The year passes and as Evie’s time grows near, they don’t know how to manage the birth. They can’t go to either a Muggle or wizarding hospital, the inevitable birth record would eventually be discovered by the wrong people and it’s too great a risk.
Remus comes up with a solution; he knows of a werewolf midwife, who, like him, is frequently unemployed because people are too afraid that she’s somehow going to infect their children at birth. She comes to stay with them until the birth and Evie finds her both kind and knowledgeable.
As Evie goes into labor, Sirius holds her hand tightly and prays that the child will be strong and healthy. Evie delivers a son, and as the midwife cuts the cord and puts him into Sirius’s arms, both Evie and Sirius weep with joy. But Evie’s contractions continue, and she surprises all of them with a daughter as well; they had no idea she was carrying twins.
They agree on naming them James and Lily, it just seems as though there are no other names they could possibly choose. Sirius is amazed by them daily, unable to believe that he’s actually a father. Evie laughs at him as he showers them with gifts that they won’t be able to use or appreciate for years to come, but she understands what motivates him and doesn’t try to stop him. Most of their friends stop in to see the twins, congratulating them and wishing them well. Sirius asks Remus to be the twins’ godfather, and he agrees, touched.
One day, Evie finds Sirius in an unused bedroom on the third floor, and he’s looking at a photo of him, James and Lupin that she had never seen. He turns to look at her, somewhat grim; she can tell how much he still misses her father, and how much he also still wishes he could avenge his death. She thinks he’s still carrying a bit of resentment that he let her talk him and Remus out of killing Wormtail, but she knows that it wouldn’t have done any good if they had.
Quietly, she says, “Would you like to have that framed and put in the study?”
“I hadn’t thought about it, but yes, that would be nice. When James is older, I can show him who his grandfather was, who he was named for.”
She comes over to him and he drapes an arm around her, relaxing a bit into better humor. He grins and says, “I wonder what James would have thought about having me for a son-in-law. I’m not sure whether he’d have hugged me or decked me. Probably both, the same as Remus did.” He smiles down at her, and kisses her; and they go back downstairs.

Evie begins having dream-visions of Voldemort, including one where he has sent Nagini to attack Arthur Weasley at the Ministry offices late at night. She wakes screaming and Sirius holds her, asking what’s the matter; and she relates what she’s seen. Sirius is at first inclined to dismiss it as merely a bad dream, but Evie is so shaken that finally he goes to Phineas’s portrait and asks him to tell Dumbledore.
Phineas comes back and says that Dumbledore has called in some members of the Order to go check it out, he thinks there may have been something to it. Evie and Sirius settle in the study to wait for news, and finally Phineas returns and says that they got there just in time, Arthur was attacked but will be okay.
The following day, Dumbledore arrives and talks with Evie about these visions. He says, “If you can see into Voldemort’s mind, it is possible that he can also see into yours. We must do something about it as soon as possible. Professor Snape is a master of Occlumency, I will send him here to give you lessons in it. Today.”
Evie protests, saying “Please, Professor Dumbledore – please, anyone but him? I really don’t think he’s going to be happy about having to come here.”
Dumbledore looks over his glasses at her and says, “There is no-one else, nobody else is a master of it like he is. Whether he’s happy about it or not is irrelevant, it’s got to be done.”
Sirius isn’t too happy about the idea of Snape returning to Grimmauld place either, but even he has to agree that there is no-one else, and Evie sighs and agrees.
Snape arrives with his usual sneer, clearly even more unhappy to have to come back here, than they are about him coming back. He is completely merciless with her; sifting through her memories with ease and making especially snide comments about any that have to do with Sirius or her father. Finally Evie is so frustrated that she casts Legilimency back on him before he can do it to her again next.
She finds herself standing outside at Hogwarts, looking at Snape, obviously a student as he is wearing Slytherin robes, and probably in his sixth or seventh year. He’s sitting by himself under a tree, reading – and then a group of other boys approach him. She is shocked to recognize her father, and Sirius, and Lupin among them; and her father begins taunting Snape, who clearly just wants to be left alone.
Egged on by Sirius, James levitates Snape and turns him upside down, and then removes his trousers; leaving him hanging with his robes covering his face, skinny pale legs sticking out of shabby boxers above him, and everyone laughing at him. Evie is deeply shocked at their cruelty towards him, seeing more of the likes of Draco, Crabbe and Goyle in their actions than she’d like to admit.
Tears are in her eyes as Snape casts her out of his memories, and with barely suppressed fury he says that their lessons are at an end, he doesn’t care what Dumbledore says. She looks up at him in mute apology, and he holds her eyes for a long moment; and then with a swirl of robes, he is gone.
She understands now why he’s so antagonistic towards Sirius and why he also never had anything good to say about her father. When she sees Sirius later, she almost can’t look him in the eye herself, she had no idea that he and her father could exhibit such heartless behavior. Lupin at least had had the grace to look very uncomfortable during the whole episode, and had even put his hand on James’s arm to try to stop him at one point, but Sirius’s encouragement had overridden any objection Remus was making.
In bed that night, she turns away as Sirius caresses her. Sirius asks, “Evie – what is wrong?”
She won’t tell him at first, but finally she turns back towards him and tells him about the memory she saw in Snape’s mind. He looks somewhat ashamed, and says, “That was a long time ago. I can’t say I’m particularly proud of it. James and I – well, sometimes we brought the worst out in each other instead of the best. I know it’s no excuse, but we were young and full of typical teenage machismo, just the typical stupid things boys of that age do; and besides, Snape was as condescending towards us back then as he is now, it wasn’t as entirely unprovoked as it might have appeared.”
She’s still not completely convinced that she forgives him for it, but is at least somewhat mollified by his answer; and as he continues to look into her eyes and caress her, she can’t help but respond to his touch. The memory fades as her arousal grows, and soon they are making love as passionately as always.
But, since she never mastered Occlumency, the visions continue. She discovers that what Voldemort wants is a prophecy, held at the Ministry of Magic. After several more attempts by Voldemort to retrieve it in the following months, Dumbledore comes to visit again.
He says to Evie, “You must sneak into the Ministry and retrieve (and destroy) the prophecy. We already know what it says and don’t need it. If we don’t destroy it, I fear that Voldemort will find a way to coerce you into retrieving it for him. As long as it exists he won’t stop trying to find a way to obtain it.”
Evie agrees, and Sirius demands to go along with her – Dumbledore not only agrees but tells him that most of the rest of the Order will be going as well.
Evie finds the prophecy, and just as she is about to destroy it, the Death Eaters arrive. They are able to take several of the Order by surprise and take them hostage – including Sirius. Lucius Malfoy demands that she hand over the prophecy, and she does; and enraged, Sirius breaks free and hits Malfoy with a curse, causing him to drop the globe that contains the prophecy, and laughing as it shatters when it hits the floor.
A battle commences as the distraction of the shattered prophecy allows the rest of the Order to break free, and Sirius and Evie end up fighting side by side, near the Veil. Just as they’ve disarmed their opponents and are turning to smile at one another, Bellatrix materializes and casts Avada Kedavra at Sirius. In an instant, he is gone; he smiles sadly at Evie and disappears into the Veil, mouthing “I love you…” as he disappears.
Evie is prostrated by the loss; the battle continues on around her but she cannot see or hear it, she can only stare at the place where Sirius had been standing. Fortunately the Order prevails quickly, driving out the Death Eaters. Remus joins her at the Veil, taking her into his arms, and they both weep for Sirius as the rest of the Order keeps watch for any new threats.
They take her home to Grimmauld Place, and Remus and Tonks stay with her for a few days, both to help take care of the children, and also to take care of her. She walks around in a complete daze and cannot seem to stop weeping, the loss was so sudden and so great. She feels completely emptied, like she will never be whole again.
