Chapter Six: I Miss You
Scorpius knocked on Al’s door and waited. The last of the light of the day was fading away and he just needed to talk to someone that understood. Someone that knew something about what was going on who wasn’t Rose Bloody Weasley who made his head hurt so damn bad.
Al answered the door and knew immediately something was wrong. “What is it?”
“I worked with Rose today.” Scorpius told him. Al looked back into the house.
“Give me a minute. We’ll go get a drink.” He shut the door and Scorpius knew he was going to tell his wife that he was going out. Lizzie was nearly eight months pregnant with their first child. He couldn’t help but wonder if Rose would have been pregnant by now if they had stayed together. Realistically they probably would have waited until she made Unspeakable, so probably not. Maybe they would be trying now.
The door swung open again and Al pulled a jacket on as they started walking. There was a pub a couple blocks over from Al’s house that they visited whenever Scorpius was in town. They didn’t need to decide where to go, they both knew. Al shoved his hands in his pockets. “So you saw her?”
“Saw her?” Scorpius shook his head. “The minute we got into her office alone it was like the last five years hadn’t happened.”
“Did you shag her?” Al looked incredulous.
“NO! I hugged her. She tried to kiss me and I just couldn’t. I can’t go back to that.”
“No you can’t. You deserve better than that. Rose deserves better than that. She can’t just hope to shag you and be in love with you in secret and pretend like everything's okay.”
“She asked me if there was anyone else. It was like she was desperate to know that I’m still pining after her. Al, it’s so hard. It literally felt like it hadn’t been a single day. I don’t know if I can do this.”
“You can do this. Look, I’ll talk to her if you want me to. She was probably just caught off guard. I’m sure she doesn’t want to hurt you.”
“Well she might now. She stole my case and I kind of overreacted.”
“Stole your case?”
“Yea, Department of Mysteries apparently can do that. We may have gotten into it and I may have basically told her she had no right being in a department that studies love.”
“Ouch, Scorp.”
“Yea, I might have been an asshole.” He sighed at the memory of Rose’s face and the way her voice had cracked when she said his name as he left.
“Maybe you should dial it back a little.”
“She brings out the worst in me. We have no business being together.”
“That isn’t true. People fight. Especially people who care about each other. Lizzie and I have a row every other day about the dumbest things. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be together.”
“But, how can she say she ever cared about me when she wouldn’t tell a single person that she loved me? Is that really love at all?”
“You’re being unfair now. You know what you two had was real. You know it, and I’m sorry Scor, but you let her keep it secret that long.”
Scorpius stopped walking, brushing his hands through his hair. “Al, I’m so messed up over this. This is why I left. I couldn’t be with her, working with her, seeing her everyday, knowing that we still felt the way we did. The last six months at Hogwarts was hell. I had to get away, but it seems like I didn’t stay away long enough.”
“Maybe the answer isn’t staying away Scorpius. It hasn’t done anyone any good. You love her. I know you do, and I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Rose doesn’t really have a life. I wonder why that is? Maybe because she loves you two and you’re both dumb and pining over each other.”
“Woah, I didn’t make this decision.”
Albus put a hand up. “No, you just be quiet and stand there and listen! Maybe it’s time to grow up and go tell her to grow up! It’s time for her to stop being fifteen years old and scared of what Ron Weasley thinks about her life and her decisions. Maybe it’s time for you to take things into your own hands and stop running away. Maybe it’s time to grow a pair and have a real conversation with her where you lay it all on the table.”
“You’re a prick.”
“I’m right.”
Scorpius looked over at the pub and suddenly he just wanted to be alone. “I’m going to go home. I’m not in the mood for a drink.”
“Scorpius, look, I’m sorry. I was harsh, I just, I’m tired of seeing two people I love be so fucking miserable for no reason.”
“No, Al. Don’t apologize. You’re right.”
“Look, why don’t you go home and get some sleep. You’ve been up all night and day. You will think a lot more clearly after you’ve rested.”
“You’re right.”
“Don’t do anything until you get some sleep. Promise?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t run away again, Scorpius. She isn’t the only person around here that cares about you.”
"I know. I won't. I'll see you tomorrow. Go home to your wife."
Scorpius left Al and wandered down the street until he found a safe place to apparate home. Home these days was a small cottage in a Muggle village not far from London. It was cozy and quiet, the kind of place he had imagined moving with Rose. He shook his head, trying to shake her out of it, but knowing that was impossible. He was still so in love with her. He'd restrained himself today but he was pretty sure that restraint wouldn't last long and if she wanted him to keep being her dirty little secret, he knew eventually he would probably do it. It would kill him all over again, but he would do it.
He went into his kitchen and opened a beer. He needed something to calm him down before he tried to get to sleep. The sun had set entirely by the time he fell into his couch. He couldn't stop thinking about her. He hadn't been this messed up over her in a long time. She was always there in the background, but she hadn’t been the focus of his thoughts like this in years. He supposed this was to be expected having been alone with her the very first day he unexpectedly had to work with her.
He had thought she would be over him, so that he would be the only one struggling, but it seemed that was not the case. From the way she looked at him and her interest in whether or not he had found anyone else, he was pretty sure she still wanted him just as badly as he wanted her. How were they going to deal with that? It hadn't worked at Hogwarts and he was pretty sure it wasn't going to work with them both working just floors apart from each other.
He hated thinking about that time, the time after she turned down his proposal and decided she was never going to tell her dad. That horrible, miserable time when he was with her nearly every day and they were desperately trying not to be in love anymore.
They still had rounds together three times a week. It was the worst of it. Even the Prefects meetings were better than rounds, because the Prefects were there. During rounds it was just the two of them. For two years they had snogged like crazy during their rounds, finding the best hiding spots to stop for 5, 10, 15 minutes and kiss until they couldn't think straight.
Going from that to nothing was nearly impossible. Al had told him to go to McGonagall and request a change in the schedule, but she wasn't likely to grant that at this point in the year without a decent reason and he definitely wasn't going to tell her the truth. So, that left him stuck with Rose walking around the empty castle and grounds for an hour three times a week.
It was March and they had been doing it for two and a half months already. He just needed to get to June and he would be golden. They started in the castle. It was silent as they walked the halls trying to stay together, but separate at the same time. He could tell she was having a rough time today and he couldn't figure out why. She seemed upset about something and he wanted to know what it was, but he didn't feel like he should ask, so he just walked ahead of her and tried to ignore it.
Everywhere they went they walked past places they had hidden to snog or even a few where they had done much more than snog. His heart would race and his palms would itch as he tried to we walk past these places as quickly as he could, listening to her steps behind him.
They were by the potions room when she stopped walking. He thought about leaving her there, but that was technically not allowed. He stopped also and turned around. She was staring at him, a pained expression clouding her face.
"Scor..." She spoke so softly he barely heard her.
"Yes?"
"I ... I miss you so much." She told him, tears forming in her eyes. "I hate this."
"What do you want me to do Rose?"
"I don't know."
"You didn't want to be with me anymore."
"That isn't true! I love you!"
"No, Rose. I love you and I wanted the whole world to know. I wanted everyone to know that you are mine and that nobody else is ever going to love you the way I do. You are just a scared little girl who can't bear telling Daddy that she likes someone he might disapprove of."
She took two quick steps toward him and slapped him across the face. He crashed into her, claiming her mouth with his, pushing her against the wall. His face stung where her hand had collided with him and his entire body was buzzing from being close to her again. She let out a yelp of surprise and then melted into him in that old familiar way as they became a mess of hands trying to feel as much as they could.
"Dammit, Rose. Why couldn't you just keep your mouth shut?"
‘Because I love you, and I can't stand this." There were salty tears streaming down her face.
"Are you going to tell him?" For a single moment he let her get his hopes up.
"I can't."
"Then nothing has changed." He let go of her and started quickly down the hall. "Don't follow me "
She hadn't told him that she loved him or missed him after that but she still stared at him with sad, lost eyes and it killed him. The only way he got through it was by counting the days until he would be out of Hogwarts and leaving to start his new job far away from Rose Weasley.
Being here without a countdown, seeing her, knowing how close she was ...
He already wanted to get up and go find her, tell her he was an idiot for staying away so long, and of course it didn't matter if she didn't want to tell anyone ever, because that was completely normal and healthy. He would lie through his teeth and then he would make love to her for the first time in five years and he would hate himself for it.
It would be so easy, and after today he thought she probably would welcome him back, unless he had hurt her too badly with his comments. Even then he could probably apologize his way out of that. It would be so easy to go, but he didn't. Instead, he stood up, put his empty bottle in the trash, and went to bed where he would surely dream about her.
