Chapter 6
After kissing his aunt on the cheek, PJ put his rucksack down by the chair and took a seat right next to her. Pulling his wand, making sure it stayed under the table, he glanced around the small outdoor seating area and cast a muffling charm. Oh, they were far enough away from Little Whinging that no one would recognize her, but he wanted to make sure and for their conversation to stay private. When that was done, he leaned back and looked at her, grinning. It had been over a year since he had seen her last and even that time hadn't been for long. This was good. “You're still beautiful, Aunt Toonie,” he said, grinning at her.
Smiling at her nephew, Petunia reached over and rubbed his cheek then said, “Thank you. And I think you get more handsome every time I see you!”
Grinning a little sheepishly, he shrugged. There was plenty to cover with her, but he wanted to talk to her for a while first. He was also damned sure that she had plenty of questions for him too.
Making some small talk with her nephew while he ordered a snack and something to drink, Petunia sipped her drink. When his food was delivered, she crossed her legs, smoothed down her dress then sighed and asked, launching right in to what she wanted to know, “Are you sure about staying, PJ? You said you're staying with your godfather and that his home is the headquarters of that Order thing. Isn't that putting you in danger of being exposed and drawn back in?”
Sighing, PJ told her, “I'm fine. Sirius and Remus are making damned sure that no one knows who I am. Even they didn't recognize me without the glamour and with my true eye color. I'm keeping both in place, of course, so I should be fine. So far, no one's looked at me off, even those I was friends with.”
“How are you explaining your presence?” She asked, curious.
Grinning, shoulders shaking, chuckling softly, PJ explained the ruse. “It's working. That's all that matters. We'll go with it. Remus is backing us up and telling the truth; that both of them have known me a long time. It's something we'll manage.”
Smiling at that, she nodded. Sighing softly, she said, tone firm, “I'm not sure about this, PJ. I don't want you in the middle of the mess going on. Why didn't you just ask Sirius to move with you? If he wanted to protect you, that would have been an easy way to do it and you wouldn't be in danger of being exposed.”
“He wouldn't have,” PJ told her softly. “He's made that clear in his letters to me. With what the last war cost him, he wants to see this one finished and plans to help. I asked him more than once to get out. He won't. Part of it, I think, is he wants revenge for what happened to mum and dad. Then what happened to him. It wasn't something I was going to bother asking because I knew the answer. Plus, if he did, he was someone plenty could easily trace. That would have left a trail I didn't want and would draw suspicion.”
“This—it's dangerous,” she told him firmly. “You can handle yourself and have been able to for a long time, that I know.” Giving him a short glare, she said, “That--'adventure' you had in North Korea proved that!”
Grinning sheepishly, PJ told her, “Yeah, I can. Keep in mind, I wasn't alone when I went to North Korea. Du Bois and I had each other's backs.”
“Still!” She huffed, glare firmer. “You were still at Bruxaria when you did that! And it was dangerous!”
“It was, I admit it,” he told her, still grinning. “It did a lot of good though. We managed. And, yeah, I can take care of myself, no doubt.” Looking down and thinking it over, he sighed then admitted, “Sirius was right about this mess, Aunt Toonie. I need someone to watch my back. For a while I'd be fine on my own. Dumbledore isn't the problem as he would just try to talk or manipulate me into coming back. The worst he would do would be expose who I was. It's the other side that's the problem. They want me dead, period. I don't think I really thought about it when I did that article, but if the other side does find me, I need more than just myself to stay safe. As I'm a loner, there wouldn't be any way for me to get help. I'm sure that my plan would work to hide me, but with me slipping back in the country, the chance is there. Or even for me to end up drawn in and taken after because of what I do. That end doesn't give a damn who they go after. And if it ends up exposed that I'm a reporter covering this mess, I'm a target. Which means, despite what my ego might profess, I need someone to watch my back. Sirius and Remus are perfect for that. They are damned good.”
Taking that in, gazing down into her drink, she sighed and nodded. “I understand and you're probably right. It's just that I didn't think you'd let him talk you into staying and was wondering how he managed.”
“It's complicated,” PJ admitted, looking at the table. Shaking his head, he continued, “There are only two people in this world that could talk me into something like this. You're one. If you asked, I wouldn't have even thought about it before I said yes. He's the other. Though it took him a bit longer. Everyone else? They could kiss my backside.” Shrugging, he finally said, “We all have our weaknesses when it comes to people. Both of you are mine. I just don't let anyone close anymore, for obvious reasons, so it's hard to say no to the two that are.”
Reaching over and brushing a wayward lock of his ebony hair off his forehead, Petunia smiled at him, something that was almost sad. “I didn't think of that either,” she admitted. “Something I keep forgetting is that you're so alone in this world. That wasn't my intent when I sent you away. I didn't think how I might be sentencing you to being alone because of what you have to hide.”
“Don't,” PJ told her firmly. “You didn't. It's my choice. I'm not ready to settle down with anyone yet. There's too much I still want to do that I'm not even thinking about finding someone. I'm content to do what I am if I want company. Besides, with how I am, I doubt many could tolerate being with me as they wouldn't get the attention they wanted, let alone having me around. I like what I do, Aunt Toonie. In fact, I love it. It's going to be a long time before I think about slowing down. You gave me a wonderful life, one I love. That's all. Nothing more.”
“I worry about you and that you're lonely,” she admitted, though was smiling a little bigger at what he said.
“There is nothing to worry about,” he told her firmly, reaching over and taking her hand, giving it a squeeze. “I'm not lonely. This is what I want to do and it's more than enough. When the time comes I meet someone special, things will change. I'll worry about that part when it comes.”
Squeezing his hand back, she told him, softly, “I'm so proud of you. You—well, it wasn't easy, I know. Sending you away to where you were alone all the time without people around you knew was hard. You managed and built a wonderful life. Then you graduated second in your class, both times, before moving on.” Gazing at him, she smiled again then said, “You're what I wanted Dudley to become. He does fine, especially now at uni because he's away from home and can't get what he demands, but nothing like you did because you had challenges he didn't.”
“And I thank you for it,” PJ told her, leaning over and giving her a kiss on the cheek. Seeing her flush slightly, he leaned back and changed topics, “Right. I found you somewhere to go that's perfectly safe. So, you have about a week to get ready.” Shooting her a look, eyebrow arched, he said, though knowing it wasn't a problem, “And no changing your mind. You need to be away from Uncle Vernon.”
“I won't,” she told him firmly. “Can I ask where?”
“You're going to the house I bought in Switzerland. Right on the shore of Lake Geneva. You'll love it! It's beautiful. And you won't look out of place.” He told her with a grin. Reaching down, he fumbled in his rucksack and pulled out what looked like an empty purse. “That's the bag I told you about. Just put everything in that. It'll fit, I promise. Don't forget anything because there is no coming back. The papers are all signed and my solicitor has a vault set up for you in the same bank I'm using. You'll have plenty of money to get you started.”
Taking the bag in a slightly trembling hand, Petunia nodded. This was a huge step. Yes, she wanted away from Vernon and knew she had to because of how bad it was getting, but it was unnerving to start all over. “Understood,” she told her nephew. “I'll start tonight. How long do I have before we go?”
“About a week. No more than that. The final papers are going through now. It'll take about that long to get what you need. Just don't forget your important papers. Once you're in Switzerland, the solicitor we have for you will start divorce proceedings, through our courts. That way Vernon can't do much. They're also setting up a post box like mine so you can write to Dudley. No one can trace you that way.”
Nodding slowly, she put the bag in her lap and let out a shaky breath. “This will be hard.”
“It will,” he told her softly, sliding closer then wrapping an arm around her shoulders. Pulling her to him, he gave her a kiss on the cheek. “It's the right thing to do, Aunt Toonie. You've put up with enough from him. Think of it as keeping me from going and hexing him into oblivion, because that's what I want to do. You gave me a new life, so I'm returning the favor. There is plenty there in the Magical part you can do. Or you can raise owls like we talked about. That would give you a good, steady income.”
Taking PJ's hand and clutching it tightly, she gave it a squeeze. “I'll find something to do, don't worry,” she said, voice taking on a more determined tone. “The night I leave--” she trailed off, looking at him.
“I'll be there, I swear,” he told her. “I won't let you go without saying goodbye. And I'll come visit. It's not that far away, so I can do it easily. One of my thoughts was sending you to the States, but I thought that might be too much of a culture shock for you. This is perfect.”
“I can do this,” she told him, lifting her chin, looking determined.
“You can and will love it,” he assured her, holding her close. “Now,” he started, changing topics so that she didn't get any more uptight, “how is Dudley doing? You said he is studying computer tech.”
“He's not doing bad,” Petunia told him with a smile. “Not at the top of his class, of course, but not bad.” She would adjust to this and wouldn't back out. All there was to it.
Sitting in the Order meeting that was close to ending, Sirius was waiting for PJ to come back. Albus wanted to meet him, of course, since he hadn't yet. That was understandable. Another part, though, was he was worried about his godson. Oh, yeah, PJ could take care of himself, he knew that, plus he was only going to be in Muggle areas. That didn't mean he wasn't concerned though. This was the first time PJ had gone anywhere on his own since moving in. So, he was uptight, imagining all the bad things that could happen to him as no one was with him. He shouldn't be concerned as his godson had spent years doing this on his own, but he was.
Part of that, he was sure, was that PJ was going to meet his aunt. Of all the risky things he could do, that was the biggest. His aunt was a direct link to who he was and someone might be able to figure that out. No, PJ didn't look at all like he used to and wore a glamour, but it was still a big risk. In fact, he wanted to go with him, but this meeting was huge. Then there was the fact that, as PJ pointed out, if he went along it would really look suspicious. Yeah, PJ was right there, that's for damned sure. It didn't mean he wasn't worried still, though. He wouldn't stop until his godson returned safely.
After the meeting with his aunt, PJ was going to the gym close by. That he felt better about as it was a busy place with no one apt to look at him oddly. It was still just the idea of him being alone. At this point, he was considering joining the gym just so they could go together. That was a bad idea though. The mere thought of PJ working out, not to mention how good he looked, was an issue. The idea of seeing him actually doing that was probably a very bad idea and would invoke plenty more things he really didn't need to deal with! No, he just needed to relax on the topic and trust that PJ knew what he was doing then head this way if something looked off. He supposed he would mellow out more as time went on. It was just hard now was all.
Honing back in on the conversation as there were a few things being said he needed to know about, Sirius was then distracted by hearing Poe do his thing with the talking. Grinning a bit, relieved, knowing that meant PJ was back, he saw Albus look at him. Standing, he said, “Give me a minute. Poe doing that means PJ is back.”
“That bird is a lunatic,” Severus snorted, folding his arms over his chest and looking dour, sure what was coming.
“He's fun though,” Sirius chuckled.
“Bring him in so we can meet him,” Albus told Sirius, smiling. He had heard plenty about the man, and all of it was good, other than what Severus had to say. That was expected, though.
“I will. Just—he's made it clear he wants nothing to do with the Order,” Sirius told the old man firmly, knowing Albus tried to recruit as many to the cause as he could.
“Just so we can meet him,” Albus assured him.
“Give me a minute,” Sirius said, nodding then heading out of the kitchen.
The first look at PJ when he came in had Sirius groaning internally. He was in baggy Muggle sweats, nothing too bad there, it was the half shirt that showed off his toned abdomen that was the problem. That brought back plenty of visions of that one night romp. Oh, he did not need that. However, he pressed on.
Leading PJ to one of the small rooms, he put up a privacy ward then explained what was going on. Shaking his head when he finished, he said, “It's best you do, otherwise Albus is going to get suspicious. We don't need that.”
“Got it and will do,” PJ told him with a nod though not wanting to face the old man. That would definitely be a delicate dance. Sending his rucksack to their room, he was about to shoo Poe that way as well, but Sirius stopped him.
“Bring Poe along. That should be plenty distracting and stop some of it,” Sirius grinned, looking at the bird perched on PJ's shoulder. “We have popcorn. I bet he'd like some.”
Groaning, PJ said, “Oh, bloody hell! Not popcorn!”
“Why?” Sirius asked, starting to chuckle, figuring this would be good.
“Let's just say he needs his own bowl. When he starts on it, you'll understand why,” PJ moaned with a shake of his head.
“Oh, this should be good,” Sirius said, grinning bigger. He liked the bird and his antics, finding them hilarious. Guiding PJ towards the kitchen once he canceled the ward, he asked, “How did the meeting with T go?” They were going to use that initial as a code for Petunia so they could talk without people understanding or being suspicious about it.
“Good,” PJ nodded, petting the yammering Poe on the head. “She's nervous and all that, but determined. Other than that, we just played catch-up. It went fine with no one thinking anything odd.” Grinning, he added, “Other than some speculating that I'm her toy boy.”
“I bet that was funny,” Sirius laughed as he guided him along.
“It was and always is,” PJ snorted, shaking his head. “The last couple of years we've heard that from some around us when we meet. It's a riot.”
Opening the kitchen door, Sirius ushered PJ in then quickly made introductions to those that didn't know him. He gave an internal grin at the dour look on Snape's face. Albus stood and greeted him warmly with a handshake. After PJ took a seat by Remus, he sat by him, grinning at the look on Ginny's face as she ogled PJ in that shirt.
Reaching up to pet Poe, who was doing the whole rapping tapping thing as the bird looked around at everyone, he waited until Albus quit asking PJ about his books to say, “Alright, a bowl of popcorn for Poe.”
Groaning, shaking his head, PJ told him, “Make it a big bowl and get your shields ready.”
“This should be good,” Sirius grinned, conjuring a huge bowl and dumping some popcorn in it. Looking at Poe, he said, pointing to the bowl, “Popcorn, Poe.”
Immediately alert, beak clicking a couple of times, Poe puffed out his feathers then unfurled his wings. Giving a couple hearty caws, he shrieked, “Corn!” Then he dove off PJ's shoulder right into the bowl, like a swimmer would off a high dive. Immediately, he began to roll around in it doing the whole rapping tapping thing while eating some.
Watching the bird, Sirius laughed, “Yeah, he likes popcorn, doesn't he?”
“Too much,” PJ sighed, putting up a shield to keep the popcorn from hitting him as Poe rolled around in it, some of it flying out of the bowl.
“The bird is deranged,” Severus said, eying the bird bathing in the popcorn.
“He's a riot,” Sirius snickered, watching.
Chortling, Albus shook his head. “He is amusing! Hermione said he claimed you?”
“Oh yeah, I was the lucky one that got picked to be his keeper,” PJ sighed, watching the bird. “He's good at what he does and efficient, just demented.” Looking in her direction when Hermione said his name, he waited to see what she wanted.
“Can you sign these for me, please?” She asked, pushing his books over to him, smiling.
Grinning, PJ took them and conjured a quill then signed, pushing them back. He then laughed when Ron and Molly did the same as well. “Enjoy,” he said when he finished, passing them back.
“I will have to pick up your books and give them a read,” Albus told him with a smile. “Sirius said you have another coming out in a couple of weeks?” Seeing the man nod, he asked, “What's this one called?”
“Deadly Kiss,” PJ told him. “It's about Bela Kiss.” Before anyone could ask, he explained, “Bela Kiss was a Hungarian serial killer that just kinda' vanished during World War I. It's a complicated plot that's hard to explain.”
“Most interesting,” Albus told him with a firm nod.
Watching Poe hop out of the bowl after eating all the popcorn, feathers ruffled, dancing back and forth in front of it, PJ sighed and shook his head. “Was that good?”
Wings outstretched, Poe did a few hearty choruses of the rapping, tapping, nevermore thing before stopping cold. Wings still outstretched, he cocked his head to the side and looked at PJ then his gaze slid down to PJ's sweats. Still for a minute, he clicked his beak a couple of times before looking back to PJ's face. Beak clicking faster, he ruffled his feathers and let out a caw.
Grinning just a little, PJ said, “You just had popcorn, so you don't need anything else. If you keep eating, you're going to be a fat bird that can't fly. Then how will I get my mail?”
Feathers puffing out, Poe looking at him intently then shrieked, “Wawa skittletits!” Then he dove into PJ's lap and began to try to stick his head in the pocket of his sweatpants, tail feathers twitching madly.
Petting the raven's back, PJ grinned, “You had popcorn, you don't need anything else.”
Watching the bird root around, trying to yank something out of PJ's pocket, Sirius chuckled, “What in Merlin's name is he doing?”
“He wants what's in my pocket,” PJ grinned. “I picked a treat up for him while I was out.”
“What did he say?” Molly asked, face slightly red, not sure what the bird said exactly but it sounded plenty rude.
“It's supposed to be 'want Skittles',” PJ chuckled. “Nothing rude. I think he can say it right now, he's just gotten so many good reactions to saying it that way that he keeps doing it.”
“Oh, alright,” Molly said, relieved, understanding. “What are Skittles?”
“A Muggle fruit-flavored candy. Something like the every flavored beans though only fruit,” PJ explained.
Watching the bird poke his head up above the table and look around then go back to trying to get what was in PJ's pocket, Sirius snickered, “That is hilarious!”
“Yeah, well, it is, I admit it,” PJ chuckled, petting Poe. “He loves Skittles. I can't get them here, of course, but I picked up some jelly beans for him. They are about the same thing.” Chuckling harder, he said, “And he's been accused of sexual harassment for doing that.”
“How in the world did he get accused of that?” Albus asked, amused. So far, his impressions of PJ were good. He was just how everyone reported he was. Though Hermione hadn't gotten far tracing him, what she found was already backed up by what was said or everyone had seen. This was good and meant nothing was off. Coupled with how the man wasn't around for the meeting and Sirius assuring him that he wanted nothing to do with it, Albus thought things were just how they seemed. Besides, Sirius appeared happier since PJ moved in than he had ever seen him. That was a wonderful thing.
“I had just finished my final paper for school and sent it off to the Dean with Poe. Naturally, I was tired and went to sleep. Next thing I know, I get a call from the Dean's office. The Dean himself sounded like he was trying not to laugh. The poor undergrad working for him was a woman and Poe delivered it to her, like he was supposed to. However, she had a big bowl of Skittles on her desk. The reaction he had was similar to what you just saw, including the dork bird dance because she didn't get what he wanted, thinking he was making rude comments. When the Dean called, I could still hear Poe and explained what it was. The Dean about died laughing and the poor undergrad took the day off to have a few drinks after that,” PJ explained as Poe managed to get the package of jelly beans out of his pocket.
Waiting for Poe hop back on the table, PJ then took the package from him and tossed him one, grinning at the happy noises in the form of rapid-fire rapping and tapping from the bird.
“He is a riot,” Sirius grinned.
“Quite funny,” Albus admitted, stroking his beard as he watched the bird. Clearing his throat, he asked, “PJ, I know you don't want to aid the Order or join, however, I was wondering if we couldn't get your newspapers from you. When you've finished reading them, of course. Anything from the colonies probably has better and more complete news than we get.”
“That's fine,” PJ told him, as it wasn't a big deal. “They generally come in the afternoon. I'll pass them along to Sirius.”
“Very good,” Albus said with a pleased nod. “That would be most helpful. Thank you.”
Reaching out to pet Poe, Sirius' eyes lifted to Ginny, something that made him grin bigger. She couldn't seem to stop staring at PJ. That was funny as hell. Lifting an eyebrow when she glanced up and saw him look her way, he gave an internal chuckle at her flushing again then getting a disgruntled look on her face.
“Don't say it, Sirius,” Ginny huffed, crossing her arms over her chest, glaring at him.
“I didn't say a word,” Sirius told her, chuckling. “I was about to though!” While she didn't say anything to that, just glaring harder at him, it made Sirius chuckle again. It was a riot but told him he probably needed to keep an eye on her with PJ lest she try something there.
After the meeting finally broke up, Sirius headed to his room. PJ had left shortly after Albus asking about the papers then the rest of them wrapped up what they needed to cover. Now he wanted to spend some time with his godson.
Stepping in, Sirius groaned. PJ was in just a pair of shorts after taking a shower. Trying not to let his eyes crawl down that body, he gave himself yet another mental swat upside the head and a reminder that he shouldn't focus on something that never happened. Walking over, he flopped down in a chair by the window by where PJ was sitting. Summoning a beer, he took a swig then said, “I think we're good. Everyone, including Albus, seems to think you're nice. I imagine some will still be wary for a time, but I think that's the end of the worst of it.”
“Good,” PJ sighed, leaning back in his chair, sipping at his own beer. “Because the hectic bit with all the bodies coming around is bad. I want to be able to concentrate on not only the new book, but an article I have in mind.”
“Albus made it a point to tell everyone that this is my home and that you live here now, so we deserve some privacy. That was his way of saying to stop the bombardment. Definitely good. And he said he thought you were quite nice,” Sirius assured him.
Nodding, PJ sighed, “Perfect. Now to work on settling in. And getting used to London again. Then all the rest of the junk. That's not bad though.”
“We'll manage,” Sirius told him. “It'll just take time, nothing more.” Then he switched topics to asking about how it went with his aunt and the plans there. He knew that PJ was getting ready to move her, so he thought that was part of it. Other than that, he wanted to make sure nothing was off that might cause problems.
A.N.- The wawa skittletits bit was a challenge for me from some that follow me on FB to see if I couldn't include it somewhere in a fic. See? I did! :D
