An afternoon with the girls
RPOV
He turned towards the door and froze. Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy walked in with their son in tow. He dimly remembered one of the early letters, where Lucius said he had a child and named him Draco.
“Severus? Oh my, Lucius, look! It is Severus!” Narcissa called out at seeing him, before rushing over and enveloping him in a dainty hug. He hugged her back, albeit a bit awkwardly, before turning to Lucius.
“So it is. Decided to grace us with your presence again, Sev?” the blond man said, before grabbing his proferred hand and pulling him into a brief, but fierce hug. When he and Regulus had hashed out their plans, Lucius had gotten wind of it. In the end, the blond aristocrat had kept them from being found out by the Dark lord and risked his life.
“Indeed I have.” He drawled back, “I was called back because of some interesting rumours flying around. Tell me, Lucy, is it true?”
“Cryptic, as always. But if it is what I think you are saying, then yes, they are rumours, but the truth? I do not know. Time will tell. Though, if rumours brought you back, I will not complain. You have been gone too long. We have missed you.”
Russel nodded at that and finally turned towards the child. He was a copy of his father, with the same grey eyes and blond hair and a distinct air of superiority.
“And you must be Draco. I can’t say it’s a pleasure to meet you, since I do not particularly like children that aren’t my own.” He snarled at the boy, seeing no use in being too nice to the kid. He might have to teach and it would do no good to be too familiar.
“What…yes, I am Draco.” The boy answered thrown off guard. He heard Narcissa giggle and Lucius grinned at his son’s discomfort.
“Our Draco is quite the handsome and accomplished young man, I will tell you, Sevy. You shall not be disappointed by his potion making, at the very least.” Narcissa said. He was going to answer, but then his daughters came back out from their fitting and bounced over to where they were standing.
“We are done, Dad.” Hannah exclaimed.
“Good. Girls, may I introduce? These are old friends of mine, the Malfoys. This is Lucius Malfoy and his wife, Narcissa Malfoy. The young man is their son, Draco Malfoy. Friends, these are my daughters Hannah and Deborah.” He made the introductions, eyeing the boy who seemed star-struck by his daughters. They curtsied to the Malfoys, making Narcissa gush over them. Lucius just stared at them in fascination.
“Oh, what pretty young ladies you are. And so well mannered! I see, your father has done everything right. And those dresses, they are quite lovely. My, Sevy, they are adorable!” Narcissa exclaimed.
“I do have to say, Sev, these young ladies are way to pretty to be your daughters. How your ugly mutt could ever produce such beauties is beyond me.” Lucius said with a wink for his daughters. They just smiled brightly at him and thanked him in unison. Lucius blinked at that display, before bursting into laughter.
“Alas, they are truly yours. They are quite the Slytherins, if I dare say so.” The blond man chuckled. Hannah and Deborah looked at each other, before shrugging their shoulders.
“It is never wrong to make a good impression, right? And we do have real manners, after all.” Deborah said, making all of them snort. Finally, they looked at Draco, making the boy blush a bit.
“how about you guys talk a bit?” Narcissa said, “I am sure you have questions about Hogwarts and Draco would be happy to tell you everything, right, Draco?”
The boy nodded and said his hello, before his daughters dragged him off a bit farther away, asking him everything about Hogwarts.
“They really are pretty, I must say. I take it an arranged marriage…”
“Don’t. You want one of my daughters in your family? Your son has to do it the proper way: by courting her. If she doesn’t choose him, it is over.” he interrupted Narcissa. She sighed and smiled at him.
“I thought you would say that. I am curious, however, where your boys are? In your letters you talked about four children. And of course I would love to meet your wife. She must be extraordinarily beautiful, judging by your daughter’s looks.”
“At this moment there are still in the States, packing everything up. They will be here by tomorrow. If my wife agrees, we can set something up.”
“Oh, letting your wife decide whom to associate with?” Lucius drawled, ignoring the dirty look Narcissa shot him, Russel grinned, knowing how that was going to play out at home.
“Certainly, my dear. I appreciate a happy home-life. I will leave the macho or pureblood stuff to you, while I will have a satisfied wife at home.” He answered. Narcissa laughed at that, stepping closer and hugging him again.
“Well, that is a smart attitude, Sevy. We will leave you to keep on shopping with your daughters and I will owl you tomorrow. I take it you are staying at The Leaky Cauldron?”
“Yes, I am. I will look forward to your owl. Have a nice day.” He answered, exchanging more prolonged goodbyes with Lucius and collecting his daughters. They had left Malfoy Jr. blushing and breathless.
They left the shop and continued on, shopping to their hearts content. He thought about putting off buying them broomsticks and familiars until the boys were here, but then figured he could let the girls choose first. That way he would only have two teenagers at one time instead of four in a broomstick store. And on another note, the boys wouldn’t try to get the girls to buy ‘manly’ pets or broomsticks. He had done that once and regretted it ever since. Two crying girls with two chuckling boys chasing them had been terror.
“Girls, do you want new broomsticks?” he asked them, already knowing their reaction, but wanting to see it anyway.
“Broomsticks? Yesyesyes!” Hannah squealed, drawing curious glances from the people around them.
“Thank you Daddy, thankyouthankyou!” she went on, giving him a hug. Deborah just smiled broadly. They both went on, marching of towards the store. When they noticed he followed slower, they came back and started dragging him amongst the laughter of everyone around them.
At the store, his girls waltzed in and started perusing the broomsticks, finally deciding on the new Nimbus, but getting him to agree to get them customized. They would have some pretty etchings on them and their smiles made it worthwhile. He noted some of the children milling in the store give his daughters surreptious glances and staring in envy when they showed the owner where and what they wanted on the broomsticks. He sighed quietly and looked for a broom for himself. Where the children and youngsters jumped on the newest offers, Severus knew that this store held custom or handmade brooms, that might not be as fast as the Nimbus, but had other, better qualities, at least for him. His daughters were finished before him, but he didn’t mind. They helped him choose a black on black broom, made out of ebony. It was heavier than the Nimbus, but considering his height and weight more stable than a Nimbus.
“Will we have a place to fly them, Daddy?” Deborah asked on their way out, stumbling over the last steps. Russel reached out to catch her, but was proceeded by a tall, black haired male. When looking up, he recognized Sirius Black and felt a sneer start on his face.
“oh, thank you, sir!” Deborah said while smiling up at the man. Sirius blinked down at his daughter before looking at Russel.
“You are welcome. And hello again, Severus. It’s good to see you again.” Sirius said, moving out of the way and letting all of them step out of the store.
“Sirius.” He answered, nodding to him and starting to move away. This is why he had loathed the thought of Diagon Alley. To many people that knew and remembered him.
“Wait. You are staying at the Leaky Cauldron and I just wanted to tell you that I am the current owner. If there is anything you need, please tell me. “ Sirius said, sincerity ringing in every word. Russel felt his temper rise and started counting to ten in his head, before turning towards the other man.
“The first thing you could do for me is keep the Potters away. If you haven’t been to your hotel today, then you might not know and I would rather not talk about this in the middle of the street.” He answered between clenched teeth, before signalling his daughters to move along. Knowing their fathers temper, the quickly started walking, while he followed behind them, not daring to look back for he was afraid he would hex the man.
“Are you alright, Dad?” Hannah asked hesitantly when they had stopped in front of the Magical Menagerie, where he wanted the girls to choose their familiars from.
He gave a big, gutsy sigh, before looking at his girls and tried a rather crooked smile.
“Diagon Alley and Hogwarts are not good places for me, pumpkin. They hold bad memories and I can’t seem to distinguish between the past and the present. It will get better, I promise.” He and Belle had always answered their children in complete honesty and he wasn’t going to stop now. But from the looks on their faces, he knew they didn’t truly believe him, but that was fine as well.
“Go on in. I think the owner is getting nervous, seeing us stand in front of his windows.” He said after a few moments of scrutiny from his daughters. And he was right, the old man was looking at them through the window and scrunching up his face. He glared back and then ushered his charges inside, getting mentally prepared for the squeals and laughter that would follow.
Sirius Black POV
Sirius watched Severus Snape walk away from him, with two Teenagers in tow. From the looks of the one he saved from falling down, they must be his daughters. The nose was unmistakable. He felt a pang of envy deep in his chest. Even Severus Snape had a family.
He shook himself out of his reverie and turned around to walk back to his hotel. The disgust he felt in the pit of his stomach because of his vile thoughts towards soured his day anyway. Who thought that one day Severus Snape would have a family before him and that he would have two such pretty girls. He asked himself what kind of woman would put up with a man like Severus. The snark, the barbs and the veiled insults were nothing to the moodiness he remembered from him.
Oh, well, he thought, he deserves happiness after what we put him through.
Sirius could well remember the boy he used to be. Selfish and self-absorbed, not to mention how thoughtless and cruel he had been. When he remembered how he had sent Severus after Remus during a full moon… The bile rose in his throat and he stopped in front of Flourish and Blotts, to take a deep breath. Whatever people thought about James Potter back then and now, there was one unmistakable truth about him: He was courageous and fair-minded when push came to shove. If it hadn’t been for James, he would have blood on his hands today. It had taken Clarissa dying to show him how useless he had been most of his life. Lusting after his best friend’s wife, even going so far as to show up on her doorstep before the wedding. Sirius Black had a lot to atone for in his life. And while Lily had forgiven him and decided to put what happened behind her, there was still one person he had to make it up to and that was Severus Snape.
Sirius walked on towards the entrance to Diagon Alley, pushing his fists into the pockets of his slacks, deep in thought.
