Chapter 6
Tossing the Prophet down on the table, Sirius gave a slow nod. Oh, there was plenty about the ongoing mess with the war ending, but there was a massive picture of him and Harry on the front page as well. It proclaimed his innocence and pardon, of course, but it also revealed their bonding. That was fine. He rightly didn't give a damn about that. Grinning just a bit, he then nudged Harry, who was seated at the table between his spread legs and snorted, “People all over the UK are probably shitting themselves over that bit of news right about now. And there's lots of howling over it, I bet.”
Glancing at the paper and the headline, Harry nodded, grinning himself. “Oh yes!”Picking up the message Kingsley sent him, Sirius sighed then said, stroking his goatee, “We have plenty to work on today, Harry. Well, while we continue with what we're doing on the top floor anyway. We've got about three days before we have to go out in public to attend the funerals, so we have to work on your facial expressions. It won't be for long, of course, and we can chalk anything odd up to grief, but we need to start.”“They're doing that on the Hogwarts grounds. And, thankfully, Kingsley has managed to make it to where only close friends, family and students are allowed to attend. It'll be huge anyway, with all that died there, so he's been able to shut it down to only those of us that get an invite. That's good, though. It will save us from a right mess attending several of them all over.” Pulling out a drawing, he showed it to Harry. “They're interring everyone, including centaurs, merpeople and all that died there together in a memorial garden type bit. The families will pick out the headstones and such, plus what is written on them, but they are doing only one funeral unless the families want a private one later on.”Taking the drawing, Harry nodded as he looked at it. “This sounds like the way to go, honestly. For all of them.” For the first time since coming back, he felt the pang of grief, remembering all those that he knew that were gone, including some that were very close. The sadness was there, of course, something he felt, but he was able to push it aside and focus elsewhere. Shaking his head as he saw the names of Remus, Tonks, Fred and so many he went to school with, he then sighed. “Can you arrange to send something, like flowers or whatever, from us for those we knew? Is there anything in there about that or how they want to take care of it? And, maybe, something to Andromeda and the Weasleys? Like a food basket or something? I don't know—I've not had to handle something like this before,” he said, quietly, setting the map down.“I can and will,” Sirius told him, a determined bent to his voice. “We will get them all something very nice, from both of us, and make sure there is something on their graves.” Holding Harry close after putting the letter down, he kissed his godson on the side of the head and smiled just a little. That was enough to tell him that the Harry he had always loved was still there, at least part of him. This part would take a backseat to the darkness that now ruled his godson's life, but it was there and that was more than enough for him.Giving him another squeeze, he picked the letter back up then explained, reading through the next part. “Though these are funerals, Kingsley wants to do the celebration part as well with this. Awards, like the Order of Merlin, are going to plenty, including you, during this time. He's explaining it to most that it's because that way they can be emblazoned on the headstones of those that receive them at the same time. I'm sure it's more to do with you. Which works wonderfully for what we need, Harry. He's holding off on most of the traditional speeches and such, explaining it as that this is more fitting, but that way we don't have to deal with it again.”“That works quite nicely,” Harry said with a nod as he glanced at the letter.“We'll probably have to deal with some odd bits afterwards, like with the Weasleys and Andromeda, but it won't be public, thankfully. That we can handle. It just means we have plenty to get in place the best we can to get us through it. Nothing more,” Sirius told him. “It's something we can handle without a problem. Just stick to me like there is a charm on the both of us and we'll get through it.”“I can and will,” Harry confirmed, leaning more heavily back against Sirius. “I just hope no one keeps trying to drag us back out to deal with whatever. That's something I don't want any part of.” And he didn't. He wanted left alone with Sirius, nothing more. In fact, he wasn't sure he could handle people trying to drag him into the middle of whatever. That would make him barmy and rightly piss him off. No, that he wouldn't let happen.“I'll make it clear we aren't doing that,” Sirius assured him. “Let me take on everything that comes in and we'll wiggle from there to keep everyone away. That and it won't seem odd with the bonding being new.” Sighing, he added, as he picked up Arthur's letter, “The only problem I see is Ron and Hermione. They aren't going to leave it alone. And, maybe, Ginny. Nothing I can't handle, though.” Stopping there, he quickly read through what Arthur wrote then groaned, “We might have to start that bit tomorrow.”Brow furrowed as he looked over the letter from Arthur, Harry shook his head then asked, “Any way to wiggle out of this one?” Though part of him wanted to see all of them, most of him just wanted left alone with Sirius, nothing else. So, he wasn't sure how to play this.“No and we really don't want to,” Sirius sighed. “They are family, Harry. I get that both of us want to end up as hermits, but they went through a lot with you. Most of all, they love you and see you as their child. We don't want to completely cut them out. I'm damned sure Arthur knows we'll be distancing ourselves, for obvious reasons, but he made it clear he wants us around. We should honor that. The timing isn't the best, that's for damned sure, as we don't have all we need in place, but we'll manage. They want us there for a reason. It's not only because we're family, something Arthur made clear, but they need the support. So many were lost, including one of their sons. And I'm sure plenty want to hear from you that this is what you chose and want. What happened was blindsiding and no one expected it. Despite Molly and Arthur explaining, I'm sure that they want to talk to you about it as well.”Now understanding, Harry nodded then told him, “We'll manage.”“We will. Let me take on most of it and we'll get through it just fine. Arthur's not likely to let Ron, Ginny or Hermione start too much. I'm sure the two of them are explaining what's in the paper to all of them this morning. That way we won't have to. Questions will come, I'm damned sure of that, but nothing we can't handle. Then we press on.”Thinking it over, Harry sighed then said, “We'll get through it.”“We will. It'll only be for a few hours at a time. That we can manage. Don't worry,” Sirius assured him.“Anything on the charges coming for some of the idiots?” Harry asked, changing topics, curious about that.Picking Kingsley's letter back up, Sirius skimmed it then shook his head. “Nothing so far. I'll reach out to him and see what's going on there. It's something I'm sure he wants in place, fast.”“I hope plenty get slapped, including all the Malfoys,” Harry snorted, sneering, that sheen, though covered by the contacts, back full force.Giving Harry a squeeze, knowing what that tone of voice meant, Sirius sighed then told him, “I'm sure he'll come up with something. Just give him time. Let's focus on what we have to work with here then worry about that bit later.” With that, he had to make sure to get Harry to explain what he was feeling when that tone came about and all he was dealing with so he could put something, somewhere, in place to help with this mess. That and make it clear to Arthur that until he could manage that, whatever interaction there was coming had to be short so no one ended up getting what was really going on. This afternoon, as they worked, he would press on with that part and see what he could manage.Sighing as he looked around the table, Sirius then said, “I think I need you to get Kreacher to take on sorting the mail starting today. I'm sure we're going to end up deluged by plenty of people. The ones we don't know or have never heard of, we'll have him get rid of them. The rest—we'll sort accordingly. This way we don't have to worry about all kinds of crap getting through we don't want to deal with or something dangerous. If we don't see it, we don't have to deal with whatever is there. What do you think?”“I'll set him to it,” Harry told his godfather with a nod, looking over his shoulder at him. “If we give him a list, he should be able to sort through what has to end up coming our way.”“We'll go about it that way,” Sirius agreed, relieved. “I'm sure that we'll start getting all kinds of shite this afternoon with what's in the paper. We also need him to check all of it for spells or anything dangerous, no matter who it comes from.”“I'll make sure he does,” Harry assured him. Brow furrowed, he thought it over then asked, “How bad do you think this will get, what with the bonding being announced? We can handle it, of course, but I'm curious.”“That I honestly don't know,” Sirius admitted with a sigh. “It's going to end up a right ruddy mess, that's for damned sure. The fact that I was dead for a couple of years then came back will start plenty howling about Dark Arts, Necromancy and everything else they can think of to throw my way. Kingsley might have announced my pardon, produced evidence, all of it, but plenty might not believe it. I'm damned sure some will end up spouting nonsense about you and the Imperious. Either that or something similar. It won't matter what Kingsley can say on the matter. We won't even get into the howling over the bonding. The mere fact that we're both men is going to set plenty off. Our ages will factor in as well. Then will come he fact of me being your godfather. No matter how we look at this, it's going to end up a bloody mess.” Giving Harry a squeeze, he said, “I'll take it on, don't worry. If I have to drag Kingsley in to put a halt to it, I will. Arthur can back up plenty. That'll help. Not to mention just who you are. For the most part, we're ignoring it. That should defuse most of it as we won't talk and are going to mingle as little as possible.”“Either that, or I can handle it,” Harry said, grinning wickedly, reaching down to finger his wand. For the most part, he was completely fed up with their world anyway, and so much of what went on, so it would be a pleasure to impart what he felt.“I'll take care of it,” Sirius told him in a firm, level tone. Holding Harry tightly with one arm, keeping him back against his chest, he then fingered the collar around his neck, giving it a slight tug. Softly, he then added, “Just calm down, Harry. Nothing to get upset about.”Nodding to let Sirius know he heard him, Harry took deep breaths, focusing on what Sirius was doing. Though he loved his godfather's touch, the fact remained that the darkness was there and he wanted to take a portion of this on to impart a lesson about so much. Considering what he went through over the years, it was a big one, too.Not feeling Harry calm down much, Sirius thought over what to do then decided to try what he did when Kingsley was over yesterday. Reaching down, he stroked Harry's cock while holding onto the collar. “Relax,” he soothed, hoping it wouldn't take a more overt show of the bond to get him there. That he didn't want to invoke unless he absolutely had to. It was probably coming when someone pushed Harry too far or wouldn't back off, but he wanted to calm matters another way with the smaller bits of this mess.Grinning slightly at the stroking of his cock through his jeans, Harry relaxed somewhat, focusing on the pleasurable sensations that it produced. Oh, he didn't get hard, nothing like that, but it felt great!“That works,” Sirius muttered softly then shook his head. “It's not something we can do around others, though.” Sighing, he tried to think what might help while still stroking Harry through his jeans. Giving him a kiss on the side of the head when he couldn't come up with something, pleased that he not only saw a more normal expression on his face, but that Harry was relaxed. Good. “We'll come up with something. Let's see what we can manage tomorrow. I don't want you blowing up on people. That would lead to questions that we don't want to answer yet and speculation we don't need out there.”Thinking that over, Harry nodded in understanding.“The calmer face you can show, the less we'll end up bugged. That's what we both want. So, we'll work on something to distract you once it starts. Just follow my lead, Harry, and we'll manage,” Sirius told him, letting loose of his crotch. Holding him close, he kissed him on the head again. “We'll come up with something for the next few days. Just give me some time.”“We'll figure out something,” Harry sighed, smiling and pressing back against his godfather.“We will,” Sirius nodded, pleased with this.
Sprawled out on the new bed that was delivered that morning, while taking a break from the warding they were doing, Harry took a sip of his butterbeer then reached out and ran his fingers through Sirius' hair. His godfather looked a tad younger than he had before going through the Veil. He supposed it was the lack of stress on the other side and the memories of the hell he went through becoming manageable. On the flip side, though, Sirius had more grey hair now than he had before going through the Veil. It wasn't a lot, of course, but some. Grinning, he reached down and stroked Sirius' goatee and chuckled, “You have more grey hair.”
Snorting, grinning himself, Sirius reached out and tousled Harry's inky hair then said, “You have a few yourself, actually. Not many, of course, but there are a few you can see. I think it's the whole death thing that brought it on for both of us. A side effect or something.”Still grinning, Harry shook his head. “At least it wasn't anything more than that. I can deal with a few grey hairs and you look hot either way.”Laughing, Sirius said, “Thanks! Very appreciated!” This was good, though. When alone and not stressed or discussing anything bothersome, Harry was doing fine. The expression wasn't what it used to be, but was slightly softer than what it was since this started. The downside, though, was there wasn't anything they could come up with that seemed like it could push Harry into being able to pull off the 'normal' expression he used to have, no matter how he tried, unless it was something he prodded. Which meant, until they could find something to work, whatever they had to do would come from his end and a prodding he would give. To manage and be more effective, though, he needed to understand what Harry was dealing with so he could judge what might work. Oh, he could get it there when it was overt, no doubt, he just didn't want it to get that far before he had to do something.Downing the last of his beer then vanishing the bottle, Sirius flopped on his back, hands behind his head, fingers laced. Crossing his ankles, he looked at Harry then said, “I need you to explain to me what this is like and what you're feeling. If you do that, I can better judge what we need to do to work with this or how we might be able to go about it that will be more effective.”“It feels amazing,” Harry told him with a lazy grin, not really sure how to describe it. “It's dark, no doubt there, but it's something that feels wonderful, like it—I don't know, something that was always there, but is now in control and guiding me in a way that it hadn't before. It's like I denied part of it was there. Now that it's unleashed, I feel wonderful. And I can see things in a way I hadn't been able to in the past.”While that was a description that gave Sirius part of it, it wasn't anything that could help him in dealing with this mess. “How about this—when it comes to like Ron and Hermione—you said you don't really want to deal with them anymore. Can you explain why and how what you're feeling affects that?” He thought if he went about it this way, he might get answers he could use. After thinking over what he was asked, Harry began to reply, slowly, not sure how to word it, “Ron and Hermione are still my best friends. It's just—I see it differently now. We all have flaws, I get that, but I see theirs more now. And even thinking about them is irritating. I'm not sure I can be around the two without them irritating me more. It's like—you know how sometimes the small things that you don't notice about people at first really grow to bug you?” Seeing Sirius nod, he pressed on, “It's like that. Those things that I used to just roll my eyes at are now at the forefront and make me want to strangle them even thinking about it. Like Ron's jealousy and Hermione being a know-it-all. Some of it's enough that I want to kick them for it, like Ron leaving us during the nightmare.”Taking that in, Sirius thought it over then asked, brow furrowed, “Can you remember the good parts too? Like all the stuff you used to do and how close you were?”“I remember it,” Harry confirmed with a nod. “It's just the other—it's there now and more prominent. I can't describe it better than that. And I just don't think I can handle being around them anymore, at least not for very long. I really don't. The same with so many others. Even thinking about some of it irks me to no end.”Now Sirius understood. The darkness had taken over to the point that Harry would focus on the 'bad' rather than seeing it as normal or being able to look at the upside of it. Which was truly sad when Sirius thought about it. The part of Harry, his forgiveness and kindness, was gone for most people now. Harry would always see the darkness in most, not the good, and question everything. He would probably be the only person ever again that would be let close. Dumbledore had 'killed', to an extent, part of Harry off, the part so many adored, in his foolish belief of thinking he knew everything. While it was still there for bits, the darkness in him overtook so much that most wouldn't see much of the old Harry and Harry would focus on that part whereas the good side he used to see in so much would end up shunted aside, something he wouldn't notice. Though he wasn't sure if it could help him in working with what he had to, he at least understood it now.Thinking it over, trying to meld that information with what had worked so far, he asked, “Explain what you feel when I’ve touched you to get it to stop. That might help.”“It feels good and it's you doing it,” Harry shrugged, grinning again.“It's distracting from whatever's going on then? Like when something is getting to you or setting you off?” Sirius asked, sure he could use this to deal with what was going on.“Yeah,” Harry admitted with a nod. “That darkness pretty much takes over with so much, other than anything to do with you. If you're doing something like stroking my cock through my pants, I can focus there instead of the darkness and what it wants.” That was the best way that Harry could describe what it was like. That darkness—unless you experienced it, there was no accurate way for him to get it across to Sirius what it was like and how it felt. And that Sirius could use! It meant he just had to figure out how. The bond they had created on the other side was enough to allow him to pull Harry back once he figured out what worked. That would take time, he knew that, but he could manage. Until then, though, he would come up with something to work with the situation temporarily. And he was damned sure it would play on the one thing that worked so far. He just wasn't sure how he would manage that and not be overt about it to where others could see. There was also the fact that he couldn't just vanish with Harry to get him under control. If they did that, people would get suspicious.Scratching his chin, thinking, he said, “While we wait for this layer of wards to settle, I've got a couple things I want you to help me look up. They'll be applied to the collar. Let's see what we can find.”“What kind of spells?” Harry asked warily, not sure what to think about that as the collar was something that set off the darkness, making it want to rebel.Sitting up and starting to summon some books, Sirius explained, tone distracted, “To see if I can't recreate what I've been using with you until we can come up with something else. It at least softens the expression. That should be enough that whatever else they see we can chalk up to grief.”Understanding, Harry was relieved. That at least was not something bad, and the darkness wasn't throwing a fit over it.Grabbing a book when it landed on the bed, Sirius began to leaf through it to see what he could find. While doing that, he asked, “Can you tell me a bit about some of the apprehension I've seen? I know the collar caused a ton of problems for you when I put it on. What was behind that? And is there more?” That he needed to know so he had some foreshadowing of what he was dealing with. The more knowledge he had about that, the easier it would be to work with.“It's a bit like a war, actually,” Harry sighed, turning on his side to face Sirius. Then he went on to describe what it was like.Taking in what Harry was saying while he looked up spells that might mimic what he wanted, Sirius nodded. The bond was working, that's for sure, because if it wasn't they would be at all out war over some of this. However, Sirius was equally sure that there was a blowup coming when he hit something that the darkness didn't like. That was fine, too. It was a fight he would win. All there was to it. The only thing he was worried about was how much of a fight was coming, nothing more.
