Chapter 6: Strange Letters
Love. He doesn't know what love is. He never knew. What does it feel like? What does it taste like? How do you feel it? Do you touch it? Do you hold it? What is love?
It was late in the evening and Hermione Granger was studying with her study partner a Ravenclaw Michael Wilson. The both of them were at the top of their class and on the road to being Head Boy and Head Girl. They were really into their studying and notes, that they didn't see an owl come swooping in. Of course Madam Pince wasn't too happy but when she saw that the owl landed near Hermione she didn't say anything. The two students almost jumped out of their seats when the owl came and rested a letter near Hermione. Mike looked at her weird and Hermione was just as shocked. She read the address and her eyes widened. She's been waiting for this letter for months. She sent one but no word in four months now three months later here's a response.
"I'm sorry Michael but I have to go," she said as she quickly packed up her books and parchments and left the library in a hurry. She need a quiet place to read the letter. She couldn't go to the common room not while Harry and Ron were waiting for her. She decided to go to the Astronomy Tower so she could get some piece and quiet. Then she had to report to Snape. To be honest she didn't know why Snape asked her to write the letter in the first place. But she agreed and every time she went to his classroom she would shake her head no. She could some how see the disappointment in his face every time and she didn't know why. At least now she has a reason.
She finally found a spot to sit down and the owl hooted softly. With shaky fingers she opened the letter.
Dear H.G.,
I am sorry it took me so long to respond but I was in coma for four months and need to recover. I am now back to my normal self and back to training. I don't know how you got my information nor do I know you. But something in your words soothed me. I am currently on my way to another city. I haven't felt like I belonged anywhere and a friend of mine and I are going to find our place. We are going to fight for the good. But there's something inside of me that saying that I'm on the wrong side and I'm not sure what I am going to do.
You already know my name and I wish to know yours so I know who I am corresponding with. It would help me a great deal. I hope this letter finds you well and that you are safe. If someone told you to contact me then it would be a mentor of mine that is at your school. No he is not Dumbledore. May I please know your name so I may not call you by your initials. Let my mentor know that I am alive and well and will return home soon.
YoursDrew.
Hermione sighed and looked up at the starry night. She didn't know what to think about this "Drew." Snape just gave her an address and told her to write a letter as if to write an old friend so she did. Here's a response, finally after all this time. She couldn't wait she had to find Snape right away. She reread the letter again and for some reason she had a hint of a smile. She got up and started to make her way down until she got to the corridor. Dinner was way over so she went to the dungeons hoping to find him in his classroom. She came up to his classroom door and took a breath. She could hear people talking so she knocked first, the talking stopped and hurried footsteps came to the door. She took a step back when the door opened and she saw Snape, "Yes Miss Granger," he said slowly.
"He's responded sir," she said and she gave him the letter. He took and slowly opened the door for her to come in. She saw Lucius standing there. She tried to keep her temper in check after what he pulled in their second year she wasn't too happy with him. "Have you sent a letter back?" Snape asked and Hermione nodded towards the owl that was picking at the crackers on the table. Snape gave a small smile. He gave the letter back to her, "Go ahead and respond to him. Come back when he responds back," he told her and nodded for her to go. "Yes sir," she said and left with the owl following her. She sighed and started to make her way up to the Gryffindor common room and hopefully Harry her boyfriend and Ron her best friend wouldn't question her.
It didn't take long for the two guys to swarm her. She just rolled her eyes and ignored their questions. She loved them both dearly but she couldn't take much more of their over protectiveness. She needed to breathe. She told them that she was fine and made her way up to her room. Knowing that they couldn't follow her she went straight to her bed and she laid down and let out a long breathe. She sat up and got off her bed to get ready for bed.
Once she was all settled she pulled out a fresh piece of parchment and began to write back to Drew.
Dear Drew,
I am happy to hear that you are doing well. But I am sadden to hear that you had been in coma for four months! At least you are back on your feet and doing much better. To answer your question my name is Hermione. It is nice to meet you. Your mentor who I assume is Professor Snape.. He seems to be in good spirits knowing that you are alive and well. I am not sure why but I'm sure in time you will tell me.
I don't know why he wanted me to contact you in the first place. I am also shocked you have responded. I understand about not knowing where you belong. I'm having the same issue. Part of me wants to get out and the other part wants me to stay. There's this big war going on and I'm not sure which side I am on. Everyone loves my boyfriend because he's saved us time and time again but I'm not sure. My best friend is pretty much the side kick and I'm left on the side lines. One day I hope to escape and find my own way.
I'm sorry to ramble but I hope to hear from you soon Drew.
Yours,
Hermione
Hermione sealed up her letter and gave it to the owl and opened up her window and the owl took off. She looked out into the night. She couldn't wait for his response. She felt really excited about it and didn't know why. She closed her window and climbed into bed and slowly closed her eyes. Hoping to dream about days where everything would be okay.*******************************
At breakfast the next morning Hermione and Michael were sitting together working on their essays for Muggle Studies just as the morning post came. A letter dropped in front of Hermione and she gave a small smile. She opened up the letter and began to read.
Dear Hermione,
It's nice to finally put a name to the letters. Thank you for your kind words and writing me back so soon. It was unexpected to get a response back so soon. I am currently in my new city with my friend and we are fighting the good fight. I left my brother and my father figure behind. I needed to get away for a while. I also left my girlfriend behind in my last city. It was horrible how I left but I couldn't say there anymore.
Most nights I stay up and not sleep at all and I'm not sure why. I've tried everything but nothing seems to work. Every potion, every drink, and every spell. Nothing. I just want a good night's rest for once. I don't know why I'm telling you this to be honest. You're a complete stranger to me. I think it's nice to get all this out to some one new. I hope school is going well for you and I don't want to keep you from your studies. I hope one day to meet you in person.
Yours Drew.
Hermione smiled she couldn't wait to write him back. Her heart was racing and for the first time in a long time she couldn't wait for classes to end. All day she couldn't focus and she could concentrate. All she wanted to do was write Drew back that's it. Also she had to show Snape the letter. Since Potions was her last class she would give him the letter and let him read it. It was the agreement and it was going to stay that way. Snape would not read what she would write to Drew though. He wanted her to come up with her own words and hopefully help him see the light.Just as she planned she gave Snape the letter and he read it. He gave it back to her and nodded. She was about to walk out of the door until Snape stopped her, "Give him this potion it should help him sleep. If he needs anymore let me know." He gave her a vile of a pink sparkling potion and walked away. Hermione looked at it and nodded. Before she knew it she was in her room writing a letter.
Dear Drew,
I was surprised to hear from you so soon. I'm sorry that you haven't been sleeping. Snape gave me this potion to give to you. Hopefully you will be able to have a good night's rest. He also said that if you need more just let me know. I hope you're doing better. I don't mind you opening up to me at all. It's nice to open up to some one you don't know it helps because you can get the truth.
I'm trying to break up with Harry but I'm not sure how to. I feel as if we were matched but I don't feel the same as he does. I don't feel like I'm with the right person. It feels forced. Don't get me wrong I love Harry but not the way he loves me and I don't know how to tell him. Then there's Ron he would be put in the middle of this. I'm not sure how to handle it. The school year is almost over and I will go back to my Muggle life. To be honest I can't wait to get away from this for a little while and focus on me for a change. Anyway hope to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Hermione.
She sealed the letter and gave to the owl and watched it fly away. She wasn't sure how to feel about Drew but there was something there and she just wanted to find out. It would only be a matter of time for to realized just which side she belongs on.
