Chapter 6: An Adventure and a New Friend
Dumbledore stared at the stupid, stammering man in near-horror. Why did these things happen? He stood up; barely two seconds had passed since the man had fainted.
“Prefects, get your Houses back to their dorms, except Slytherin. Slytherin house, stay here in the Great Hall.” Dumbledore said, having enchanted his voice to be heard over the crowd. Quickly all the Houses emptied from the Great Hall. Cygnus and Draco sat quietly, just staring at each other and their year mates. Dumbledore and the other Professors left the Great Hall to find this troll. A couple of minutes later Cygnus realized that Hermione Granger hadn’t been at the Feast. He groaned. Draco was not going to be happy with having to save a muggle-born. But all of the Professors had gone and the Slytherin Prefect was in conversation with the other Prefects.
“Draco.” Cygnus hissed at his brother, who turned to look at him. “We have to go.”
“Go where?” Draco looked at his brother with a mix of curiosity and also like he thought his brother was crazy.
“Hermione Granger. I overheard some first-year Gryffindors saying that she was in the 1st floor lavatory and she wouldn’t come out. Weasley said something stupid to upset her.” Cygnus said in a whisper. The other first-years sitting around them overheard.
“So what?” Pansy asked derisively. “She’s just a mudblood.”
Cygnus looked up at Pansy with anger flashing in his quicksilver eyes. “Muggle-born or not she’s still a student and a witch. And if I ever hear you using that slur again I’ll wash your mouth out with soap.” Cygnus hissed at the girl. Pansy looked taken aback, and a little scared. There was a spell that parents used on their kids that would put the taste of soap in their mouths for at least a minute, and Pansy was sure that Narcissa had used it on one of the twins at one time or another. She would not allow her boys to speak any curse words in her hearing. Pansy was also sure that Cygnus had learned the spell, either from his mother, or from a journal she had in the library. Cygnus turned his glare on the other Slytherin First-Years, all of whom held up their hands in surrender. When all of them stood to leave the fifth-year Prefect, Gemma Farley, looked over at them.
“Where are the lot of you going?”
Cygnus looked at the group, smirked and answered honestly. “The lavatory.”
Gemma looked between the first years and her group of friends. “I’m trusting you lot to go there and come straight back.”
“Yes Prefect Gemma.” The twins chorused at her. The group of friends headed out of the Great Hall, wands at the ready, listening for any sounds that may reach them. They were around the corner from the Girls Lavatory when they smelled and then saw the Mountain Troll. They watched as went into the Girls Lavatory. Cygnus and Draco looked at each other and gained a determined face. Muggle-born or not they would not allow Hermione Granger to be hurt on their watch. The group followed the mountain troll. The twins immediately inside, as they heard Hermione scream shrilly.
The twins looked at the mountain troll, who had Hermione cornered, Draco immediately hollered “Hey, you giant brute!” to get its attention while Cygnus ducked down and headed for Hermione intent on getting her out.
Draco continued to insult the Troll. After a couple of minutes the troll realized it was being insulted and started bellowing. Blaise, Crabbe and Goyle ran in to help Draco, leaving the girls and Theo in the hallway. The four boys thought quickly, they didn’t know how to perform a stunner yet, so they had to do something else.
“What if we levitated, like one of the broken sinks and just hurled it at him?” Blaise suggested, and the other three agreed. The boys each selected a different target, said the necessary spell and threw all the objects at the Troll at once. All four objects; a smashed sink, the door off one of the stalls, a smashed toilet, and a second door; hit the Troll in the head one after the other and knocked the thing unconscious.
Meanwhile Cygnus had been trying to get Hermione to quit panicking. When he heard the Troll go down he grabbed her arm, intent on dragging her out when Severus and McGonagall appeared in the door.
“What is going on here?” Severus asked in a deadly quiet voice.
The five Slytherins looked at each other and then their Head of House.
Cygnus was the one that spoke up first, “well, Professor, sir, we had to go the Lavatory and just as we were coming around the corner we saw the Troll making its way in here…”
“Yeah, and then we heard Granger scream,” Draco took over.
“And we couldn’t just leave her to possibly die at the hands of a mountain troll.” Blaise finished for the twins.
“Why were you in here and not upstairs Miss Granger?” McGonagall asked of her student before Severus had a chance to.
“I… Ron Weasley… I was hiding in here, Professor.” Hermione said in a small voice.
“Weasley was picking on her, Professor McGonagall.” Cygnus said quickly, seeing that what Hermione had said wasn’t going to get her off the hook. “We didn’t know she was still in here, honest. But some of the other first-year Gryffindor girls was talking about how Ron said something horrid about her to Seamus and she heard, so she ran in here to hide from the…” Cygnus trailed off, not wanting to get in trouble for calling the red-haired arse an arse. McGonagall looked horrified. No one had had the chance to do a headcount on the students before the Troll thing had started and she hadn’t even known one of her students was in here.
“20 points, each, to you five for your quick thinking and attempting to get another student out of harm’s way.” Severus said calmly. He then ushered his students out of the Girls Lavatory and back to the Great Hall. Severus gestured for the students to enter the Hall, but stopped Cygnus. “Go on ahead Draco; your brother will join you in a minute.” Severus said to one of his favorite students. Draco nodded and followed his year mates. Severus pulled Cygnus into an empty classroom and sat on a desk, gesturing for Cygnus to do the same. “I want to understand what made you decide to go after Miss Granger.” Severus said softly to Harry Potter aka Cygnus Malfoy.
“She’s a student here, like me, and she’s a witch. A really good witch. And I didn’t want her to get hurt because she didn’t know about the troll and it seemed like everyone else had forgotten her in the panic.” Cygnus said calmly, watching his Godfather for any hint that he was upset.
Severus simply nodded. “I understand Cygnus. Just be careful about friending Gryffindors and muggle-borns.”
“Muggle-borns aren’t really any different from us.” Cygnus said in defense of his beliefs. “They just don’t know about all of our customs and rules and stuff. And a lot of the pure-bloods don’t help because they just sneer at them and don’t help them learn at all.”
“I know that, Cygnus. But your classmates won’t appreciate you suddenly getting on with a Muggle-born and I don’t want to see you having trouble because you’re a kind-hearted person.”
“They wouldn’t dare. I haven’t let them pick on Neville all year and no one has once said anything negative to me about it.” Cygnus said, a haughty smirk on his face.
Severus just shook his head, a small smile in his eyes, though his face remained neutral. “Head back to the Great Hall. Slytherin House should be headed back to their common room in just a minute.”
Cygnus hurried out of the room. He wouldn’t let go of his beliefs just because they didn’t quite fit in with Slytherin’s standard of things.
“So… Is the Muggle-Born our friend now, too?” Draco asked his brother when Cygnus caught up with the Slytherins just as they were leaving the Great Hall, carefully keeping his face neutral.
Cygnus sighed, “Muggle-borns aren’t so bad, you know. Look at her, no magical upbringing or anything, and she’s the toughest competition we have outside our own House for first in every class. Besides, if we could get her to understand the way things work in our world, from a Pure-bloods stance, she might not be so bad."
Draco groaned. "That sounds like work…" He dropped his head to the table.
Cygnus rolled his eyes and poked his side to get him to behave. "Besides. It wouldn't be a bad thing to have a potentially strong and powerful witch be our friend."
Draco sighed and sat up again, surreptitiously fixing his mussed hair.
Cygnus, Draco, and their group began to hold their study sessions in the library and Cygnus made a point of inviting the frizzy-haired witch to their study groups. At first the other Slytherins were aloof with the Muggle-born. But by the time the Christmas Holidays rolled around she understood a lot of Pureblood culture and customs, and was getting along with the other Slytherins more comfortably.
For Cygnus it was a treat to see. He had orchestrated the whole thing, and to see Slytherins getting along with a Gryffindor just because Cygnus (the youngest member of the Malfoy Clan) had pushed for it. Cygnus wondered if it was because his family was the strongest of the Pureblood families left, or if it was just because they were friends.
Cygnus and Draco were all packed and ready to go back to Malfoy Manor. Cygnus had asked permission from Lucius for Hermione to join them over the New Year’s celebration so that they could show her some of the Pureblood customs. Lucius had agreed after pondering it for a few days.
Cygnus found Hermione at Breakfast to let her know. He sat down on the bench beside her.
“Hermione, we’re having a party for the Yule and for New Year’s and we want you to come join us. It’ll give you a chance to witness some old Pureblood customs.”
Hermione’s face showed ecstatic joy. And then she paused. “But how will I get there?”
“We’ll send an elf to come bring you to the Manor.” Cygnus said dismissively.
“Okay.” Hermione smiled.
Cygnus showed Hermione one of his rare smiles and then darted back to the other side of the Great Hall to finish his Breakfast.
Hermione couldn’t stop smiling. She felt so lucky that she would get to witness old Pureblood customs in person. Cygnus had quietly been tutoring her in how to behave around the Purebloods and she was able to adopt the same neutral expression that all the other Purebloods wore on a constant basis. Only when she was over-excited did her emotions show. She had also quit jumping up and answering every question a Professor asked. She still got the highest marks out of the Gryffindors in all classes, although she still fell below the Malfoy twins.
Ron was about halfway down the table and he openly glared at Cygnus when he came to sit at the Gryffindor table. He grumbled about ‘slimy snakes’ to Dean, who also watched Cygnus, though not with open hostility in his eyes.
Dean was kind of jealous that Hermione had gotten in with the Purebloods and was learning to fit in better. He thought about going to Hermione and asking her to teach him some of the things that Cygnus had taught her.
Dumbledore watched all of this with a suspicion in his mind. After the students had departed for the train station, all except those staying behind for the holiday break; he called Severus to his office.
“You wanted to see me Headmaster?” Severus said as he walked into the office, his eyebrow raised.
“Cygnus Malfoy is one of your godsons; can you tell me about the boy?” Dumbledore said, gesturing for Severus to sit.
“He’s a sweet, caring boy. He enjoys making a variety of friends, and learning new things. From spells, to Herbology, to flying…” Severus said, trailing off a little. “Why do you have the interest Albus?”
“He’s a Malfoy, his behavior doesn’t fit in with what I’ve seen of Malfoys over the years.” Dumbledore said.
“He takes after his mother in her caring nature, and also a bit like his cousin Sirius.” Severus responded.
“I’m sure you’re right, my dear boy. I will put this matter from my mind.” Dumbledore said, with a twinkle in his eye and a smile.
Severus nodded, though he would do anything to keep Dumbledore from learning his secret. “Cygnus may be on to something. The Muggleborns should probably take a class on Pureblood customs. Also the half-bloods that weren’t raised in the Magical community.”
“I will bear that in mind, Severus. Perhaps next year we can incorporate something.” Dumbledore said.
Severus said no more, and left the Headmasters office. He would wait until he visited over Christmas to tell Lucius that Dumbledore was suspicious of Cygnus. There was nothing they could really do to change the boy’s personality, though. Severus sighed as he settled in to grade the last papers of term.
Once again the group was split between two compartments, with everyone switching back and forth as they wanted to discuss something with so-and-so. The only difference this time was that Hermione Granger was also in their compartments. The girls were in one compartment and the boys were in another. And once when Cygnus went over to the girls’ compartment he immediately came back with wide eyes.
“They were talking about clothes!” Cygnus said with horror in his voice.
Draco, Theo, and Blaise started laughing. It was a horror of horrors when they were subjected to talks about shopping, current fashions, and similar topics by the girls.
The trip to Platform 9 ¾ seemed to take half the time the trip to Hogsmeade had taken. The friends disembarked with promises to meet up at the Yule Party and again at the New Year’s party.
Cygnus and Draco went over to their parents, who had Wipsy waiting with them. Wipsy bowed to the boys and then took their trunks to the Manor.
“Draco, Cygnus.” Narcissa gave the boys a small, warm smile, but didn’t hug either of the boys as she wanted to. Lucius simply nodded at both boys, who solemnly nodded back.
The two adults led the twins to the Apparition point and then side-along Apparated them back to Malfoy Manor. Narcissa hugged her boys as soon as they were at the Manor.
“Lunch will be served in about ten minutes. Why don’t you go ahead and dress more comfortably.” Narcissa said, smiling at the boys.
The boys hugged their mom back, and then ran upstairs to their rooms to get changed. They were happy to have the three weeks at home, and they would see their friends at the Yule party as well as at the New Year’s party. Plus all the Pureblood children would wander between everyone’s houses throughout the Holidays.
A/N: Alright, there’s your adventure!
Also a little Dumbledore Suspicion. He had to get suspicious sometime.
Anyways. Next chapter will be the Holidays. All three weeks of them.
Please R/R!
Starr: I follow the books. Not the movies. The movies aren't true to the story in my mind. Thanks for reviewing so often.
Atymer: I didn't want to change Draco's personality too much. Him being a git is what makes him, well Draco. And here's your adventure. I hope to hear more of your thoughts as the story progresses.
