Chapter Six
Harry was still laughing when he stumbled out of the cart in the back hallway carrying the two pups. They had woke up just minutes in to the trip and he found out real quick that Daray did not appreciate going so fast in a contraption he didn't understand. He howled and cried the whole way back causing more then one guard dragon to roar and flame at them. Saoirse on the other hand howled for the exact opposite reason, she loved going fast and begged Nagnok to make it go faster, much to Daray's horror. But thankfully Nagnok informed her that it could not go any faster and she enjoyed the rest of the ride. With the cart stopped Daray jumped down and spun around to growl at it like it had purposely tried to kill him. This only succeeded in setting off both Harry and Nagnok, which caused passing goblins to stop and stare.
“You are such a baby. It is only a cart, it is not alive so growling at it does nothing!” Saoirse huffed at the other pup.
Harry snorted but managed not to burst out laughing again. He grabbed the male pup back up and headed toward the lobby with Nagnok. They were still quite a ways away when they first became aware of the commotion. It came to them as raised voices and a lot of unrecognizable noise. Harry glanced at Nagnok who had a perplexed look on his face as he quickened his pace. The closer they got the more distinct the voices became and Harry realized that he recognized a few of them. Sighing Harry pushed open the door to the lobby to find a scene of chaos. Dumbledore and quite a few of the order were facing off against a line of guards who were blocking their progress forward. Dumbledore was making demands at an important looking goblin and none of them seemed to be listening.
“I demand that you produce Harry Potter or take me to him.”
“And I told you that you have no right to come in here and demand anything, especially not the invasion of a clients privacy.” The goblin replied in a snarl.
“I am his guardian and this bank has no right to contact him without my knowledge. Nor can you get him to sign anything without me present.” Dumbledore's face was dark and as angry as Harry had seen it . “So anything that has been done today is illegal and will be dismissed. So just send the boy out and we will be on our way.”
Harry's eyes narrowed, “That's funny, since I seem to be the only one who didn't know that you were my guardian.”
Dumbledore and the goblin both jumped and turned toward him. The goblin recovered first, while the wizard stared. “My Lord Potter-Black have you finished your business to your satisfaction? Is there anything I or this bank can do for you?”
Ignoring the dumbfounded looks on the Order members faces at the titles Harry nodded and smiled at the goblin who seemed to be the bank manager. “Oh yes. It was very satisfactory, though now that I think about it, no one mentioned the bill.”
The goblin smiled, “Your bill has been paid in full, never fear. Is there anything else?”
Harry looked sideways at Nagnok and grinned, “Yes, I would like Nagnok to receive a thousand galleon bonus from the Black Vaults for his outstanding service to me today.”
There were gasps from the goblins and wizards a like at the announcement. But Dumbledore spoke up first. “Now Harry I'm sure you didn't mean to state such a large sum. I'm sure a hundred galleons in more then enough.”
“No Albus, I meant what I said. You should not try to put word in my mouth.” Harry glared at the old man, ignoring the mutters from the crowd, before turning to Nagnok. “Thank you for your help and guidance. Please enjoy your bonus.”
Nagnok bowed, “Thank you my Lord. My good wishes go with you on your journey.”
Harry nodded at the goblin who turned and retreated to his office. Harry turned to the door to the outside when Dumbledore spoke up once more.
“Harry, it is Headmaster or Professor Dumbledore. I will not abide rudeness. Now come on we need to talk about what you thought you were doing coming here, then we need to get you back to your family's house. I'm sure they are worried about you.” He spoke in his grandfatherly voice but Harry could see the anger in his eyes.
“Actually, Albus, the last time I checked this was a bank and not the school, and the school year is over. To call you by your title outside the facility is a sign of respect and at the moment I have no respect for you. But if you insist on titles you should address me as Lord Potter-Black, for I don't remember giving you permission to refer to me by my first name. As for my family, you show your failing as a guardian if you think that they are missing me.” Harry replied. “They left on Monday and wont be back until Sunday. But don't worry the scraps of food they left kept me from starving.”
“Harry!” The loud authoritative voice of Mrs. Weasley rang out over the gasps and mutters. She forced her way to the front of the crowd. “There is no call for such disrespect to the Headmaster! And if your relatives left you unattended you should have informed him immediately!”
“Why would I when I didn't even know he was my guardian? And speaking of things I don't know Albus, when were you going to inform me of my lordship? Or tell me about my family's vaults?” Harry's voice had risen as he turned to face the ancient wizard. “How about the letter that my mother left in your care before she died? The one you were suppose to give me on my eleventh birthday?”
“Potter! Stop this childish display and do as your told. Dumbledore is only doing what is in your best interest and in the interest for the greater good.” Mad Eyed Moody spoke up from beside Mrs. Weasley. Dumbledore turned to give them a placating gesture before turning back to Harry.
“Now Harry my boy, I know that you have obviously had a hard couple of days. But this behavior will not be tolerated. Now you will apologize and then we will go talk in detail about what you have been up to.”
“Actually we wont. You see what I was doing here today was excepting all the legacies left to me by my parents. This started with an inheritance ritual which told me all I was due. I then claimed my lordships and all powers and responsibilities that came with them. Then I went through the Legacy ritual to unlock the Legacy left to me by my mother, which made me at least half Fae. As half Fae I was able to chose which tradition I wished to follow and hold true to. I decided that I wish to know my mothers people and beliefs so I chose to follow the Fae traditions.” Harry was watching the faces around him and he saw a look of understanding slowly rise onto some of the ones who work for the Ministry. “So from this day on I am a member of the Fae community. As of today, as a sixteen year old Fae, I am a legal adult and I don't have to go anywhere with you.”
Dumbledore's face hardened even more. “Your mother was a muggle born witch, not a Fae. To make you half Fae she would have to be a full Fae and she wasn't. So stop with this attentions seeking ploy and lets get going. I would hate to think what your parents would say about your behavior today.”
This earned him a shocked look from Mrs. Weasley and a couple other members started to mutter to each other.
“Do not presume to tell me who or what my mother was!” Harry's anger he had been trying to keep control off finally snapped and when it did he felt his power begin to rise along with it. It rose like a wind in the room ruffling papers and causing goblins to have to grab their work to keep it from blowing away. “You have done nothing but pick and chose what you wanted me to know from the very beginning! A lie by omission is just as bad as a lying to my face! But as of today I no longer have to put up with it. The Ministry has already sent me my ID and informed me that my trace is gone, I have no more need of a guardian. Your fired. Not only that but I have claimed my seats on the Wizengamot so there is no need for you to worry about them either.”
“Harry, that is enough! This behavior is unacceptable. I don't know what you did to make the ministry think that you are half Fae but we will get this straitened out. Now lets go.” Dumbledore had lost his friendly tone and Harry did not like the look in his eyes.
“For a wizard as smart as your suppose to be, you are being very dense. I am not now, or ever, going anywhere with you again. I have here by broken all ties with you and your order. I will be my own man and live my own life. You are not going to have any say in what I do from now on.” Harry turned from the fuming old man and made his way toward the doors, but stopped when he saw Remus in the crowd. The man had a devastated look on his face and Harry decided to call out to him. “Hey Remus I was wanting to talk to you, would you like to accompany me on my shopping trip? I have things I need to buy.”
Remus brightened up and pushed his way out of the crowd. “Of course, Pup. What are we shopping for?”
Harry led the way out of the Bank and down onto the street. The pups wiggled to be let down but he tightened his hold and they got the idea, he would let them down when they had collars and leashes. He didn't need them to cause a scene in the bustling crowd of shoppers going about their business. It was late afternoon and Harry knew that he only had a few hours to shop before the stores closed. “I need to buy supplies for these two beasts and some clothes. I hope to get a whole new wardrobe in the next couple of days as well as to go through my accounts and properties. I need to get things ironed out. But first the two of us need to talk, I need to know just how much you knew of what was being kept from me.”
Remus gave him a slightly guilty look before starting to talk. “I knew about your title, because your father was Lord Potter before you. I brought it up with Dumbledore at one point, but he told me that you wanted to be treated like a normal teenager and not to bring it up. I know that you don't get to be a normal teenager often, but I thought that at least in this way you could be. At least for a while. But it seemed that Dumbledore played me.”
Harry turned to Remus as they reached Magical Menagerie and came to a stop to the side of the door. He studied the man he considered a honorary uncle and decided to take a chance. “Very well. I have a very important question for you.”
“You want to know if I am more loyal to Dumbledore or to you? Is that it Harry? There is only one answer for that, Pup. You are the only pack I have left, you may not be blood but you are family. Where you go I go, and you don't have to worry about me reporting to the old fart. He has broken my trust and used me to help keep you from your inheritance. I am with you, pup.” Remus stared at Harry with a determined look on his face.
Harry nodded and turned to enter the store. “Good, I will need your help in the near future. For now come help me get these two out fitted so that I can let them down, they weigh more then you'd think.”
Remus chuckled and passed Harry to hold the door open for him so that he could pass through into the dim interior of the shop. Harry nodded his thanks and headed to the counter to speak to the shopkeeper. It took a little while, but they eventually had both puppies out fitted with thick leather collars design to magically expand up to three inches before having to be replaced, magical leashes that magically attach the collar to a bracelet warn on the owners wrist without the need for a rope between the two, and he had bought enough toys and chew bones to keep them happy for a while. With a quiet order to keep close the pups were placed on the ground and Harry led the way back out to the street. The puppies pranced around his feet as he and Remus made their way toward the clothes shops. Harry had made a rough mental list of things he both needed and wanted.
The first stop was a small shop down a side alley that specialized in the working of leather. Once inside Remus settled into one of the chairs near the door and, with a simple stay order, the puppies settled down next to him. Harry browsed the racks and displays taking in the multitudes of designs, styles, and leather types. There were some that drew his attention and held it like a vice, while others didn't even warrant a second glance. So it was that after he had explored the whole store he approached the store owner who had been watching the entire time.
“I have no idea what size I am and is it possible to try some of the different styles? I have a couple that I like and I need to narrow it down.”
“Sure. Just back there in the dressing room is an outfit, it will fit you no matter what your size. It will produce a piece of parchment with your sizes written on it. Then when we know your sizes we can find you a close match to try on.” He pointed toward the back of the store and Harry thanked him before heading off.
Harry entered the dressing room to find a complete plain leather outfit hung on the wall and he quickly stripped down to pull it on. At first it was a little loose, then a little tight but it soon settled into a snug fit around his body. Looking in the mirror Harry could see that the outfit was ugly, no craftsmanship having gone into it, but the feel of it was enough to make Harry want to buy it. Years of having to wear baggy clothing and fighting to keep them in place left Harry with a love of tight, formfitting clothing. Harry took a moment to examine his reflection. It was him, he recognized the eyes and the shape of the face, but the rest looked so alien. He was taller and broader in the shoulders, as well as darker of skin. It appeared that his skin was permanently tanned now and the muscles that he had developed playing Quidditch were more pronounced now. A flash of light and a soft rustle drew his attention to a piece of parchment that suddenly appeared at his feet. Harry quickly changed back before grabbing the list of sizes and heading back out to the floor. The owner took the sizes and followed Harry through the racks to help him pick out close enough matches to give Harry a good idea. Taking them he headed back into the dressing room and tried them on, it took a long while before he had made his decision. Changing back he headed once more to the counter where the owner stood.
“Is there something I can get you?” the owners voice was not very friendly, as if he expected Harry to be wasting his time.
“Yes, I have a good size order so you might want to take notes.” The owner snorted but pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill. “I want one outfit, vest, pants, and boots, made from Black Hungarian Ridgeback leather tooled with the Chinese dragon pattern done in emerald and the boots done in the shin high double buckle style with silver buckles. Then I want a second outfit made from light fawn Hungarian Ridgeback leather tooled with the wolf pattern done in black with the boots in the shin high tied up style. Then I want three pairs of matching pants and boots done in white, brown and black Hungarian Ridgeback leather with the boots being in the tie up style. I will also need a pair of the dress boots for formal occasions. Then I will need gloves for riding, potion working, gardening, and winter. Speaking of winter I will need a coat for the cold seasons. Lastly I will need a couple belts and I would like a selection of the arm bands over there. The ones charmed for protection, luck, and good health in the dragon, wolf, Celtic tree, and pentagram styles with the white on black color scheme.” Harry took a moment to think before he decided that that was all. “That is all of it.”
The owner nodded and continued to write for a moment then looked up at Harry. “That is quite an order. To be blunt, do you have the money to pay for it all.”
Harry grinned, “I do. I recently came into an inheritance that I decided to make use of.”
“Right, well it will take a little while to get it all done. There are some you can take with you today, like the gloves, belts, and arm bands. I can probably have the three pairs of matching pants and boots tomorrow after noon, maybe even one of the full outfits as well. The coat, dress boots, and last outfit will be done in three days at the latest. Now do you want any extras added to the leather, any spells? Here is a list of available spells, why don't you look it over while I get together the things you can take with you.” The man paused, looked Harry up and down before continuing. “If you are interested I carry auto-fit outfits. They re-size themselves to fit the first person to put them on, it is a one use spell. They are not decorated or too stylish but they should hold you over until your first outfit done. Speaking of, which do you want done first, the dragon or the wolf?”
“That is perfect! I will take one of those outfits and its the dragon I want done first.”
“Okay, you look over the list and I'll go get your things.” The man walked toward the back of the store as Harry picked up the list and read through it. Some of the spells were useful for him, but others would be a wast of time. By the time the owner had returned Harry had picked the extras he wanted and told him before paying for the entire order. He had decided on the stain-resistance, water proofing, self repair, temperature control, and silencing charms, they would make his life easier in the long run. The owner wrote down the specifics before handing over the first part of Harry's order.
Harry put the gloves, belts, and all but one of the arm bands in the third pocket of his bag. He earned a curious look from Remus, but he ignored it for the time being. “Can I use the changing room to change? I would really like to get rid of these clothes.”
“Sure, I thought you might want to. No offense but those rags have seen better days.”
Harry gave a dark chuckle, “These were all I was deemed good enough to wear by my muggle relatives. My cousin's castoffs, five sizes too big and falling apart. But I no longer have to put up with that shit, I'm making some changes.”
Harry smiled at the shocked look on the faces of both men before grabbing the outfit and heading to the dressing room to change. It took a few moments for the clothing to adjust and the boots to re-size but when they were done Harry slipped the arm band up to his right bicep where it tightened to keep it from slipping off. With it in place he turned to view himself in the mirror and had to admit that he did look pretty good. The outfit was soft plain black leather and clung to him like a second skin. Harry ran his hand down the vest feeling the texture of the leather and it was as if something inside him shifted and settled. It was just a set of clothes, but it was also a symbol that he wouldn't have to live off of the handouts from his relatives or anyone else again. It was a beginning of a new chapter in his life and he couldn't wait to see where it led.
Turning away from the mirror Harry left the dressing room and headed over to Remus who was drinking a butter beer, the shopkeeper had given it to him while Harry had been shopping. The older man had watched Harry with indulgent amusement as he waited for him to get finished, he had never thought that the boy would be into that sort of thing. Harry paused a few feet away and waited for Remus to notice him, he wanted to see his reaction. Remus looked up while taking a sip of his drink and caught sight of Harry, he jerked in surprise and ended up spewing the drink he had taken all over himself. Remus sputtered as he tried to get himself under control, the sight of Harry standing there confident and at ease had caught him off guard. Finally having gotten himself back to rights Remus wondered what it was about the new outfit, one he hadn't even picked out, that triggered such a change in his nephew.
Harry snickered as he watched Remus struggle, he was more then pleased with the reaction of his father's, and now his own, close friend. Giving the man a few more minutes to gather himself Harry went to ask the shopkeeper one last question. “Excuse me but I was wondering if you know anyone who does equine leather working? I will be needing a full set of horse tack soon and I'm willing to pay for the best.”
“My brother does animal leather working, he's one of the best. He doesn't have a shop, instead he works out of his ranch out in the country. I'll give you his floo number and you can set up an appointment with him, you'll have to bring the animal with you so he can take measurements.” The man scribbled down the number and handed it to Harry. Harry thanked him and slid it into the pocket holding his paper work. Harry gathered Remus and the puppies and left the shop to continue shopping.
The puppies spent the short walk to the next clothes shop sniffing at his pants and boots, not sure about the change. “These new skins smell better then the last ones. There was a nasty smell on them that didn't smell like you. These still smell like dragon but that smell is much better then the other.” Saoirse stated matter of factly.
“It makes him happy, that is all that matters.” Daray replied.
Harry bent down and ruffled both pups ears before pushing open the door to Twilfitt and Tattings and walking inside. The shop was filled with racks of bolts of cloth and examples of the outfits and single pieces scattered on mannequins on the floor. As Harry looked around, an older witch appeared from the forest of racks in the rear of the shop. She came forward to greet Harry, but hesitated at the sight of the puppies.
“Please keep the dogs from making a mess, my clientele expect a clean establishment.” Her warning given she smiled and went on. “How can I help you today?”
“Don't worry they'll behave.” Harry paused to give the pups a significant look, they grinned and settled next to the door, and he turned back to the shopkeeper. “I need a whole new wardrobe. Robes, shirts, pants, underwear, and socks. Other then a couple of school robes, the rest is open to negotiation. Since I have very little experience clothes shopping I hope I can rely on you for some ideas.”
The woman nodded and motioned Harry to follow her to one of the work rooms off to the side. Once there she measured him from top to bottom having waived away the size list from the leather worker as not what she wanted. A few moments later she put away the measuring tape and began to pull out fabric samples to help him choose which he liked best. In the end they settled on a mixture of silk, high quality cotton, and wool in a selection of short and long sleeve shirts, pants, sleep clothes, and cloaks. Harry let the shop owner choose most of the colors as she seemed to know what she was doing and he really didn't. When they were done Harry took the socks and underwear before turning to the shop owner.
“Now I have a strange request. The man I came in with is a dear friend of mine and I wish to buy him a new wardrobe as well, but he is not going to want to except. He's proud that way. But I have the money to spare and I don't like my friends to go without. So my question is will you help me help him?” Harry kept his voice low knowing that Remus had really good hearing.
“Going to be difficult is he? Well you get him in here and I'll take it from there. Never worry, I have handled difficult customers before.” She nodded at him and he nodded back before heading out to get his friend. Remus was playing with the puppies by the door when Harry found him.
“Hey Remus could you come here for a minute, I need your help deciding on some things.” Harry kept his voice even and neutral as Remus stood to follow him.
“What do you need help with?”
“Just need a second opinion on some choices.” Harry held open the door so Remus could pass through first then followed him in.
It took a moment for the older man to catch on to what was going on, but once he did it became an uphill battle. But it was one both Harry and the shop owner was prepared for and they met him head on. Twenty minutes later they had his measurements and some of his favorite styles. Harry paid for both orders and they headed for the door. Remus had been quiet since they had finished the selection process and Harry couldn't tell if he was angry or just embarrassed. Neither of which Harry wanted him to feel, but he wasn't going to let him continue to wear rags just because he couldn't afford new clothes.
“Are you mad at me?” Harry spoke softly, glancing at him out of the corner of his eye. The man gave a start before looking at him.
“No! Of course not.” He fell silent for a moment before continuing. “It just took me by surprise, because your father once did the exact same thing, only you handled it better. He put a full body bind on me then left me to the mercy of the seamstresses. I was terrified!”
Harry laughed out loud as he motioned for the puppies to follow him outside and Remus opened the door. They walked out into the twilight of the ending day and Harry wondered how late it was and if any of the book shops were still open. He thought about finding out but the loud growling of his stomach ended the thought early. Remus looked over at him with a raised eyebrow.
“Was that your stomach? When was the last time you ate?” The older man did not have a happy look on his face.
“I had a large breakfast before going to Gringotts when they opened.” Harry answered defensively. “Haven't had a chance to eat since, I have been to busy.”
“Well most of the shops are closed now so lets head over to the Leaky Cauldron and get something to eat. Where are you planning to stay tonight?” Remus physically grabbed Harry by his shoulders and turned him toward the entrance to the alley.
“I was planning to stay at the Leaky Cauldron as I still have a lot to take care of tomorrow and I have yet to figure out which of the properties I want to make my Home. I would like you to stay as well, there are some things I wish to speak to you about. If that isn't a problem.”
“I suppose you plan to pay for the room as well, even though I could do so.” Remus asked in an exasperated voice.
Harry grinned, “Of course.”
Remus snorted and led the way through the gate and into the pub on the other side, but let Harry talk to Tom. Harry made short work of renting two rooms for the night and paying to use one of the private dining rooms. Harry wanted to talk shop with his friend and he didn't want them to be overheard or interrupted while doing so, not to mention the pups were drawing looks from the other patrons. They followed Tom to the private dining room and gave their orders before setting down to wait, the pups curled up in the corner with a few of the toys Harry had bought them. When the food arrived they ate in silence for the first few minutes until the growling in Harry's stomach calmed and they could talk between bites.
“Remus.” Harry's voice was low and more serious then normal causing the older man to look up. “I know that there is a lot that I don't know. I don't know much about the government and the laws, and even less about being a Lord. And I know that people are going to think that I was just acting rash and selfishly when I claimed it all, but I needed it, more then you could ever know. They were mine and Dumbledore was going to keep them from me!” Harry paused to take a deep breath before going on. “I know that there is a lot that I have to learn and learn fast. I plan to buy books on these subjects tomorrow and to study hard to catch up to a level were I can hold my own, but I think I would do better with the help of someone who has a base knowledge of all of it that comes from growing up in the wizarding world. So I was wondering if you would like to become my adviser and tutor and help me learn what I need to know to be a great Lord.”
Harry fell silent and watched Remus think it over. Remus nodded and smiled. “I would love to help you grow into a competent Lord. I will think over what is needed tonight and have a game plan ready for tomorrow. But what are you going to do about learning about your Fae heritage? It really isn't something I can help you with, Harry. If you have claimed Fae tradition then you have to hold true to it, or they could claim that you are not acting as a Fae and have your ID revoked. I'm not sure that you can find a book on that in the book stores here.”
“Don't worry, my mother left me a family vault full of books and even left me a note telling me some of the books inside that would help me. She and my past family members left diaries as well that will help me get a look into the daily life of my people.” Harry quickly finished his food and pushed his plate away. “On top of that I have a friend who should be able to help me learn more about what and who I am. I think you will like her.”
“That is good. A library, huh? I bet there are some rare books in there. Perhaps you will let me see this library some day?”
Harry hesitated, he liked Remus a lot but the family vault was a special place not to be shared with those not of the blood. “I don't know Remus, the Vault... the Vault is a special place that has an air about it that says that only those of the blood line should enter. I'm sorry. But I will eventually make a list of the books inside and if there is one you would like to read I'll get it for you to barrow. Right now it doesn’t seem to have any sort of organization that I know of.”
Remus nodded and smiled. “No problem Harry, I more then understand.”
Harry went to smile back but was interrupted by a jaw-cracking yawn. Remus laughed as he stood to lead the way out of the dining room. “Guess you had a hell of a day. Why don't we head to our rooms.”
“Two days, I didn't sleep last night.” Harry replied as he stood to follow and motioned to the pups to follow him out. They picked up their toys and with wagging tails trotted behind their master out of the room and up the stairs to the rooms. Harry paused by his door and glanced at Remus who had the next room down. “Thank you for sticking by me Remus. I know it couldn't have been easy, so thank you.”
“It wasn't as hard as you think Harry. You are the last member of my family, my pack. The son of the friend who was like a brother to me, and my friend in your own right.” Remus gave him a soft smile. “Get some sleep Harry, you get sappy when your tired. Good night.”
Harry chuckled, “Good night Remus.”
They went into their rooms and got ready for bed. Harry set up the puppies' dog beds, and food and water bowls so that they could eat and drink if they needed to. He also took the egg out of his bag and nestled it down on one side of the bed and then hung the bag on one of the bed posts on the foot of the bed. It was as he was digging out his pajamas that he once again came across the box that had been left for him by his mother. He pulled it out and lifted the lid to stare at the ring and pendent inside. It was with shaking hands that he lifted the ring from the velvet lining and slid it onto the middle finger of his left hand. There was a flash of light and a pulse of power before the ring took on a new form. The emblem consisted of a emerald Elk leaping across an obsidian Bow and Arrow. He looked from the ring to the pendent and saw that it had taken on the same emblem. Unsure what to think about his new crest Harry set the box aside and finished gathering his night clothes. He then took a shower and changed into his new pajama bottoms before going to bed and falling instantly to sleep.
