Chapter 6: Discoveries
Sunday started cloudy and damp, rain was on its way and as expected the students either wanted to play games or sleep in. Harry shakes his head as he heads to the Room of Requirement, rainy days were the best to relax to but he had important things to do. Inside the room was a comfortable chair and the reading material he needed; after getting a list of books from Draco and Neville he decided to begin learning how to be a proper Lord.
The titles long ago were given to those who owned vast amounts of land and had workers who resided on the acreage, along with their families; over time they became small villages owned by the main landowner, who was then considered a Lord. There were some who, over time, lost their land due to debts or financial hardships, and while they retained the title, lost the power that was associated with it. Those with powerful names also had a large amount of wealth and land, still; like Malfoy, Black, and Potter to name a few. Those who held Lordship titles but didn’t have the power were families like the Prewett, Weasley, and Flint families.
He flipped through the pages, realizing this first book focused more on the names of families with titles and property, though for obvious reason it didn’t list the locations or even amounts. He made notes of how some families fell, which ones still had a lot of power, and which ones seemed to have been forgotten. He was pleased to see the Peverell name was mostly forgotten but still considered powerful; that will come in handy down the road.
He went through the titles and pulled out a book; Duties and Decorum of a Lord or Lady. Deciding that was where he needed to start, Harry opened the book and began reading, making notes when necessary. He discovered early on in his trips to the Room that the house elves had easy access, and provided food and drink as needed; he also discovered that if it was conjured up by the room, it had to stay there as it was just an illusion of the real thing. So while he couldn’t take any of these books out, they would be a copy somewhere in the school, property of the school.
Harry of course lost track of time, as he expected, so when he heard the door open he looked up a bit confused. He saw Blaise Zabini there and for a moment experienced conflicting emotions; part of his mind was glad to see he arrived, another part felt contempt at being bothered by a Slytherin. He must’ve shown his confusion because as Blaise came closer he took a look at Harry and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“I’m not sure, but it feels like I should despise the fact you’re here, when I know that it’s a good thing.” Harry continued to think over what could’ve happened between Saturday morning and now.
“Well that is odd; did you know Hermione was thinking of speaking to Professor Snape about a potion?” Blaise stopped what he was about to say as a myriad of emotions seem to go over the green eyed young man’s face.
Anger and hatred sparked inside of Harry, which caused him confusion. He felt angry that Blaise was here, bothering him; hatred at hearing Snape’s name, however he was confused because he knew Professor Snape and himself were getting along, and he had agreed to meet Blaise. Potion…he remembered he had tea with the Headmaster after dinner yesterday.
“Blaise, may I call you that?” He got the confirmation and took a moment to think of how to word his question. “You’re good at potions, knowing about them and such, especially those not frequently sold; do you know if there is a potion that…well, is like a compulsion or Imperious like? Something that would influence the person who consumed it to act in a way they may not, upon the suggestion of the person who gave it?”
“Yes, it’s called the Compulsion potion. I know, not very creative but not many potion names are. Its uses are closely watched by the staff of St. Mungo’s and the Ministry, and only a select few are allowed to brew it. You think you’ve been given some?”
Harry nodded, “Just thinking about Slytherins and Professor Snape is sparking anger and hatred, yet I know that’s not how I feel. We’ll discuss it in a moment, let’s get this oath settled. Was there any questions?”
Blaise eyed him curiously for a moment, wondering if this Compulsion potion would affect the oath in any way; he hoped not. After asking some questions, Blaise agreed to the oath and had the magic settled around him.
“Now I’d like for you to do something, and I have a feeling you’ll have to word it carefully. I would like for you to ask Professor Snape if he knows a counter-potion for the Compulsion potion, and if so, if he could brew it. He had been assigned to take me to Diagon Alley yesterday and I was alright; after dinner I had tea with the Headmaster and now anything Slytherin or tied to Professor Snape makes me feel agitation. He often has tea with the Headmaster as well; I wouldn’t put it passed the old man to have laced the Professor’s tea as well.”
“Harry, why would the Headmaster want you and Professor Snape against each other? It seemed like he was always trying to get the Professor to ease up on you.” Blaise watched as Harry fought back a sneer and he had to admit it was unusual. Harry and he never crossed wands before and never said more than a neutral greeting in the past, so for him to show such contempt it confirmed to Blaise, at least, there was a potion at work.
“I don’t know, but I know something odd is going on. Can you go now, please…I’m sorry, this is just bothering me.”
“I understand; no one likes to be out of control of themselves.” Blaise stood and quickly left the Room; he had a Professor to question and thoughts to figure out.
Hermione had debated coming to talk to Professor Snape all last night and all this morning; she knew he was a bit more tolerant of Gryffindors, or at least her, Harry, and on occasion Ron. Yet she never spoke with him outside of the classroom and she was fighting down her nerves to do so now. Just as she was about to approach his office door, she heard someone behind her.
“Hermione, wait a minute.” Blaise was glad he caught her before she knocked. If things were as Harry suspected, he may be even nastier to a Gryffindor right now than before.
“Blaise, is there a problem?” She was carefully brought away from the door and down the hall.
“Possibly; I just came from speaking with Harry, he said he felt quite angry and agitated upon seeing me.” Hermione’s eyes widen and Blaise nodded, “Yes he said that was unusual because he knows he was expecting me, and he knows he was fine yesterday. He suspects a Compulsion potion was used and I came to speak with Professor Snape, only if things are as Harry suspects, the Professor might be under the Compulsion potion too. Has he been…different to any of you outside of class or around other students?”
Hermione chewed on her lip in thought, Harry said he wanted to wait to let it be known he was part of their group, however he never mentioned anything about his treatment towards them. “Well I know he and Harry weren’t quite as volatile towards each other.” That’s as far as she felt comfortable saying.
Blaise nods, he felt there was more she wasn’t saying, but this was Professor Snape after all and he was a very private man. “Alright, let me go speak with him; go meet up with Harry in the Room and I’ll bring the Professor up. At the very least he can make the potion up there. Oh and I did agree to the oath.” He smiles as she looked relieved and waits until she goes around the corner before approaching the Professor’s door and knocking.
“Enter.” Severus Snape glared at the incompetent essay before him; he contemplated just putting a red slash through each of those infernal Gryffindor papers and be done with it. He looks up and motions for Zabini to sit.
“Professor I had a few questions if you have some time?” Blaise knew this would be a dance of words, and if the Professor was under the compulsion, it would be all the more difficult.
“Of course, Mr. Zabini.” He pushed the stack of papers off to one side; they could wait, it wasn’t like the information would change.
“I was speaking to a friend earlier and mentioned a person they used to dislike but had begun changing opinions on. However, this time, my friend was even angrier and more hate-filled towards this person, who I know hadn’t done anything to warrant such a reaction. They admitted feeling confused, as a part of their mind knew they didn’t hate this person, yet their emotions were so far different. When asking if anything unusual happened, they admitted to accepting drink from someone that they haven’t socialized with in a while.” At least Blaise assumed it was a while; he wasn’t always watching Harry’s actions, but he hasn’t heard of him visiting the Headmaster until last night.
“You suspect that person to have given your friend a potion, the Compulsion potion?” Severus raised his eyebrows; that was a serious accusation.
“I do, Professor; I know it’s a carefully controlled potion and not available for purchase, but we both know some people have ways around that. Sir, the only reason I was able to put this together was because my friend is able to fight off compulsion curses, like the Imperious, so I imagine it’s the same for a potion. Would someone who has a difficult time fighting things like that be aware they were under the influence of such a spell or potion?”
“No, Mr. Zabini, unless that person was good at looking at their memories or had a Pensive to review memories before this drastic shift in opinion or personality, they would never know.”
Blaise happened to glance over at the essays and saw the amount of red on the top one, Neville Longbottom’s. He decided to test a theory out.
“Sir I’ve noticed Weasley and Potter are a bit more studious than they have been in the past…” He stopped and blinked; the Professor was very good at keeping his emotions in control, even hatred. However the anger and hatred that flashed over his face startled Blaise; he hasn’t seen that much emotion throughout their whole school career so far.
“Weasley is incompetent at best, and Potter is little better. They waste parchment and ink on their pathetic attempts and I cannot fathom how they managed to get into my class.” Severus focused on Blaise, who was looking at him shocked.
“Sir, I have never seen you like this; did something happen between you and Potter on your trip out yesterday?”
“Trip out? Why would I bring Potter anywhere, and who said I went anywhere yesterday?” He sneered at the idea, but something tickled in his mind.
“Sir, I think you’ve had some Compulsion potion as well. Hear me out, please. Draco and Harry have been getting along and speaking civilly; he told me you were going to escort Harry to Gringotts yesterday. Do you not recall doing so?”
Severus sat and thought a moment; Draco wouldn’t lie about such a thing, especially not to Zabini. Plus he had this feeling that he did leave Hogwarts yesterday but the reason why and who he was with seems to elude him.
“Mr. Zabini I will need to take a moment to go through my memories of yesterday; if I find that I have been under the effects of the potion, where can I find you to give you the antidote for your friend?”
“I’ll wait for you outside your door, if it’s all the same Sir, and then you can come with me. My friend is somewhere safe and it has plenty of space for you to brew there as well.”
Severus nodded and waved Blaise out; once the door closed he moved off to where he kept the Pensive Albus allowed him to use. He was only thankful the man has yet to ask for it back. Focusing on when he woke in the morning until he retired for the evening, Severus pulled out the memory of yesterday and dropped it in the liquid. Swirling it around, he made sure his door was locked and warded before submerging himself into his memory.
Blaise stood leaning against the wall opposite of Professor Snape’s door having cast a subtle ward that would have anyone approaching his office think of something else or somewhere else to be. It took a few minutes, but soon enough the door opened
Professor Snape emerged from his office, a thunderous expression on his face. “Your friend you suspect is under the potion, who is he?”
“Harry Potter, Sir.” Blaise quickly moved after the furious man, feeling that the Professor just found out he was under the potion as well. However Blaise knew better than to ask while in the halls. They stopped at the stairs, and Blaise was happy for the rainy day keeping most everyone in their dorm or common rooms.
“Lead me to where he is.” Severus was fighting down his anger, but it was difficult. Thinking of Potter was enraging him, yet knowing he was given a potion that caused this only fueled that anger. He soon approached the seventh floor and they went into a door he never noticed before. Inside were three people, Draco, Granger and Potter, and Severus had fought to keep down the snarl that he felt.
Harry saw Blaise enter and behind him was Snape and he stood. He knew he shouldn’t feel this much anger and a part of him felt relief that soon this forced feeling would be over with.
“Blaise tells me you believe a Compulsion potion was used on you, Mr. Potter; he believes I am under one as well. Miss Granger, you and Draco will assist me in creating the antidote and Blaise will keep Potter occupied.” He walked over to where a table and cauldron were and began, only taking note of how each ingredient was there when he didn’t see a supply cupboard anywhere.
“Sir,” Hermione kept her voice low, “Blaise took the oath; in fact they all did.”
“What oath are you speaking of, Miss Granger, and why should I care?” Watching the young woman’s reaction, however, sparked some concern inside of Severus. If he was aware of this oath before this Compulsion potion, and it was something important that was to be kept secret, then it would’ve been locked away like the memory of yesterday’s outing. “If this is something I should be aware of, then I must’ve locked the information away before consuming that potion and thus, it remains locked until the potion is gone. Begin crushing those leaves.”
The three worked quickly, Severus giving instructions and Hermione quietly following his order; Draco had often worked with Severus and knew what he needed without words. Thankfully it didn’t take long to brew and soon he had two vials measured out.
“Have Mr. Potter sit down, then drink this. It will take a moment for the antidote to work and he will feel a bit dizzy and unsteady.”
Hermione takes the offered vial and rushes over; she sends Blaise to help Draco keep an eye on the Professor.
The two men downed the liquid while the others waited.
Severus felt his anger and hatred melt away and is shocked at what was locked away and, subsequently, what was revealed. The anger and hatred came back, but it was now directed at a new individual. He stood and looked at Blaise a moment before going over to where Harry sat.
“How do you feel now?” Severus saw two more chairs appear and sat in the one beside Harry while Blaise took the other near Hermione.
“More like myself now, Sir, thanks. Um…” Harry looks between Blaise, Draco, and Snape, wondering how to let the man know Blaise took the oath without revealing anything.
“Mr. Zabini, I was told you took the oath?” Severus saw the look in Harry’s eyes and decided to ease his conscience.
“Yes Sir, but how…Oh, you’re the friend he spoke to about Draco, then. I understand why he was so vague about it. Does anyone else know?”
“Mr. Zabini you’re sometimes too smart for your own good. No one else knows, however I believe we need to set up a meeting; have the others in your group taken the oath as well?”
“Yes Sir, Blaise was the last one today, the others were taken care of yesterday.” Hermione breathed a sigh of relief that things were back to normal.
“Good, we’ll arrange for this coming Saturday, that way it doesn’t interfere with your studies.”
“Professor,” Hermione waited for his nod, “I did want to ask if you could brew the Heritage potion…well I’m sure you can brew it, but…” she stops as he holds up a hand.
“Miss Granger yes I know how to brew it and I have in the past; however I do not have all the ingredients right now and two of them are quite rare and as such, very expensive.”
“What are the ingredients, Professor?” Blaise knew why Hermione wanted to do the test, Daphne spoke with them about it last night. Draco of course said it wasn’t important to him, but he could understand why she would want it done. He would help, if need be, because it would pay off for Draco and he was determined to help Draco find happiness.
“Scales from a Basilisk and feathers from its plume.” Severus glances between the two Gryffindors curiously upon their reactions.
Hermione gasped and looked at Harry who just nodded before looking at Snape.
“I could help with that, Sir.”
