Chapter 6
“The Ministry has nothing, then? No clues where to start looking?” Albus asked Alastor after leaning back in his chair with a tired groan. It was just after noon the day after the three had vanished and they had no clues what happened, who had them, anything.
“Nothing, Albus,” Moody snorted, shaking his head. “And I mean nothing. Even what few tidbits we have they don't know about won't add a damned thing or give them a hint.” With a grunt then a sigh, he shifted in his chair, looking more haggard than normal. He had gotten a few hours of sleep, but that was all. “Kingsley said the Trace is now active, but is coming back with nothing. It can't hone in on the lad's signature. They aren't taking that as he's dead, just that it means it can't find him. That could be for any number of reasons from he's out of the country all the way to someone broke the trace on him to death. They have absolutely no way of knowing.”After giving a weary sigh and shake of his head, Albus asked, “Does anyone on our end know exactly when the wards on Grimmauld Place locked down? If they went about the same time as the ones on Privet Drive and Spinners End, it might give us a clue.” It wasn't until this morning that they knew Spinners End and Grimmauld Place were locked completely. As no one had checked after the scramble, they were left guessing.“No idea, sorry,” Moody grunted. “As far as we can tell, Severus and Remus were the last ones in the place. Remus told me they had no problems getting in. I also asked him what he knew about the wards and why they could lock down. He said that he wasn't sure why. As far as he knows, nothing should have locked them down but Sirius himself or another member of the Black family if the property went to them. That makes no sense, though, the latter that is. I asked and Remus told me that Harry is Sirius' heir. If something happened to Sirius, Harry would get everything. With the both of them gone, that shouldn't lock it down. If something did happen to the lad and he died, his so-called family would automatically become the heirs. So, that wouldn't be the cause.”“On the other hand, though, that might be it on Severus' end. We know how prickly he is about so much. If something did happen, and we're closer to the time there as the DMLE did check out his home after he vanished, they might have locked as I don't think he has an heir.” Moody speculated.“No, Severus doesn't,” Albus sighed, shaking his head sadly. “What time do they have it narrowed to for the wards on Spinners End? Do you know?”“The DMLE was in about eleven checking then again at six in the morning. They could get in then. So, it was after that. When? They aren't sure, but it gives us something, which means they think everything either fell or locked at different times. Kingsley said that leads all of them to think that the theory of a prank or stunt is out because it wouldn't explain how the times are different. Severus being involved alone leans them away from that, but they had to rule it out.” Alastor told him, shaking his head.“No, this is no prank,” Albus told him softly, head dropping forward. “Tom has to be involved.”“I can say that all I've heard, from plenty of sources, leads everyone to believe that there is involvement from that side, Albus. It's the only explanation that makes sense. If Snape is gone, we have no informant to find out anything,” Moody groused.“I know,” Albus sighed, shaking his head. Not sure how to broach the next topic, Alastor thought it over then said as gently as he was able, “Amelia is in a foul mood. Expect her to look in your direction. Since she was here when those wards came down, she knows there's something else going on. While it might not relate, and I'm damned sure she knows it, she wants to know why you were monitoring them and all else that's going on. You might want to start covering your hindquarters on some of it, Albus.”Not having expected something like that, Albus groaned then assured him, “It'll be tended to, never fear. Thank you for the warning, Alastor.”“Just giving you a heads up,” the man grunted. Giving a loud groan, he stood then told the headmaster, “I'm going to grab a few to nose around some places and see if we can pick up on gossip. It hit the papers this morning that Potter vanished, the same with Snape, so it might jar some tidbits loose. I'd suggest that you get Dung to see what he can nose out as well. He might hear bits we don't. After that—we'll see what we can come up with.”“Yes please, Alastor,” Albus told him, straightening up. “If I get any ideas where to look, I'll let you know.” As the retired Auror left, he planned to contact Dung and a couple other seedy ones he was acquainted with to see if they knew anything. That and put out word to his brother. He might hear something they didn't. After that, he was going to shore up what he could when it came to the Order, himself and other areas. That he needed to take care of quickly, before Amelia poked around too much.
“What are you working on there?” Harry asked as he dug into his lunch, eying the papers Severus was scribbling on. Glancing down at the pizza he was eating after taking a bite, he added, “This is great! We're going to have to have the elves make this again, even after we get food delivery set up.” As they were using the food Remus picked up for them in Muggle stores, the elves had taken a frozen pizza and 'doctored' it up into something delicious.
After lowering the paper he was reading, Severus took a bite as well then nodded, “Indeed. That is wonderful.” Once he took a couple more bites, he went back to what he was doing, explaining, “Actually, I'm working on setting up the food delivery. Along with a couple other areas. It's not as complicated as we thought, thankfully. As I'm using Black's account to tend to it, all it's going to take is transferring the place it's delivered, not setting up a whole new account. We should have the first delivery in under a week.”“I'm also working on setting up all the other areas we need. It shouldn't take me long when it comes to the other deliveries since Black's account was already active to take care of them,” Severus pressed on. Then he jumped as Sirius sneaked up behind him and gave his arse a good groping. “Black!” He snarled. “How old are you?”“The same age you are, just less stuffy,” Sirius grinned. Then he leaned over and kissed him.“You're incorrigible,” Severus huffed, though his tone only contained mild exasperation.“You've been telling me that for how long?” Sirius chuckled after kissing Harry and taking a seat by him. “So, what are we doing?” He asked after piling a couple slices of pizza on his plate.“Setting up what we need for deliveries,” Severus explained, trying not to roll his eyes at Sirius' behavior.“You going to manage? Between my vaults and Harry's, we should be able to cover everything without any issues.” Sirius asked, digging into the delicious pizza. “You have the Muggle cash like you said, don't you?” Severus had told them that he had a good portion of his savings converted to Muggle money. That way, if they needed it, they could get whatever it was they required by paying cash.“I do,” Severus assured him. “More than enough to get us what we might need for the foreseeable future. This way we don't have to worry about getting either of your funds converted. We can do the deliveries and whatnot without raising an eyebrow as that's directly withdrawn without your names being involved or it triggering suspicion. And I'm managing. By the time we're done eating, all the paperwork should be ready.”“Good. No need to take chances if we don't have to.” Sirius told him with a nod.As Harry chuckled at Sirius' antics, Severus arched a brow at him then said, “Mr. Potter, you're not to be encouraged by his misbehavior. He's trying to corrupt you.”“It's too late,” Sirius grinned, nudging the now snickering Harry. “I've already done it and am pressing it further.” Then, shooting Severus a winning grin, he added, “And you enjoy it, admit it.” Before Severus could say anything, he added, sobering up, “I see you're relaxing already. In the past, you would have heard me coming up behind you.”Not having thought of that, though Sirius was right, Severus nodded then admitted, “Very true. No need to stay as alert as before. All I'm concerned about is what is in the house, not other areas.”“That's good,” Harry told him softly, smiling a little. “I think we're all a bit more relaxed, other than when it comes to what's in the house.”“True,” Sirius nodded. Then he grinned and added, “Which is great! No more of the bullshite from either side of the nightmare.”After hearing Severus agree, Harry asked, “What are we doing after lunch? More of the same?”“We've got the bedroom taken care of and you have everything mapped out, so our thought was to work on clearing what we can down to the area we're staying in. We're going to ward what we can to make it safe then work on pests in that area. Then we'll get on cleaning out the room and vanishing the furnishings in it so the elves can take on getting it ready.” Once he polished off his last bite of pizza, Severus flipped through the catalogs there then tossed the furniture one over to the two. “Go through that and pick out a suite for the bedroom.” Before either could say a word, he added, tone weary, “And nothing deranged, please. We can get it ordered today so the elves can get started decorating.”
“We can do that,” Sirius grinned, stuffing the last of his pizza in his mouth. As Harry picked up the catalog then began looking through it, he leaned over and grinned, nudging him, “We just have to make damned sure that the bed is big enough for all three of us and can take Padfoot.”Unable to help himself, Harry grinned as Severus gave a groan, then said, “We'll find something neat.” As he flipped through the pages, finding nothing that good looking that would suit their tastes, he said, “I think I have an idea of a way to go about this that might make it easier and cut down on work.”“What's that?” Severus asked, sending his plate to the kitchen once he finished then sipped his tea. He was open to any and all suggestions that would cut down on the massive workload they had when it came to taking care of the house.“I thought that one of you could start at the top and work your way down while the other does the opposite. Since Eddie agreed to stay with me, I could take on cleaning the bedroom and vanishing whatever. You said you got all the pests out of there, so it's not dangerous. With you both going about it that way, it should get done fast as you've made sure the worst of the pests have been taken care of there.”“Good suggestion,” Sirius said, ruffling his hair. “I say we do it that way, Snape.”“We will,” Severus nodded. He was pleased with that suggestion as it would cut the time it took in half. Though he wanted to give Harry a crash course in warding and tending to some of what they had to use, such as with pest control, they could do it with the rest of the house. As it was, he wanted the bedroom done as fast as they could manage. If Harry could get it cleaned out, something that wouldn't take longer than it would them tending to the path to the rooms completed, it would allow the elves to get it up and what they already had in place moved. “We'll just make sure Eddie sticks with you. Any hint of a problem, you call for us.”“Oh, no problem there,” Harry chuckled, shaking his head. “No chance I want to take on some of what's around here on my own. Any sign of something strange and you lot are coming to help!”“Don't blame you a bit,” Sirius laughed, giving him a nudge. “This shouldn't take us long, so what are the plans after that? You usually have something plotted out when it comes to how you want this done,” Sirius asked Severus after sending his dirties to the kitchen.“My thought was take on pest control once we get this tended to,” Severus explained, signing the last of the forms they needed. With a tap of his wand, he sent them off to the proper places, happy that was done. Then, with a groan, he leaned back. “I thought we could tend to the pests today then come tomorrow go take a gander at what's outside. Pest control is probably needed there as well, honestly. Maybe more than in the house. After we get the pests taken care of then seeing what is where, we come back in and tackle the house. While some areas do need repairs, something we're more than capable of, I wanted to do this in what seems like a haphazard way. The library was my first thought.”Hearing groans from the two, he gave an amused snort then explained, “While that would be expected from me, with my love of books being well known to the both of you, it's for a different reason. First, it'll give all of us something to do when it comes to entertainment. That we're going to need, despite being busy with the house. Second, once we get some of this settled, we'll need to see what's there so we know what we might have to get our hands on for Harry's schooling. No sense buying books if we don't need to. After that, I want to tackle the basement. A potions lab I needed, for various areas, obviously. We can't do that if we don't have the space cleaned. Then we'll start on the bottom floor and work our way up. If we de-pest the outside, the elves can get on that so we do have something to do or are safe just to get out of the house.”“Didn't think of it that way,” Sirius admitted, scratching his chin. “Library first then. Before we tackle it, though, let's do the stairs and hallways the way we did the one leading to the bedroom. That way we're safe from anything, even after the de-pesting. Not only will it be fine for the library, but for us roaming place to place while we work.”“Another good suggestion we'll take,” Severus nodded.Though Harry was listening in, he planned to let the two of them handle the whole thing. After all, they knew better than he did what they needed to do. While they hashed it out, he flipped through the furniture catalog. As he hit one of the pages in the middle, he grinned then said, “I have the suite.”As he looked over Harry's shoulder at what his godson was pointing to, Sirius grinned then gave a vigorous nod, “That's it! We're getting that one!”With a groan, Severus held out his hand for the catalog, wondering what kind of strange furnishings the two wanted. “I get the final veto,” he told them, eyebrow up. Taking the catalog, he looked at what Harry pointed to. As he took in what was there, he gave a slow nod. It was a similar suite to what was in the dorms at Hogwarts with the four poster beds, having curtains you could shut. Though it was rather Gothic in style, he liked it. Not to mention it was expandable king size, meaning you could make it as big as you needed. “I'm impressed,” he finally said, putting his wand on the picture and ordering it. “We'll go with that. I'll show the elves the color and they can decorate accordingly with the walls and floors.”“Nice soft carpet, Snape,” Sirius told him. “That I insist on. No cold damned floors in the mornings.”“Oh yes,” Severus agreed after hearing Harry do the same. “I want the whole place, other than the kitchen, in carpet. They'll do something nice. I'm also sure that we can find furnishings in this house to help decorate with as some didn't appear to need anything more than a good cleaning.”“That could be great,” Harry admitted, looking between the two. “Some of what I saw when I was checking for pests is great looking.”“As we go through the house and work on the pest problem, we'll keep note of what we might want to use,” Severus told them, happy with that idea. “If you would, Harry; while Eddie is around, ask him where furnishings might be stored. I'm sure there are some somewhere. If he knows, we'll take a nosy through what is there so we don't have to buy something if we find what might be around to our liking.”“Will do,” Harry assured him, planning to do just that, curious what might be stored away.“Before we head upstairs, put Grover in what we're using for our bedroom,” Sirius told Harry. “While Puffskeins are mostly scavengers when it comes to food, they will eat insects and other pests, obviously. The more help we can get with cleaning some of this crap out, the better we'll be.”After Harry agreed, Severus told them, “Tomorrow we'll find somewhere for Hedwig outside. She can stay in with Buckbeak, of course, but I'm sure there's probably an owlery around somewhere. We want to find that if there is one so she can get out. I don't want to force her to stay inside if we don't have to. Though I do want the major pests tended to before we turn her loose so she doesn't end up injured.”“At some point today, we need to send a message to Remus so he can fill us in on what is happening,” Sirius told Severus after agreeing to the other part. “I'm going to say wait until tonight, as I'm sure he's out tending to the scramble we created. The more we know, the better we're all going to be when it comes to protecting ourselves.”“We'll make sure we do,” Severus agreed, making a mental note. A glance around the table told him the other two were done eating, so he said, standing with a groan, “Let's get on this. The faster we finish, the faster we can press on.” Hearing agreements, seeing the two stand, he set Black to starting from the place they were using as a bedroom to work up. He would start at the top and work down while Harry would be in the bedroom.
As promised, Eddie was in the master suite with Harry, keeping a close watch over the lad as he cleaned and vanished what was in there, including the furnishings that were, obviously, beyond repair. “The three of you work ever so well together, Harry. Quite efficient in how you tend to what you need.”
“We do good,” Harry admitted, Scourgifying the bathroom within an inch of its life to get rid of the nastiness in it. “We've had to learn to do it over the last few years. Came with the territory of hiding so much.”“Well, it appeared it worked very well,” Eddie chuckled, glancing around. So far there were no problems, but he wanted to make sure the lad stayed safe. “Are you just doing the one bedroom for now? I assume the three of you won't want to stay cramped in one and will need your own space.” That was more of a fishing expedition, of course, but he didn't expect much. Information from the Mad Monk told him the three slept together the night before. Though that was expected, the Mad Monk said, from what he saw, it appeared as though it was more than just having to share a bed. His thought was that Sirius and Severus were the couple, as Harry had mentioned Sirius was his godfather.“We'll be sharing this one,” Harry told him distractedly as he worked on not only the shower, but the tub, making sure both of them actually worked. If they didn't, the elves were going to have to come up and tend to them. “I'm sure we'll be expanding it so all three of us aren't too crowded. This is good, though. No sense in going to all the work and stress of getting us out to have separate rooms.”While Eddie wasn't sure what to make of that, he did understand Harry's body language and what he had seen up to this point. The youngest of the new residents wasn't at all stressed or troubled by the other two and didn't seem ill at ease with what was going on. Severus and Sirius were both quite protective of the lad as well, making sure he stayed safe. So, if what he thought was going on was, it appeared mutual and Harry was not being forced into anything. Most interesting! However, he also realized that between this talk and the one this morning that Harry was the closed mouth kind of person he wouldn't get much information out of. It told him he might need to talk to one of the other men. Well, that and observe more.As Harry finished up the bathroom then went to work on the bedroom itself, he asked, “Is there anywhere in the house that has furniture stored? We've seen some of what is around and like it, so we were hoping to find more to decorate with.”When those words came out of Harry's mouth, Eddie smiled hugely. As he was tied into the house and wards, he could feel the contented rumble from it, its way of expressing how pleased it was. Perfect! It meant the house would help even more, pushing along what it could do. “There are several places that were used for storage,” Eddie told him with a pleased smile. “I'll show all of you where when you get the worst of the pests tended to. You'll all love what is stored around here. Magnificent pieces of furniture that will make the house look amazing.”“Good! We've got the bed ordered, so I'm hoping we can find something to match it. It's a bit Gothic looking, though.” Harry explained, vanishing everything that he needed to.“There is much that would go ever so well with such a scheme,” Eddie assured him, trying to remember which storage area had that style of furnishings in it. As he did, he asked, “Who is this Remus? He was mentioned by Sirius at one point. It's my understanding that he's helping?” Again, it was more fishing, but this was an area he thought Harry would give up. The more he knew about such matters, the better they could protect the men.“He's Sirius' best friend and has been helping us all he can,” Harry told him then went on to explain how Remus was helping them with not only getting them supplies if they needed them but passing information.Making sure to stick close to Harry, Eddie took it all in, pleased the three had a contact that would help them.
With a groan, Severus lifted his head and glanced around. He wasn't sure what time it was, only that it was still night. It was a nightmare that woke him, a similar one to those he'd had since the Dark Lord came back, something that boiled down to him getting caught as a spy. Of course, it was understandable that he'd fear such things as he knew what happened to traitors. It was equally understandable that they were still going on. If he was caught now or the Dark Lord tracked him down, he would wish for death as what would come would be more painful than anything he experienced in his life.
Eyes narrowed, he looked around the room, giving his heart time to slow down from the rapid tattoo it was hammering. Since they were in the new room, the shadows and furnishings were different, something that didn't help. Taking in the shapes of the furniture and the shadows cast, his heart finally slowed. It was all where they had arranged everything earlier. Nothing was amiss. The knowledge and registering of that input allowed his heart rate to slow. Good.About to flop back down, his brow furrowed again. Like the night before, he was in the middle. Sirius was on his side, facing him, arm draped over his lower back. Harry was on the other, partially on his side, his arm draped over his back as well, head resting on his shoulder. Now, he knew that they hadn't gone to sleep like this. Harry had been in the middle. So, how in Merlin's good name did he end up in the center?Head dropping to the pillow, he decided that he was too tired to suss it out now. It could wait. After all, it didn't mean anything. Wiggling slightly to get comfortable, he gave a sigh then shut his eyes. Sleep claimed him shortly afterwards.
Poking her head into the room to check on her 'boys', as she referred to them, Red smiled at what she saw. The three were curled up together with the one named Severus in the middle, being protected by the other two. While the relationship appeared to be an odd one, they cared for one another. That's all that mattered after all.
Backing out, she smiled bigger. As she floated down the hall, she planned to talk to the others in the house who hadn't revealed themselves yet that she thought it was time they did. The three obviously needed protection and they could provide that. It was part of their job.Hands folded in front of her, she smiled as she floated along. She had a good feeling about her boys and felt they would all adore them. All she had to do was get the others to realize that. Deciding to get Eddie involved so they could all talk, she went to find him. Between the two of them, she felt that she could manage.
