Heart of Darkness and Light
Chapter 6
Severus awoke from a fitful sleep, his body still experiencing the tremors and convulsions from the multitude of curses thrown his way. He heard the wind and rain outside the window. He slowly opened his eyes. Even they hurt, he thought. The room came into focus, more importantly, SHE came into focus.
‘You, ‘ he rasped, ‘were there?’
‘Don’t try to talk, Severus, you’ve been through a tiny bit of torture,’ she smoothed the hair back from his sweaty forehead, ‘still hurts, huh?’
He nodded as she made him drink cool water between the muscle spasms. He looked up at her and saw that her face was streaked with blood and there was a strange kind of electricity in her blue eyes. She looked angry. In fact, she felt angry. He wondered if her mood had anything to do with the frightful weather outside.
‘I can help this, if you’ll let me,’ she said, running a finger across the healing cuts on his face. Poppy did a nice job with his wounds, she thought.
‘I’ll be fine.’
‘I’ve no doubt you will be, but if you want to get back to work by Monday, you might want to take me up on my offer. Of course, it’s your choice.’
Severus was wracked with another spasm as he felt a cold liquid flow through his body. It felt like a curse he hadn’t been subject to before.
‘Yes,’ said Ariah, looking at him carefully, ‘I can’t figure out what that last thing Malfoy hit you with was either, but I can get rid of it.’
‘Please.’
‘What? You actually said PLEASE? Holy shit, he hit you with a Politeacus Curse!’
In spite of the pain and cold running through his body, Severus grinned, ‘Do what you can. I can’t be in this bed being hovered over by Poppy Pomfrey much longer.’
‘Severus, you’ve been here for 3 hours. And from what I understand, you were passed out through much of it, so it can’t have been that bad.’
‘Maybe not, but I KNOW she was hovering,’ he scowled.
Ariah smiled down at Severus, glad to see the grin—and the scowl. She asked Severus to close his eyes, and she silently drew her hands over his body. Green, yellow, and brown light rose off his body and into her hands, flowing through her for a moment, causing her to feel a bit of what he had been experiencing, before the curses were neutralized by her body, exited her, and dissipated somewhere around the ceiling. Ariah shuddered, just the slight touch of the curses through her body hurt. She could only begin to imagine the pain Severus had been in. She drew her hands over his body again, sensing no more trace of any curse. She bent down and lightly brushed his forehead with her lips.
‘Feel any better?’ she asked.
Severus opened his eyes and smiled weakly at her, ‘Much better, what did you do?’
‘I took the curses away. They passed through me and were purified and sent back out as energy.’
‘You can do that?’
‘Yes, one of the perks of being a goddess,’ she replied, looking into his eyes and seeing his deep need for sleep, ‘you need to sleep.’
‘Not tired,’ he protested, as his eyes began to close.
‘Not much,’ she replied as she brushed his lips with another soft kiss.
‘Thank you Ariah,’ he mumbled as he drifted off to sleep.
‘You’re welcome, my love,’ whispered Ariah, placing her head against his chest to feel his heart beat.
Ariah stayed like that for a long while, listening to his heartbeat, letting it lull her to sleep. One of the perks of being in human form, she thought, falling asleep listening to the rain, the wind, and a lover’s heart.

The next morning Severus awoke to sunshine. Ariah was nowhere in sight, but y Poy Pomfrey was fussing over his bedside.
‘Poppy, you’re making me tense,’ he scowled, ‘can you stop that incessant hovering?’
‘Good to see you feeling more yourself, Severus,’ she replied, ‘For some reason, there are no traces of the curses left in you. How did that come to pass?’
‘Professor Morrigan did it last night. She took them away,’ he said, ‘purified them with her body and released them.’
‘She’s not a witch, is she, Severus? She’s something more.’
‘I suppose,’ he said, ‘when can I go back to my quarters? I have work to do.’
‘Albus said you could go when you felt up to it. Said there was no point in keeping you here against your will.’
‘Then I’ll leave now,’ he sat up and glared at Poppy, who was stifling a chuckle, ‘what is so damned amusing, Madame Pomfrey?’
‘I just thought you might like to get dressed before you venture into the hallways.’
He scowled and grabbed the clean clothing laid out on the chair next to the bed, ‘Do you mind, Madame Pomfrey? I’m not in the habit of dressing for your entertainment.’
Once dressed, Severus headed back to the dungeons. He passed by two Gryffindors in the hallway, that insufferable Hermione Granger, and that nincompoop Neville Longbottom. He trained a glare on them as he passed, causing Longbottom to drop the stack of books he was holding. Severus heard the crash of books and smiled, it’s good to be a bastard, he thought. He reached his quarters, barked out his password, and entered. He felt angry. And he didn’t know why, which in turn made him angrier. He threw open his wardrobe and grabbed a robe. He slammed open the door to his bathroom and turned on the shower full force. As he stormed about his rooms, he heard a bemused soft silken voice from behind him.
‘Why so tense, Sev? Ever consider switching to decaf?’
He turned around and saw Ariah sitting in his favorite chair, a smile playing about her lips.
‘Honestly,’ she said, standing up and approaching him, ‘you’re going to explode if you don’t release some of that anger.’
‘I recall you looking rather angry yourself last night. Was that storm your doing?’
‘Absolutely,’ she admitted, wrapping her arms around his neck, ‘I was pretty pissed off.’
Severus put his arms around her waist and drew her closer, ‘at what?’
‘Oh the usual, Death Eater cowards, Dark Lords, slimy men named Lucius, global warming?’
‘Yeah, they got on my nerves too,’ he said, brushing away a lock of hair from her cheek, ‘well, not the global warming thing.’
Ariah smiled up at him, ‘They did a number on you last night.’
‘You were there, weren’t you?’
‘Of course I was. Nothing like a good old fashioned post coital torture session, huh?’
‘Made my night,’ he said, bending his head down and softly kissing her lips.
‘Mmmm,’ she murmured, ‘you’d better hop in that shower before you flood the bathroom. I’ll read a book, I know you have a copy of ‘Snide Wizardry Throughout the Ages’ around here somewhere.’
‘It’s on the second shelf next to ‘Potion Brewing for Absolute Bastards.’
He grinned as he dropped his robes to the floor and grabbed a towel and his bathrobe. As he stepped into the shower he suddenly realized something, he wasn’t angry anymore. He couldn’t even remember why he’d been angry in the first place. 5 minutes with Ariah and the perfectly good head of steam he’d had was gone. Dammit, he thought to himself, No way is some goddess going to have that kind of hold over me. He finished up his shower, and exited the bathroom, drying himself off as he went. He looked over at Ariah, sitting in HIS chair, reading one of HIS books, and gave her a quick glare. He dressed in stony silence.
‘Problem?’ she asked.
‘I’ll be damned if I’m going to let you domesticate me like some common household pet.’ he spat.
‘What are you talking about? When did I try to domesticate you? Last I checked I wasn’t a snake charmer.’
‘That whole calming me down thing. I came in here ready to kick ass and take names and suddenly I can’t even remember why I was angry.’
Ariah rolled her eyes, ‘at least I merely domesticated you and didn’t attempt to neuter you, the thought of which is quite tempting right now.’
‘I have work to do,’ he said shortly.
‘I guess that’s my hint to leave, huh? I don’t understand you, Severus Snape, and I don’t know if I ever will.’ She touched the book she was reading and he noticed that it became a much slimmer volume, ‘perhaps you should try a little light reading before you assert your masculine ‘I can’t and won’t be tamed… dominance on some unsuspecting potions ingredients.’
She stormed out of his chambers, slamming the door behind her. Severus silently steamed for a few minutes before walking over to the table and picking up the book. What was once a history of art book was now a Muggle book called ‘The Little Prince’. He ignored the book, going about his business. Every so often he would glance at the book until it became annoying. He picked it up and was about to shelve it when it opened in his hands. Against his better judgment, Severus sat down and began reading. He found himself caught up in the tale. When he finished, he gently closed the book, sighed, and picked up a piece of parchment and a quill, writing a few words down. He called for his owl and whispered instructions to the large dark bird.
Ariah sat on a familiar boulder by the lake, gazing out at the calm waters. She had never known anyone as frustrating as Severus. She got close, he pulled away, she gave him space, and he wanted her close. And now this ‘domestication’ thing. She sighed. Why was it so hard to love him? She knew she did. He just made it so difficult. Was she simply tilting at windmills or would her feelings ever be reciprocated? Her thoughts were disturbed by the arrival of a large dark owl. The owl dropped a parchment in front of her and swiftly turned and headed back to the castle. Ariah picked up the parchment and opened it. She read it and smiled, shaking her head. The man was learning. She had to hand that to him. On the parchment were 11 little words: ‘But if you tame me, then we shall need each other’.
