The morning air felt cold on Hermione's barely covered body as she slammed the door behind her. She wished she could sink into the ground, be swallowed by the Earth and never have to think about the events of the morning again. And for the second time she couldn't move, not because of the cold but because every time she tried to convince herself to walk down the steps of Draco's house and escape, her heart hurt.
She couldn't just leave Draco, not like that. Hermione was intimidated, frightened and shaken up from the previous hour, but something inside her brain screamed at her to see Draco, and check on him, stay with him. She didn't even know where she would go if she were to leave.
Slowly the young witch turned around and pressed her ear against the door. She didn't hear anything at first, but through what the door could muffle, she again heard sobs. Her brain screamed at her to leave, to get away before he really did hurt her, but with a heart stronger than her mind, Hermione swung the door back open and walked up to Draco, who was on the kitchen floor.
"Get up" She said sternly
Draco wrenched his head around to look at her, quickly wiped his tears and stood up as if nothing was wrong. Hermione tried desperately hard not to seem intimidated by the man standing in front of her and spoke slowly
"I want to help you, Draco, but you yelled nonsense at me when I tried to understand the first time. If you truly value my help you are going to tell me why you switch between being abusive and nonchalant, why you drugged me last night, and what is going to happen after we finish this damned potion"
Both Hermione and Draco paused, they didn't break eye contact and their breaths even synched up before Draco walked over to the kitchen table motioning for Hermione to follow him. When they were both sitting down, he spoke.
"I didn't just bet my life" Draco said, trying to keep his voice from wavering.
Hermione cocked her head, confused but kept quiet as to let him explain
"I didn't just bet my life- Not in the sense that if I were not to bring the potion to this customer, he would kill me on the spot. But when we made the deal, I drank a slow acting potion that would kill me over the course of the year. And of course it isn't as easy as just making my heart stop, this potion eats away at my brain, my psyche, brings out the most desperate parts of me-
Hermione couldn't help herself and blurted out of shock "What kind of fucking idiot do you have to be to drink a slow acting death potion for money?!"
Draco coiled his fist as if he were about to slam it against the table but remembered his stance with the witch in front of him and took a breath then uncoiled his fist.
"Hermione, do you even know how much money we are talking about here?"
"Is it worth your life?!"
"100 Million Galleons, Hermione"
Hermione gasped, she had known it were a lot of money but nowhere near that kind of money. That was enough money to live comfortably one's entire life. Almost as if Draco was reading her mind he said
"I want out of this business, Hermione, and 100 million galleons is enough to set me for life"
They both kept eye contact, and Hermione sighed before asking her next question
"Aren't you loaded though, didn't your parents leave you enough money to oh I don't know, buy the damned moon?"
"You really didn't know about my parents did you, Hermione? They left me with a house and a job, but they kept their millions for themselves. Keep in mind this is a nice house and a well paying job, but they well paying job pays for the nice house. I wouldn't be able to pay for this house if I were to quit my job-
"You haven't thought about moving, maybe somewhere within your means?" Hermione placed her fingertips on her temples.
"What, and live in some hobble like you?"
"I do not live in a hobble! You don't even know where I live!"
"Well I am guessing it is a hobble, based on what you wear. I mean you do come from a muggle family, so maybe that would explain it, anyway, I have never been offered money like this before. And surprisingly enough I want to be a new man, at least the part of me that isn't being eaten away by this potion does. So I want to get this money, quit my job, and go to a new place, a new world in a sense, but to do that I need to live past Christmas"
Hermione just looked at Draco, it seemed like he was speaking gibberish. He was so irrational, so ridiculous, why was she even helping him? She took a breath
"You said that this potion, it brings out... the most... desperate part of you, what do you mean?"
Draco looked at Hermione coldly
"The primal Part of me, Mione, the part of me that takes revenge in blood, the part of me who beats the innocent when they are to inconvenience me, the part of me who wants to rip what's left of the clothes off of your body and fuck you until you know nobody's name but my own"
Hermione audibly gasped and started to fidget with herself nervously, shrinking in her chair. Draco continued
"I don't want to be that person anymore Hermione. I want to live a life worth living, I need your help not just to make this potion and save my physical living body but keep me from destroying the life I lead outside of my body"
Hermione sucked on her lower lip then look back up at Draco, speaking in a small voice "Why me?"
"I thought it was obvious, Hermione" Draco smirked a little "It's because you bring out the best of me, and there's this saying, oh how's it go, when you fall in love with the right person, you know it's right because they bring out the part of you that you love"
The young witch sat straight up from her hunched over position completely startled and tried to dissect the sentence presented to her, and while she was known for her poise and rationale, her words came out like spilled alphabet soup
"You love me-? What you tried- to what do you mean the best part? You tried?? How do I bring out the best part of you?"
Draco rested his head on his hand "You bring out the part of me who wants to live"
Hermione blushed furiously and found herself completely lost for words, so she just stared at the derranged man infront of her. He had to be derranged right, he actually loved her? Finally she broke the silence
"I want to help you Draco... I think I feel something for you too, but how do I avoid the primal part of you, the part of you who is dissapearing more and more each day?"
"Well we have to create this potion fast then, but this is a lot to ask of someone Hermione, and right now with all the rationale I have at my disposal at the moment I will give you a guilt free choice. You can either help me, or you can walk away. I won't try to hurt you if you do, I won't even blame you. So go ahead, the choice is yours"
His icy grey eyes clawed at Hermione's skull while the decision hung over her, would she be risking her physical safety to help Draco? Or would she have the chance to truly save someone? And did she really have feelings for him, or did she just say something in the moment? All the questions boomed through the poor girl's brain and without even really thinking it over she said
"I want to help you Draco."
"I hope you know what you are risking. Your safety, your sanity? Would you really be willing to throw all of that away for a murderer?"
"I know you can be a better person Draco. And it is very hard, very hard, to look over the fact that you killed someone, but you don't deserve to die yourself, especially if you have a potion eating away at your brain."
"Do you want to know who I killed before you make your final decision Hermione?"
Of all the things Draco had said to her that morning, this was the one that made Hermione's heart beat the fastest. And she quickly nodded her head
"It was a child, Hermione". The silence that followed that sentence hung in the air and wrapped itself around Hermione's neck and the tears she had been fighting all morning came pouring out of her eyes at once.
"What-what happened?" She choked
"I had a customer last year" Draco said, fighting tears himself "He came in wanting revenge on his ex-girlfriend, and while I wasn't exactly a hitman, he offered a good buck, and when I found her, I was just supposed to use the Cruciatus curse, make her feel a bit of pain for a few minutes... but she had her child with her..." Tears streamed out of Draco's eyes despite his desperate fighting of it "And when I said the curse, she ducked and it... it... it hit her child..." The words started to come out comepletely jumbled as Draco could feel his throat closing with tears "If it was a magic child, he would have survived, but it wasn't, he was a normal kid! He died in pain, Hermione! I watched the life leave a child!"
Hermione, without even thinking rushed over to Draco and tried to calm him "Draco, you didn't mean to kill him" She cried "You did something bad, but you're not a murderer. I can help you, I can. I have killed in the war, I promise I can help you. I know you didn't mean it" She took him in her arms and nuzzled her mouth on the top of his head.
Draco pulled Hermione close and for the second time that day they had both melted onto the kitchen floor. And when neither of them had any tears left, Hermione spoke, holding Draco close
"Draco Malfoy, you have done bad things, unspeakable things, but you are not a bad person. With every day comes a new chance to be a new man. I know that if you hurt me I will regret saying this but I am willing to risk you causing me pain because your the last thing I have in my life. Ron left me, Harry isn't speaking to me. I don't have my parents anymore. If I don't have you, no matter how disfunctional you are, I have nothing, you're my something. I don't even think I have my job any more, let's get you better, then we both can have lives worth living"
"Don't say that if you don't mean it, Hermione, you're the last thing I have too"
"I promise"
At that moment Hermione could feel Draco's entire body relax in her arms. She felt more relaxed too, but she knew she wouldn't feel like this for long, whatever was eating Draco's brain was acting fast, so she had to as well. If not, what almost happened that morning might happen every morning. Only a million times worse.
