break bad news to anyone. "I…I guess this is a surprise to you…", she trailed off as Ron, who had been gaping at them in astonishment, turned his eyes to her, seeking an explanation.
It reminded her of their Hogwarts days when him and Harry would look to her during Potions, expecting her to help them understand the seemingly senseless instructions. Except this time, she had no rational explanation. "We…that is…me and Lucius have…"
Ron's accusing voice, which still held a trace of shock and disbelief, cut in, "Since when have you been so chummy with the death eater?" Although the rational part of Hermione reminded her that she was the one in the wrong here, she couldn't help tensing as she tried to reign in the part of her that wanted to attack him for even daring to insult her lover.
Before she could lose her inner battle and do something regrettable, Lucius cut in, keeping his voice calm, more for her benefit than Ron's. "Me and Hermione have been friends for a long time. Even while you were at Hogwarts". Despite his noble intentions, Lucius could not help the smugness that crept into his voice as he mentioned their long standing 'friendship'.
Ron's face had turned red and he kept his gaze on Hermione when he said, "And when were you planning on telling me that you were friends with a death eater? Does Harry know?" Hermione's downturned eyes gave him the answer.
"So while we were supposed to be helping him defeat You Know Who, you were hanging out with one of the ones that helped him rise to power in the first place? Makes me wonder Hermione, whether we could have taken him down sooner if you hadn't revealed inside information to the enemy!"
Hermione gasped with outrage at this accusation but reigned back her temper as she felt Lucius tense in response. The last thing she needed was a fight between these two. She had no doubt who would win and the Weasley clan would not be happy with the result!
Instead, she took a deep breath and looked Ron straight in the eyes, anger making her voice sharp, "I assure you Ronald, I never 'hung out' with Lucius during our school days and I most certainly never passed on any information to them. It would do you well to remember that Lucius was never accused of aiding Voldemort."
She took another breath before continuing, "And I don't see why I need to share everything with you and Harry either!" She tried to remind herself that she was about to confess to having an affair but she couldn't be repentant when anger at Ron's insults were boiling in her blood.
Ron looked slightly abashed but took another stab, "And what about when we were captured during the war and taken to his manor?" he asked, glaring at Lucius, "He didn't show any friendliness when you were being tortured. You only had me and Harry!" Hermione felt Lucius look at her and she turned to him.
"I had no choice", he whispered, quietly enough for only her to hear, "I didn't have enough power to cross Bella, not when she was wielding the weapon so close to your throat and…" he turned away but she gave his hand a squeeze. She understood. He had played a strategic game and something deep inside her knew that if she had come close to actually dying, he would have found a way to save her.
She turned back to Ron, who hadn't heard their conversation but had seen the hand gestures. "The past will remain in the past", Hermione answered confidently, feeling the magic between her and Lucius stirring again.
She subconsciously moved closer to him, a movement that didn't go unnoticed by Ron. "Mione?" he asked, looking at her suddenly, like a child being denied a cookie.
"She's with me Weasley. An obvious improvement on her last choice", Lucius stated arrogantly before Hermione could think of what to say. Ron's face had turned ghostly white as Lucius' arm crept around her waist and pulled her closer to the support of his firm body.
Her whole body was tingling with the strength of the magic around them and she knew the time had arrived. "I'm sorry Ron. Me and Lucius have a bond…I can't stay with you anymore. I need him" as her words cut clearly across the short distance separating them, the room began to glow.
All three of them watched as two silver strands wrapped around Hermione, one connecting her to Lucius and the other one to Ron. "No", Ron's strangled whisper was barely noticed by Hermione as she watched the strand connecting her to Ron sever itself and fade away, while the one between her and Lucius took on a golden glow before disappearing.
She felt Lucius tremble next to her and turned to him, confused by the significance of what had just happened. "Your marriage vows have been dissolved", Lucius murmured to her, pulling her into the embrace of his arms as she felt her legs buckle, "And our bond, stronger than that of marriage, has been strengthened to its full potential". Hermione didn't question his knowledge but she was curious as to how he knew.
"Where did you learn that from?" she asked him with a frown, "I never came across it in my research". A part of her noticed that Ron had slumped to the floor after their connection had been severed but she was unable to give him further thought when Lucius bend down and gave her a quick, warm kiss.
"I've seen it before…between Bellatrix and…"he didn't finish the sentence but he didn't have to.
Hermione stared at him in fright as she tentatively asked, "The Dark Lord?"
Lucius nodded and smoothed her hair back as she buried her face against his chest. "That doesn't mean we're like them", he whispered to her, his own heartbeat picking up at Hermione's distress, "We've been together all this time Hermione and we've never even thought about world domination!" He tried to make light of the matter but he was as worried as she.
He had always been interested in the Dark Arts, as had most of his family. He had hoped Hermione would have a stabilising effect on him since she had never supported the Dark Arts, but he had realised as their bond had been secured, that she would do anything for him. The unsettling thought of how much power they could have with her by his side came to him, unbidden and he quickly pushed that thought to the farthest corner of his mind as he felt Hermione calming down in his arms.
"You're right", she pulled back to gaze up at him, with a wavering smile, "We aren't like them. We won't be". He nodded back and let his long blond hair cover both of them like a curtain as he bend down and gave her a lingering kiss. He could never get enough of her.
Hermione finally pulled away from the kiss, hearing Ron's gasp. She looked at him with a slight air of contempt.
Even a giant (who are not known for their intelligence) could have figured out the truth by now! "Mione? You're not…" Ron gulped like a fish out of water as he saw Lucius wrap her in his embrace.
"As I said earlier Weasley", Lucius sneered down at the forlorn figure on the floor, "She's with me. Did you really think you ever had her?" He ended this question with a raised eyebrow and, although Hermione knew she should feel guilty and sad and not allow Lucius to be so condemning to her husband of 19 years, she couldn't help the small laugh of delight that escaped her as she realised she could now be with Lucius every minute of the day.
"No more sneaking around", she explained as both her ex-husband and lover looked at her.
Lucius smirked back in response while Ron made a sound that sounded like he was gagging. "You…no! Hermione….you didn't….cheat…on me?" the astonishment was plain in his voice.
"I'm not as innocent or good as you think Ronald", Hermione answered back, sneering a little herself. She felt Lucius chuckle and leaned back into his strong, masculine body. "Can we go now?" she asked him, ignoring Ron's shocked look.
"As you wish My Lady", Lucius answered, his hand resting in the hollow between her shoulder and her neck. "Just let me pack your things". He let her go for a moment to take out his elegant wand. He made a few complicated patterns with it in the air and murmured, "Locus et sarcina". Hermione watched with a smile as all her possessions shrunk themselves before neatly fitting into one of her old suitcases.
Lucius grabbed it with one hand and took her arm in the other before passing her his wand. At her confused look he smirked and said, "I trust you".
These three words meant more to her than she would ever confess and she couldn't stop the smirk on her face as she apparated them away; the only person other than Voldemort to ever use Lucius Malfoy's powerful and dangerous wand.
