It wasn't long after the call down to the kitchens, that servants in Palace livery arrived with trays of everything he had asked for, setting them down on the huge coffee table before the fireplace.
"Thank you," James said as soon as the last tray was set down. "That will be all. We'll serve ourselves."
They bowed as one. "Of course, your Majesty. If you should need anything else, just call."
James smiled. "We'll be sure to do that, Miles. Thank you."
He bowed once again, then he and the others turned and left the room. "Now, Rohan," Corvus sat back in his chair after making himself a plate, and a mug of strong, black tea. "Talk to us."
And talk he did.
Starting with when he had taken control of the Elendian Throne at twenty one. "Then, about a year ago, Brady and I decided it was time we took a more thorough look around Elendia, after we began to realize that there was something really wrong. We began the tour in the mining and farming communities around the Capitol, Elendia City. We found more than we anticipated, things we did not like the look of AT ALL.
"Steward Theron and more than half of the Council were not at all pleased when Brady and I suddenly decided to extend our Tour out beyond the surrounding area's of the Capitol, to the entire planet. Making a Royal visit, as it were," a smirk twisted his lips. "Though there were a few who were not as displeased as Theron was...in fact, they were down right ecstatic that we had decided to do so."
"I trust, young man, that you took the King's guard with you?" came James' question.
A snort. "As they were hardly going to allow us out of their sight, OR to leave the Palace without them...Commander Quinn was adamant. We would be going nowhere without him and the Guard."
"Good for him," Thorin said, taking a bite of his thick ham and turkey sandwich. "How long were you gone?"
"Close to six months, and once we DID finally return to the Capitol, it was Quinn who suggested that perhaps we should think about looking into the records of each of the places we visited, especially the mining and farming communities. Agreeing with him, we all got a good nights sleep, had a large breakfast, then went into the office.
"I called the Head of my Royal Clerks, told him that I wanted all of the records; the current contracts, as well as all trade agreements from each of the mining and farming communities, as well as from the villages, the town's and cities..." he shook his head, chuckling, remembering the shock in his voice when he had asked, 'ALL of them, Majesty?!'
"What's so funny, Rohan?" Christian asked when he suddenly broke into laughter.
Controlling himself, he answered. "Just remembering the shock in his voice when I told him what I needed. It was about three hours later when he brought me what I needed, said there were more and he would bring them up." He paused, drank deeply from his cooled mug of rich, dark, hot chocolate. "Dear, sweet GODS, what a headache THAT turned out to be. Even with Quinn, who, I learned, was more than the Commander of the King and Royal Guard, and several of the more trusted of the guard, helping us go through them."
"So who WAS Quinn?" Kili asked, suddenly very curious as he was receiving some very mixed emotions from Rohan, as was Aidyn, who was suddenly looking very...was that satisfaction?
"He's the Heir to the Dukedom of Wintersbourn. They own several of our largest ruby mines, and three of the largest farming communities belong to them."
"Which would explain how he knew to ask what he did. I could imagine, as it was for me when it came time for the renewal of all contracts, what a headache that was. What did you find? From your tone and expression, it wasn't good."
"It wasn't, and to say what we found was a shock, is mild. We were stunned beyond what was believable. The discrepancies were beyond atrocious, and what was worse, it wasn't just a few, and not just what was coming to the Crown, but what was moving between the mining and farming communities, but between the villages, towns, and cities themselves.
"I turned to Quinn, told him I wanted to see his father immediately. He nodded, left the office, and returned an hour later with the Duke of Wintersbourn. I told him everything, and the look in his eyes as he listened..."

"You KNEW?" he gasped, seeing the resignation in his hazel eyes.
"Of course I knew, Majesty, but there was little I could do. I was one of your father Devlin's best friends, and what they were going to do was making me sick. That's why I withdrew from not only the Council, but the Court. I just could not stomach what Steward Theron, and more than half of the current council were trying to do, though I told them they had better not think of even trying any of their shenanigans with Wintersbourn. If I had to separate Wintersbourn from the Crown until you came of age, then that's what I would do."
"And did you?"
"Yes. They left me no choice. When my contracts came due for renewal,,,Theron was refusing to renew them unless I agreed to what was in the new contract. I tore it up in front of him and stalked out, telling him Wintersbourn was now separated. It did make things hard for a bit, but we adjusted, became more self-sufficient, self-supporting. I'll renew my contracts, but I'd like to remain independent of the Crown."
Rohan smiled. "Doable. Let's talk about it, and a few other things."

"After that, it was then decided that ALL contracts were going to have to be reformed, and renegotiated so that they were more fair to everyone. I put Winston, the Duke of Wintersbourn in charge of that." A look of intense satisfaction. "Pissed of Theron and the Council by doing so too."
"Well, wasn't that too bad? I gather, then, everyone was suffering?"
"The biggest of our towns and Cities? No, not yet. They were better at handling some of the losses, but there were some minor issues that were beginning to crop up here and there, becoming more problematic as time went on. Our mining and farming communities, many of the villages and smaller towns were in serious trouble. We went to the Council...told them what we were going to do, that I had made the Duke of Wintersbourn my new Trade Leader, and that I would be opening the Treasury in order to assist those that needed it.
"The outcry was unbelievable...the look on their faces when I shouted at them to be silent," he chuckled. "It was always Brady who did the shouting, not me. I told them that it did not matter what they thought, OR what they wanted. We were renegotiating those contracts. AND I was going to open the Treasury. Full stop."
"Good for you, Rohan." Thorin said with a look of approval. "Where do you stand right now?"
"They are, of course, fighting us on what THEY think is fair, and what WE think is fair, and trust me, we are far from agreement on what we see as fair."
"Of course they are," Alekzander said then as he sat forward to refill his mug.
"They're fighting you because the bottom line of what you and Wintersbourn want to do is going to cut into their profits," Christian said then as he too sat forward to refill his tea. "I suggest you and Wintersbourn try to regulate and control the changes that you and Brady want made."
"Agreed," James said quietly, thoughtfully. "Did you by any chance bring those contracts with you? The old ones and the new? I think I would like to see for myself what your Council has done to Elendia, especially as I allowed them to remain in control until you came of age. I'd also like to see what you and Wintersbourn have come up with."
"We were kind of hoping that you, Thorin and Corvus would look at them with us. It's becoming harder and harder to reign in Brady. We've both been so furious about this whole mess, but he had a harder time of controlling his temper than I do." He gave them a half smile. "I would really like to solve this without anyone dying, namely the Steward, and that third of the Council that are still following him."
"If they have committed Treason by intentionally harming the people of Elendia just so they could line their own pockets... You DO know that you may have no choice?"
"True, Ethan, but I think I would much rather do it legally. That way I don't have to write any speeches explaining to those very same people why their Crown Prince took matters into his own hands and beheaded their Steward right there in the Council room, then went after the Council, even IF they were cheating them"
The laughter that followed lasted a few minutes. "Smart idea, my boy," James told him as soon as they were all back under control. "You, Brady...Wait, did Wintersbourn come with you?"
"He did."
"Good, then the three of you come up to my office," he turned his head. "What do you think, Thorin, Cor? Around eleven?"
They both nodded. "Eleven would be fine, James." Thorin turned his head to look at his eldest. "You will join us, Fili. Take this chance to learn a bit more more about governance."
Fili nodded. "Of course, Adad {father}."
"I will also speak privately to Brady. I can see you both are prepared to do whatever you will need to do to rectify what has been done, and to charge your Steward and those Councilors still following him with Treason. You may also want to consider adding the charge of defrauding the Throne, which is also an instant death penalty."
"I would agree with that," Thorin said, his dark blue eyes taking on an intent look. "Our jobs as Kings, Rohan, are hard enough as it is without those who are supposed to help us, fighting and hindering us. Devlin loved the people of Elendia, and he ALWAYS put them first. He refused to put up with anyone who put themselves above the people just to line their own pockets."
"The people are our backbone, Rohan," Corvus took up. "If you break them, then you break everything that they are tied too."
"I remember so little about my father, but THAT, I do remember, and also a part of why I've been so hesitant in replacing some of them. They loved my father, served him well, but..." he shook his head, sadness in his silver eyes. "As has been frequently noted, I am NOT my father."
"Nor should you be."
"And THAT, Rohan, is also what they are counting on," Sirius suddenly spoke up. "They DID serve your father well, and yes, may have even loved him, but power, if left unchecked for very long, can corrupt even the best of men. You were only eight, Brady was five, and the triplets two when Devlin and Rosalia were killed. You were twenty one when you took control of your Throne. That left Theron and your council in control for thirteen years."
"Sirius is right," James said, "and I think we all know what you are going to have to do what you really don't want too, once you return to Elendia. I'm going to send Simon with you. I can spare him for a few days to help you do whatever you might need too."
"His help would be greatly appreciated. He will also be able to be more objective then either Brady and I can be." Rohan said with a nod.
"Exactly so, but he also has High Crown authority should you need to use it."
A nod. "Let's hope that I won't."
