A/N: Finally, here's another chapter for you! Packing has taken up so much of my time, you never realize how much stuff you have until you need to pack it! But I finally managed to finish this chapter, so enjoy!!!
Chapter 6“So, you and Malfoy looked pretty cozy in class earlier,” Ginny said dropping onto the seat beside Hermione.Hermione's fork clattered on her plate as she dropped it. She'd been jumpy ever since potions. “Don't even get me started. That arrogant little... ferret... thinks he's so smart. And he seems to think that just because he's my partner he can tell me what to do and put his hands all over me-”“He had his hands on you?” Ginny asked sharply. “I mean, I saw him standing really close to you, but he actually touched you?”Hermione blushed at the memory and looked down at her food, not able to meet Ginny's fiery gaze. “I- Yes, he... he was massaging my neck.”“What?” Ginny's eyebrows shot up. “Massaging?”“Apparently he was trying to get me to relax. Like I could ever relax with him around.”“But he actually touched you? Did he hurt you?”Hermione looked over at Ginny. The girl was red in the face and an angry expression clouded her features. “It's fine, Ginny. Well, no, it's not fine, but I'm okay. He didn't hurt me.”The anger faded slowly from Ginny's eyes, “Are you sure, Hermione? Because if he did... You know how good I am at certain hexes...”“I'm sure, Ginny. Thank you though. But, like I said, he was only trying to get me to relax. Not in a very efficient way, given who we're talking about, but he wasn't doing it to hurt me or be mean.”Ginny's eyes narrowed, “Are you actually defending him?”“No, I-” Hermione stopped herself. Was she? She thought over what she'd just said. He hadn't done it to be mean, at least it didn't seem that way. He may have done it to get a rise out of her or it may have been another attempt at being nice to her. She had no idea what his motive had been and that was why she had been so jumpy. That's what she was telling herself at least. Hermione shivered as she remembered how his hand had felt on the back of her neck. No, that definitely hadn't been a mean gesture. That still didn't make how he'd treated her right, but she hadn't exactly told him to stop either. As she realized that colour crept up her cheeks. Why hadn't she asked him to stop? She'd only asked him what he was doing. Oh, Merlin, had she encouraged him?“Hermione?”Her gaze snapped back to find Ginny staring at her with concern, “Sorry, Ginny. I- I had to figure out what I was trying to say. No, I'm not defending him, what he did wasn't appropriate and he shouldn't have put me in that position. However, I think he is trying to be nicer to me, or at least tolerate me, so I feel I should do the same. We do have to work together a lot this year.”“But you shouldn't have to tolerate him putting his grimy paws all over you, 'Mione.”“I know, and I won't. I realized the fault was partly mine today-”“What? How is that even possible?”“Because I didn't exactly tell him to stop-” Hermione said sheepishly.“You didn't?”“N-no... I think I was too distracted by the fact that he was willingly standing so near to me. But, I'll be better prepared next time, if there is one, and ask him to stop.”“Still-” Ginny started hesitantly.“Really, Ginny. I'm fine. I can deal with Malfoy. Have you forgotten the time I punched him in third year?”Ginny laughed, “Actually yes, I had! That was such a great story!”Hermione saw Ginny visibly relax as she reached for the pumpkin juice. Good, at least Malfoy wouldn't have any hexes thrown at him that could land her friend in trouble.“You still want to come up and see the Head's dorm?” she asked.Ginny nodded, pulling a plate of finger sandwiches towards her, “Yeah, I can't wait to see it!”The girls quickly finished their meals and headed to the third floor. They stopped at the water fowl painting and Ginny looked down the hallway.“This is really close to the library! That must be nice for you.”Hermione smiled, “So far it's one of the best things. It's been great not having to lug my books all the way up to Gryffindor tower.”Ginny chuckled, “I should have known you would have already been to the library, even though it's only the second day of classes.”“Professor McGonagall wanted us to be prepared for assisting with Magical Construction and Protection, so Malfoy and I were there last night doing some reading.”Hermione gave the password to the couple in the boat, thanking them as the painting swung open.“You really can't seem to get away from him can you?” Ginny said, following her into the room.“No, it seems almost impossible.”“That's unfortunate. Oh, wow!”Hermione smiled as Ginny's eyes got wide. She watched her friend take in the bright, cozy common room. She looked around at the room again herself, it really was quite impressive.---**---Draco had been about to exit his room when he heard an exclamation from the other side. That had sounded like the Weasley girl. What was she doing in their common room? He put his hand on the doorknob, getting ready to go out and tell her to leave, when he remembered Granger telling the other girl that she would show her the room after lunch. He heard the girls continue talking and realized they had no way of knowing he was here. If he cast the right spell maybe he could listen in on their conversation. Who knew what kind of useful information he might glean from eavesdropping. He quickly cast an inverted silencing spell and pressed his ear to the door.“-place is great! It's smaller than Gryffindor common room, but it's cozier,” said Weasley.“Yes, it is nice. I haven't fully settled in yet, and I'm not sure how much time I'll actually spend in the common room but the tables by the window might come in handy come exam time.”“You always did like to spread out during exams. Ron used to bitch about how much space you needed to read your notes.”“He did?” Granger said, sounding indignant.“Yeah, but I told him to shut it because you always helped him with his studying. I told him he had no business criticizing you for how you chose to study when you were practically the only reason he passed anything.”Draco heard Granger let out a frustrated huff, “He is so immature sometimes.”“He really is. He's lucky you put up with him still.”Granger sighed, “I love him. He can be a complete ass sometimes, but I do love him.“I know you do. I just hope he realizes what a catch you are.”Silently Draco agreed with the red head. He'd often wondered what Granger saw in the Weasel. She was far superior to him, especially intellectually. Draco had realized that early on, even though Weasley was a pure blood and Granger was a mudblood, she'd always seemed to be several steps ahead of both Weasley and Potter.“Have you heard from either Harry or Ron yet?” Granger asked. “I sent Ron an owl when we got to school but he hasn't replied yet.”“I heard from Harry, he wrote yesterday, but not directly from Ron. Harry put a note at the end of his letter saying Ron said hi, but that's all. Harry said the move went well, Mom and Dad got them both settled into their new flat. Mom even cooked them dinner before she left. You know how she gets, she apparently got all teary leaving them there, wanted to make sure they were completely settled. Harry said he was pretty sure she would have tucked them both into bed with a story if they'd let her.”Draco listened as Granger let out a frustrated sigh, “Well at least one of our boyfriends is going to keep us informed about how things are going for them.”So, she was actually dating Weasley. Draco knew she'd always had a fondness for him, and he suspected they'd hooked up at least once while out on their escapades last year, but he hadn't known for sure if they had made anything official. By the sounds of it, they had. Which sucked for him.“I'm sure Ron will write eventually.“Oh, he always does, eventually. Though they're never particularly long letters.”“Well, I'll keep you filled in on anything from Harry's letters and I'm sure Harry will write to you too. You are best friends after all. Now, can I see your room? And the bathroom? Are they as nice as this one?”“Sure, come on. You'll love the bedroom.”Their footsteps grew fainter as they walked to Granger's room. Draco heard her door open and close. He reversed the spell he'd used, it would be hard to hear what they were saying in her room even with it. He'd heard enough anyway. Granger was dating Weasley. That was going to make his task even harder. Even if she was attracted to him, she would never cheat on someone she was dating, especially someone she'd had feelings for for years. No, Granger was too loyal to cheat on the Weasel.Draco walked to his bed and sat down, picking up the book he'd managed to get one of the house elves to bring him from the manor. Would Granger's loyalty be enough to thwart his entire plan? Was it worth continuing?A small smile curled his lips as he remembered her reaction to him in potions class earlier. She had definitely been flustered by his hands on her and he liked that. Yes, it would be worth continuing his plan. Even if he only succeeded in tormenting her constantly, that would be enough. He still planned on trying to seduce her completely though, and if he managed to get her to desire him enough to dump Weasley, well, that was an extra bonus. He looked up from the book in his hands when he heard Granger's door again. Setting it down on his bedside table he walked back to his door. He could make out what the girls were saying without using a spell this time. They must be standing closer to his door.“That bathtub is amazing!”“It is. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but it looks perfect for a nice relaxing bath.”“It's huge! You could easily fit two people in it.”Draco snorted. He'd noted the exact same thing when he had first walked into the bathroom. The tub was huge and could easily accommodate more than one person. Something he would love to test out.Granger laughed, “Like there's anyone here I'd want to share a bath with.”Draco smirked. He had ever intention of changing that.“Yeah, you're right,” said Weasley, sounding almost sad. “Well, I have to run and grab my afternoon books from my dorm. I'll see you in class, okay?”“Sure, Ginny. See you in a few.”Draco heard the portrait hole close. Hearing footsteps in the common room still, he assumed Granger was still there. He quickly grabbed his school bag, threw it over his shoulder and mussed up his hair a bit. Putting on what he hoped was a tired expression he opened his door and walked out of his room. He almost lost his composure at the look of mortification on Granger's face.“How long have you been in there?” she demanded.Draco raised his brow, “A while. Not sure exactly, I was having a nap.”“A nap?” Granger asked incredulously.“Yes, Granger, a nap.”“So... so you didn't hear Ginny and I talking?”“Why? Were you talking about me?” he asked with a smirk.“What? No!”“Come on, Granger, you can admit it. It's just us here. You really are obsessed with me, aren't you?”“Gods no!” she said turning to grab her books from one of the tables. While she had her back turned Draco walked quickly up behind her. “I don't believe you.”Whirling around, Granger gasped. He'd stopped a few inches behind her, knowing how much it unnerved her to have him so close. Her mouth gaped open a bit and his eyes trailed down to her lips. A faint blush stained her cheeks.“Well, believe it, Malfoy. I want nothing to do with you-”“Again, I don't believe you,” he said taking a step closer to her. She immediately took a step backwards and bumped into the table. “You liked having me touch you earlier, I could tell.”“I did not,” Granger retorted, her voice tight.“Liar,” he said. Her eyes flashed angrily. “You liked it.” He dropped his bag to the floor. It landed with a loud thump, making her jump. “You liked it and you want me to do it again.”Before she could speak he covered her mouth with his hand. Her eyes grew round and he felt her breaths grow more rapid against his palm. Her eyes never left his and he smirked when he saw a flicker of fear flash across them.“Don't worry, Granger, I'm not going to hurt you,” he said, then he leaned closer, finding her ear and whispered, “But this is payback for telling me to shut up in the library last night.”Suddenly her hand came up and wrenched his hand away from her, “Last night? This is payback for last night? If this is payback then what the hell do you call everything else you've done today?”He gave her a wicked grin, “All that? That was just fun. I've decided it's fun to ruffle your feathers.”“FUN? You think it's fun?” she said angrily. She was about to continue when he placed his other hand over her mouth, “You talk too much, Granger, and yes it's fun.”She used her other hand to pull his hand away from her mouth again. He let her, because she was now holding both his hands firmly and not letting go. He could work with this.“Well, it's not fun for me! We're supposed to be working together this year, Malfoy, which is going to be hard to do if you keep molesting me every chance you get because you think it's fun.”“Molesting you? I've done nothing of the sort. I've merely tried to relax you, which, I noticed, you did not ask me to stop doing. And this, well, you used the same method to shut me up last night. So, if this is molesting, who started it?”If it was possible her eyes grew wider.“See, not molesting then, because we all know the Gryffindor princess would never molest anyone. So, I'll chalk it up to you being obsessed with me-”“I am NOT obsessed with you!”Draco smirked, “Then why are you currently holding my hands, Granger?”Her eyes flew to their hands, then back to his face, “Because you were covering my mouth and I didn't want you to.”“That explains why you needed to, but not why you are still holding them.”She hastily dropped his hands, “I didn't want you to do it again either, that's why.”“You mean like this?” he said, as he brought one hand up to her mouth. Her hands grabbed his, trying again to wrench it away, but this time he didn't let her. He used his free hand to pull one of her hands down, pulling her to him. She still had one hand clamped around his wrist but at that angle she couldn't pull strong enough to force it away.He heard her swallow as he leaned in, “Shhhh,” he said resting his forehead alongside hers, “It's okay to be obsessed with me, I don't mind. But, we are going to be late for our classes if we don't go soon. So, satisfying your obsession will have to wait until tonight. I noticed our bathtub is quite large, maybe after we plan patrol schedules we can have a bubble bath?”She inhaled sharply and he felt her body stiffen even more against his. He quickly let go of her, stepped back, scooped up his bag and walked out of the common room before she could say anything. He wanted to saviour the look on her face when he'd brought up the bathtub. It had been priceless.---**---Hermione was jittery for the rest of the afternoon. She was extremely grateful that none of her classes after lunch were with the Slytherins. She would not have been able to concentrate with Malfoy in the same room, not after his comment about a bubble bath. It had shocked her on several levels. The first being that he would even suggest it to her, this was Malfoy, and before this year he never would have said something that sexual to her. And secondly she wondered if him saying that meant he had heard her and Ginny talking. She didn't think they'd said anything about him while they were in the common room, but still, if he was listening to their conversations when he came up it would only add to his preposterous theory that she was obsessed with him. Which she was not. At least not in the way he was implying. Lately she couldn't stop thinking about the things he said and did to her, but that was because she was over-analyzing things, wanting to know why he was acting the way he was.She sighed, stopping outside the portrait hole. It was after dinner and she couldn't avoid him any longer. Like he'd said earlier, they did have to plan patrol schedules tonight. She would just get it over with, work as quickly as possible, than as soon as they were done she could retreat to her room.Steeling herself she pushed open the portrait and walked into the common room. “Let's get this over with then,” she said as she swept her eyes around the room. It was empty. She walked to his door and knocked on it. Nothing. Where was he? She realized they hadn't set a time to plan the schedules. She was eager to get it over with, but that didn't mean he had planned on doing them right after dinner.Going to the couch and sitting down she pulled out everything they would need, putting it on the coffee table. That done she cast one more look around the room before pulling out her Charms textbook. Professor Flitwick hadn't set any homework today but she wanted to read ahead anyway. She kicked off her shoes and pulled her feet up underneath her, settling back into the cushions to read.It was almost an hour later when Malfoy finally entered the common room.“Finally! Where on earth have you been, Malfoy? I wanted to start this ages ago,” she said, meeting his gaze.He shrugged, dropping his book bag on one of the chairs as he walked over to the couch and plopped down on the opposite end from her. “I was helping Maya with something,” he said, propping his feet on the coffee table.“Oh, well, that was kind of you,” Hermione said quietly. She hadn't been expecting that. She had expected him to have some lame arrogant excuse and had been all fired up for the argument that would have followed. But hearing that he'd simply been helping Maya had completely deflated her pent up anger, leaving her feeling nervous and jumpy again.“So, shall we get on with this then?”Hermione looked up at him, considering their last encounter this was not how she'd pictured things going. Malfoy looked like he meant it, he looked like was ready to buckle down and work. She sighed in relief, this Malfoy she could deal with. This was the Malfoy who had helped her research in the library the other night, before she'd heard that baby again.“Yes, let's,” she replied quickly, setting her book down on the table.“Okay, first question. Are we going to split the prefects up into pairs within their houses? Or are we splitting them up and partnering them with a prefect from another house?”Hermione was momentarily taken aback. That had been the first thing she'd wanted to address too. “Well, I know it's normal for them to be paired within their houses, but this year I feel things are different. I know the Professors are really pushing house inter-relations, so I think we'd have their support in pairing them with other houses.”Malfoy nodded, “Sounds good.”She paused before asking the next question. Was it really going to be this easy working with him? “Okay, what about pairings? Are we going to pair them up to the same person for the whole year? Or should we do a rotational pairing system?”He considered before answering, “What about a bit of both? We could start out with a rotational system until we figure out who works best with who and who doesn't get along at all. Then move to a more permanent pairing system.”“That's actually a really good idea,” Hermione said, slightly shocked. “I hadn't thought of that at all.”He scoffed, “I'm not just a pretty face, Granger. I have some good ideas once in a while, you don't need to sound so shocked.”“I know that, I was just surprised I hadn't thought of that.”“So, you agree my face is pretty?” he said, tilting his head towards her.“What? No, that's not what I meant,” she said, frustrated. Maybe it wasn't going to be that easy. “Look, Malfoy, we have a lot of work to do, can we not do this right now?”Malfoy regarded her for a moment, then gave a non-committal nod of his head, “So, one of us can start pairing people off and one can start drawing up a schedule of time slots that need to be filled. Which task do you want, Granger?”Hermione gave an internal sigh of relief, “I'll take the pairing.”Malfoy simply nodded and handed her a blank piece of parchment. Then he reached into the pockets of his robes and handed her a second piece of paper. This one was folded and slightly crumpled. She took it with raised brows.“It's a list of all the prefects, listed under their houses, then in alphabetical order. I asked McGonagall for it earlier, figured it would come in handy.”This time Hermione really was shocked. “Thanks,” she managed to get out.Again Malfoy nodded, then he pulled another piece of parchment towards himself and started working on a schedule. Hermione watched him for a second, then started on her task of pairing prefects together.Fifteen minutes later Hermione was beyond frustrated. She had started by trying to have each person pair with everyone else, but had quickly realized that not only would that mean their rotational system would take them practically to Christmas, but that there were some pairings that she knew just would not work. She let out a defeated sigh and rubbed her eyes. She hadn't realized how much work it made for her when she'd suggested multiple pairings.A hand suddenly closed on one of the feet she had tucked underneath her, making her jump. She looked up when Malfoy chuckled and pulled her foot towards him. He had put down what he was working on and turned to face her on his end of the couch. One leg was folded under himself, the other still resting on the floor and her foot was now resting in his lap.“Malfoy-” she started, trying to pull her foot back. His hands held on to it though, keeping it firmly ensconced in his lap, “You looked tense. I'm just trying to help, Granger.”“By stealing my foot? How is that going to help me?”He smirked, “I'm not just stealing your foot, Granger, I have other plans for it too.”“Malfoy...” she warned, tensing even more. She gave a small start when one of his thumbs pushed gently into the sole of her foot. His thumb then firmly travelled along her foot, towards her toes. She swallowed as his other thumb repeated the pattern. A foot massage? Draco Malfoy was giving her a foot massage? Hermione couldn't say anything, she just sat there staring at him.He continued with his ministrations, eyes focused on what he was doing. After a few minutes Hermione felt her muscles start to relax. He was really good at this. Just then he looked up and met her eyes. She broke out of her daze and tried to pull her foot away again.“We should get back to work, Malfoy,” she said.“I'm done,” he said, still massaging her foot.“What?”He chuckled, “You picked the harder task. It's not that complicated to draw up an empty schedule, so I'm done. That's why I thought I'd help you.”“Well, I don't think a foot massage is helping.”“Sure it is, you're already more relaxed. So, I'll keep doing what I'm doing and you keep working on what you're doing.”Hermione let out an exasperated breath, “Malfoy, a foot massage isn't what I need right now.”“Does it feel good?”“What?” she asked taken aback.“Does it feel good, Granger?”“No, I...” she paused when his eyebrow arched, “Fine, yes, it feels good. But it's still not really helping with what I'm doing.”He smiled, “Okay, so we've established it feels good and it's helping you relax, so I'll continue.”“Malfoy-”“But I will also offer my intellectual assistance. What exactly has you troubled?”Hermione glared at him. His massage did feel good, but she hated that he'd made her admit it. Could she just enjoy the sensations and ignore the fact that it was Malfoy doing it? She would like his input on the issues she'd run into and if he was done his task... She sighed. There really was no harm in letting him continue while she voiced her concerns.“There are too many prefects to have them all pair with every other prefect. It would take too long to get through the rotational system. Also, there are several pairings where I know they would end up arguing, at the very least, instead of performing their duties satisfactorily. So, it's just harder than I figured it would be to pair everyone up.”“Okay, so let's say we scrap the rotational system,” he suggested.“But then how are we going to pair everyone up? And what if the pair don't get along? Are we going to be flexible and let them change partners later if things don't work out?”Malfoy pursed his lips pensively and thought briefly before answering, “If we pair everyone with just one partner, that's twelve sets. What if we give each person three partners, and after they've completed a patrol with each we can pick which pairing seemed to get along the best?”“So, you're saying we should do the rotational system, but randomly select only 36 pairings?” she asked.“Yeah, that gives us roughly two weeks to gauge how things are going. The schedule I drew up has seventeen time slots a week for prefects to patrol. Teachers are on patrol Sundays like always and I figured we'd take the last patrol on Fridays.”“That could work,” Hermione said, thinking hard. “Seventeen time slots you said?” He nodded. “That means once we narrow it down to twelve partners they would only have one patrol a week, sometimes two since there will be an extra five slots we need to fill. I think that will go over well with the prefects.”“I agree. Here, give me your other foot.”Without thinking Hermione extended her leg and placed her other foot in his lap. She was too focused on the list of names in front of her to notice his look of surprise. He switched his hands to the foot she'd just given him and started to massage that one.“So, how are we going to partner everyone up?” he asked. She looked from the list to him, “How well do you know these prefects? Could we pick out three people for each person that we think they'd work well with? I know I could for some of them, but not nearly all of them.”“Yeah, I don't know any of them that well, I kind of kept to myself the last few years.”Hermione nodded, “Would it be unfair to hand pick some pairs and guess with others?”“It might be. We could draw from a hat?” he suggested.“Good idea, but what if a pairing comes out that we know won't work?”Malfoy shrugged, “Throw the second name back in and try again?”“Works for me, we can do the same if we draw two people from the same house,” she said. She drew her wand and made a copy of the list of names before using a severing charm to cut it into pieces. Each piece held the name of one prefect and their house. She transfigured one of the pillows into a large bowl and placed all the names inside it before placing it on her knees between them. “I'll pick one name and you pick the other?”“Sounds good,” he said.Hermione reached in and drew out the first name, “Paula Green, Hufflepuff.”“Do you want me to pick just one name or should I grab three?” Malfoy asked, letting go of her foot with one hand to reach into the bowl.“May as well pick all three now,” she replied, writing down Paula's name on a sheet of paper.“Okay, we have Albert Thompson, Gryffindor, Betty Blake, Slytherin and Thomas Grue, Hufflepuff.”Hermione wrote down the first two names, “So, put Thomas back in since he's in the same house. Who's the next one?”He pulled out another name, “Alice Thatcher, Ravenclaw.”Hermione paused, “No, that won't work.”“Why not?”“Ginny told me something about Alice and Paula getting into a pretty heated argument over some guy last year.”“Seriously?” Malfoy asked sceptically. “With everything that happened last year, girls still had time to argue over boys?”Hermione shrugged, “Guess so. I just know it must have been a bad confrontation or else Ginny never would have mentioned it. So, I think it's best we don't pair those two.”He put the name back into the bowl and pulled out another one, “How about Jenny Lang? Slytherin.”“Sure,” Hermione said, writing it down. They continued picking names until they had a list of 36 pairs. After that it was easy enough to put everyone into a time slot on the schedule Malfoy had made. Hermione sat back and sighed, looking at the schedule. The bowl had turned back into a pillow when the last name had been drawn, but it was still resting on her knees. Malfoy was still massaging her feet, though she suddenly realized his hands were working on her lower legs too. How long had he been doing that? Now that their work was done, she felt self-conscious and silly for letting him continue his massage basically the whole time they'd been working. She tried to pull her legs away and sit up, but his hands closed on her ankles.“Malfoy-”“So, how about that bubble bath?”he suggested with a smirk.“Excuse me?” she had almost forgotten his comment from earlier that afternoon. Surely he wasn't serious?“Weren't we going to deal with your obsession with me after finishing this?” he said, his voice low.Hermione sighed, she was too tired for this, “Malfoy, I am not obsessed with you. I realize you are saying that to try and get a rise out of me but it's not going to work, not this time. I'm tired and the only thing I want to do is go to bed.”A slow smile spread across his face, “We could do that too.”Hermione's stomach clenched. Did Draco Malfoy just say he wanted to take her to bed? A bath was one thing and she knew he was just teasing, but this? He sounded like he actually wanted to and he'd made it sound entirely too sensual. Which was not something she associated with Malfoy and she wasn't sure she ever wanted to. Thinking of him as a potential love interest was just too confusing, and foreign, and she was with Ron.His eyes were burning into her own. She had to get away. Forcefully, she wrenched her feet from his grasp, springing off the couch. “Goodnight, Malfoy. Thanks for your help with the schedule,” she said hastily. He started to stand up but she turned and rushed into her room, closing the door firmly behind her and locking it.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
