Chapter 6
Curled up on the settee, Harry had his legs tucked up in front of him, arms wrapped around his shins, and just looked at the mass of books there. He and Sirius had spent the last couple of hours going through them and the notes Voldemort gave over about this disaster. From his perspective, the more he read, the more panic seemed to well up and a sense of impending doom washed over him. Everything they came across, and he meant everything, said this wasn't breakable. That was enough to cause major anxiety attacks, honestly. They were good and stuck. Putting his chin on his knees, he sighed, not sure what to do. At the moment, Sirius was in the shower, so he was alone with his thoughts. Those were chaotic enough that he couldn't focus anywhere but on how bad this was. He didn't like that and knew he had to get it together to deal with the mess, he just couldn't manage it.
Sighing softly, he didn't know what to do to make this better. It was such a muddled mess that he didn't know where to start when it came to dealing with so much of it. Neither did Sirius, from what his godfather said. It was just—a nightmare. Another problem was they weren't coming up with much on what the bond could do. That didn't help. What they read talked about the bond it would create, but didn't say what they could expect from it. Even Voldemort said, when he came in to check on them, that he hadn't found much on that part. A right bloody mess.Head coming up when the door opened, Harry's brow furrowed when he didn't see Voldemort come in. However, he got it when he saw Nagini slithering across the floor. Stiffening up as he looked at the snake, he waited to see what she would do. The evil git had told them that he made it clear to his familiar that she wasn't to harm them, but that didn't mean much to Harry at this point and he was still wary of her.Watching her slither over then coil up a few feet from him, looking in his direction, he waited to see what she was going to do. When it seemed like all she was doing was sitting there looking at him, hissing softly, he said, tone wary as he wasn't sure what to make of this, “Hello, Nagini.”Hissing excitedly, the snake said, “Tom told me you could speak the language of the snakes. I like this! Someone else to talk to! You are Harry.”“Yes, I'm Harry,” he admitted with a nod.Uncoiling, Nagini slithered up onto the settee and perched on the arm of it. “Nothing to fear, Harry. I was told to harm neither of you nor your owl. As I gave Tom my word, I won't. All I want to do is talk. It's ever so nice to have someone besides Tom to do that with!”Though still wary, Harry said, “As long as you don't try to hurt or scare any of us, we can talk all you like.” With what he knew of the snake, he was unnerved by her, but could handle it as long as she didn't try anything like that.“No harm, you have my word,” Nagini assured him.“Just give us time to get used to you,” Harry told her. He was sure that Sirius would freak out slightly as he couldn't understand her, but he could help with that. As long as he could understand her, Sirius would be able to deal. “And, please, don't scare us. This is hard enough as it is that we don't need scared or to wake up with you in bed with us.”“I'll let you know when I'm around, Harry,” Nagini assured him, sliding over onto the cushion beside Harry. “No, I won't crawl into bed with you. Tom doesn't like me in his bed either, so I have my own. Tom said you live here now.”“We do,” Harry said with a sigh, slumping slightly. That—yeah, he was having a problem with that and admitting it aloud made it even worse.“Oh, that is good! It gives me someone to talk to! I do like that ever so much. Tom said you'll be allowed all over the house today. I can show you around when he does that,” the snake offered, pleased with having more people around that weren't Tom's followers and drove her nuts.“I think that's something we'll let you do,” Harry told her with a small smile. Hearing the door to the loo open, he looked up to see Sirius step out then heard him stammer, seeing his eyes go wide when he saw the snake there. Shaking his head, he told his godfather, “It's nothing to worry about. We're just talking. And she's promised not to hurt any of us.” Looking back at the snake, he added, “When we get out of the room, she's going to show us around the house, too.”Tongue flicking, Nagini watched as the one she was told was called Sirius walked over, giving a wide birth to the end of the settee she was on, then perch on the arm of it by Harry. “This is Sirius, right? Tom told me that was his name.”“Yes. He's my godfather,” Harry confirmed with a nod.“Tell him I said hello, please. And that no harm will come to him,” the snake imparted, watching the man. He was unnerved by her and a tad frightened from what she could tell. That she didn't want.Translating that to Sirius, leaning against him when he felt his hand on his shoulder, Harry added, “It's nothing to worry about. We're just talking.” This was good, though. If she would be pleasant with them, it was one less thing to worry about when it came to this whole nightmare.“Hello, Nagini,” Sirius said in a stilted voice, completely stiff. One thing he didn't need added to the already stressful situation was walking out of the loo and being confronted with the evil git's snake! That didn't help anything at this juncture of the 'fun'. However, as Harry appeared to have her calm and was just talking, he would let her do that. Especially if he could get reassurances about not being hurt. That would ease his mind on that front.Looking back at the snake, still leaning against the stiff Sirius, Harry began to ask questions about the house and what there was to do. He figured that was a neutral enough topic with her and wouldn't be touchy. It was just odd to talk to her because of what he knew of the snake. That and he made sure to translate the conversation to Sirius so his godfather knew what was said so he could relax as well.
“Nagini said she's the one that wants to show you around the house,” Tom said leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs. “I'll let her do that as she's rather enthused about the idea,” he added, looking slightly amused. His familiar was draped around his shoulders and he was stroking her head. She seemed so happy about the idea that he would let her give them the grand tour. At the moment, they were all in his study. He had the warding up he needed and the two couldn't go beyond the boundaries of the property or send out any kind of message he knew about, so it was safe. Looking at the two that were seated in front of his desk, with Sirius having a protective arm around Harry, he said, “You can wander at will around the property. The warding won't let you go beyond and only I control that so there is no taking it apart. I would just warn you about being cautious in the library. There are plenty of tomes in there that are dangerous.”
“We'll keep that in mind,” Sirius told him stiffly, glaring slightly and snarling internally about the wards. He would see what he could do, of course, but he was damned sure the evil arsehole did just what he said. Beyond that, though, he was happy to get out of that room. It was big enough, sure, but it was just the idea. One of the things he was going to try was to see if he couldn't figure out where in the name of Merlin's scraggly beard they were. It wouldn't help them much, but he wanted to know as one never knew when the opportunity to pass the information would present itself. Again, that was something he doubted would do any good, but he wanted to try. Albus might be better able to help with information on what they were facing than the evil git could get. That he wanted, badly. Because they needed to prepare for whatever it was.Pressing on, Tom said, sighing softly, “I've given up looking into that damned potion. All the information I've found says, roughly, the same thing. So, what I'm pressing on to is the bond itself. And, before you ask, I'm not finding much. I had to put out a few feelers to other people to see what they can find for me. What I do have when it comes to that is waiting for you in your room. It doesn't tell us much beyond what we already know and that this is unbreakable.”Groaning at that, head dropping back as he felt Harry slump, Sirius shook his head. He figured that, honestly, he just didn't want more confirmation that it was right. Sighing, he asked, “You finding anything at all we can use? Nothing in those books you sent had that end.”“Nothing,” Tom shook his head, sighing himself. “I passed you everything I had. It was my hope you might be able to see something I didn't, but it appears that's not the case. So, I'll do what I can to get my hands on more and use some contacts to see what they can manage for me if I can't find anything.”Snorting, Sirius told him, “We need something before we're all blindsided.”“An assessment I wholeheartedly agree with,” Tom admitted. Though this was good, and he knew the huge help it was to have these two in his hands, the fact that there was a bond there needed investigated so he knew what was coming. There was already the question about why he had given in to Sirius. That he wanted to understand so he didn't find whatever was going on growing worse with him not understanding why. “Just give me time.”“We have a shite-load of that,” Sirius grunted, shaking his head. He didn't like this, not at all, and the mere fact that he was sitting here having a civil conversation with the evil arsehole that caused so much hell was almost unfathomable to him. He had no choice, though. Not if he wanted to find some wiggle room in this nightmare. That he and Harry needed, desperately. And he had no way of finding it without the arsehole's help. That definitely stuck in his craw in a big way.A slightly smug smirk crossed Tom's face, yet he didn't say anything. No sense in poking the situation if he didn't have to. That wouldn't help anything and he knew it. Albus he would poke, repeatedly, but Sirius he would leave alone until he could figure out much of this mess. Changing topics, he said, “I'm getting information sometime today about just what in the name of Merlin's magically messed up maladies went on. I do know several bits by now. I've confirmed that the three we discussed were the ones involved. They have been arrested. Charges are still pending, of course. One source told me it's serious enough that they are looking at expulsion over it. The same source also imparted that the three are dropping out of Hogwarts to hold off that step.”“The rotten little shites are in for a world of hurt when I get my hands on them,” Sirius snarled, eyes flashing dangerously, as he straightened up. “So is Lucius for not putting a leash on that damned brat of his!” He knew it was Draco that was the mastermind behind this mess as the other two didn't have the brain power to come up with an original thought between them.“They will all pay. As will their parents,” Tom agreed, his own tone taking on a knife's edge. “From what I hear, time in Azkaban is coming. That's fine, let them enjoy the atmosphere there. I fully plan to impart our displeasure before they go.” And he did. All of them were going to hurt before he planned to ensure the Dementors focused on the three when they went. Before that, he intended to use his influence to make damned sure that Lucius could do nothing to negate the punishment for this crime. He had plenty of influence in the Ministry, more than Albus would ever know, including a few members in the prosecutor's office and on the Wizengamot. That he would use to make sure the three didn't get off with a wrist slap. Then he would start making Lucius pay for not teaching his bratty spawn to curb his impulses. He was even thinking of including Narcissa in the retribution. This mess was big enough and affected him for the rest of his life. For that, Draco was going to feel real pain for the first time, on many levels.Eying the evil git warily, Sirius didn't want to think what that tone meant. All he knew was that Draco and the rest were probably in for a world of suffering, something he probably didn't want to know about. Shaking his head, he asked, “Is there anything else?” He honestly didn't want the two of them in this arsehole's presence any more than they had to be there, so he wanted to finish up.“Nothing for now. If I find out anything related to this nightmare, I'll let you know,” Tom told him, leaving out that he had several meetings that day with people who could help and that he would be gone. He didn't want to the two knowing that, so he planned to keep it to himself and have the elves watch over them while he was not there. Until he could be absolutely sure that the two could go nowhere and do nothing about contacting anyone, he would have the elves monitor them and what they said. “Feel free to wander around inside and out to get to know the house.”“Oh yes, I need to show them around,” Nagini said, rather enthused by this, slithering off the now chuckling Tom. “Come, you two, follow me and I'll show you where everything is. You'll like the home, it's very large and comfortable.”Unable to help himself Harry grinned just a little at the snake's enthusiasm as she came over and curled up in front of them, tail twitching as she waited. “Alright, Nagini, show us around,” he said after translating for Sirius. Standing, he waited for his godfather. Honestly? He didn't want to stay around Voldemort more than he had to.After shooting the evil git a look, Sirius stood, planning to follow along. As the snake led them out, he asked, “She's not being all frightening about this?”“Not at all,” Harry chuckled as he followed, listening to Nagini. “She's being quite nice about it and seems happy to have someone else to talk to. Nothing more than that. Well, other than enthusiasm for this.”“Something I can handle then,” Sirius said, sticking close to his godson. While they walked along, he made sure to look around so he could memorize what was where. That could only help in the future.
Sitting outside at a small table, enjoying the cool autumn air and the breeze that ruffled the fallen leaves in the small area surrounded by statues of some kind, all of them strange looking to him, Harry watched what Sirius was doing. He assumed his godfather was trying to get readings on the wards and other bits that could help them. When Sirius lowered his wand and came over to flop in the chair beside him, picking up his beer and taking a drink, Harry asked, “Anything helpful?”“Other than the wards are probably as strong, if not more so, than the ones on Hogwarts? Nothing,” Sirius groused, slouching and crossing his arms over his chest. Shaking his head, he added, “I doubt even the Wardmasters in the Ministry could take these apart. No chance of me doing anything or getting any kind of message out beyond the Patronus. And I'm not willing to chance that one again. Hell, I'm not even sure it got through. No point, honestly.” Sighing, he said, “No clue where we are either. My best guess, because of what we see, is in the south of England. Even that I can't be sure of.”“At least you tried,” Harry told him softly then took a sip of his butterbeer. “I didn't figure it would pan out.”“I didn't either,” Sirius admitted. “Which means we just have to wait for something that might work to get a message out or see what we can wiggle.”“I'm not counting on that,” Harry told him softly, leaning back and crossing his ankles.“Neither am I,” Sirius groused. Groaning, head dropping back, he said, “Even if we could get a message out, it's not going to do a damned bit of good. Whatever that fucking brat did has probably made it to where we can't be away from the evil son of a bitch. Anyone knowing where we are won't do a damned bit of good either. Those wards won't even let them see the place, let alone do anything. My only hope in getting anything out or a message in is so that someone, somewhere, can figure out what the hell we can expect with this nightmare and we don't just get smacked with something we don't expect. There's no way to help us get out of here.”“I was afraid of that,” Harry sighed. Looking out over the garden type thing surrounding them, he just shook his head, not sure what to make of this. “This is bad,” he finally said softly. “Really bad.”“No arguments there,” Sirius told him, reaching out to put a hand on the back of his godson's head. What he didn't add was he thought that it would just get worse as time went on. With what he knew of most bonds, what already happened probably wasn't all that was coming. What else might be approaching wasn't something he knew, but he was damned sure that none of them would like it. He also didn't want to think about what might come if this war continued on the way it was. It wasn't full out battling yet, like it had been during the last one, but that was coming. If he and Harry were stuck in the nightmare they were in, not only would they be drawn into the middle, but he was damned sure the evil arse would use it to his advantage. That he didn't know what to think about. He also didn't want to think what the shitehead would use them for, even covertly. So far, he hadn't tried to get anything out of them about what they knew, but he was sure that was coming. And he wasn't certain if they would give it up because of the bond. Snape being a spy alone was huge. That he didn't want out there because it gave Albus a huge advantage that side needed. He would just have to wait and see, then hope like hell the two of them could do something to keep that from the arse.Shaking his head, trying to pull himself out of that line of thinking, vowing to not worry about it until he had to, Sirius told Harry, “I'm with you, so you know you're protected. We'll manage to handle whatever is tossed our way, don't worry. Well, don't worry more than you have to about the situation. We'll manage, like we always do.”“We've never been in something this bad before,” Harry told his godfather, leaning against him. “Ever.”“Very true,” Sirius conceded with a nod, slipping an arm around Harry. “It still holds true, though; we'll get through it. We just need time to figure out what's going on, nothing more. Then how to deal with what it throws at us. That we'll do.”Nodding, Harry said nothing. Though he trusted Sirius, the situation was one that made him wonder if they would get through this without their world being turned inside out and upside down in a way it hadn't been before. That he feared. He really did.
Seated at his desk in the decrepit manor that he used for meetings with his Death Eaters, Voldemort, with his serpentine look on, the one the world knew, was grinning. That would be enough to scare the ever loving shite out of anyone with an ounce of sanity. Usually, that grin was followed by plenty of pain being inflicted on someone. Instead, this time it reflected a true happiness.
One of his contacts in the Hall of Prophecy just delivered something that made him happy. That prophecy Albus was putting so much stock in was now showing invalidated on the jar. Which meant the old man could continue thinking what he wanted when it came to that, something he knew the old goat was counting on, without realizing that what Draco pulled had tossed the biggest spanner he could into whatever plans the bearded nightmare was dreaming up. Whatever was in that prophecy, well, beyond what he knew, now meant nothing. Perfect. Utterly perfect.Putting that piece of parchment aside, he picked up a couple more. Those—they didn't please him in the least, but they were a problem he could do something about. The bonding that happened registered with the Ministry. As he didn't want it out there that this happened, at least not yet, that meant he had to hide this. It would take a bit of effort and a few spells on people, but he could manage that. It just meant that he had to pay a visit to a toady he had in the records department and cast an Imperious. Nothing more than that and something he could easily take on.After tossing those aside, planning to show them to Sirius and Harry, something that would bring him a bit of a sadistic thrill when it came to their reaction, he picked up another parchment. He had summoned a couple of his contacts right after getting here and set them to working on finding out what they could on the bond created by that potion. He didn't say why of course, letting them assume he wanted to try to track Harry and figure out what to do as he was hearing that the rumors of what Draco had done were quickly spreading through their world. Already they had a line on some books on the topic. Good. What he wanted. They promised to deliver them later in the day and keep hunting. From what this note said, they were hard to come by and it would take time to get their hands on them. He planned to pass along for them to give him the names of the ones they couldn't find. That was something he could easily manage, of course. Probably faster than they could. Looking through what was said, he discounted the part about the tracing. He had only tossed that part in there to throw everyone off, so he didn't need it.Stopping, he thought it over, then decided that maybe he did. If they were able to find something that could be used to trace Harry, that bearded nightmare could as well. Which meant he probably had to read them to figure out a way to block whatever that old man would try. While he was sure the wards around his house would negate almost anything the egotistical old goat would pull out of that sleeve of his, he wanted to make sure. So, he was going to send them on the hunt for everything they could find on tracking. That way he could put a halt to it before it started.Mind skipping to Sirius, he began to drum his long, almost skeletal, fingers on the desk. Sirius was someone he had to keep a closer watch on. The manipulative old man was one that was crafty. He was sure there was plenty about the Order, and what they could do when it came to messages, that he didn't know about. Sirius was bound to be familiar with most of those methods. That had him on edge as he didn't have a clue what those might be. Which meant Sirius might be able to get a message out or one in. That he didn't like, not at all. In fact, Sirius might have already done so. The elves, from what they reported, saw nothing, but that didn't mean anything. No, he needed to figure out what the Order could do and if Sirius was managing. He didn't think anyone could get anything in with his wards, but it was better to err on the side of caution. That he would do. Once he returned to the house, he would put up some monitoring charms then spell out for the elves assigned to watching the two what he wanted. After that, he would go from there.Looking at the papers scattered over the desk, he decided he needed to finish up what was here and tend to matters. After all, he didn't want them left alone for too long. That wouldn't do. Straightening up, he delved in, planning to finish soonest so he could get back.
