Part 2 New World
Day 4 - Thursday, June 13, 2002
I woke up with a head ache. I didn’t sleep well. I looked at the clock, 7:45am. What was I going to do? Did I really believe Charlie? If I didn’t believe him then I didn’t believe myself. The daisy was sitting beside the clock. I reach over and run my fingers over the petals. This is crazy. I roll back onto my back and cover my eyes with my arm. Did I want to forget him? For the last 3 days I’ve wanted to kiss him.
“UGH!” I bang my fists into the mattress. I don’t know what to do.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie’s POV
It’s 8:57am. I’m sick to my stomach. She isn’t coming. 8:59. My heart sinks and I walk to the door. I wait with my hand on the bar until the clock is properly showing 9:00 and I push through. I walk out onto the street and head toward the alley. I’m going straight to Hermione. A tear runs down my cheek and quickly rub it away. This whole situation has turned me into a blubbering girl! I’m turning into the alley when I hear “CHARLIE!!”
I turn so fast I stumble. Gina is running down the sidewalk toward me. I watch, speechless as she stops in front of me.
“Show me.” it comes out in a breathy whisper as she catches her breath. I let out a very unmanly half laugh half sob when she says this.
“Seriously?”
“Seriously.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t know what else to say. He looks at me with a mixture of shock and relief. He closes his eyes and lets out a shaky laugh.
“Right then, it’s actually a very short walk from here.” He steps out of the mouth of the alley and heads down Charring Cross Road and I fall into step beside him. He stops in front of a bookshop and looks at me.
“Um, while I agree that books are magical, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to see or do.” I said to him as I look around at what was nothing more than an ordinary street. He gave me that lopsided grin and started walking to the area between the bookstore and the record store beside it. He’s going to walk into the wall. But suddenly there is a door there. It just appeared. I look up and there is a sign that says “Leaky Cauldron”. Charlie walks through the door. I hesitate and then follow him through.
We are in a small dark pub. There are men and women sitting around drinking and talking. This is not odd since it’s a pub, what is odd is how they are dressed. Everyone is wearing robes. They look like graduation robes but much more decorative and some are actually very pretty. Some of the patrons are wearing pointed hats. They aren’t exactly like what I grew up reading about, but it was pretty close. I almost laughed out loud. I’m incredibly nervous as Charlie weaves his way through the people to a table in the corner. I slide in and try not to be too terribly rude as I look around. The bar tender comes to our table to take our order. He’s a little old man, hairless and toothless, but friendly.
“Hello Tom, I’d like tea please. Gina, what would you like?”
“Um… tea sounds great. Thanks.” Tom smiles a toothless smile at me and shuffles off. I look around some more as Charlie digs through his pockets and pulls out some of the weirdest coins I’ve ever seen. I look at it and up at him. “Wizard money.” He tells me. I just shake my head in awe. Soon Tom is back with our tea. We take a minute to add milk and sugar. Finally Charlie sits back and looks at me.
“This is the ‘Leaky Cauldron’. It’s a pub and a hotel. The entrance to Diagon Alley is through the back. Diagon Alley is like a small wizard shopping mall. People don’t typically live there, but it’s got all kinds of stores. We’ll be going there once we’re done.”
“Are you going to get in trouble for bringing me here?” I ask in a low voice.
“No, muggles have been here before. It may not happen a lot, but it happens. Do you have any questions about anything before we go in?” His eyes still look nervous.
“Charlie Weasley!” a deep voice booms from behind me. The color drained from Charlie’s face. I turned to look and let out a mix between a gasp and a squeak. I was looking at the biggest person I’d ever seen in my life. He was ridiculously tall and had a big bushy beard and long tangled hair. This may be where Big Foot sightings come from. The giant man comes over and shakes Charlie’s hand. Charlie looks like a child holding the hand of an adult. How did he fit in here? Magic? Oh, maybe it was. I had to stifle a giggle. I was beginning to think I was losing my mind.
“Um… hey Hagrid. Good to see you mate.” Charlie gestured toward me and made introductions. “Hagrid, this is Gina. Gina this is Hagrid, he works at the wizarding school.”
“Hello Hagrid.” I say as he takes my hand in his very large one and shook. I stare at him with my mouth hanging open. My brain tells me to shut it, but I can’t seem to make my body respond.
“Nice ter meet ya.” He says with a smile. His eyes crinkle up when he smiles and he does not look anywhere near as terrifying as he first did. “What ‘er you kids up to anyways?”
“We’re going to Diagon Alley to walk around and see what’s there.” Charlie said as he took a sip of his tea.
“Just came from there. Had ter get some stuff for Professor McGonagall. Well, I’m off. Take care.”
I watched him leave the pub and then turned back to Charlie. My mouth still hanging open and my questions unable to be voiced. Charlie chuckled.
“Hagrid is the grounds keeper and Care of Magical Creatures teacher at Hogwarts. Hagrid is also half giant so that accounts for his size. He may be big, but he’s as soft as they come. Hogwarts is the wizarding boarding school in England. It’s where I went to school. “
“You do realize that you are giving me way more information than I can possibly process in the next few days, right? Wizards, Magic, Broomsticks, dragons, and now a giant. My brain is on overload.”
“I know and I’m sorry. I guess if you were going to be here longer I would slowly introduce you to the different things in my world. I guess I could still do that. We could stop here and...”
“And what? You wouldn’t be able to share anymore with me. I’m leaving. It’s now or never.”
We finished our tea and Charlie paid with his odd money. “Are you ready?” he asks me.
“As ready as I’ll ever be.”
I follow Charlie to the back entrance of the pub. We are in a small courtyard surrounded by a brick wall. I don’t know what’s supposed to happen now but it looks like we have to go back into the Leaky Cauldron. As I look back over at Charlie I noticing him tapping the stick from last night on the wall.”
“Oh my god!” I gasp, realization slapping me in the face. I scared Charlie and he turned around “What?” he asks in shock.
“That! I say pointing at the stick. What is that? Is that… is that a wand?” Charlie looks at the stick and then back at me. He has that lopsided grin on his face again and he nods.
“Yes, this is my wand. “ It looks nothing like I know magic wands to be. I think of them as smooth black sticks with white tips at either end. Charlie’s wand looks like a hand carved stick that had been shellacked. “Are you ok?” he asks me as I stare at his wand.
“Yes.” I answer in a small voice. He grins at me and turns to tap the wall again. Suddenly the bricks start to move and as they move an archway appears and through the archway is what looks like a busy city street full of shops and stores.
“Welcome to Diagon Alley.”
I step through with Charlie and I stop to look around. More people in robes and hats, they are walking everywhere. There isn’t a car to be seen. It is almost like stepping back in time. I don’t know what I thought a magical town would look like, but this wasn’t it. It looked… normal, other than the clothing.
Charlie leads me down the street and is listing some of the places he wants to take me but I hear none of it. I am so busy looking around. He leads me to an ice cream shop and has me sit down at a table on the street. It’s only 9:45 so the ice cream shop isn’t open yet, but everything else seems to be.
“I thought you’d like to sit and just try to take it in for a bit before we start walking.” Charlie says.
“Thank you” I say as I look across the street at a place that sells Owls. There is soft hooting that floats across the street.
“Charlie?” I turn at his name. Two guys were walking towards us. My first thought was that the wizarding world must be made up of male models because these guys were every bit as good looking as Charlie.
Charlie stood and shook hands with both guys and then turned to me.
“Gina, these are some friends of mine. Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy.” I shook hands with both. Both are tall and thin but with very nicely defined arms. Harry’s dark haired with glasses and bright green eyes while Draco has the blondest hair I’ve ever seen on a human. It almost glows like a halo.
Nice to meet you’s are said all around. As Charlie and Harry talk, Draco looks me up and down. I begin to feel a little nervous.
“You’re not a witch are you?” he asked.
“Um… no, I’m not.”
He gives a wry laugh. “Hardly surprising that a Weasley would bring a muggle to Diagon Alley.” I’m not sure how to respond to this comment. He looks at me and then smiles and incredibly dazzling smile. “The Weasley’s are a very accepting and kind bunch, always have been. It’s just that most wizards don’t just wander through Diagon Alley with non magical people. Weasley’s don’t care what other people do or think, it’s what makes them so incredible. They will give anyone a chance and some people two, even if they don’t deserve it. If Charlie brought you here he must really like you.” I can feel my cheeks heat up as I blush. Harry and Charlie are still talking about who knows what. Draco looks back at me.
“How long have you two known each other?” he asks.
It’s my turn for a wry laugh. “Um.. I think, if I can remember back that far…. this is day four.” Draco looked at me for a moment and then started laughing. “Seriously, four days and he brought you here. How does that even happen.?”
I gave Draco the short version. I’m here for vacation, met Charlie, Charlie wanted to share magic before I leave so we have a relationship based on trust and honesty, and here we are.
Draco shook his head and chuckled. As he did that Harry put his arm around Draco’s waist. I know I started a little when I saw it, when I met Draco’s eyes again they were guarded. I smiled at him. They were cute. Draco smiled back. Knowing that Charlie obviously knew about their relationship made him that much more attractive to me because he didn’t seem to judge. He was ok with having gay friends. This was good to know, I had a serious issue with bigotry of any kind.
Finally, Harry and Charlie finished their discussion. There was a round of ‘Nice to meet you’s’ and ‘see you laters’ as we parted ways.
“How long have you been friends with them?” I asked.
“I’ve been friends with Harry for years. He’s one of Ron’s best mates. Draco, not so long. About 2 years. It took a while to come to terms with him.”
“Because he’s with Harry?”
“No, not because of that. Though it was a shock in so many ways.”
He looked at me. “While Ron and Harry were in school they fought terribly with Draco. Draco’s family believed that only pureblood wizards were worth anything. They didn’t think that purebloods should interact with muggles or muggle born witches and wizards. In fact they had a leader, of the Death Eaters, that wanted to kill all non purebloods. There was a war, about four years ago and a lot of people died. Fred was one of them. We fought the Death Eaters and we won. Draco and his family were on the Death Eater side. Something happened during the war and Draco decided that he no longer held those beliefs. When he started dating Harry we were all shocked and very distrustful of Draco for a long time. Plus, Harry had dated my sister for a couple of years so there was that too. But after a while we realized that Draco had indeed become a different person and he and Harry are very happy together. Harry doesn’t have any proper family so my mom took him in after he met Ron at school. He’s like another brother so he still comes round for family dinners and holidays. Draco comes with him. “
“Wow, your family sounds incredible.” I have so many friends at home whose families would never be that accepting.
“I think they’re pretty wonderful I just don’t tell my brothers that, they’d be impossible.”
Next Charlie took me to the owl store. It kind of stunk but the owls were beautiful. He started telling me about having an owl for a pet and how they were used to send mail. This was why he didn’t know anything about muggle mail and we were both pretty sure that an owl couldn’t deliver a message over the Atlantic. Next we went into a shop that sold an assortment of magical creatures. Some were incredibly creepy, but there were typical animals in there too. Rats and cats being the most common. We also stopped outside of the store that sold what could best be described as animal body parts. Unicorn tail hairs, dragon livers, beetle eyes, fangs and claws. It was disgusting and intriguing all at once. It also sold herbs and roots. It reminded me of a place you’d find a medicine man sacrificing a chicken. We walked a little farther and came upon a very purple building.
“Charlie, what is that?”I asked pointing to the building with the large sign that said ‘Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes’.
“That” he said “is Fred’s and George’s shop. It’s a joke shop. They started it before Fred died and George has kept it up. They do a fair bit of business. Would you like to go in?”
“Sure. Will I be meeting George?”
“Probably. He runs the store and lives in a flat above it.”
“Are you sure you want me to meet your family?”
“There is no way to go in there without meeting George.”
We walk in and my senses are overwhelmed. Things are blinking, honking, smoking, and movement all over the place. I don’t know where to look first. I find a glass cage, like the kind you’ll see puppies or hamsters in at a pet store. There are colorful fluffy things rolling around in it. I crouch down to get a better view and I still don’t know what they are. When I stand back up Charlie tells me they are Pygmy Puffs. That information didn’t help at all.
Suddenly there is a yell and someone throws themself at Charlie. It’s another red head and the boys are hugging tightly. They pull apart and there are huge grins on both faces. Appearing behind them are Draco and Harry. I smile at them and they smile back.
“George, I want to introduce you to Gina.”
“Gina, splendid to meet you.” He grabs my hand, bends low in a bow and kisses my hand. “What, may I ask, are you doing here with this git?” he points his thumb over his shoulder at Charlie.
“And Gina, I’d like to introduce you to my brother George. Yet I’m not sure why I would want to introduce you to him.”
George starts to laugh and when he does he pushes his hair back away from his face.
“What the fuck?!” I realized I blurted this out, loudly. But I couldn’t help it. Charlie, George, Harry and Draco all freeze and stare at me looking shocked. Other customers stopped to look but went right back to what they were doing.
“Is it safe to be around your family? Are you cursed? Is that a wizard thing?
“Gina, what are you talking about?” Charlie looks hurt and bewildered.
“You, Bill, George? Bill looks like he got in a fight with a tiger, you have burns all over you and George has no ear? I’m sorry, I know I’m being rude and there is no excuse for it. But you spring magic on me last night and every one of your family members that I’ve met has incredibly scary scars. Is it even safe to be around you?”
Draco threw his head back and laughed. Harry bit his bottom lip to hide a grin and he looked down. Even George started to laugh.
“I never thought about it Charlie, but she has a fair point. It would take at least one whole day if not longer to explain everything that happened to everyone in our family during the war. Charlie is the only one who got his scaring somewhere else. But if you must know, Bill was attacked by a werewolf and I was hit with a dark curse that cut my ear off. “
I hear the ocean again. One I was SO rude and two I’m in shock. Werewolves?! I sway a little and Draco reaches out to steady me.
“I’m sorry.” I say in small voice.
“No worries.” George says and throws an arm around me. “I love someone who is upfront and doesn’t play games. If you decide you are board with this tosser, you let me know. I’d love to have you whisper sweet nothings in my EAR.”
My eyes go wide at what he says and he starts laughing all over again. “Seriously, no worries.” George winks and turns to Charlie. “Hey, come see what I’ve just come up with, I think it’s going to be a big seller!”
I looked at Charlie and stepped closer. “I’m so sorry for being so rude, but George’s ear caught me off guard.”
“No, George is right. I didn’t think about it either. But it’s true, some of us have had severe injuries. We’re just used to each other and the changes. Sorry for not giving you a warning.” He smiles at me. “Do you mind if I go see what George is on about?”
“Go ahead. I’m going to look at the Pygmy Puffs again.” He walks off and I turn back to the chirping critters in the cage. Draco came to stand beside me. I looked at him and smiled, “What are these things?”

Charlie’s POV
I walk over with George and Harry comes with us.
“She’s cute Charlie.” George says with a grin. “But really, an American muggle? Where did you meet her?”
I was sneaking glances of Gina across the store, only half participating in the conversation. “I found her.” I said, without thinking.
“Found her? Was she lost mate?” George’s eyebrows were now hidden by his hair as he looked at me with amusement.
“Uh, actually, she was lost. Bill and I happened to walk past her when she was lost and she asked for directions. I ended up walking her to her hotel.”
Harry and George exchanged smirks.
“How long have you known her?”
“Four days.”
“Four days and you introduce her to magic. Merlin’s beard, what are you thinking? Has she asked you to do stuff for her? Hex an enemy? Make her rich beyond her wildest dreams?”
“She’s not asked for anything. She’s asked questions and has been very curious about the different things she’s seen in Diagon Alley, but she’s not asked for anything.”
I look over at her while we’re talking. She’s still standing with Draco looking at Pygmy Puffs. I watch her put her hand on his arm and lean against him as they laugh. He said something to her that made her laugh again and she slapped at his arm. I felt a knot form in my stomach. I’ve been terrified to try to hold her hand or give her a hug. She’s never even brushed against me, she’s intentionally kept her distance.
“Charlie? Earth to Charlie!” Harry is waving a hand in front of my face. “What’s up mate?” Both George and Harry are looking at me.
“What? Sorry.”
“You ok? You look a little peaky.”
“Um… yeah. I’m fine.” But I can’t take my eyes off of Gina. George and Harry follow my gaze and then look at each other.
“Um, mate? You don’t look fine.”
“Look at her. She keeps touching him.” My eyebrows knit together, I don’t understand. We’ve spent all of this time together and we’ve not even hugged.
Harry started to laugh, “Are you jealous of Draco?”
I shoot him a look. “No, I’m…” I let out a sigh “Yeah, I am. We’ve not hugged or anything. I’ve thought about it but I’ve not had the nerve and there she is, hanging on Malfoy.”
Harry raised an eyebrow at my use of his surname. “Maybe you should talk to her, just a thought.”
I realize Harry is right. I’m over reacting, but it’s going to bother me if I don’t talk about it. If I can be honest about the world of magic I should be able to be honest about how I feel. I hope. I head over and George and Harry follow. Gina turns to look at me and smiles.
“These are the cutest things! I wish I could have one but…” She trails off as she looks at me. “Charlie, are you ok?”
“You know Draco’s bent right?” George, Draco, and Harry all make a sound. A groan, a hiss, sounds that let me know I’ve not started out well.
Draco narrows his eyes at me, “Classy, Weasley.”
“What?” she looks around at the others in confusion.
“Draco, he’s gay.”
“I know, we talked about it after I first met them, remember.” She looked at the other three, searching for an answer as to why I am being a complete arse. “Are you angry?” She continues to look very confused.
“You’ll have to forgive my very articulate brother, he seems to have become jealous of young Malfoy here because you have touched him, repeatedly” George leans toward her and whispers “on the arm!” He pulls back and raises his eyebrows like we’ve been discussing something scandalous.
“Shut it, George.”
George smirks and Draco glares. “I need to… can we… can we go somewhere and talk?”
George leans over to Harry and whispers “See? Articulate.”
“Yeah, ok.” She looks so unsure right now. I’ve done that. Me. I am the only one responsible for creating this uncomfortable situation but I can’t stop.
I walk to the door and hold it open. She follows me but looks back at the others before she exits. I walk across the street and take a seat on a bench. She follows behind and then sits beside me but she’s leaving plenty of space between us. Maybe I’ve been wrong maybe she isn’t interested in me.
