Chapter 6 - News
Ashleigh was once again in the Gryffindor common room sitting in her now favorite high backed chair by the blazing fire, Hogwarts: A History open on her lap. Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny sat around her working on their homework at the urgent warnings of Hermione. Every once in a while Ashleigh would look up when one of them would ask a question, usually directed at Hermione that contained strange words she had never heard of. Currently, she was wondering what essence of murtlap was when a small, yet freakish creature appeared in front of her. At the pop of the house elf’s apparition, everyone looked up at the elf and then at Ashleigh.
“A note for you miss.” The house elf said, bowing low at the waist as he handed Ashleigh the envelope.
“Um, thanks.”
At her words, the elf disappeared with a pop.
“What…”
“That was a house elf. You’ll get used to them. They come in quite handy. I expect that note is from Dumbledore.” Hermione informed her.
Ashleigh looked down at the note, tearing through the wax seal, the note was indeed from Dumbledore.
Miss Grey,
Please come to my office as soon as possible. Professor Snape has finished the Magical Identity potion at an exceedingly fast rate and I would like to share the outcome with you. Please have Miss Granger escort you to my office as it will be past curfew when we finish.
Kindest Regards,
Albus Dumbledore
When she finished reading, she looked up. Everyone was staring at her waiting for the verdict. With a small smile she said “I don’t know yet.
“He asked me to come to his office so he could tell me the result of the potion. He asked you to come with me Hermione.” Ashleigh said, looking at the other girl.
“Oh! Yes of course. It’ll be curfew by the time you return.” Hermione said already walking to the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Enter.”
Ashleigh entered the Headmasters office, eager to learn the outcome of the Magical Identity potion. She was skeptical that the result would be that she was magical but she supposed that anything could happen considering how she had come to be here in the first place. Maybe she would make an okay teacher; she had after all tutored an endless number of her peers in different levels of mathematics. She should do fine if it came to it; and she had grown up as a Muggle so if anyone was to teach Muggle Studies it should be her. Taking a seat in the offered high backed chair, she waited for the Headmaster to begin.
“How are you this evening, Miss Grey?”
“I’m good, you?”
“Very well, thank you. May I ask where Miss Granger is?” He asked with a curious glance.
“She’s waiting outside for me. I wanted to hear what you have to say before anyone else knows anything else about me.”
The Headmaster nodded in understanding.
“Well, let us get to it then. There is no need to, as they say, beat around the bush. Miss Grey, I am pleased to inform you that you are a witch.” Dumbledore said with the most serious of expressions.
Ashleigh just sat back in her chair, a blank look on her face. Although there was no emotion evident on her face, a war was waging inside her head. She kept asking herself, ‘How can this be? Why didn’t I know this before, when everyone else learns about it at the age of eleven? Why me? Why?’
After a few minutes of conversing with herself, Ashleigh finally recognized the presence of the Headmaster once again.
“Are you sure?”
“Positive. You may count on it my dear. Severus does not make mistakes when it comes to a potion, which is why he was given the title of Master.” He said with a smile and an amused twinkle of his eyes.
“So…What happens now?” She asked tentively.
“Now? I should think some good old fashioned shopping should do you some good. The school will provide you funds for the necessary items you will need as well as extra clothing and such considering your unique predicament. You will be sorted tomorrow morning at breakfast and then will proceed to Hogsmeade with the other students. You and Miss Granger will be allowed to apparate to Diagon Alley so that you may visit Olivander's and Madam Malkin’s, among other necessary stores. Miss Granger will be able to help you with what you need.”
“What about classes?”
“Oh yes, a very important subject indeed! The professors have agreed to give you private lessons during their free time. You however, will be the one to choose which classes you want to take since you are of age. The classes you may choose from are Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, History of Magic, Care of Magical Creatures, Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Divination, Transfiguration, Charms, Astronomy, Herbology and Muggle Studies which I don’t think you need.” He said with a grin.
“That’s a lot. I want to study all of them, well except for the Muggle Studies class, is it possible to do independent study?”
“I suppose. Given your talent of photographic memory, History of Magic should come quite easy to you.”
“How did you know?” She asked with a pensive look in her eyes.
“There are not many goings on in this castle that I do not know about.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. Is there anything else I need to know?”
“There is one other thing I would like to discuss, your living arrangements. For tonight only, you will reside in Gryffindor Tower unless you are sorted into Gryffindor House. However, I am offering you your own rooms given that you will have an enormous amount of work to accomplish over the next year. Do you find this idea agreeable?”
“Yes, I mean, everyone I have met so far is really nice but I wasn’t looking forward to spending the night with Lavender and Parvati. Don’t get me wrong, they’re nice and everything, but they’re a little too, how should I say…over excited…about trivial things for my liking. With my own rooms, could I still visit the common room of my house?”
“Of course you may, it will still be your house. Do you have any more questions?”
At the shake of her head, Dumbledore dismissed her.
“I believe that is it for now.” He pulled out a note and handed it to her. She looked at it, recognizing the Hogwarts crest from the banners in the Great Hall. “This note will allow you to purchase what you will need for the school year. Just hand it to the sales consultant and they will be able to assist you with the rest.”
Just then, the door opened admitting Hermione.
“You called Headmaster?” Hermione asked as if he had just yelled down to her. Ashleigh was completely confused; he had just been talking to her. She was sure Hermione was right in the head but maybe there was something else she didn’t know about the girl.
“Yes Miss Granger. I would like to ask you quite a big favor. Feel free to turn me down; I understand after all that it is your N.E.W.T. year. If it is not too much trouble, could you possibly find time to help Miss Grey with her studies? You do have the highest grades in school and are Head Girl; it would be a great advantage to Miss Grey if you were to help her.”
Hermione looked as if Christmas and her Birthday had come early.
“Oh yes! I’d love to. I can show you how to maximize your time to the fullest potential. I can’t wait!” Hermione was bouncing in her seat at the prospect of lending her knowledge to another student, and to be asked and praised as the smartest student in the school by the Headmaster himself! She didn’t think this day could get any better.
“Miss Granger, I would like you to apparate Miss Grey to Diagon Alley tomorrow after you visit Hogsmeade so that she may purchase the necessary supplies. I expect you will know what she needs. The gates will be open for you until six o’clock. I expect you to be back by that time.”
“Yes sir.”
“Well then, that is all. You may head back to your dorm and do try to get a good night’s sleep Miss Grey. I have a feeling you are going to need it.” Dumbledore said with a kind smile.
