Hermione looked at herself in the mirror one last time. In one hour she would be married to Snape and move in with him in his quarters. This was going to be the last time she looked at herself as Hermione Granger. It felt as if this was the moment she was leaving her childhood behind, finally becoming a woman.
Ginny had helped her with her hair and makeup, which Hermione was endlessly thankful for. Ginny had a way with cosmetics that Hermione was deeply in awe of. The makeup had taken 40 minutes, and yet there were only small, subtle changes that seemed to make all the difference in the world. Her high cheekbones were more dominant, her green eyes shone and the freckles she had gotten from the sun were almost completely gone. But what fascinated Hermione the most was her lips; Ginny had somehow made them look fuller and darker, without using lipgloss och anything.
The hair had taken Ginny almost a full hour. Her hair was now braided back in a full bun at the back of her neck. Ginny had had to magically lengthen Hermione’s hair for it to work but it had been worth it. She looked magnificent. The bun was decorated with tiny, white pearls that matched her dress.
The dress was also Ginny’s work, despite great protest from mrs. Weasley. She thought that the dress should have been more traditional. But, as Ginny had pointed out, this wasn’t exactly going to be a traditional wedding.
It was white, strapless and nearly skin tight, reaching down to just above her knees. Over the dress, she wore a thin, white, seethrough shirt that reached all the way down to her feet. The silver high heels with straps concluded the outfit, and made her legs go on forever. All in all, Hermione felt quite good about herself. She almost felt beautiful. Classy and sexy at the same time.
She took a deep breath and turned away from the mirror. She was in Harry and hers common room, alone. Harry was waiting for her outside to take her to professor McGonagall’s office, where the ceremony would take place. She had asked Harry to give her away since, at the end of the day, his approval and support meant a lot to her. Maybe more than anyone's.
When Hermione came out Harry was leaning casually against the opposite stone wall. He was wearing a black suit, a white shirt and a black tie. Simple, but formal. She smiled at him as he came to meet her, arms outstretched.
“Hermione, you look beautiful.”
“Thanks, Harry. You look quite smart youself. Did you do something with your hair?”
Harry touched his hair self consciously and blushed.
“Ginny convinced me to cut it short. I don’t know though, is it too short?”
Hermione smiled and touched his hair lovingly. It really suited him.
“It looks great. It makes you look older and wiser.”
He laughed and put an arm around her shoulders.
“So, are you ready to go, madam Snape? Your groom awaits.”
“Ha ha, Harry. Really funny.”
Ginny and mrs. Weasley had really worked fast with the decorations. When Hermione and Harry walked into professor McGonagall’s office it was barely recognizable. The big desk in the center of the room had been removed and replaced with a white altar. The sides of the circular room were decorated with white and light pink roses, that made the air smell like summer. Everyone was already there; Ginny, mr and mrs. Weasley, Remus, Teddy and Mcgonagall. And of course, Snape. Everything stopped when Hermione and Harry walked into the room. Hermione had never been in a situation when all eyes were on her before. It made her appreciate what Harry was going through every day all the more.
“Alright, I’m here”, Hermione said nervously, trying to lighten the mood. “Ready for a wedding and stuff.”
Mrs. Weasley ran up to her, giving her a tight hug that brought tears to Hermione’s eyes. When was the last time her own mother had hugged her like that?
“Oh, you look wonderful, dear. Ginny was right, the dress is a perfect fit. How are you? Are you nervous?”
Mrs. Weasley was talking so fast that Hermione barely heard a word of what was whispered in her ear.
“I’m fine, thank you mrs. Weasley.”
Mrs. Weasley then let go of her and started shouting to the people around the room, giving them orders where to stand and to correct flowers here or there, while she led Hermione up to the altar where Snape was already standing. He was wearing a black dress robe that hung loosely from his shoulders, and a light blue shirt under it. It was probably the first time Hermione had ever seen him wear colours. He had also tied his hair back, as he did that day they went to London.
“Harry”, mrs. Weasley shouted out in the room, nearly deafening Hermione in the process.
“Yes, mrs. Weasley?”
“Aren’t you giving Hermione away?”
“Yes, I am, mrs. Weasley.”
“Then what are you doing standing there? Get over here, boy.”
“Yes, mrs. Weasley.”
Harry ran over to stand between Hermione and Snape, and Hermione gave him a mocking look. Harry glared back at her, mouthing words under his breath.
“Arthur, if you would be so kind and start the ceremony?” mrs. Weasley said to her husband, while fanning herself with a napkin. “It is a school night, after all, and it’s already getting late. The kids need to go to bed soon.”
Suddenly Ginny burst forward, her fire red hair in curls around her angry face.
“Mum, the only one here who is underage is Teddy, and Teddy is asleep.”
“Yes, well, then maybe you should speak in softer tones so you don’t wake him up …”
“Actually …” Remus said and stepped forward with a sleeping Teddy in his arms. Teddy was wearing a pair of fluffy earmuffs that almost completely covered his face. “I don’t think Graup could wake this one up at the moment.”
Professor McGonagall stepped forward and put a hand on Ginny’s arm, patting it carefully.
“You know, miss Weasley, I agree with your mother. It is a school night and it’s already after curfew. What kind of headmistress would I be if I allow students out of bed this late, no matter the occasion?”
“The kind of headmistress who allow a teacher to marry his student?”
The silence that hung over the crowd was thick with tension, as everyone turned to Snape, who was standing there next to Hermione and Harry with a smirk on his face. McGonagall somehow looked sad and about ready to kill Snape at the same time. Mrs. Weasley just looked incredibly uncomfortable, and Remus was trying to move away from the crowd without being noticed.
Hermione burst out laughing. It was all so ridiculous she couldn’t believe it was happening. And to think that only one week ago she had been in Australia, happily unaware of what a freakshow her life was turning into.
She carefully wiped away her tears with the tip of her finger and took deep, shaky breaths, still giggling softly.
“I think we should just begin”, mrs. Weasley whispered to mr. Weasley who was standing at the altar, still prepared to hold the ceremony.
“I agree”, Snape drawled next to Hermione. “Let’s get this over with.”
Everyone nodded in agreement and went back to their original places. Harry picked up Hermione’s hand and placed it in Snape’s, then quietly stood to the side. Hermione could hear her pulse banging loudly in her ears. She was holding Snape’s hand again and it was just as large and warm and smooth as she remembered and …
“Dear friends”, Arthur’s voice interrupted her internal meltdown, and she placed her focus entirely on him. “I’m not going to speak about love tonight. I’m going to speak about bonds.
“It’s been a difficult few years. Years of darkness and despair, and we are just starting to see the dawning light. For some of us it might take slightly longer, but I’m confident that brighter times are ahead of us.
“Hermione and Severus. Marriage isn’t easy. We are all friends here, so I grant it’s safe for me to say that it will be even more difficult for you since you were forced into this marriage. There will surely be some darkness ahead. But in darkness we make the most unexpected bonds. And bonds grow stronger during difficult times.
“Hermione. You are one of the most loyal people I have ever met. You are kind and honest. You make the darkness seem less dark.
“Severus. You are one of the bravest people I have ever met. You are strong and honorable. You make the darkness seem less terrifying.
“Together, I hope your combined strength will lead you to each other through the darkness.
Mr. Weasley paused for a moment.
“Hermione Jean Granger. Do you take this wizard to be your husband?”
Hermione felt like she couldn’t breath but got too much air at the same time.
“I do”, she said, surprised at how confident she sounded.
“Severus Tobias Snape. Do you take this witch to be your wife?”
“I do.”
“Please place these rings onto each others fingers to symbolize the bond you now share.”
Mr. Weasley gave them the rings. Hermione hadn’t seen them before since Snape had been in charge of the rings while she was in bedrest. It took her by surprise how beautiful they were. As she placed the ring on his finger she couldn’t help but admire the smooth dusty, silver surface. Her ring was the same, but smaller and thinner. Simple, yet beautiful. It suited both of them very well. How did Snape get such good taste?
“I now pronounce you, husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Wait, what?
Hermione had been so lost in her own thoughts that she had completely forgotten about the ceremony and the fact that she was in the middle of getting married. And now it was happening for real, because mr. Weasley just said those magic words that were going to change everything forever.
She felt a light squeeze on her hand and looked up, only to find Snape leaning down. It was happening. But she hadn’t kissed him since That night, and she had been so drunk. What if he didn’t like the kiss now? What if people could tell that they had kissed before?
Suddenly she felt a finger under her chin, tilting her head up. She had time to meet his black eyes for a second before he leaned down the rest of the way and kissed her. It was a soft and gentle kiss. Too quick for Hermione to really get into it, which was probably a good thing. During that swift kiss she already forgot that they were in a room full of people that thought that there was nothing between them.
There was awkward clapping around them, and Hermione blinked and turned away from the deep, black eyes above her. She caught Ginny’s eyes and blushed, seeing the suggestive look on her face. Then she was hauled in for hugs from all over. First Harry, then mrs. Weasley, then Ginny. She lost count but she was pretty sure that mrs. Weasley came over several times.
Finally mr. Weasley came up to them and shook Snape’s hand formally, then pulled Hermione in for a hug.
“Thank you for that beautiful speech, mr. Weasley. It was really fitting.”
“No problem at all, dear. Now all you need is to sign the papers, and it’s offical.”
He showed them to a little desk pushed to the side with a parchment on it, and a quill. The quill looked awfully familiar though.
“Wait”, Harry screamed from behind Hermione. “Wait, I recognise that quill. It’s one of those that writes in your own blood, that Umbridge used in detention. You can’t possibly mean that the ministry is actually using these?”
“Harry”, Hermione said, putting a hand on his arm. “Blood magic is a powerful tool that is often used when signing contracts to make sure you don’t break it. The quill has been used for ages in signing contracts. Umbridge just misused the privilege of having one. Can we please just get on with this?”
She bent down over the contact and quickly signed her name, feeling the burn on the back of her left hand. She put up her hand so that Harry could see her name disappearing from view. Meanwhile, Snape was writing his own signature.
“Eh, Hermione”, Harry said awkwardly. “Your name disappeared from the parchment too. You wrote … the wrong last name.”
Hermione looked down. Her spot on the contract was still empty next to Snape’s spindly handwriting. Without looking at anyone she picked up the quill again, and wrote her full name.
Hermione Jean Snape.
