The afternoon was enjoyable and it quickly sped to dinner time. The trio had gone through the trunks that Severus had brought back finding different items for Harry to treasure. There had been a few items that had been set aside to be discussed with the lawyer, but Harry refused to let them bother him right then; the photos, papers, trinkets, and jewelry were what he had wanted to concentrate on. Harry had never known these items had been up there, but he was happier than he could say. Actually the more he thought about it today was the best day he'd had in his life except for maybe when he'd found out he was a wizard. Once again he had hope in his heart that things could be better then what he'd grown up with. When the dinner hour arrived Severus and Draco joined Harry in his room for dinner. Harry was able to eat most of what he was served, which he knew was a big improvement. He noticed that Severus noted how much he'd eaten and seemed pleased with the amount. After dinner Harry insisted on walking down to the study. His legs were a bit shaky a few times and by the time he sat down he felt like he'd run ten miles, still he had done it on his own.
"We have about twenty minutes until Mr. Wells arrives. Why don't you try the wand out now?" Draco suggested. He went over and picked up some napkins from the tea that was set out for the meeting. He put them on the table in front of Harry. "I know they aren't feathers, but they should work for trying things out."
Harry chuckled but nod. "All right, but if anything explodes it's your fault," he told him. He lifted the wand and used the swish and flick motion, "Wingardium Leviosa," he said in a nice clear voice. He felt the magic work through him as the napkin began floating in the air. He guided it over to Draco and then dropped it on his head. "Oops sorry Draco," he told him a mischievous grin on his face. "Accio napkin," He said and then caught the napkin as it flew to his hand. "I hate to say this, but I think this wand works better for me then my old one."
"It is possible that the old one was not the best fit for you Harry. It may have been the best Olivander could do at the time, but obviously there was a better one out there for you," Severus told him. "Tomorrow or the next day you can test out more advanced spells and see how you do with it especially after we free you of that block."
"Sounds like a good plan. You don't want to overdo tonight," Draco pointed out to Harry. He rose and started to walk towards the door. "Mr. Wells should be arriving any moment. I will go meet him and bringing him in here." He then left to head to the main room where the floo and apparation point was.
Severus looked over at Harry who was running a finger up and down the wood of the wand and had a pensive look on his face. "What is wrong Harry? Is it the papers we found?"
"No, those make me angry," Harry said looking up at Severus. Someone had obviously packed up the trunks from the wreckage and he had a sneaking suspicion who that was. In doing so the wizard had caused others to suffer, not just him, and he was determined to make him pay. "I suppose I'm just worried that I'll wake up and all this will have been a dream," he explained. "It's been such a wonderful day for me actually, all things considered. By the night's end I'll have set in motion to have Dumbledore investigated for what he's done, I'll have started to plan my own future, something I was never allowed to do, and I feel like I have true friends now to share my life." He blushed a bit wondering what Severus would think of him calling the man friend.
Severus understood where Harry was coming from in regards to feeling happy and how compared to his past it was so much better. He had known that feeling at one time or another; sadly for him they had not lasted long. He was a bit surprised and taken back when Harry called him a friend. He'd thought it would be a long time before Harry would consider him a trusted ally but a friend? That he had never hoped for. He didn't have friends any more. He taught, worked on his potions, and spied on the Dark Lord; that was his life. He'd shunned any chance of finding friends. He had too much at risk to bother with attempting to garner people to his side. It was a nice feeling to have Harry included him in his circle. "I am honored you think of me this way Harry. I would like for us to be friends."
"I would too," Harry told him with a smile. "I have to admit I've seen a different side of you today. I also want to thank you for telling me those stories about my mother. I never knew you two were friends or that you had known my aunt. You are the first one to tell me about them when they were teenagers. Most won't tell me much about them at all. Sirius would now and then, but sometimes I think he confused me with my father. Remus, again, sometimes talks about them, but I don't see him very often. Everyone else when I ask they evade the questions. It always made me wonder what they were hiding. After I snooped into your pensieve I think I know why. They wanted me to think my father was a good man when he wasn't; at least not back then anyway. I did apologize for that incident earlier didn't I?" he asked wanting to make sure he had.
"Yes you did Harry and I accepted it. I did not say it at the time, but I too am sorry for how I behaved during your lessons. I would not normally have taught Occlumency in that fashion, however I was ordered to follow a certain plan by Dumbledore. He stated that it was the only way for you to learn in time to do any good. I objected, but unfortunately he does have some leverage upon me. If he turned against me I would soon find myself in Azkaban for being a Death Eater."
"Well, now you have Harry Potter on your side," Harry told him. "That has to mean something right? Maybe I can use all that fame they keep heaping on me for something good instead of it just being a pain in the arse."
"What's a pain in the arse?" Draco asked as he led an elderly looking wizard with a short beard and grey hair into the room.
"Nothing important," Harry stated. He looked at the new man thinking he had nice friendly eyes, but ones that could turn cold when needed.
"Right. Mr. Wells you know my godfather and this is Harry Potter," Draco said motioning for him to sit down in the one chair while Draco went to pour them all tea. "He's the young man I wrote to you about that needs your assistance."
"It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Potter," Wells stated to the young man across from him. "And how may I be of assistance to you?"
"Please call me Harry. I um...well I'm not sure where to start," Harry said suddenly feeling overwhelmed by all that he needed to have done.
"Start with what you would like to see happen first, Harry, and please call me Don," Wells told him in a kind voice trying to put him at ease. While he waited he took out a pad of paper and a self inking quill so that he could write everything down he needed to.
Harry watched Draco set out the tea and then join him on the couch. He took a deep breath and let it out. "First, I want to see about being emancipated so I no longer have to live with my guardians and have to answer to no one."
"I have made copies of all these," Severus said handing a set of papers and a memory ball to Wells. "These document the situation with Harry's current guardians and how they are not suitable."
Wells glanced at the papers, his eyes widening at several things. "I see," He said. He could only imagine what was in the memory ball, but figured it showed the damage that had been done to Harry before he was healed. He set the papers and ball in his briefcase to be able to go over them further before approaching the Wizengamont. "Now you are also the last Potter are you not?" He saw Harry nod and made note of that. "Which means you should be financially able to support yourself and you have a responsibility as Lord Potter to take on. I should be able to get this all done by tomorrow night depending on how busy the Wizengamont is."
"Really? That would be great," Harry stated. "Then the second part is I would like the goblins to go over my vaults and estates. I want to know who had access to it, who made what withdrawals, and if there is anything else out of order. Since I did not have my key until I was eleven I have no idea what might have been done before then and I have never received any documentation from Gringotts about my accounts." He saw Wells writing this all done and nodding as he did so.
"There might be a fee for Gringotts to do this, but it should be minor," Wells explained to Harry. "I take it there is more?"
Harry looked at Severus and then at Draco for a moment before taking out three of the papers they had found. "Severus found, at my aunt's, several trunks that someone had packed up of what remained after Voldemort killed my parents and destroyed the house. I never knew about these trunks until today. In one of them we found an envelope addressed to me. Inside we found this," He said handing over the papers to Wells. "It's my parents' will. In it Dumbledore was named executor of it and he signed as one of the witnesses so he knew about it. It also states quite clearly that I was to never be placed with my aunt. In fact, my father states that I would be better off with Voldemort than them. There is a list in there as to whom my parents wanted to be my guardians. They also left a bequest of fifty million galleons to be given to Remus Lupin. I know he never received this."
"That would certainly cause Dumbledore some problems now won't it?" Wells rhetorically asked a bit shocked that a man like Dumbledore would ignore a parents request like he had. "He is going to have to answer for this. Somehow, though, I don't think this is all there is; there is more?"
"Yes," Harry said taking out the last piece of paper. It was a letter from his father to him that had been attached to the will. "This was attached to the will. It's a letter from my father; now most of the letter is just personal information for me, however there is the one paragraph where my father explains why they chose to use Peter Pettigrew as their secret keeper instead of Sirius Black. It states that Dumbledore suggested it; thus he knew all along that Sirius was innocent. He left him to rot in Azkaban. As Chief Wizard of the Wizengamont he could order a new trial at any time. He was going to let him be kissed when Sirius was caught at the school, after his escape, even though I knew that Pettigrew was alive as did several others."
Wells was taking many notes as Harry spoke. He felt sick that someone as powerful as Dumbledore had obviously abused his powers; to what end he didn't know, but it was something that had to be stopped. "I'm assuming you want charges brought against him?"
"Yes. He also knew about what the Dursleys were doing to me and yet insisted I return there every year. I told the school nurse about what was happening and she told me that she reported it to Dumbledore as well and was told he would take care of it," Harry told Wells. "I suspect other things, but do not have proof as yet."
"In that case may I suggest I start gathering evidence and putting it together?" Wells suggested. "That we don't go after him right away until we have it all and can blind side him?"
Harry had been thinking of something similar so he nodded, "I like that idea. I want to make sure we get him for everything; however I want to stipulate any evidence you find that you copy it to Severus and me. I don't want to take a chance on something going missing. I will also do the same if we find any such evidence."
"Understandable," Wells told him. Considering who they were talking about Wells could more than understand the fear of evidence just disappearing.
"Is it possible for you to have the finances of another investigated?" Harry asked.
"Depending on the person it is very possible. Who did you have in mind?" Wells asked. True checking out another's personal information might skirt the letter of the law, but it would not break it in the wizarding world.
"One would be my aunt and uncle, Petunia and Vernon Dursley. The other is the Weasley family. The parents are Molly and Arthur," Harry stated. "My aunt and uncle are muggles. I'm not sure if that will make a difference or not but, thought I should let you know."
Draco was confused by wanting the Weasley's checked out and he looked at Harry with the confusion evident on his face. "What are you thinking is wrong with the Weasley's finances?" He asked softly.
"I'll explain later, but let's just say two plus two does not equal four," Harry told him with a grim smile.
Draco nodded although his curiosity grew from that statement. He turned to Wells and added something he knew Harry wanted but probably didn't know how to do. "He also needs a gag order on the Daily Prophet and all of the other papers and magazines; that they are not to print anything about him unless he approves it first. Also he needs a libel suit brought against the Daily Prophet for past articles that damaged his reputation. In particular I'm talking about the last two years from when he started the Tri-Wizarding competition until the Dark Lord was confirmed back by the Ministry. There were also articles in our second year published about him being a parselmouth and that he might have opened the Chamber of Secrets."
"Some leverage for getting that done you might want to tell them that you know that Rita Skeeter is an unregistered animagus; she's a beetle. That is how she manages to get all her tidbits of information no one else seems able to get," Harry told him.
Wells quill scratched furiously across the paper as he took down notes on everything said. "Really? Now that is interesting and I'm sure they won't like the possibility of that blackening their name. Anything else?"
Everyone was quiet in the room as they thought about what had been said so far and if there was anything else remaining that needed to be discussed that night. Reaching for his tea Harry decided something. "Yes, if for some reason you cannot get me emancipated I would like you to get my guardian changed."
"I don't think it will be a problem getting the emancipation, but you are smart to have a backup plan. Who was it you wanted to make as your guardian?" Wells asked.
"Professor Severus Snape," Harry told him. He saw Severus' eyes widen in surprise at this announcement. "Is that all right with you Severus?" He suddenly wondered if perhaps he'd overstepped the boundaries of their burgeoning friendship.
"I am honored that you would trust me in that position," Severus told him attempting to keep his cool and stoical mask in place. He was more than honored he was touched. After all he'd said and done to the boy he offered this to him? He was amazed at Harry's ability to forgive and move past what had happened.
Wells nodded and added the final information. He looked over his notes to make sure he had everything and that he had no more questions at this time. He knew he would be up all night working on this, but he thought it worth it. Harry deserved it after everything he'd been through and he felt he owed Harry something. It didn't matter to him what the papers were saying about a chosen one, no what he remembered was how he had felt when he'd heard Voldemort was stopped and was gone fifteen years ago. His daughter had been an auror who had died during a battle with Death Eaters and to know that their leader was gone had given him such a sense of peace at the time. It had soothed the loss of his daughter and to know that by doing this Harry had ended up living in a hell; it just wasn't something he was going to allow to continue. "I will start on this right away. I should have the gag order and libel suit in place by noon tomorrow. I'll have the emancipation done hopefully by tomorrow night, but if not by Thursday morning. I will write to Gringotts immediately to order the audit of your account with them. I cannot say when that will be done, but once they inform me I shall pass that on to you. I will also specify to them that you want all correspondence to be sent to you directly and to no one else. I'll get investigators started on the rest and I will inform you of what they discover."
"Thank you Mr. Wells; I do appreciate all you are doing," Harry stated feeling a bit at a loss for words. He was overwhelmed at having all this done. When he'd complained about the press before he'd been told nothing could be done and now to find out that soon they wouldn't be able to do anything to him, let alone the emancipation; it was all a heady feeling.
"My pleasure Harry," Wells stated. He turned to Draco. "Was there anything else?"
"No I think that covers it for tonight, however I would like you to be present Friday at the reading of Sirius Black's will," Draco told him. "It's scheduled for one o'clock in the afternoon. Perhaps you can join us for lunch beforehand. I was thinking The Witches’ Brew at eleven thirty?"
"I would be delighted to join you," Wells stated as he wrote that down before putting his papers away. "Now I should get going so that I can get started on this. Harry it was a pleasure to meet you," he told him with a smile. "Draco, Severus a pleasure as always." He then walked out of the room heading for the floo area.
Draco got up and refilled all their tea cups. "Harry, want to tell me about the Weasleys and why it is you are having their finances checked?" He sat down beside him once more and took a sip of his tea curious to find out what would be said.
Harry nodded and took a sip of tea before he started. "Well as you know first year Ron and I became friends. I found out as I'm sure you are already aware that everything he had was hand-me-downs, even his wand wasn't new." He saw both Draco and Severus nod. "Yet that winter Ron couldn't go home for Christmas holidays because his parents were going to Romania to visit Charlie. Now in second year I actually went with them to buy school supplies. I saw Mrs. Weasley empty out their vault before going shopping and I do mean empty it of every knut. Everything they got was second hand; books, robes, and well you get the idea. I'm sure you remember that Ron's wand was broken that year." He heard Severus groan and chuckled as the man rolled his eyes. "Exactly, they didn't buy him a new one until next year, however that Christmas they took a trip to Egypt to visit Bill, once again Ron had to stay at the castle and they did all this even though Mr. Weasley was under investigation at work due to the car incident. Where is the money coming from for these trips and why don't they use it to help their children?"
"Now that you mention it that activity does appear odd, especially since I know several professors wrote to Weasley's parents telling them that the wand needed replacing," Severus stated. He sipped his tea while thinking about the Weasley's and their apparent behavior. "I had noticed that they went to the World Cup in your fourth year and yet Weasley was in those dreadful robes for the Yule Ball. I had wondered about that briefly at the time, but I had other concerns and put it out of my head. I have to say that I think you are right that they do need to be investigated especially with what you told me earlier about the conversation you overheard between Weasley and Granger."
"There's other activity that is suspicious although not with their finances," Harry stated. He saw Draco look at him with a raised eye brow. "What? I told you I had four weeks to think about things and I started going over everything that has happened since I entered the magical world. Tell me Draco how do you get to the platform every year for the train to school?"
Draco looked at him as if he was a bit barmy, but he shrugged and answered. "By floo of course. All magical families use the floo or a portkey. It's only half-bloods and muggle born that use other means. Why?" he asked wondering where he was going with this line of questions.
"Exactly! And yet the Weasley's drove a car," Harry stated and saw the look of surprise on both of their faces. He turned to Severus, "Has the platform number changed at all in recent years?"
"Of course not. It's been the same since before I started at Hogwarts," Severus said as he pondered why the Weasleys would have driven to the station. He couldn't figure out where Harry was going with the platform number.
"Then why would Mrs. Weasley have to ask her children what the platform number is?" Harry asked of them. "You would think after sending five children there already, along with her own years at the school, she'd know the platform number. I will also add that she said this in a very loud voice along with stating that the place was packed full of muggles. I mean it assisted me since I didn't know how to get onto the platform, but it does seem a bit odd don't you think?"
"She was trying to get someone's attention; yours I presume," Draco stated. "But why would they want to do that? Let alone how would they know you were there and might need assistance? You ended up sitting with the Weasel on the train ride did you not?"
"Yes, but only after I was on board the train. What I mean is we went our separate ways and then Ron joined me afterwards," Harry explained. "He asked if he could join me since the rest of the compartments were full."
"Well that's total shite," Draco said. "The train wasn't that full, he could have found a spot in other places."
"Language Draco," Severus stated to his godson. "Harry do you think he lied about it being full?"
"Considering no one else joined us, yes I think he did. I think he knew exactly who I was when he went into the compartment even though he pretended not to. If the train was so full why was it no one else showed up to join us; I mean the twins popped in for a few and then Hermione and Neville did while looking for Neville's toad, but no one asked to sit with us. Then Draco do you remember when you showed up at the compartment? You stated it was all over the train that Harry Potter was in that compartment," he said and saw Draco nod confirming what Harry remembered. "If that's the case then I have two questions. One, how did everyone know I was in there and the second with how everyone wanted to meet me why was it only you and your thugs that showed up?"
Draco chuckled, "That is a good way to describe Crabbe and Goyle." Draco thought about the questions and tried to remember who had told him that Harry Potter was on the train. He couldn't remember the student's name, but he thought it was one who ended up in Hufflepuff or maybe Ravenclaw. "I can't remember who told me you were there. No one else showed up to try and meet you? With how much talk I was sure others had stopped by; odd that they didn't."
"I agree. When I did my school shopping with Hagrid he told me about the school houses and it was pretty obvious he didn't like Slytherins. Then on the train Ron went on and on about how there wasn't a dark wizard who wasn't a Slytherin and then you showed up," Harry stated. "Your behavior at the time reminded me a great deal like Dudley's. By then that was the second time we'd talked. The first time in Madam Malkin's where you insulted Hagrid, who was the first friend I had ever had. The second time you insulted Ron who was also becoming my friend. With all that after you went to Slytherin I knew I didn't want to be in that house. When the Sorting Hat was put on my head it wanted to place me there, but I kept telling it no, not Slytherin. It wasn't happy, but it put me in Gryffindor instead."
"Wait, you could have been one of my snakes?" Severus asked stunned by that news. He had to wonder if Harry had been in his house would he have treated him any differently.
"Yes, Severus; I was supposed to be, however I was young and I let the prejudices of those I liked influence me," Harry told him. "Now I wish I would have let the hat decide for me."
"Mmm, it's not too late to change houses Harry," Severus told him. "You would have to do it on the first day of school during the feast, but you can demand a re-sorting. It's rare, but it is possible to have it done. You would have to do it prior to starting your first classes of sixth year; once the classes of sixth year start it is too late to change."
"I think I will do that," Harry stated. "Although I'm wondering if I should go back at all." He saw Draco and Severus give him a look of confusion. "It's just having to deal with Dumbledore, Ron and Hermione; it feels like an uphill battle. Not to mention I have to wonder what will happen to me this year there."
"Harry you need your education," Severus told him. "If you are in a new house you won't have to deal with those two and we will make sure Dumbledore is gone. Hogwarts is the safest place for you to be while we assist you in learning things to be able to fight the Dark Lord."
"The safest place? What are you on about?" Harry asked incredulously.
"Harry, it is common knowledge that Hogwarts is the safest place around. It has the strongest wards and protections next to maybe Gringotts," Draco stated.
"Really? Then why in first year was a teacher there with Voldemort sharing his body with him?" Harry asked. "Not to mention the troll being let inside. Then second year we had a basilisk roaming everywhere and a diary that was slowly possessing Ginny Weasley. Third year we had Sirius entering the school and all three years we had an animagus running around the school by the name of Peter Pettigrew. Then in fourth year we had a polyjuiced Death Eater, pretending to be one of Dumbledore's best friends, teaching the Unforgivables to students and let's not forget Rita Skeeter running about in animagus form spying on everyone. Then there is last year where we had Umbridge using a blood quill on students. Now does that sound like a safe place to you?"
"You have made several valid points. The wards should have let the headmaster know about those problems," Severus stated. Hearing it put the way that Harry had he was forced to admit that something was wrong at Hogwarts. "The animagus of Peter Pettigrew especially should have been caught far sooner than he was. Although I have to admit the press on that, if it got out, would have been disastrous for the school. The fact that a male animagus was running around unhindered throughout the school would make some wonder what all he had seen and done." He sighed and reached up to rub the bridge of his nose. "Be that as it may you do need your education Harry. There are other schools, of course, however, if you transfer you will not be on hand to watch as Dumbledore is brought down nor have the satisfaction of thumbing your nose at Weasley and Granger."
"Point," Harry said with a nod. "I will go there. I just had to vent I suppose. I needed to get out all these frustrations I've been feeling, especially this past year," Harry explained. He fought back a yawn not wanting to admit he was tired.
"Understandable Harry," Draco told him. "Hearing all that you said I think you should say exactly what you feel; holding it in is not good for you. That being said I want to be around when you tell off the Weasel." He had noticed the yawn that Harry fought and he glanced over at Severus.
"I think it is time you went to bed Harry. Tomorrow shall be a busy day," Severus told him as he stood up. "I shall walk up with you and get you another pain potion so that you sleep without any residual pain. Would you like a dreamless sleep potion as well?"
Harry didn't want to go to bed; mostly because he was afraid of having nightmares. Hearing the offer of the dreamless sleep he felt relief wash over him. "Yes I would, thank you." He stood up and noticed Draco walked with them up the stairs. He felt cared for by the two beside him. It was a nice feeling after what he'd gone through with the Dursleys and the betrayal he'd felt from Dubmledore, Ron and Hermione. Reaching his room he smiled at them. "Good night Draco."
"I shall go get those potions," Severus told them before walking down the hall to his rooms.
"If you need anything my rooms are right here, just across from yours," Draco told him. "I will look through my clothes and see what might fit until we can go shopping for your own. Try and get some sleep Harry and know you aren't alone now."
"Thanks Draco," Harry told him with a smile that reached his eyes making them sparkle. "I'll see you in the morning. I'm used to getting up very early. Thought I should warn you," he told him. He saw Severus coming back with the potions and knew soon he'd be out for the night.
"Oh great. Well when you wake up let me know. I may or may not get up with you," Draco joked. "Good night." He turned and went into his rooms even as Severus came back with the potions. "Good night Uncle Sev."
"Good night Draco," Severus stated. "Here are the potions. Now I'm assuming you have to take care of a few necessities before going to sleep. Take the pain potion immediately and then the dreamless sleep once you are in bed."
Harry nodded knowing that if he took the dreamless sleep while standing he'd never make it into bed and just fall asleep where he was. "Thank you Severus," He told him. He took the pain potion and handed the bottle back. With the other potion in hand he smiled at Severus and then leaned forward to give him a hug. "Thank you for being here."
Severus was surprised by the hug. He wasn't a touchy-feely sort of person but he had to admit, at least to himself, that the hug felt nice. He hugged Harry back and then moved backwards a bit. "If you need anything I am just down the hall or you may send a house-elf to get me."
Harry nodded, but hoped he wouldn't have to disturb Severus' or Draco's sleep. He knew neither of them had gotten much sleep the night before and needed it tonight. He really didn't want to be a burden to them or make them wish he wasn't part of their lives. "See you in the morning," He added before going into his room and shutting the door behind him.
