Chapter Six-A Lecture to Remember
The next morning Ron, Harry and Hermione had History of Magic class with Professor Binns. Dorothy followed Hermione everywhere, so all four sat together at a large table in the back of the class. It was only a short time before Ron and Harry lost interest in Binns’ long-winded ramblings and started playing with each other under the table. However, Hermione was diligently taking notes, and Dorothy was paying particularly close attention to the lecture.
Dot liked to pay attention in the History of Magic class because when Binns wasn’t droning on about some Goblin rebellion, his lectures actually helped her to understand the magical world a little better. That day he was floating around the room (Professor Binns was a ghost after all), talking about dark wizards in recent history. Everyone in school knew who Lord Voldermort was, Hermione had told Dot about Harry’s past and how Voldemort had terrorized England before his downfall.
“But there have been many dark wizards throughout history, other than He-who-must-not-be-named,” Binns went on, “some very great ones, even in your lifetimes. Is anyone here familiar with name Ephelba?” The class sat quietly, not even Hermione raised her hand. Binns let out a chuckle, “Not surprising, few books call her by her real name. Then, perhaps some of you have heard stories of the Witch of the West.”
Some students whispered, others laughed and a few looked confused.
“She’s just a fairytale, everyone knows that,” Saemus blurted out, “to keep children behaving.” He assumed a spooky tone, “Watch out for the Wicked Witch of the West, she’ll get you if you don’t eat your peas.” Everyone laughed, except Hermione. She raised her voice above the noise.
“Professor, please,” she started, “the Witch of the West is real.” This quieted the other students and she went on. “I remember reading about her in A History of Modern European Witches, though there wasn’t much information. Apparently she was quite brilliant with potions, but also the dark arts. When You-Know-Who came to power she disappeared.”
“Quite right, Miss Granger, five points to Gryfinndor,” Professors Binns proclaimed, “but you only have part of the story.”
By this time everyone was paying close attention, even Ron and Harry, and Dorothy was completely enthralled.
Binns continued, “Ephelba was a very talented French witch who attended Beauxbatons academy twenty years ago. She was known as a smart and talented girl, very good with potions and one of the best on a broom. Ephelba seemed to have a bright future, but looks were deceiving. One evening Ephelba and her beautiful roommate, Glinda, were heard arguing loudly in their dormitory. The next morning when a friend came to check on them, she found that Ephelba had poisoned both Glinda and herself. Glinda was dead and Ephelba was disfigured by the potion’s effects.” Professor Binns paused for dramatic effect, enjoying the unusually devoted attention he was receiving from his students. Then, he finished quickly, “Ephelba fled from her crime, somewhere to the north, many think to Norway. She was one of the first to join You-Know-Who’s ranks and has been known as the Witch of the West or, in children’s stories, as the Wicked Witch of the West since.” The room sat in silence for a few moments while the young witches and wizards, many of whom had been raised on stories of the Wicked Witch, contemplated the fact that she was not only real, but also probably alive. “Well that’s all for today,” Finished Binns, and the students packed up their books and left.
“I still don’t think she’s real,” said Ron confidently. “I mean, Mum’s been tellin’ me stories about her all my life: like how she has green skin and a long, crooked nose and how an army of flying monkeys follows her everywhere. I don’t believe it.”
“Whether you believe it or not doesn’t change the fact that’s its true!” interjected Hermione. “A professor wouldn’t tell us all that if it wasn’t true, especially not Binns.”
The four friends walked up to the Gryfinndor common room, excitedly discussing the Witch of the West.
“Fortuna Major” said Harry and the portrait of the fat lady swung to the side. With an open period ahead of them, the four teens had every intention to manifest a new version of last night’s bath fun in the dormitories, but when they got up to Harry and Ron’s room they found a note on Harry’s bed. It was addressed to all four of them and was written in the unmistakable, long, elegant handwriting of Dumbledore.
