The second day of school was unusually cold, not quite cool enough to need his regulation black cloak but enough that he was glad to be wearing robes instead of just a tee shirt and jeans. Harry sat with Millicent trying to finish his lunch before they had to rush to Transfiguration.
"I'm glad we have transfiguration Monday and Tuesday, it'll be nice to do some real magic after the two hour nap they mislabeled on our schedule as History of Magic! "
Millie laughed aloud, "I wonder what we'll be transfiguring today? Maybe a pencil into a crochet hook or something, just a step up from a match."
"I'm sure McGonagall has something in mind. I never asked, what did you think of her transforming into a cat? That's so cool, I've never heard of anything like that what she call it? Animagi?"
" Animagi, yup, my Great Uncle Morris can turn into a bird. I've always been so jealous, can you imagine being able to fly? Not many wizards are capable of such transformation but I've always wanted learn how. It's supposed to be really complicated." Millie informed Harry.
"It would be pretty awesome to turn into any animal, I wonder if it's possible to become multiple animals. I suppose not, if it's so hard to just become a single animal. It is cool to think about though... Shite! We're gonna be late let's get going, I like Professor McGonagall and to be honest I'm a little scared to have her mad at me..." Harry was stuffing his things into his bag as he spoke.
The friends rushed out of the great hall and made it to transfiguration just in time, albeit out of breath when they took their seats. Professor McGonagall stood before the class of first years silent for a moment while everyone calmed down and gave her their complete attention.
" Most of you did very well yesterday, do not be disheartened if you didn't manage to complete the transfiguration. We're learning the most complicated type of magic in this class room, and we'll be working on that some more today. Those students who did complete yesterday's lesson please see me in a few moments once the matchsticks are passed around." Professor McGonagall said.
The class buzzed with excitement as matchsticks were passed around, once everyone was practicing and the professor was back at her desk Harry walked up to her.
"Oh Mr. Potter, quite excellent work yesterday! Today you move a step up, take this hairpin and turn it into a wooden clothespin, this is a little more complex as you'll be changing metal to wood so good luck." McGonagall said with a small smile.
Harry asked for another for Millicent and set back to their table. He gave Millie hers and explained what they were supposed to do. Sharing an excited grin they each set to work not noticing their teacher watching them curiously. Harry was focused on turning the metal into wood but it wouldn't change. Growing frustrated he turned to Millie to see if she was having any luck. She looked as frustrated as he did. Possibly more, her face was all screwed up in concentration. She didn't even notice the sweat running down her forehead, finally she said the incantation. It didn't turn into wood but it grew to roughly the size of a clothespin.
"Yeah Millie!" Said Harry clapping.
Millie blushed light pink, it looked awkward on her tough features.
" My brain hurts from all that concentration and it's not even wooden!" Millie said,
" I haven't even managed to get my hairpin to do anything, so you're way ahead of me already." Harry was determined to get this.
Unfortunately he only had time for a few more attempts. On his last attempt he thought it grew just a little but the class was excused. It was their free period now as they didn't have a class until midnight, Harry wasn't exactly looking forward to astronomy it seemed silly to him but Millicent was excited enough for both of them.
" You're coming to the library with me right Mill? I told Ron I'd meet him there." Harry asked
"No, I've got to go to the dormitory and meet the girls. It's the first time they've really talked to me so I don't want to mess it up. I'll see you at dinner?" Millie said.
"Yeah, see you the , don't forget we have that mandatory house meeting tonight at six."
"I had forgotten all about that, Professor Snape is cutting our dinner down to half an hour. We should get there early." Millie smiled waving goodbye as they went separate ways.

When Harry arrived in the library he was alone so he selected a table and set about finishing his transfiguration essay. It wasn't due until Monday but he was all caught up otherwise. Slowly the library filled up with students but no sign of Ron so far. Having finished his essay he got up and chose an interesting book to read while he waited, almost 20 minutes later Ron arrived looking quite disheveled.
"Whoa, what's happened to you?" Harry exclaimed earning him a glare from the library matron.
"Ran into your buddy Malfoy on the way up." Ron said quietly.
"First of all he's not my buddy, the twit thinks he can tell me what to think.... What did he do to you?" Harry asked keeping his voice low.
"He cursed me when I was walking away, it missed but then he made a remark about my mother and I kinda lost my cool. I tried to hit him and his troll like cronies threw me down the stairs." Ron spat out.
"What a bloody fink! We'll get him back for that Ron. Just let me formulate how. C'mon it's already dinner time and I was supposed to be there early." said Harry.
The two boys headed down to the great hall where they were forced to part ways and sit with their respective houses. Millie had saved him a seat and was already eating. She looked unhappy but shook her head at Harry when he looked at her inquisitively promising she'd fill him in later they both ran down to the dungeon arriving in their common room right at five fifty-nine. The Potions Master was a few minutes late, he arrived with Draco and his cronies in tow, looking very grumpy indeed.
" A new year is upon us. The older students are familiar with what I expect from all members of my house so this first meeting is directed towards all of you first years. As three students have already received detentions from me, I must reiterate bullying is not tolerated. If anyone in this house is caught tormenting any student the punishment will be much worse than detention. Regardless of what you may have heard from other students I do not favor Slytherin students. I expect you all to behave like respectful young adults. You will be respectful to teachers and students, am I clear?" Professor Snape said in a dangerous voice.
There was a general murmur of agreement throughout the first year Slytherins.
"When I ask a question I expect an answer! All together say 'Yes Professor Snape'"
"Yes Professor Snape!" The first years chorused together Crabbe and Goyle's deep tones were just a little slower then everyone else but it seemed to appease their head of house.
"Thank you. Now we will have a family meeting like this every month, if you are not performing up to par. Which for slytherin students means receiving any mark for under an 'A' you will be publicly humiliated, that's for your work in class, There are always older students in the common room to help you with your homework so if you receive a grade lower then 'E' on any homework you will be publicly shamed. No excuses will be accepted. Our next meeting will be October seventeenth at this same time." Snape left unceremoniously.

Harry sat in the common room helping Millicent with her paper for transfiguration as he had finished his that afternoon. There was only an hour until astronomy and the two friends were already exhausted. They would get used to their schedule Harry supposed as he yawned loudly causing a chain reaction amongst all the sleepy eyed first years waiting in the common room. Millicent yawned deeply and blew on the fresh ink of her essay before rolling the sheaf of parchment tightly and placing into her book bag.
"Let's just go, the north tower is all the way on the other side of the castle. We'll get there early but it beats sitting here." Millicent directed at Harry.
He nodded tiredly and stood surprised to find the whole flock of first years standing with him.
"As a group then?" Harry asked.
They all left the dungeons together Draco and his cronies at the back trying to pretend they weren't part of the group. Seeing Draco in the back made Harry feel somewhat bad for the kid. He was just like the rest of them but he had a horrible attitude and a sense of entitlement that made him unbearable to speak to.
The small group arrived at the top of the north tower with only ten minutes to spare. They has been stopped by three prefects on their way demanding to know why they weren't in bed. Harry figured they should already know why but he was polite. Professor Snape hadn't mentioned being respectful to prefects but Harry didn't want to take any chances. The Potions Master's reasoning behind the strict rules was starting to make sense to Harry, the word Slytherin had a definite stigma.

"Wasn't it peaceful Harry? Examining the stars, charting them. Gauging their movements.... I'm so relaxed." Millie said happily
They were back in the common room, everyone else had gone to bed but Millicent had convinced Harry to stay up a bit later with her. Harry was tired and knew he'd regret it on class the next morning but he'd never seen Millie so happy and excited about a class. It had made a class that would've been boring and drawn out into an exciting time, everyone there had fed off her enthusiasm for the subject. Professor Sinestra had said they were best class he had in years.
"It wasn't nearly as boring imagined it would be," said Harry, " What happened with the girls earlier? You didn't look overjoyed at dinner..."
"They don't want to be my friend. They wanted to know about you, if we were dating. Pansy Parkinson apparently has a major crush on you. Then they offered to give me makeup advice and I had to leave. I should've known they didn't like me for me. The good thing is that I don't really care, they just don't affect me. I thought it would be nice to have some female friends but I think I'm better off without them. " said Millicent astutely.
"I'm sorry Millie, but your probably right. Who needs friends like that when we've got each other....... Is pansy the one that looks like a pug?" said Harry.
"Yeah!" Millie said through snorts of laughter.
"Well on that note I'm ready for bed. Know any spells that prevent nightmares? I have a bad feeling feeling I'll be haunted by pug faced girls with hormonal disorders tonight in my dreams." Laughed Harry waving at his friend from the door to his common room.
