Important Content Warning! Attention Fans of Draco!
Though I shouldn't have to do this, the track record I've seen on a couple of the stories I'm in the middle of tells me I have to.
Starting this chapter, I'm going to show Draco in what some would perceive as a very unflattering light and do something to him later on many won't like. I am not bashing him, I'm making that clear now, what I'm taking is something that was in canon and using it. If you can't handle that, hit the back button and move along to something else.
Keep in mind here where I'm basing this in canon. Where I dropped everyone in is basically the end of what would have been Half-Blood Prince, something that didn't take place for the most part though some elements did. Also keep in mind that the dose of reality Draco got about being a Death Eater didn't happen because of that. If the only canon you know is the movies, you're not going to understand some of the references made at the end of Order of the Phoenix or some of what Draco said and did. Those were not in the movie. And what he said was not nice. Remember that. Go look it up if you have to so you see it. Also keep in mind something the great lady JK Rowling, herself, said; Draco is Regulus Black in so many ways. He was all for being a Death Eater, and what came with it, until he got a dose of reality. He hasn't had that in this story.
If this is something you can't handle, move along to another story. Shrieking reviews about picking on him will just result in me pointing and laughing at you for ignoring a very blatant warning!
The PsychoFruit
Chapter 6
Elbow resting on his knee, head in his hand, eyes covered by most of it, Severus was shaking his head at what he had just viewed in the Pensive. Going in, he wasn't sure what to expect when it came to an explanation of what in Merlin's name happened, but what he heard wasn't even something he considered. And he didn't know how to react. Quietly, he asked, “Minerva? Did they spend the weekend in the Shrieking Shack like Lupin said?”
“They did,” Albus said with a sigh, stroking his beard with a trembling hand as he read through the parchment with the readings on it Remus had provided then glanced through the spell in the book. Shaking his head, setting the parchment down, he explained, “Minerva told me she had given them permission to do that as Harry was having problems over all that was going on. She had my approval for it.”“Merlin,” was all Severus was able to utter, shaking his head.“Is Remus right? There is no way to undo this and wasn't anything they could do before?” A very pale Minerva asked, looking at Albus.“None,” Albus told her gloomily. “In fact, the two should be applauded for finding whatever spell they did to negate the worst of the effects of the mistake.” Slumping, he explained quietly, “From what Remus explained, and the readings to back it up, they couldn't do anything. By the time they met Harry, the spell already would have taken hold and started to push for completion. There was nothing they could do but what they did.” Looking at the innocuous-appearing parchment on his desk, he shook his head, “Looking into whatever spell James accidentally created won't do us any good. I believe I know why they are hiding certain things and it needs left alone. We'll press on from here and leave it be. Arthur will continue to deal with them, but they need to be left out of the war.”“We need them,” Severus said firmly, straightening up. “Leave it to James Potter to try something ancient and screw it up, thus mucking up something we desperately need at this time!”“I want no offense taken by anyone here when I say this,” Arthur said, looking around. Seeing nods, he pressed on, “In James' place, I would have done the same thing and tried that spell. As high as emotions had to be, I may have easily made a mistake as well. I'm sorry, if you're not a parent, you don't understand what you would do to protect your kids. Mistakes happen, Severus. He did the only thing he could think of to protect his son. I don't blame him a bit. I very much doubt he would have wanted to sentence Harry to something like this or it was his intent. He did what he set out to do; Harry is protected by two people that will defend him against anything. That was his reason, not to throw a spanner into the war.”“He's right,” Albus nodded. “James—I understand why he tried this. And it should have worked.”“Any idea what could have gone wrong?” Minerva asked, looking at Albus.Blowing out a breath, Albus shook his head. “My guess? It's just how Remus said; it was his intent. Combine that with the emotions that had to be high with what was going on and he made a mistake. It happens. In this case, it was a grievous one. Whatever mistakes he made, he's paid for. We just have to deal with the consequences of what's going on, nothing more.” Looking at Severus, he said, quietly, “We've all made mistakes in this war and the last one. All we can do is move on from there. That's what they're doing and need to be left alone to work with what they have to deal with. That we'll grant them. Insisting that they throw themselves back in won't help anything. I doubt Sirius or Harry, either one, are in any shape to help with anything. In fact, they may make matters worse because of some of what they are dealing with.” Looking around, he added, tone quiet but with a very firm bent to it, “Keep in mind they were dead. There are very few documented cases of anyone coming back after the amount of time they were gone. Not without something very dark done to aid it. Pushing them may unleash something we don't want to deal with and will be just as bad as doing so to the other side of this. Also, fair warning, they may have knowledge of things they have no way of knowing. Even ones that are revived after a short time seem to have that. The death-pacts mentioned always seemed to have that as a side-effect. Pushing the two before they can fully handle this bond can result in many things no one would want revealed.”Knowing what Albus was referring to when it came to himself, Severus gave a curt, “Understood,” then pressed on. “They should have said something, or Lupin should have after that battle.”“I agree with what Remus said in that memory,” Minerva added quietly, hands firmly clasped in front of her, looking down. “On one level, all of us would have understood. When the sexual part came in, despite understanding, it would have unleashed more problems than we knew what to deal with. Especially in some. I'm not sure how understanding a few people would have been.”“Molly wouldn't have been,” Arthur said with a shake of her head. “She's a mother with a son that same age. And has a daughter just a year younger. That would have taken over despite the knowledge. Others would have reacted the same way. Then, if Remus had come to me saying they would come back, I wouldn't have believed him, especially since he had no proof. I think I would have chalked it up to grief and ignored it.”“They did what they could and what they thought was for the best. I don't think we need to second guess that now,” Albus told everyone, looking around. “Even if they had, there was nothing we could have done or changed. It was already solidifying to the point that it would happen. Then if it leaked out, we would have had more problems. Especially with what was going on with Cornelius and the Ministry.”“That's not something I thought of either,” Arthur sighed, shaking his head. “I can't even begin to fathom having to deal with this alone and hide it.”“Nor can I,” Albus told him with a shake of his head. Pulling the memory out of the Pensieve, he handed it back then said, gently, “Go home, Arthur. We'll take it from here. I'll get with you in a couple of days, before you go back, to cover any questions I have or what they need to know.” Seeing the man nod after taking the memory, he waited for him to leave then leaned back, twiddling his thumbs. “This—we need to leave it alone, Severus. I understand why you want their help. We all do, frankly, but you saw that memory. Harry isn't what he used to be now. From what we all saw, he was very quiet and didn't even look at Arthur, only saying hello. If you irk Harry or make him uncomfortable, you're going to set Sirius off. With the shape he has to be in at the moment, that won't be good. Couple that with past history and it could very well end badly. No, we need them to be left alone.”Taking that for what it was, Severus nodded, though looked dour. He didn't like this, that's for damned sure, but would deal accordingly.“While I have both of you here, we have a problem that needs addressed, now. The term is almost over, but it's still a very big issue that we need to deal with,” Minerva said firmly, looking between the two.“What's that?” Albus asked, looking in her direction.“Mr. Malfoy, again,” she sighed. “I issued him detention with Filch yet again just before coming up here, deducting enough points that Slytherin now has no chance at the cup. I'm sorry, but I was left with no other choice in the matter. Once more, he was at it with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named being back, making covert threats as to what might happen to some because of it and the same nonsense he's been spouting all year. Then he started on Miss Weasley, calling Mr. Potter a coward that was hiding because he's afraid to face this. It was obvious that it was done to do nothing more than cause a fight with those in my house, as he made the comments right in front of most of those that were close to Harry. It has to stop, even for the few days before the term is finally over.”Looking old, Albus glanced down and shook his head. “Until young Mr. Malfoy learns the realism of what Tom is like, there is very little we can do to put an end to this.” Glancing at Severus, he asked, “Is there any more you can think to do with him? We've tried everything I can come up with to this point.”“No,” Severus said, a sour look on his face. Leaning back and crossing his arms over his chest, he sneered, “I've tried everything, including issuing detentions myself and talking to him, but he won't back off. Lucius, though in disfavor for not getting that prophecy, is still firmly in that camp and high-ranking. Draco—he has no idea what he's doing and what it's like. All he sees is the fear and power he gets over what his father is. Nothing more. I truly fear what's going to happen if he crosses a line with the wrong person.” Shaking his head, he imparted, “I actually overheard him bragging about planning to take the Dark Mark over the summer. There is nothing I can do here to put an end to this. I don't think any of us can. Until he gets his first real feel for what it's like to be in service to that maniac, he's not going to back off. And, when he does, it may well be too late to help him.”Starting to fumble in his desk, Albus pulled out the list of infractions Draco had committed over the year and shook his head, sighing. “I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, Severus, you told him the next time he was caught doing this he would lose his Prefect badge and be thrown off the Quidditch team?”“I did,” Severus said. “It's all I had left and it didn't help. On his end, I think he considers it a bluff, that he thinks we won't do it because of his father and the Dark Lord.”Nodding slowly, stroking his beard, Albus picked up a quill and scribbled some notes. “It's not. While we might not be able to do much for the rest of the term, this will affect the next one. His badge is revoked and he's banned from playing Quidditch for the rest of his school days.” Tossing it down on the desk, he leaned back with a sigh. “I don't think it'll help much, but it's something. And Lucius can't appeal it as we have a detailed list of infractions that more than warrant a step beyond detentions, as we've done that and nothing's changed.”Looking at the paper, Severus nodded slowly, “I agree. It has to stop. I don't hold out hope it'll do more than anger him, thus him taking it out on everyone around him. Let me see what I can do to work with this. I'll talk to him when I finish here. Some in my house, like Zabini, have backed away from him over this. They know how bad this is and want no part of it. I had hoped them doing that would influence Draco. It hasn't. Parkinson, Crabbe and Goyle, all three, are right there with him. Others—not so much anymore. Let me see what I can manage, but don't count on anything but anger. I'm going to add, because of the point deduction, that's he's confined to dorms until closing feast, other than meal times. And he will be escorted to the Great Hall by me. That should stop the worst of this. At least outside our house. I would also suggest that the Aurors that are assigned to ride the train back with the students keep a close watch on him. This step is going to provoke. When provoked, Draco lashes out. I expect it to come.”“I'll make sure they keep a close eye on him,” Albus assured him. “Alright, anything else with that end, bring it to me. I'll see what other steps I can take if it keeps up. If not, we'll just have to wait until next year. If there's nothing else, I'll handle what Arthur left me and see what I can find that might help the situation.” Seeing nods from the other two, he dismissed them then stood to go to his personal library. He hoped that he could find something for the three men that would help ease the transition. Along with that, he made a mental note to get with Severus about the Wolfsbane. Remus would need that if he had to be close to the other two. That was something they could do. Also, that he had to bring this up to certain Order members so that they knew what they were dealing with. Molly—he would let Arthur handle that end. However, he was going to have to deal with the younger set at some point. It might be best to do that before school ended for the term. He didn't want them accidentally opening Pandora’s box. Something such as that wouldn't help anything.
Tossing the letter from Hermione on the table after he finished reading it, Harry put his head in his hands and shook it. “I can't answer these. I just can't right now. They want something I'm not willing to give up and I just can't deal with so much of what's there.”
Holding Harry close, Sirius picked up Hermione's letter and skimmed it. Sighing when he finished, he tossed it on the table and held Harry tightly. He could feel how distressed his godson was over what was in it. The others laid out probably didn't help matters at all. Stroking Harry's head, he looked at Remus and said, “I think you need to answer those. Just—something that it'll be a while before Harry can do it. I don't know. You probably know better than me what to say. Hermione—we know what she's like and how she pushes. She's already doing that. We don’t need that at this point in the party.”Picking up the letter, Remus read it quickly then sighed and nodded, “I'll handle it. I'll also make sure to bring it up to Arthur next time he comes over. I understand why they want to write, but some of this needs left alone for now. And some of what she wants information on we won't ever give up. No, this is something Arthur needs to take on. Or Albus, one of the two.” Putting the letter down, Remus looked at Harry then asked, tone gentle, “Would you like me to read them first from now on to see if there's anything in them that might bother you? That way you get fair warning before seeing it.”“Yeah, gonna let you do that,” Harry nodded. “Look, I get that's the way she always is. She's always demanding and wanting answers. I was used to it. Being away from dealing with it all the time for a year makes it a little hard to take. Not to mention the undertone of it. I just can't right now. It's setting off all kinds of things on my end that I don't want to deal with.” Looking at the small pile of letters, he spied the one in Ginny's flowery handwriting then added, shaking his head, “And Ginny—that needs to stop. I get there is a crush there still, but—no! It has to end. That I can't take. She didn't out and out say anything, but it's there.”“It does, now,” Sirius said firmly, glowering at the letter from the youngest Weasley. “Ginny isn't a threat, I get that. And there's not a damned thing she can do about what happened. She can't change it either, despite how much she might want to, but I don't need this shite right now.” Looking at Remus, he added, “And, though you might be handling it fine now, if it continues, you won’t either. Especially when we start going back around everyone.”“And I'll take that one, too,” Remus said with a firm nod, knowing what Sirius said was true. “I'll get with Arthur on it and make it clear. I'm not even sure he or Molly know that the crush is there. For all I know, they might see it as hero-worship. That's how we did until Harry explained it to us. No, in this case she needs to stop and that needs made clear to her.”“Is there any way to get someone else to explain what's going on to them? Like Mr. Weasley? He might be good at getting it across. I can't do this and I don't even want to try. Hermione won't back off, we know that, not with what she's like. Whatever information she gets, she's going to start looking stuff up. I don't want bombarded with questions on this mess. It's hard enough as it is.” Harry said, looking between the two.“I'll compose something to Arthur today and send it off. With it, I'll include copies of the letters and make it clear I'll be answering until you think you can handle it. I don't want them feeling you're cutting them out, and will make that clear, but you need to be in a better place before you can handle some of this the way you used to.” Remus said, putting his hand on Harry's leg and rubbing it. “I'll also make it clear that someone needs to explain the basics to them.” Tone hardening slightly, he sighed then said, “And see if someone can put a leash on Hermione. I don't think there's a possibility she can come up with exactly what we did, but I don't want to take that chance either. With her, it's entirely possible.”“Make it clear that if she or Ginny persist, they will deal with me,” Sirius said, reaching up to rub his eyes. “Right now? That's not a real wise idea. I'm not handling some of this well at the moment and it's going to take time to deal with it. I don't need either of those two pushing it. Sure, I get they are no threat to this and won't succeed, no matter what they do, but that's not going to override what's going on here.”“And I'll make that clear as well,” Remus told him firmly. Picking up Ginny's letter, he read it and shook his head. Tossing it aside, he said, quietly, folding his hands on the table, “That's bothering me, so it needs to stop. I'll make sure to impart that as well. Let's see what Arthur can do.”Looking down at Harry, giving him a squeeze, Sirius asked, “How did you handle Arthur being here? You didn't say anything, that's why I'm asking. I know what I felt through the bond, but I want to hear it.”“It was uncomfortable,” Harry sighed, shifting around a little, shaking his head. “I mean, I haven't really talked to him much in the past, alone anyway. Most of our interaction has been with others around. I just—I didn't know what to do or say as I was confused about what I could. That and him even being around made me twitchy. I thought it best just to say nothing and deal with it. It'll get easier as time goes on, I get that, but right now it's not.” Quietly, he added, “I just wanted to leave, mostly, but stuck it out.”“It's best if you don't run away from it,” Remus schooled softly, leaning against Harry and wrapping an arm around him. “It'll get easier as you figure out we aren't going to say anything to you and want you to be yourself. That's just going to take time. You'll manage.”“It wasn't much better on my end, Harry,” Sirius admitted with a sigh. “The impulse to prove you're mine was pretty high. We'll deal with it as it comes along.” Looking at Remus, he said, “It's probably best not to have him over more than twice a week for a short time for the first two or three weeks. At least until both of us can get it together more.”“That's fine,” Remus soothed, waving a dismissive hand. “I expected issues and will work with it. We can even do what you did today and have me start while you both nap or get ready. That might ease you into the interaction.”“Yeah, that's a good idea.” Sirius admitted with a nod. Looking at his friend, he asked, “The Wolfsbane? You're starting to take it tonight? You have something set up for it?”
“I am and I do,” Remus nodded. “It's nothing to worry about, Sirius. One of the elves will handle picking it up. I am going through a small place that isn't in Diagon Alley. Not only are they one that does high-quality work, but they are discreet. I set up an account with them for this not long after the mess happened. It'll be fine.”
“Alright,” Sirius sighed. “Good. I don't think there's going to be a problem, not with the bond, but if it makes you feel better, we'll keep doing it.”“It's not you I'm worried about, Sirius,” Remus admitted, looking down. “It's Harry. Padfoot is more than capable of keeping Moony in line. Harry doesn't have that option. I'm also not sure what the bond will pull for when it comes to this part. It's better safe than sorry.”“Yeah, I get that,” Sirius agreed. However, he began to grin a little and nudged Harry, who was as well. “We'll work with it, don't worry. Then we go from there after that.” Reaching up and rubbing his eyes then smoothing down his goatee, he sighed, “I need a break. Arthur being around and this mess wore me out. I just want a nap.”
“You'll probably be tired for the next week or so as you get used to being back,” Remus told him gently. “It's nothing to worry about. I think we could all do with a rest. It's been stressful. Sleep as much as both of you feel you need to. I'll handle what I can while you do and join you when not busy.” Giving Harry another squeeze, he stood then said, smiling slightly, “Besides, the bedroom always leads to more pleasurable things than just sleeping.”Grinning and chuckling, Sirius shook his head and said, helping Harry stand, “Why did I know that was coming?”“Because he wouldn't be him if he didn't say it,” Harry snickered, following Remus out.“Very true,” Sirius conceded with a nod.
