Chapter 5
“Nothing we didn't expect,” Sirius groaned, tossing the letter from Albus on the table. It was breakfast time, so they were all at the table sorting through the mass of mail that had come in. Almost all of it was business related, of course, but the missive from Albus was in there as well.
“How do you think we should handle this?” Remus asked, picking the letter up and reading it again to make sure he knew what was in it. As expected, it was a fishing expedition trying to get information out of him, though couching it as something friendly. They anticipated that, honestly, what with whom he had visited, but still didn't have a plan on how to deal with.Harry read the letter after Remus passed it to him. As he sipped his coffee, he shook his head at what was there. If one didn't know Dumbledore, they would take it at face value and think it was just something friendly welcoming him back to the country. As all of them knew the man, none of them read it that way and could see what was between the lines. “Barmy old goat,” he snorted, putting it down and pushing it to the center of the table.“Let me think,” Sirius sighed, not positive what to do. Albus knowing he and Harry were back was coming, he was just hoping to hold it off for as long as possible so they didn't accidentally get drawn into anything and had time to make damned sure everything they could get in place to protect themselves was. By now, as he was confident of both, it was just the idea that the minute the old man knew for certain, the bullshite would start. That he was trying to put off as long as he could. After several moments, he said, “Put off answering until tomorrow. We're seeing Arthur then, so it'll come out we're back, all three of us. Once we attend the meeting, respond. Doing that gives us one more day to make damned sure we have as much in place as we can get. I'm sure we do, of course, but I want to make certain. Well, that and it'll give us one more day of freedom before we start having to really worry about both sides of this nightmare.”“I'll go about it that way,” Remus nodded, pushing the letter aside.“I think we need to let you take on dealing with him, Remus,” Harry told him as he finished his food and sent the plate to the sink. “Sirius and me—we're liable to get in an argument with him or tell him to get stuffed, one of the two. You have far more tact than we ever would on topics such as this.”“You do,” Sirius chuckled, leaning back and sipping his coffee. “We'll go that route if you don't object.”“Yes, its best I tend to Albus,” Remus said with an amused look on his face. “We'll all three discuss what goes in the letter, of course, but I'll write it.” The mere thought of either Sirius or Harry writing one out was funny because of what they might have to say to the aged Headmaster.“We also need to get something in place so we are not drawn into this mess and to protect Harry,” Sirius told them both, sobering up. “That's the biggie right there. I'm sure that Albus will see us coming back as a way to toss us right back in the middle. The other side? We know what's coming there. It's not happening. As we talked about, I want us out of the middle and our heads to stay down until we get everything in place then we're out of here again.”“And the out of here again I want made clear to anyone that asks,” he added, looking between the two. Yes, they were all aware of that, but he wanted it clear and for them to tell everyone. There was also no way in hell that they were telling them where they were living either!“Let's see what comes of this and how bad it gets,” Remus said after thinking it over for a couple of minutes. “If it looks to head south very fast, I say we take Plato up on his offer of bodyguards. He's well aware of what's going on here and was rather firm about us having those.”While Harry didn't like that idea, at all, he could understand it. “That might be the way to go,” he said, softly. “Especially among our kind. I think we can manage in the Muggle parts on our own, but the other—yeah, we might need some extra eyes.”“We'll see how bad it gets before we take that step,” Sirius sighed. He hated the idea, but figured it was coming. As it was, they were losing plenty of freedom even being back here. To have to have people around them to keep watch as well rankled. Especially since the three of them were very capable of protecting themselves. “I don't want to take that step unless we have to,” he added softly, looking between the two.“Whether we like it or not, we'll probably need it,” Remus told him gently, shaking his head in a sad way. “We may want to put Plato on notice that it's something we're going to need, at least for some times. I don't think we've considered that when we get this started, the other side is going to want the technology as well. Once they do, they're not going to go about it legally and will find other ways. That will add to the danger factor for all of us. It's also going to be hazardous for those working to set it up. Plato planned for that, of course, but we'll need to stay cautious as well. Bodyguards aren't a bad idea. They really aren't.”“I don't like the idea either, but Remus is right,” Harry added with a groan, leaning back in his chair and slouching down, looking sour. “From what you said, this place is as heavily protected as you can get it, but it's not unknown. Your cousins know where it is, Sirius. They can't get in, but even knowing is just going to up the danger factor for all of us.”“Both of you are right,” Sirius admitted, sending his dirty plate to the sink. “Let's just put it off as long as we can. I want some kind of freedom for a while.”“That's fine, but when the time comes, we need to set it in motion,” Remus prodded gently. He knew Sirius and Harry well enough that the two would rather take on anything thrown at them than have someone help watch their backs. So, he would just have to prod when the time was right.Once he sent his own plate to the sink, Remus asked, “What are the plans for today? Anything we have to attend to?”“Just finishing up the mind numbing paperwork,” Sirius chuckled mirthlessly. “That's almost done, thankfully.”“Is what's left urgent and has to end up finished today for the meeting or is it the kind that can wait?” Remus inquired, having an idea to give them all something to do so they could relax before hell was unleashed.“What needs done for tomorrow I finished. This is just shite that has to get sent off soon. More along the lines of what's needed before we open. That'll be a few weeks yet, even if we get everything signed off on tomorrow. I just need to get it done.” Sirius explained. Then, looking at Remus, he grinned, “And you're helping. I think I have everything finished only I can attend to, so you're helping just like you promised!”“I'll make sure I do,” Remus chuckled, smiling. “In fact, I'll take on a good portion of it alone if I can manage. Between the two of us, we'll knock it out quickly.”“Good,” Sirius told him, still grinning.“I was thinking, as we're caught up with everything in place, that we take the day to just get out of the house. No, not go out among our kind, but go into Muggle London and have some fun. There are plenty of places Harry mentioned that we'd like to see. We can eat out and take in the sights. Maybe take in a movie.”“I'd like that,” Harry nodded. This had been supremely stressful, so a day of relaxing was perfect.“We can also go to a few stores to see what they have when it comes to bits we liked in the States. That and pick up some of what we're still missing,” Sirius added, liking the idea.“Any idea where you'd like to go, Harry? You know better than us when it comes to some of the Muggle attractions.” Remus asked, smiling a tad as he knew Harry would pick something they'd all enjoy.“There are a few bits,” Harry grinned.“Here we go,” Sirius snorted, shaking his head. “Nothing dangerous, remember that!” Harry wouldn't pick anything of that nature, of course, but it was a running joke.“I thought going to see Madam Tussaud's” Harry told them. Seeing the confused looks, he explained about the famous wax museum. Both seemed interested once he explained it. “Maybe the Tower of London as well. That should be neat.” Then he added with a grin, “The London Eye is now open for everyone, so I'd like to ride that.”“The London Eye is that huge Ferris wheel, isn't it?” Remus asked holding out his hand. He thought that's what Harry was referring to, but wanted to make sure.“It is. And it's perfectly safe to ride. Remember, we've been on plenty of tall structures, especially when we went to Vegas. This won't be any worse than those,” Harry assured them with a chuckle. The height factor was the big one, he knew that, as it unnerved Remus especially. With a resigned sigh, Remus nodded though he didn't exactly like the really tall rides or attractions they had been on. “We can do that, I suppose. With as famous as it is, I'm sure that it's perfectly safe.”“It is,” Harry assured him. “They wouldn't have approved it if it wasn't considering how prominent it is.” Changing topics, he added, “I'd like to pick up some souvenir type bits to send to everyone back in California. More the Muggle stuff until we start venturing among our kind.”“Easily done and we'll get them plenty of nice bits,” Sirius assured him. “This should be a fun day. We don't have to worry about how long it takes or the time factor either, so we can probably do those and more. A day out will do all of us a world of good. Plus, we'll get a feel for what is where and how much everything has changed since we were around last.”“As long as we remember to avoid areas around places where our kind have establishments,” Remus reminded them. St. Mungos and the Ministry were in Muggle areas, so those they needed to steer clear of those.“We will, no problem,” Sirius assured him. “Any idea what we should do first?”“I say the Tower first. It's hugely popular and might not be as busy first thing in the morning. The wax museum always is, but it's not as bad,” Harry suggested.“Then we best get started,” Remus told them, standing. As always, he was sure this was bound to end up a fun adventure. After all, Sirius and Harry always made such things a great deal of fun.“Let's do it,” Sirius added. “And this will be the first time in a long while that we've not had several girls along with us! That'll be damned strange.”“True,” Harry laughed, shaking his head. Though he adored his friends in California, and all they did together, it would be nice just to be with Remus and Sirius for this.
“Remus has a meeting set up with you?” Albus asked Arthur, bewildered. That—it was decidedly odd, that's for certain.
“He does,” Arthur confirmed with a nod. “An official one, no less. I know that there is more than one attending and it's expected to end up a long one as it has to do with laws on Muggle artifacts. Honestly, I'm not sure of the topic, Albus.”“Very strange,” Albus admitted with a nod. “I knew he was back, of course, as he got with a few about who to watch out for and basic information of what's going on, but that's all. Have you seen him yet?”“No,” Arthur said with a shake of his head. “The meeting was set up through official channels, not personally.”“Quite odd once more,” Albus mused, stroking his beard. “One would think that, since he does know you personally, he would go about it that route. It makes me wonder about the topic.”“I really have no clue,” Arthur sighed, leaning back and shifting around to get comfortable. “The only hint is a maybe and I'm not sure if it's related or not.”“What hint might that be?” The aged wizard asked, quite curious. Because of his position in the Ministry, Arthur sometimes heard bits and bobs the rest of them didn't. Mostly it wasn’t related to what was going on, so there was no need to pass it along, but if it was connected, he was very intrigued. Remus didn't have much money as he was unable to get work in the UK. He knew he had left the country, of course, but even overseas it was hard to get employment because of what he was. For Remus to set something such as this up and other areas would be extremely odd and it made him wonder if it wasn't Sirius behind whatever it happened to be.“Over the last month or so some very odd properties have been purchased. There is nothing off about it, so no one is looking into it.” Before Albus could inquire further, Arthur explained, “That massive property down Diagon Alley by Gringotts is one, the property the Ministry used as an annex for a time. It's been empty forever because it's just too large for anyone to use. There are also several warehouses that were bought. These were huge. Some were owned by the Ministry because they either used them at one point or they were taken over for back taxes. There were a couple were privately owned. Like with most businesses when they start and don't want anyone to know, spells are on the papers so no one can see who purchased them. The Ministry doesn't seem to think anything is unusual and signed off quickly. Of course, plenty are curious as to why someone would need that kind of space, but they aren't asking questions. I find it odd that these were purchased, though, from what I can find, by someone overseas then Remus shows up wanting a meeting. If it was a business here in the UK, we would probably know and have some kind of hint what was coming. As it is, no one knows anything.”After thinking it over for a moment and getting the addresses or names of the properties, Albus asked, “There is no hint anywhere who might have bought them or a new business license related to anything connected with them?”“Nothing, Albus,” Arthur told him. “From what I can tell, the only new licenses issued since the buildings were bought, and a little before, we know what they are. They've either opened, expanded to another area or moved. The only exception is the new one that purports to sell items for protection. We've all seen the storefront in the Alley and the teaser advertisements in the Prophet for that store. Nothing else relates to those warehouses and that big building.”“That does seem—well, maybe he is involved,” Albus speculated, thinking it over. “Sirius would have the money to buy the properties, but it comes down to what he would use them for. I know of nothing he could want them for, let alone business space in the Alley. We know, other than the upper floors, nothing in the Alley is zoned for personal use. I assume the warehouses are the same?”“They are,” Arthur assured him. “From what I can tell, there has been no paperwork filed to rezone anything I've discussed. Some are in areas that can't be rezoned for anything. While this isn't my bailiwick, I know enough from checking into the bits and asking questions that I'm confident in saying nothing bought is being converted for personal use.”“Which is quite strange,” Albus admitted, leaning back and starting to twiddle this thumbs. “I don't believe, if Sirius is involved, that he needs the property for personal use. He has a home, a very protected one, that no other property mentioned could be brought up to when it comes to what would be needed to keep himself safe.”“Let me see what Remus says tomorrow. I'll fill you in when I'm done. It's just odd, Albus. Remus, as far as I know, doesn't have a reason to come to me about something business related. That's what this is about.”“Please do,” Albus told him with a happy nod. “I'm sure we'll figure it out shortly. And I am most curious if it is Sirius with him.”“If it is, they can help. Not to mention see what they know about Harry.” Arthur added quietly.“Yes, it could help,” Albus admitted, hopeful that they could find poor Harry very quickly. That was not only to keep him safe, but the Prophecy involved. And, honestly, they needed all the help they could get with the fight going on.
Harry chuckled as he listened to Marissa not only whine about him not being there, but cooing excitedly over the pictures he had taken. The ones from the top of the London Eye were a huge hit and she loved them. Looking up as the door opened, he grinned at Sirius then asked, “So, what is it you need from me on Friday? And you need to remember the time difference.”
“We're going shopping for not only what we need for the slumber party, but our new swimsuits. Even though Sirius, the huge meany, took you away from us, you have to help, Harry! You know we can't do this without you.” Then she gave a time that she knew he would still be up for and wouldn't be a hardship.“We'll make sure he has time, Marissa. No problem there. Even if we have something we have to take care of, Harry will help. And I love you too,” Sirius chuckled. Before she could do more than huff he added, “Remus is just getting back from sending you lot all kinds of fun stuff Harry bought for you today. He made sure to get you some great bits. They're Muggle, but you'll love them.”“I'm still not talking to you, Sirius, you big meany!” Marissa huffed indignantly. “You took our Harry away from us! We need our Harry and you knew that!” After a soft whine, she added, “Harry, thanks for the presents! And tell Remus thanks for sending them. Oh, and we loved the butterbeer! You were right; nothing we have tastes close.”Leaning against Sirius, who was chuckling and grinning, Harry told her, “You're welcome. We'll be sending you a bunch of it. Nothing in the world tastes like it, trust me. The same with some other bits. Once everyone knows we're back we'll go into Hogsmeade and send you some of Honeydukes chocolate. You'll all adore it. Better than anything you have over there.” As he talked, he took a picture of himself and Sirius curled up together then sent it off to her.“That is so sweet,” she sighed as she looked at the picture. “Even if I'm not talking to Sirius the meany, it's still sweet to see you together. Where's Remus? I need a picture of the three of you together, too!”“As soon as he finishes putting away some bits we picked up, he'll join us,” Sirius told her, giving Harry a kiss on the side of the head. “Then we'll get a picture of the three of us.”“You better!” She told Sirius. Changing topics, she asked about what they did while slipping in inquiring how it was going. After all, she was worried about all three of them as her father had filled her in on how dangerous this was.
Making sure the ward was up to stop the smell, Sirius leaned against the windowsill and blew the cigarette smoke out the open window. This wasn't a habit that he indulged in much as neither Harry nor Remus liked it, but he did it during times of stress. It was one he had started back in school to look 'cool'. He had mostly knocked it off, but there were times—like now.
He was stressed, all there was to it. While part of it came from the business venture, though they had most of what they needed in place for that and it would work just fine as Plato had all he could get in place set up and had done this before, the majority came from what was going on in the UK. There was so much to worry about and Harry was in so much danger even being back that it was bothering him to no end. When coming up with this idea, he and Remus, privately, had talked about just having Harry stay in California with Plato and Marissa most of the time. There would be visits, of course, and Harry would come over here and there, but he would stay out of danger there. It was something they seriously considered and Plato had agreed to let him stay without a problem. Harry just didn't want to. Though he missed his friends now, he hadn't wanted to be without him and Remus. So, they decided to do it this way. Now he was second guessing that, as was Remus. At this point, he was sure if most of this wasn't in the works, they would just say fuck it and go home, not bothering. They couldn't, though. It was all set up to go with Plato having bought most of what they needed to get it started. So, they couldn't back out now. After exhaling the last of the smoke, Sirius vanished the fag then groaned, head going back. Eyes sliding shut, he was trying to think of what else they could put in place that they hadn't yet to keep Harry safe. He and Remus—they would be fine. It was Harry that was the problem, and a big one. They had everything in place they could think of. Harry wouldn't go anywhere alone and they both would stick with him like there was a charm on all of them. One hint of trouble and they were out of there, even if they had to call an elf to get them back home. He didn't care. Harry wasn't getting pulled in and Voldemort sure as hell wasn't getting his hands on Harry. All there was to it. They'd manage, somehow. Not opening his eyes, he thought about having another fag as the first one hadn't calmed his nerves the way they normally did. Rather than sit and ponder it, he opened his eyes then shook another out of the pack and lit it. Yeah, he was sure the old habit was now back full force and he'd be smoking more than normal until they could all get the hell out of here and back where they were safe.As he smoked, he tried to think of ways to move this whole venture along faster. They had everything in place they could get to start it up, the biggest hurdle. Now he was looking for shortcuts to manage even faster. There had to be a way and he would find it. He was sure that Plato would as well as his partner knew how bad this was and the danger Harry was in. It just meant they had to find a way. That's all. He could manage that. And would, that's for damned sure.
