The next night after their first classes concluded, Severus found himself being talked into breaking a few rules. Such as, being out after curfew, and doing a little exploring on his part, being that he had never been inside of the Room of Requirement. It sounded great to him. He easily agreed, and soon, he and Hermione were making their way to said mystery room.
"Where is it?" he asked, eyeing her right hand, seemingly forever clutching that blasted beaded bag. "And why do you always feel the need for that satchel to be graphed to your palm?"
Hermione laughed, smiling as she shook her head. "No one talks like you, Severus."
Severus scoffed. "What's that supposed to mean? Intelligently?" he smirked at her.
"It's on the seventh floor, to answer your first question. To answer your second question... It has all of my girlish needs contained inside of it. Such as, -"
"Stop right there." Severus held up his hands. "Please, do not finish that sentence."
"Alright then, I'll just show you when we reach our destination." Hermione laughed, knowing she wasn't going to say what he obviously thought she was going to say. The thought was pushed out of her mind, as her overactive thought-process moved onto another subject. All the junk in the Room of Requirement. She knew she could only hope that the twenty year difference had been kind; that the Diadem had not moved from where she saw it just two months prior in her time.
"This is a wall." Severus stated bluntly, his famous bored look plastered on his face as he stared at the cold stone wall.
"Close your eyes, and think 'I need the place where everything is hidden.'" Hermione whispered.
Severus obliged to her instruction and closed his dark eyes. "I need the place where everything is hidden... Merlin's sake.." he thought.
"Now open your eyes. Watch." Hermione whispered again. Severus slowly opened his eyes, immediately widening as he saw a door fabricate right before them. "I'll be damned..." he mused.
Hermione grinned, grasping his hand, wasting no time to pull him inside. Severus couldn't believe what he was seeing. A room, larger than even the Great Hall, piled high with artifacts from so many different years, sprawled out before him. Hermione caught the look in his eyes as he took it all in. "Amazing, isn't it? The Room of Requirement will give you anything you need. If you need to escape, even. It's the safest room in the castle." she explained.
"So... Why are we in rubbish-haven? Not that it isn't impressive, but why all this?" he asked, looking around as he began to walk through the place, staring up at the piles, towering over him like skyscrapers.
"We're looking for Ravenclaw's Lost Diadem." Hermione said as she followed him. They were making their way closer to the table on which the desired red velveteen jewelry box sat. "That reminds me..."
Severus stopped and turned around, watching as Hermione unzipped her bag. She dipped her hand in, looking more and more awkward as her arm seemed to disappear further and further into it as she fumbled around for the sought object. The slick sound of steel sliding over material could be heard as Hermione pulled it out.
"The Sword of Gryffindor." Severus said, noting the rubies glinting on the hilt. "It was in the Headmaster's office just last year. Do you mean to tell me this is the real one?"
"Yes." Hermione began before taking a deep breath, knowing she was going to have to explain. "In our second year, there was a terror in the school. Messages were being written in blood on the walls in the corridors. Things like, "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the Heir, beware." They tried to deny that the Chamber was real. Professors Dumbledore, and McGonagall, I mean. Said the school had been searched many times. Every nook and corner for an entrance to such a Chamber, but it was never found.
At a dueling club meeting,-" Hermione began to laugh, remembering it, "You were brilliant, by the way. This total sod, Gilderoy Lockhart, was teaching Defense Against The Dark Arts, and it was so completely obvious you hated him, so you blasted him, knocking him on his arse." she smiled with tears in her eyes. Severus watched her, smiling sadly. Hermione went on. "Anyway... During the dueling club... Draco Malfoy, casted "Serpentsortia" at Harry. The snake began to race down the platform, and then out of nowhere, Harry begins making these hissing noises, and we all soon realize... He's commanding the snake.
So, naturally, everyone thinks that Harry is the "Heir" after that. Long story short... Harry, Ron and I, being the meddlesome, troublesome kids that we were, went looking for the Chamber. First few times, we had no luck. And then one night, I got petrified,-"
"Petrified." Severus repeated, raising his brows.
Hermione nodded. "Yes. I had been in the Library, researching snakes, because Harry was the only one who could hear it; the Basilisk, moving through the walls. I put two and two together and realized it was using the pipes as passageways. The Basillisk has these eyes that will kill anyone who looks into them. So I started using a mirror to peer around corners and, one night, I saw it's reflection, and became petrified.
Harry and Ron found the piece of parchment in my hand, so they took Lockhart down to the Chamber. Inside, was Lord Voldemort. He had materialized from Tom Riddle's Diary. Fawkes came and stabbed the snake's eyes out, blinding it, so Harry received the upper hand when the Phoenix dropped the old sorting hat. Inside of it, was this,-" Hermione said, holding the sword up, letting the blade glint triumphant-like in the light.
"So then what happened?" Severus asked quietly.
"Well... Harry used the blade to kill the Basilisk. It wasn't until we were hunting Horcruxes when we realized why Dumbledore used his will to hint to Harry that the Sword would destroy them. It was the only thing that could. Basilisk Venom."
"The Sword of Gryffindor, only takes in that which makes it stronger." Severus said slowly, putting it all together. "Very interesting, indeed. So this... Lost Diadem, is here?"
Hermione nodded again. "Yes. Right behind you, actually." she said, pointing to the red box, thankfully, still sitting in the exact same place. "I need you to open that box, and move away from me. Keep your wand drawn. Horcruxes can have an ill effect on one's mind when it knows it's 'life' is in danger. If you are too close... It might try to persuade you to kill me, or vice versa. Be prepared for anything."
Severus nodded and moved away. "I'll open it from here." he said, putting ample space between them. Giving her time to adjust her stance with the sword held high over her head, Severus casted a wordless spell, successfully opening the box.
Immediately, Hermione's head was filled with a horrible ringing as she gripped the Sword hard. She stood, staring at the striking blue gems, becoming fixed on them. Severus was startled, watching her eyes grow glassy. Suddenly, the sound of something comparable to an avalanche came from the back of the expansive room. He turned around to see the kingdom of junk piles falling rapidly.
"Fuck!" he exclaimed, running forward. Grasping the sword low on the hilt still resting, now loosely, in Hermione's hands, he wrenched it from her. Without a moment's thought, he brought the sword down hard on the Diadem, instantly halting the avalanche that had the capacity to bury them alive.
Hermione was snapped out of her daze. She blinked rapidly, shaking her head. Looking around, her eyes grew wide, noting the drastic change in the back of the room, that had obviously been headed their way.
"How did you destroy it so easily?" Hermione asked breathlessly, watching smokey black wisps emit from the now busted and cracked gems.
"Let's get out of here." Severus said as he bent to pick up her beaded bag from the floor to drop the sword back inside of it. He placed his arm around Hermione's waist and they made their way back to the door.
"Let's request a different room, shall we?" he suggested as they stepped outside, watching the stone wall close again. "I'll explain."
Hermione closed her eyes. "I need somewhere to hide. Somewhere home-like." she thought. She slowly opened her eyes to watch as a door once again formed on the wall, and she and Severus went inside.
"Brilliant." Hermione said, looking around at the comfortable looking sofas and not to mention the roaring hearth in the back of the room. Severus took a seat on the sofa nearest to them, gesturing for her to sit.
"Occlumency. I know, Severus. It makes perfect sense." she said, sitting down. "The Horcrux couldn't affect you because you've already trained yourself in Occlumency."
"Well, that answers that." Severus sighed, placing his arm around her. "Saved me a load of time."
"And you would save us a load of time if you agree to be the one to kill them whenever we find them." Hermione said, laying her head on his chest. She suddenly felt very exhausted. A mind-fuck like a Horcrux was mentally tiring.
"Are you going to be alright?" Severus asked, also sounding tired as he ran his fingers through her hair.
Hermione nodded. "Yes. I believe so."
Severus laid his head against the sofa, staring up at the stone rafters in the high ceiling. For some reason, he had it in his mind to see if maybe it could rain in the Room of Requirement. Or snow, or something. Having spaced out on his thoughts, he was startled as Hermione shrieked and jumped up from the sofa, just as a heavy raindrop hit her, trickling down her face.
"Severus! You're making it rain!" she giggled, holding her arms out, palms up to catch the drops. The rain fell harder; the sound of heavy drops pelting every surface in the room was almost deafening. Hermione began to twirl around in circles, and Severus watched, also becoming soaked as he reveled in her smile.
"Dance with me!" she grinned, holding her hand out for him. Severus grasped her hand and stood to pull her in closer to him. She wrapped her arms up around his neck and began to sway slowly as he drew his arms tighter around her. Hermione stared into his eyes, reflecting the fire still going strong in the hearth despite the rain.
"Are you happy?" she asked, unsure of what his answer would be like. Severus stared back at her. The words "Yes, I am happy" had never left his mouth, not once in his life. It felt foreign to be asked if he was. Yet, it was just another reason, all the more, why he was falling so hard for Hermione Granger.
"Because I am..." she whispered as the rain slowed and stopped.
"I am not sure what that actually feels like, Hermione..." Severus began quietly. "But if I were to put a word to the feeling I have when I am around you... Then, yes, I think that I am quite happy."
"Good." she whispered, gently pressing her lips to his. "No one kisses like you, either." she smiled as she drew away.
"I'll take that as a complement. Shall we go and put on some dry clothing and go to bed? I honestly have no wish for a detention." he said. Hermione nodded, and he grasped her hand to lead her from the room.
As quietly as possible, Severus and Hermione were making their way back to the Dungeons when the voice of James Potter made them pause their stride.
"Snivellus!" he hollared, coming from behind them. Hermione whirled around, glaring daggers. "I believe that if you'd like to keep your tongue in your mouth, you'll address him properly."
"Well, then, Severus. Having your girlfriend fight all your battles for you?" James snorted, shaking his head.
"I am fighting nothing for him." Hermione said. She took a step closer to James with every word she spoke. "However, I am sick, and tired of watching you and your 'group' walk all over him as if he's some sort of welcome mat for you to wipe your fucking trainers on." she spat, poking James hard in the chest with her forefinger.
James held up his hands, "Alright then... alright. I wasn't coming to pick a fight, honestly.-"
Severus felt his brow furrow in amazement and confusion. He had never seen James Potter back down so easily. Maybe, because nobody ever stood up to him.
"Really, Professor Dumbledore asked me to seek you two out. Apparently he'd like a meeting with you both." James went on. "And Lily says she wants to speak to Severus."
Severus sighed, rolling his eyes. "Why." he stated rather than asked.
"Why? Were you two not friends before?" Potter asked, staring pointedly at the darker teen.
"Friends." Severus snorted with fake amusement. "Yes. Sure. But she hasn't spoken to me in over a year. I see no reason to run to her on her whim." he said, grabbing Hermione's hand to turn in the direction from which they came. James didn't say another word. Just watched after them as Hermione laced her fingers with Severus.
