Oh-oh Trouble in Paradise. Enjoy.
Ginny made her way past the portrait of Fat Lady and knocked at her friend’s door.
- “Hey Ginns, come on in” Hermione said, opening the door wider. “Can’t sleep, ha?”
- “No. I keep thinking about this weekend. I mean it was…”
- “Unbelievable?”
- “Yeah. I swear, those were probably the craziest things I have ever done in my life. Well, aside from the war that is.”
Both girls stayed quiet while Hermione changed into her night gown and crawled on the bed. – “I’d go for a cup of cocoa. You?”
- “Yeah, me too”
- “Binki” Hermione called and gave creature a warm smile, when one of Hogwarts house elves appeared in her rooms right away. “Can you please bring us two cups of cocoa from the kitchens?”
- “Of course, miss” elf said and disappeared as quickly as it came.
Within a few minutes, both of them were leaning against Hermione’s bed frame with two cups of hot cocoa in their hands and the plate of apricot jam croissants in the middle.
- “House elves here are spoiling you” Ginny said, taking a bite of warm pastry.
- “Not like Rosie spoils Lucius” Hermione giggled.
- “No, not like that. She mollycoddles that man more than my mother did with all of us. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
- “True.”
– “So what do you think happens now?” Ginny asked with a bit of sadness in her voice.
- “I wish I knew Ginns. I mean we did have a quick chat with Severus while you were in the shower.”
- “What did he say?”
- “He said that getting to know someone takes time and that if I want to do that, I should stick around.”
- “Stick around? Really?”
- “That were literally his exact words.”
- “That man” Gunny huffed.
- “What about you? What did Lucius say when you parted?”
- “Just that it’s been a lovely weekend and he enjoyed it greatly.”
- “And that’s it?”
- “Yeah, that was it.”
Both witches looked at each other and sipped their cocoa. Ginny shook her head – “Do you think it’s over?”
As if to answer her question, they heard a light tapping on the window and Hermione jumped from the bed to open it, letting in a big eagle owl. She gave the bird a piece of pastry and untied a scroll from its foot. She unfolded the paper and chuckled, looking at the Malfoy family crest at the top of it.
- “I think it’s for you” she said, giving the scroll to Ginny. “Looks like Lord Malfoy misses you already.”
Ginny smiled and red the note out loud:
“My bed is not the same without you, darling. And thinking about your sweet little fingers on my body, makes me incredibly hard all over again. I know that you’ll be busy with school work throughout the week, but I don’t think I’d be able to wait until the next weekend. Tell me if there will be any window when I can see you and I’ll arrange the rest.
L. M.”
- “I guess your question has just been answered” Hermione laughed, looking at the wide smile on her friend’s face.
Ginny took a piece of paper, quickly wrote a response and tied it to the bird’s foot. After eating another piece of pastry, owl gave her a grateful hoot and flew away.
They talked for another thirty minutes, discussing the plans for the next weekend, when they finally noticed a clock at Hermione’s bed stand.
- “I didn’t realize it has gotten so late. We only have about five hours before we’ll have to get up again. Staying?” Hermione asked, putting both of their cups and the plate with left over pastries on the coffee table.
- “If you don’t mind. Wouldn’t want to get caught for wondering around after curfew. I assume there wouldn’t be any problems with the Headmaster, but Mcgonagall is a whole other story.”
- “True”
Ginny smiled, covering both of them with a blanket. “You know I still have hard time believing it. Who could ever know that those two can be so…”
- “Cute and cuddly?” Hermione yawned and closed her eyes.
- “Yeah, cute and cuddly” Ginny said with a smile and drifted off to a peaceful sleep.
As it usually happens, morning came too soon. Hermione opened her eyes and looked at Ginny, who was rubbing her own eyes, trying hard to keep them open.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
Both witches looked at each other. – “What the hell is that, Ginns?”
- “I don’t know, but a little more of this noise and my head will explode.”
Boom. Boom. Boom.
- “I think, someone is knocking on the door.”
- “More like trying to brake it.”
Hermione slowly crawled out of bed and went to open it.
- “Harry? Draco? What’s the big idea?”
- “How else could we wake you up?”
Hermione mumbled something and opened the door wider.
They came in and jumped on the bed. Draco unceremoniously threw the blanket off of Ginny – “Get up, you sleepy head. You two missed breakfast and classes start in 15 minutes.”
Ginny rubbed her eyes again before Draco’s words finally dawned on her – “Classes? Oh shite… we overslept” she yelled, jumping off the bed. “I’m going to the shower… fuck, all my clothes are in my room.”
Draco laughed and pulled a small bag out of his pocket – “Got them right here.” He enlarged it and threw the bag to Ginny.
- “Oh my God, I could kiss you right now.”
- “Please do”
- “Prat” Ginny laughed, jumping into the shower.
- “Hold on, I’m going too” Hermione said, running after her.
- “Ooh, think we should join?” Draco said, giving Harry a playful look.
- “Have you not gotten enough today? And yesterday, and the day before?” Harry chuckled, stretching on the bed.
- “There is no such thing as enough with you.” Draco gave him a kiss and smiled, hearing his boyfriend’s pleased purr.
He grabbed a handful of Harry’s hair and pulled his head back, nipping and kissing his neck till he heard a soft moan. Harry grabbed Draco’s hand and moved it to the crotch of his hands. – “If you’re going to do something, do it properly.”
- “Hey you two, stop that.” Ginny said, stepping out of the shower and finishing to wrap herself in a towel.
- “Not my fault, he started it” Harry pouted, shifting uncomfortably to hide a growing tent in his trousers.
- “I can believe that” Ginny laughed. “Like father, like son.”
- “All right go away now, so we could get dressed and we will meet you in potions.”
- “Do we have to?”
- “Go away” both witches laughed, pushing both of them to the door.
- “Fine, fine. We’re going” Harry chuckled. Once outside the door, he turned his head back “Mione?”
- “Yes?”
He quickly unwrapped her towel and threw it away – “Here you go”
- “Aah… You prat” She squealed, shutting the door behind him.
- “That’s why I love you” Draco laughed taking Harry’s hand, as both of them made their way to the potions class.
As soon as they all settled, heavy wooden doors flew open and Severus Snape walked in the classroom in his usual intimidating manner, black robes bellowing at his feet with each step.
- “Open your books to page number four hundred ninety-five.”
- “Headmaster? What are you doing here?”
- “I don’t believe it is any of your business, Mister Malfoy.”
- “Would you tell us what happened to professor Slughorn, sir?” Harry asked, trying to sound as polite as he could.
- “Professor Slughorn is sick and will not be attending anymore, therefore I will be taking over this class till the end of the school year. Now, Mister Potter if you and Mister Malfoy are quite done with your superfluous questioning, please be kind to open your books to page four hundred and ninety-five.”
- “Bugger” Harry muttered, so only Draco cold hear him.
- “Yeah, what a joy” Draco whispered back.
Hermione gave them a playful look – “No worries, I got this. He won’t be so grouchy after I’m done with him” she whispered to Draco, leaning closer to his desk.
The next moment, she felt Headmaster’s intent gaze, his eyes narrowed, as if she just announced her last statement to the whole class. She brought her eyes up to him, smiled seductively and winked.
- “Do you have something to say, Miss Granger?”
She didn’t see a smile on his face, in fact it looked like he was going to bite her head off with the next word. She lowered her eyes, feeling confused by his reaction. – “No, professor.”
- “Let us pray that you don’t, for this class has been interrupted enough. Now, the potion we will be brewing today is called “Utque Sedatis Capturam” or, as some of you might have figured out, a calming draught. Your cutting and brewing instructions are on the board and the ingredients that you will need are on your desks. This potion should not take more than an hour to produce, however thanks to the extensive questions of your dear friends, the time to do this has been cut by ten minutes. It leaves you just enough time to make it, without sparring any of it for foolish mistakes. I suggest you start working if none of you want to get zero in today’s class.”
No one needed a second invitation after his speech and the room fell silent, apart from the cutting and stirring noises that were accustomed to the potion making.
Severus took a quick glance over the classroom before taking a seat and submerging into his own thoughts. Professor Slughorn, in his usual carefree manner, left his post at the worst possible time, making Severus take over potions again, in addition to the DADA classes that he already had. And if that wasn’t enough, he received a letter from the ministry which stated that the school will be cut off from all additional funding if the regulations are not met properly and the amount of teachers is not equal or above the amount of classes taught in the school. With war taking so many, finding competent teachers, seemed next to impossible. Cuts in budget would result getting rid of many extracurricular activities that students took over the year. It would also lead to cutting off even more of the staff, which would eventually bring the school status below average.
Severus couldn’t help thinking that the same situation would never appear if Albus was still alive. Dumbledor’s close relationship with the minister led to many positive arrangements for the school. It was after the fall of the Dark Lord and Severus’ taking over the Headmaster’s position again, that things became somewhat shaky. Even though his true loyalties to the Order were established and his name was cleared, there were still some people who thought that he was not worthy to reclaim this position. Talking to the minister would not do much, if not worsen the current situation he was in. The money, needed to maintain normal school activities, had to come from an additional source and it was up to him to figure out what source would that be.
He brought his head up to look at the clock on the wall and just in time to see that Draco and Harry switched their places and Potter now, was exchanging notes and giggles with HIS witch.
- “That will be fifty points from Gryffindor, Mister Potter.”
- “Professor…”
- “Another fifty if I hear one more word from you.”
Harry opened his mouth to retort, but Draco squeezed his hand and he thought better of it.
The rest of the class went in silence. In the end of it, everyone brought their caldrons to his desk and left quietly, in fear of more house points being deducted from ether house. Hermione gathered her bag and waived to Ginny and the boys
- “I’ll see you later, guys.”
She looked around, making sure that everyone left and came closer to his desk.
- “Hey grumpy. Whatever has gotten into you?”
Severus brought his eyes up – “I don’t remember asking you to stay after the class, Miss Granger.”
- “No you didn’t. I stayed because I wanted to find out what made you so mad. Deducting that fifty points from us was totally uncalled for.”
- “I will not be disrespected in my own class.”
- “There was no disrespect, Severus.”
- “Laughing and exchanging notes in the middle of class, is disrespectful to the professor. Comprehending that, requires more brain cells that was given to Potter by nature, but I was hoping you of all people would understand that. I am sorry to see that I was mistaken yet again.”
He saw her eyes filling with tears when she turned around and stormed out of the class without saying another word.
The rest of the day went from bad to worse. Hermione caught up with Harry and Draco in Transfigurations.
- “We’re waiting for you for twenty minutes already, what happened?”
- “Nothing… I don’t want to talk about it.”
- “What did that git say to you?” Harry asked, taking her hand into his.
- “I just wanted to talk to him and he… he was…”
- “Awful?” Harry finished the sentence for her. “What a… piece of work. Nothing will ever change him” he looked at Draco “Sorry, he’s your godfather and all…”
Draco gave him a small smile – “Well, you were talking during class.”
- “That doesn’t give him the right to be an arse to her”
- “No that does not, but if I’d be you” he turned to Hermione “I’d find out what is really bothering him. I mean he does have a lot on his shoulders these days.”
- “How can I find out anything if he says something like… something like that” she mumbled, trying not to go into the details.
Draco shrugged his shoulders – “Don’t know. You’re the one dating him, not me.”
Harry wrapped his hand around the witch – “I have no idea what you see in him.”
- “Sometimes I ask myself the same question” she said, lowering her head on Harry’s shoulder. The next thing she saw when she looked up was, two dark eyes staring at her from across the hallway. Hermione slapped a hand over her mouth – “Do you think he heard that?”
- “I don’t know.”
- “I guess you’ll have to find out later” Draco stated.
- “I didn’t mean it like that. I really hope he didn’t hear me. I need to go after him and explain.”
- “There’s nothing you can do about it now, love. Let’s go to class, Mcgonagall will not appreciate us being late and I don’t want to have more points deducted from ether one of our houses” Draco said, making his way into the classroom.
The time from that moment on went in a blur. She could hardly focus her attention on any of the questions professor Mcgonagall asked, the thoughts of him occupying her head entirely. She didn’t hear the bell and got startled, feeling professor’s hand on her shoulder.
- “Miss Granger, wake up.” She raised her eyes up to the witch.
- I’m sorry, professor. Were you asking me something?”
- “Dear girl, what has gotten into you?”
- “I… nothing, professor. I just have a lot on my mind. You know, NEWTS and all” she gave the old witch a week smile.
- “I think you’re just exhausted. You need some rest. I’ll talk to the Headmaster and ask if you can take a few days off. I believe it will do you good.”
- “Thank you professor, there’s no need for that. And I wouldn’t want to bother the Headmaster with this.”
- “Nonsense. I won’t have you falling from exhaustion in one of your classes. I’ll talk to the Headmaster today.”
- “Thank you” Hermione smiled, picking up her bag and making her way out of the classroom.
The dinner in the Great Hall came and went. He was not there. Ginny was trying to tell her something, but she was far too upset to pay attention. Finally, she felt someone tugging on her sleeve.
- “What?” she snapped. “Oh, I’m sorry Ginns. What were you saying?”
Ginny looked at her and shook her head – “You have to go and try to talk to him.”
- “I know, it’s just… what if he doesn’t want to talk to me anymore?”
- “You won’t know till you try.”
- “I feel like it’s all my fault” Harry said, looking sadly at Draco.
- “Not entirely love, but you just have to try to keep your opinions to yourself sometimes.”
- “I know, I’m sorry for that. Sorry Mione” he said, turning to his friend.
- “Yeah, me too. Ginns is right, I need to go talk to him. Can you get my stuff for me?”
- “Sure. Go, we’ll see you later.”
She got up and carefully made her way out. Her heart was pounding louder with each step she took, until she finally reached the dungeons. She gave the password to the gargoyle and knocked on the door. No answer. She knocked again. Nothing.
- “Alohomora” she whispered and watched the door crack open in front of her. She silently walked in and looked around.
It was cold inside. Fire died out some time ago and the whole place smelled of alcohol. He was sitting in the chair by the fireplace, with his eyes closed and a bottle of scotch in his hand. Another bottle was shattered in pieces by the bed of cold coals.
She came closer and put her hand on his cheek, mentally kicking herself. This whole thing was her fault.
Instantly his eyes flew open and he grabbed her hand and removed it from his face.
- “What are you doing here?” She was taken aback with the amount of anger in his voice.
- “I… I just wanted to apologize for what I said.” She was sure by now that he heard her.
- “No apologies needed, get back to your rooms.”
- “I can’t. Severus…”
- “It’s professor to you, Miss Granger.”
- “Severus, please. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean what I said in there. I… I was just upset and…”
- “I said go, before I throw you out.”
- “Please, just listen to me. I just want to talk.”
He took a deep breath, her presence was hurtful, her words from before still ringing in his ears.
- “Talk?” he said, with as much venom in his voice as he could master. “It’s not enough that you openly disrespect me in my own class, you tell Potter that you don’t even know what you saw in me in the first place and now, you come here with your lies to make me feel even worse. As long as I’m concerned, there’s nothing to talk about.”
- “I didn’t come here to lie to you. Please, you have to hear me out” she sobbed, feeling tears running down her cheeks.
- “And why would I do that, so you could run to Potter and tell him what a total bastard I am? No thanks. I’ve been listening to his opinions and taking his crap for far too long. I will not let you, or him, make a fool out of me. So. I. will. Repeat. It. One. More. Time. GET THE FUCK OUT!!!” He yelled.
She gasped from the cold, bitter sound of his voice, let out a loud cry and ran out of the room as fast as she could. She ran passed Ginny, Draco and Harry, and didn’t stop to answer any questions. Quickly giving the password to the portrait of the Fat Lady, she ran into her room and threw herself on the bed.
She didn’t hear Ginny come in and sit on the bed beside her. Red-headed witch gathered her friend in her arms and just sat there stroking her hair, until Hermione ran out of tears and her cries turned into soft sobs and hiccups.
- “Tell me what happened.”
- “I… I can’t.”
- “Yes you can. Come on, what did he tell you?”
- “He hates me, Ginns.” Hermione sobbed out. “I couldn’t keep my mouth shot and now he hates me” she dropped her head on her friend’s shoulder.
- “He doesn’t hate you. He can’t. I saw how he was looking at you.”
- “Yes he does and it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have said what I said to Harry. And I shouldn’t have teased him in the classroom. I fucked it all up and now he doesn’t want to see me anymore.”
Ginny laid her on the pillow and leaned down to give her friend a hug – “You don’t know that. He’s just mad, he might still come around.”
- “I don’t think he ever will. It’s all over. Over, before…” She sobbed few more times and fell asleep, before she could finish the sentence.
Ginny covered her with blanket and stepped out to the lobby where Harry and Draco were already waiting for her.
- “How is she?”
- “She’s a mess, but at least she’s sleeping.”
- “Is she mad at me?” Harry asked. “I’d be if I were her.”
- “She’s not mad at you, but she does seem devastated. I wish I knew how to help her. I could talk to him, but I don’t think it will do much good in this situation.”
- “There’s only one person who could talk some sense into him now” Draco said with a sheepish smile.
Ginny turned to him, her green eyes shining with hope – “Lucius.”
