The formation that did not quite look natural left a clear shape in the form of an oval picture frame open in the tree trunk. After looking around it, it was clear to Luna that the only visible change, and the only possible visual clue, was the change in shape. Otherwise it was a normal tree, with normal leaves and normal branches. Nothing remarkable and nothing clear relating to Ginny’s notion of clue.
“Great. I have shape, but no context. So, what can you hide from me, tree? What is this mystery shape telling me?” Luna spoke softly, mostly to herself. She tried putting her wand on the shape, resulting in nothing. Turning to Ginny, she then continued:
“I would assume that this isn’t something that requires a spell to move forward? It does not feel like a magic tree; like those I usually take care of. Nor does it appear to be a completely natural tree. There is a humming, a vibration, in the leaves that I can’t really place. I think it is communicating with us in some way, or is at least trying to. So how to translate it?” The reasoning had been aimed towards Ginny, but the end was clearly towards the tree. The tree did however not respond.
“Well, you know that some of those that can’t speak English communicates in other, different ways. Some growl, some smell, some speak Irish. Some creatures even react very well to touch. You might just need to try harder to communicate, in a purer way.” Ginny said, head turned towards Luna, feet touching the water in the lake.
She then added, with a smile: “I doubt the tree will answer you in English”.
Without responding, Luna tried to put her hand in the oval-shaped shape. The tree answered. Not obviously, but it shook slightly, and several leaves rustled down. It had, somewhat, responded to Luna’s touch. So, she touched it again. And the same reaction happened again.
“Hmm, it gets curiouser and curiouser” Luna mumbled, while Ginny looked at her with a small smile. Luna was lost in thought. “So how to get you to speak? Perhaps, if I go with a… gentler approach”. She said and stroked it slowly and tenderly.
There was no immediate noticeable reaction, but it became clear rather fast that something was happening. The tree began to vibrate, slowly at first, starting at the utmost tip of the branches. As it became more and more noticeable, the leaves also began to glow in a red, deep colour. The vibration moved inwards and throughout the tree, and soon all of it shook with vibrant colour.
But as quickly as the change started, as quickly were it waning down. Soon it stood completely still again, except for the smallest of rustles in the leaves, moved by the wind that came from nowhere and escaped back there. It slowly settled into a resemblance of the same scenery as before, but only almost. Change had come. It would come again.
In fact, it had not stopped yet. Luna only stood and looked, silently, as the tree continued to change, only more subtly now. Luna had taken a step back, but it had not stopped the changes. Where the oval formation once had been only a hole, deep black in colour, remained, but it was not still. Before the women’s eyes it sunk back into the tree, leaving an opening just big enough for a book. And just like Chekhov’s gun, a book appeared.
“I spoke too son, it appears” Luna said, after everything had calmed down. “Things got even more curious. A tree reacting to touch, and spawns a book. A bit weird, but I do enjoy the turns our sessions has taken. This is definitely better than when you tried to hide – What was it? – a rock in a cave.”
“Come on, that was my second time! And it’s not like you always have had perfect stuff to hide!” Ginny said, as she got up from the lakeside and walked over to Luna.
Luna smiled as Ginny got worked up. It was always fun to tease the girl touched by fire, and adulthood had not changed that at all. She chuckled while she took out the book from the tree, and read the cover just as Ginny reached her.
“’Xochiquetzal – A tale of birds and butterflies’… My, my, how interesting. I do not quite recognise the name, but I believe it to be of… South American origin perhaps? Central?” Luna looked at Ginny, trying to ascertain an answer. “Central” Ginny interjected. “Perhaps even from the civilisation of Aztec. I thought we could enlighten ourselves a bit, a beautiful night like this.”
“Oh did you really? How nice of you!” Luna said, without any hint of sarcasm. “I do appreciate the attempt to make us more knowledgeable. But I haven’t really figured out why you chose to hide this book. Not that I mind, just the sudden interest in Aztec culture seem a bit out of place, dear”
“Well, I can’t take sole credit for this interest, it’s somewhat newfound, together with – well – Hermione. She came with the suggestion” A light blush rose on Ginny’s cheeks as she spoke. “But the book isn’t the final goal of the evening, just another clue on the way. Sorry, but you need to keep on looking – the book might even be useful for you.”
Author's note: A shorter chapter, and alas, no funny stuff yet. It will come soon though.
