Alex stretched as she walked outside and looked around at the gardens. She watched as some house elves were trimming some rose bushes and removed dead flowers, planting new ones. As she scanned the grounds her eyes caught a flash of movement to the right and she watched closely as a tabby cat made its way through the flowers. She smirked and whistled alerting the cat that she'd seen her and it turned to look at her. She pointed towards the large fountain and the cat nodded its head before running off down the path. She looked back at the house before following the cat and upon reaching the fountain stopped in front of the cat and smirked.
“You are not very subtle Minerva and I have suspicions why you are here. Albus sent you to spy on us and see what we were trying to hide didn't he?” as she asked this the cat transfigured back into it's human form and McGonagall stood with her hands folded in front of her.
“Yes he did send me here, but only because he suspects you are hiding something” the older witch said, refusing to look Alex in the eye.
“If Dumbledore is going to be so bold to send someone here to find out what I am teaching them then I have no choice but to tell you. I am teaching them how to use elemental spells so if needed they can use the Amulets of the Elements during the war” Minerva gasped upon hearing this and raised her hand to her chest.
“You can't Alexandria! They are not ready to learn this! They are still children-”
“Children?! They have all been forced to grow up in a world where every day there is fear that a maniac will come after them. They all have a target on their heads and Voldemort wants to kill them. This war will come sooner rather than later and I would rather see them ready for it than sit back and watch them get themselves killed because an old man in a castle wants to play with their lives!” the dark haired witch growled, her eyes glowing a bright blue.
“I understand Alexandria but do you think there is another way?” the older woman asked and Alex shook her head.
“I know you all fear they are not ready Minerva, but they are stronger than you all think. They have all been through so much and it is time we stop treating them like children and start treating them like the adults they are going to become. Voldemort will not hesitate just because they are children; look at what happened to Cedric Diggory. He wants to kill them and he will stop at nothing to do so, and that is why I am giving them the best chance they will have to be able to get through this war.”
“What about the corruption from the amulets?”
“The amulets are cursed by a spell and I need to break the curse before I can give them to them. I am researching how to do so but if I am unable to do it I will not give them the amulets. I am simply at the moment only teaching them the elemental spells” the older witch stepped forward and sighed placing her hand on Alex's shoulder.
“Be careful Alexandria and please keep them safe” Alex nodded and Minerva reached into her robes and pulled out an envelope handing it to Alex, “Dumbledore asked me to give you this.”
“What is this about?” Alex asked, opening the envelope and reading the letter contained inside, “He can't be serious?!”
“The position is cursed, and we need a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Severus has to go back to Potions so he considered you.”
“I'll think it over and give him my answer in a week” she said and the older woman nodded before transfiguring back into a cat and running off down the path, Alex shaking her head afterwards, “The old man truly has lost his mind.”
Over the next two weeks Alex had the four training long and hard. The training courses were starting to wear them all out and they were beginning to get exhausted at the amount of work they were doing. Alex now had them doing physical exercises as well in the morning to keep their bodies in shape so their magic would be at it's peak. Ron was doing very nicely with his magic, but still used it to play jokes on Draco, causing fights between them that resulted in Hermione pushing Draco away and Harry pushing Ron. It had come to a head when Ron froze Draco's wand, Draco throwing him into a wall with a gust of wind, and then both of them throwing punches. Alex had enough of it and instantly threw them both to opposite sides of the room they were in, both of them hitting the wall. As they looked up at her they noticed her eyes were glowing and there was sparks coming from her hands.
“I've had enough of this shit with you two! How many fights do I have to break up before you two learn to start working together?!” she yelled.
“Not my fault Weasley starts it every time.” Draco mumbled.
“You think I believe that bullshit?!” she shrieked at him, “Last week you deliberately caused a gust of wind in the library where he was studying. Then the two of you started dueling in there! Do you think that I don't notice that its because you two are jealous of each other?”
“What-”
“I am not blind, nor stupid Weasley!” she yelled cutting him off, “I know the both of you have been at each others throats ever since that night at the club.”
“That's not true!”
“Oh really? Every time one of you is around Hermione the other starts a fight or causes a problem. You two are like two dogs fighting over a bone!”
“Malfoy doesn't deserve to be around her at all! He's nothing more than a filthy ferret!” the redhead growled, struggling against the spell.
“If this is how you're acting with just Malfoy how are you going to handle it if she finds her mate?” Alex asked and he snarled.
“Who's to say that it's not me?”
“The signs would have been there all along Weasley! You're not Hermione's mate no matter how much you wish you were” Draco said, his voice dripping with venom, Alex noticing his eyes turning the same black they had at Potter's.
“Like you would know anything about it Malfoy-”
“Actually I do know quite a bit Weasley since I am in the same predicament as her. Our mates are our entire world. We will do anything to ensure they are safe, happy, and loved. Even if that means keeping insignificant assholes from trying to steal her away” he stated, Alex's eyes bulging at what he said, as Ron rolled his eyes.
“Weasley, you are not her mate and you cannot change that. You need to accept that and get over it” Alex waited for him to look at her before continuing, “Being mates with someone is a completely different level than what you are used to. Take a look at me and Khira and how we are. I would do anything to ensure her safety, even giving my own life up to do so. Any time she is upset I feel it, and the same is for every emotion she feels. When I first started courting her it was rough because she rejected me in the beginning and it nearly killed us. We were on opposite sides of the spectrum, but we matched and even though she rejected me in the beginning we started getting to know each other and here we are now.”
“And it's been complete bliss ever since then” Khira stated, walking over to Alex and kissed her cheek, “Believe it or not Weasley, regardless of what you think, the world is not all black and white. There are shades of gray in everything and everyone. Hermione and Draco both have mates, and if they find them, they both will have to choose to be with them or not. I can tell them from first hand experience that it hurts like hell to feel the pain your mate will feel from being rejected. It doesn't mean that they cannot be with someone else, you can go most of your life never meeting your mate. It just will mean that they will most times cut off the relationship they had, for the one they will get. Fate only brings those who are worthy of each other to be together.”
“So even if Hermione was with someone and we didn't agree with them, they would not harm her on purpose?” Harry asked and the two nodded, “Well that's a relief.”
“Ron, I'm sorry but you and I are just friends. There cannot be anything more between us. I know you are not my mate and you need to accept that. I've been trying to keep it quiet, but I think it's time I tell you and Harry this because if I don't then it will just cause further problems later on” Hermione said, turning to Draco, “Do you mind?”
“Go ahead” he replied.
“Draco and I met each other before Hogwarts...Let me finish Ron” she said, holding up her hand to stop him from interrupting, “We met one day when my Gran went to visit his mum and dad. We got along really well back then and we didn't even know each others blood status. Lucius wiped our memories of that day but we remember now thanks to Alex. We've been trying to put the past behind us and you two need to do the same. Draco isn't like he is at school. That was just how he was expected to act. When we're training in here privately I can see the real person he is. He wants to change, but you two need to give him a chance, and you also need to stop provoking him Ron.”
“How can you be so forgiving Hermione? He treated you like garbage all these years and you are so willing to forgive him? You may be able to but not me!” he said angrily.
“Then let's finish this once and for all” Khira stated and they turned to her, “Let them duel it out! No more fights, no more pranks, just duel it out and the winner is the winner.”
“That sounds like a good idea to me” Alex stated, looking between the two, “You two willing to do that?”
“Anything to get a chance to knock Malfoy on his arse” Ron said with a sneer.
“Likewise Weasley” Draco snarled.
Alex nodded and moved to the side of the room and the others followed her, Draco and Ron taking their places on opposite sides of the room. She told them the rules, no spells meant to kill and no cheating, and told them to begin. Ron fired the first spell but Draco blocked it firing a stunning spell at him. Both began firing spells back and forth at each other rapidly each expertly blocking and dodging them as they flew past them or hit shielding spells. As the duel got more heated Alex noticed Hermione becoming more and more nervous and moved to stand next to her.
“Something wrong Hermione?” she asked just loud enough for the girl to hear.
“I had a vision the other day, and Draco is going to use Sectumsempra” she said quietly, “The vision was blurry, but I know it was him because of his voice.”
“I'll keep a look out for it and if needed step in and stop them” Alex stated and the girl nodded.
They watched as Ron took aim and fired a couple spells at Draco, which the blond easily deflected. Draco fired a red lighted spell at the red head. Ron threw three more spells at Draco, who only retaliated with a wind gust spell that knocked the red head down. He quickly recovered however and fired a rapid stream of blue and yellow lighted spells at the blond, before shooting a water geyser at the blond, throwing him back into the wall. He started smirking at the blond, but soon found himself thrown into a wall as well by a powerful wind gust. Ron growled in anger and fired another couple spells, while Draco just cast a shield.
“Stupefy!” Ron yelled, but the spell soared directly past Draco's head.
“That's it Weasley! I'm ending this once and for all!” Draco yelled and Alex took this as her cue.
“Accio wands!” Alex yelled, as both of their wands came soaring into her outstretched hand.
“Alex give me my wand back” Draco stated, walking over.
“No, because you were going to use sectumsempra on him” she said, “Draco you could have killed him.”
“Killed? I wouldn't have killed him” the blond said.
“Draco, what were you thinking? You know what that spell can do!” she yelled, pointing her own wand at a dummy in the corner, “Sectumsempra!”
They all watched as a white light flew from her wand and struck the dummy, causing slash marks to appear all over it. Hermione took a glance at both of them and noticed Ron was sweating in fear, while Draco looked to have a look of horror on his face.
“That spell must NEVER be used on someone just to use it” she said, walking up to him and holding his wand out for him to take, “I even hear you think of using that spell, I will take your wand and snap it in two. Is that clear?”
“Yes Alex” he mumbled.
“These fights stop today. If you cannot think of something nice to say or do, then do not speak or do anything. You are both old enough to know better, so start acting like it! Is that clear?” she asked and they both nodded.
“Yes” the two of them mumbled and she sighed.
“Good, you may have your wands back” she said, handing them back, “Now I want both of you to go to opposite sides of the estate and calm down.”
“Weasley can stay here. I'm going to go to the stables” Draco stated.
“Draco wait. I'm coming with you!” Hermione called behind the blond as he walked out the door, running to catch up with him.
“What's with them being friendly all the sudden?” Ron asked as Harry walked over.
“Don't know” Harry shrugged.
“I don't like them spending time together Harry. I keep feeling like something is off with those two.”
“Just drop it Ron. Hermione is old enough she can make her own decisions” Harry stated.
“Right” he said, throwing a water spell at the dummy in the corner with such force it splashed back on both of them.
“Geez Ron!” Harry said, pulling his wand out and drying them both off.
“Sorry” he said with a sheepish grin.
Hermione and Draco walked out to the stables enjoying the silence. Hermione kept thinking back to the way things had changed between all of them. She had gotten to see the other side of Draco in the past two weeks during their training and it was just like they were kids again, but something else was there. She felt there was something else about all of it, but couldn't put her finger on it. She'd been thinking a lot about the prophecy as well. She didn't know it, but the blond had been doing the same thinking. He kept smelling something in the estate that caught his attention, but couldn't figure it out. A few nights before he'd smelt it again and upon following the smell he noticed it led him to the small ballroom on the bottom floor, just off of the foyer. Inside was Hermione, and she was dancing. As they walked to the stables his mind drifted back to that night in the ballroom.
Hermione was dancing to a techno beat that played over the radio she had charmed in the corner. As he listened to the music and watched her his pulse quickened and he couldn't turn away. If he was honest to himself, it was the sexiest thing he'd ever seen. He continued watching for a few more minutes before hearing someone walking towards him. He turned and thanked Merlin himself he wasn't THAT excited upon seeing Alex standing there.
“Having fun spying on a lion Draco?”
“I didn't mean to” he said quietly, watching her look in the room.
“I wouldn't blame you, but be careful Draco. Don't need you getting in a bad situation” she said with a smile, before walking away the direction she came.
“Don't I know it” he said, but heard her stop walking.
“If you like her Draco, you should just tell her you do” he heard the vampire call out to him, before turning back around to come face to face with Hermione, “Hermione you scared me.”
“What are you doing down here? Spying on me?” she asked, with a smirk.
“Not intentionally” he said, noticing her clothing choice; boy shorts and a t-shirt, “I smelled something and was led here but couldn't figure out where it was coming from?”
“What did it smell like?”
“Honestly?” she nodded and he sighed, lowering his head, “It smelled like a mix between potion ingredients and parchment. Then for some odd reason I started noticing hints of lavender in it.”
“Really?”
“Yes” he replied quietly.
“It fits you actually” he looked up at her, “Your personality, it fits. You always have loved potions class and you were one of the best in school. The lavender is a bit odd though.”
“Yeah, I guess you're right” he said.
“I'm going to go get cleaned up and go to bed. Good night” she said, walking down the hall and up the stairs.
Draco was brought back to the present by her snapping her fingers in front of his face. He looked at her and noticed she was smiling lightly at him.
“What?”
“You seemed to phase out there for a second. What were you thinking about?” she asked.
“Nothing really” he replied.
“Liar.”
“Is it so bad that I don't want to tell you what I was thinking about?”
“No, but if I guess it will you tell me?” she asked with a grin.
“Maybe” he replied, grinning back.
“You won't tell me...you are such an arse Draco.”
“So I'm the arse because YOU want to know what I was thinking in the privacy of my own mind?”
“Yes you are” she replied and they both started chuckling.
“If I go insane, I'm blaming you Hermione” he said quietly.
“Well, at least you won't be alone in St. Mungo's. I hear Lockhart has recently started remembering students” she laughed as she noticed him grimace at the memory of their 2nd year professor.
“I'll be sure to pay them to never let me near that cretin.”
“Draco, were you really going to use sectumsempra on Ron?” she asked, stopping and turning to him.
“I was thinking of it” he said quietly.
“Promise me you won't ever use that spell-”
“You know I cannot do that. If I ever see Lucius I will be tempted to use it” he said cutting her off.
“I know you will be, but you also need to overcome that anger with him-”
“It's not that easy Hermione. He killed my mother” he turned away from her as he said this, to keep her from seeing he was almost crying.
“In taking revenge, a man is but even with his enemy, but in passing it over he is superior” she said, placing her hands on his shoulders, “You're superior to him Draco, I know you are. ”
She felt his shoulders sag before hearing his breathing become slightly labored, and walked in front of him to see he had a couple tear stains on his face. She reached up and wiped them away, lightly smiling at him. He reached up and held her hand in his before wrapping his arms around her and hugging her lightly.
“Thank you” he whispered.
“You know I'll always be here if you need me” she said, leaning back and smiling at him.
Draco smiled back before he noticed the smell came over him again, but this time it was much stronger. He thought back to the night outside the ballroom and remembered that the smell had faded that night just after Hermione had left. He looked at her and noticed she was looking at him oddly.
“Do you smell that?”
“Smell what? I don't smell anything. Well, besides that cologne you always wear” she said, blushing slightly.
“I need to go talk to Alex for a little bit” he said suddenly, turning and walking down the hall.
“Draco what's wrong?” Hermione called after him.
“I don't know. I'll explain later!” he yelled back, changing his pace to a run.
He reached the foyer to find Khira was walking into the dining room. He stopped her and asked where Alex was and she said that she had gone up to her office to work on some things before dinner. He nodded and walked down the hall to the large oak doors. After knocking, he entered to find Alex reading a letter, which she promptly put down upon seeing him enter before smiling up at him.
“What is it Draco?” she asked.
“You said that veela will smell pheromone to signal who is their mate correct?”
“Yes that is correct. Why do you ask?” she leaned back in her chair as she asked this.
“The other night, I smelled something then and I followed the smell and it led me down to the ballroom. Today I smelled it again.”
“What did you smell?” she asked.
“Potion ingredients and parchment, but I also smelled hints of lavender” he stated.
“When you first smelled it, did the aroma die out after a while?”
“Yes, but only after I talked to Hermione” he said and she smirked at him, “No! It can't be!”
“What Draco?” she asked innocently.
“My mate can't be Hermione!” he said, standing up from his chair and pacing back and forth.
“Answer these following questions” she said and he stopped and looked at her before nodding.
“Alright.”
“You smell it when you're near Hermione?”
“Yes.”
“The smell dies down after you've had contact with her, verbally or physically?”
“Yes.”
“You've felt a bit possessive over her when it comes to Harry and Ron?”
“Just Weasley.”
“Draco, I won't say she is your mate, but obviously you're being given a sign that you two are connected. Earlier before that duel did you even realize what you said to Weasley?” she asked and he shook his head “You said 'Even if that means keeping insignificant assholes from trying to steal her away' to him Draco. Your veela was clawing at the surface and being possessive as hell.”
“How can she not be my mate though? Why would I act like that if she wasn't my mate?”
“I had the same thing happen to me when Narcissa and I first got together. I was possessive and thought she was my mate, but it turned out she wasn't. It changed when I started smelling new smells and realized it was Khira instead” she said quietly, “At first I smelled oranges, pine, and parchment. When I started courting Khira, it switched to pine, the ocean, and the perfume Khira wore then. She still wears it even today because she knows I love it so much.”
“So it doesn't always mean a bonding?”
“No it doesn’t, and it could simply mean that right now your veela side wants her around because it finds comfort in her. You must wait and find out as time goes on” she said with a smile.
“What if I want to try making it be more than just wanting her around as comfort?”
“If you're worried I'll disapprove, you're mistaken. Now Harry and Ron on the other hand...”
“They'll kill me” he finished and she nodded slightly.
“Ron for sure, but I don't think Harry will as much.”
“What if I find out she isn't my mate? I don't want to put her through that” he said quietly.
“Let your veela nature take control on those aspects. It will guide you where you need to go” she said with a smile
“Thanks for your help Alex” he said, standing and walking out the door.
'So Draco thinks Hermione is his mate? I think the chances of the two of them being mates is very likely honestly' she heard her wife think through their bond.
'Must you always listen in?' she thought back.
'If you don't want me to listen in you should command me not to.'
'Don't start Khira...' she thought with a growl.
'Love you too' she heard the laughter in her wife's thoughts and shook her head thinking, 'What have I gotten myself into?'
