Epilogue

Harry reached out to finger the Order of Merlin First Class with his name on it and grinned. The elves had just finished putting up the display with their awards in the room at Malfoy Manor which housed such acknowledgments and he wanted to look it over. His was there, of course, so were Severus and Lucius’. There were also two more, smaller ones, for Nagini and Kaliya. He hadn’t known until they were presented that there was an animal version of the award, but there was. They all received one for their part in the Final Battle, as had Sirius and Remus. From what he knew, almost all who participated received an award of some kind, though they ended up with the top honors.
After giving a nod, still smiling, he walked out to find Lucius and Severus. From what they said, they would be in the study signing the last of the paperwork from the Ministry. It had to deal with the bond and whatnot which came from it, junk like his schooling, legal papers dealing with the bond, things like that. It wasn’t a hardship, just something they had to tend to.
As he wandered in the direction where he knew the study was, he kept an eye out for landmarks. They had only moved into the Manor earlier in the week, so he was still getting used to what was where. He’d manage.
It was just after the first of the year and they were finally settling down into a routine again. There had been a huge upheaval after the battle because of the bonding and whatever. True to her word, Amelia Bones hadn’t questioned much when it came to what happened, realizing he was safe and protected. Though she arched an eyebrow at the bonding, probably figuring it was done for other reasons as well, she had let it go. Her plate was full with the aftermath from the war. Since there wasn’t a problem on their end and he was happy, they were left alone with Severus and Lucius protected, just how they wanted.
Again, true to her word, Amelia had gone after Dumbledore for so much. She had even leveled charges against the aged Headmaster for plotting his death. While she knew it wouldn’t make it to trial, as he was dying, she wanted it out there with the evidence she had. As there was plenty, including the packets of information found in the Headmaster’s office detailing the whole plot after the battle, there was no doubt he did what he was accused of. However, as anticipated, he didn’t make it trial. Dumbledore succumbed to the curse two nights ago, dying in his sleep. Harry didn’t comment, though the papers were asking for it, but he was relieved it was over. The worst part, what almost felt like a betrayal by someone he trusted, hurt, he was moving on.
The rest? Well, it was just adjusting to plenty, like being able to go out again and dealing with people. He had spent time with his friends at Grimmauld Place several times since the battle ended, happy to see them, but it was awkward because of explaining so much. Lucius had visited Narcissa and Draco a couple times in the States to work out that end. From what Harry knew, the two were going to stay there as Draco liked the school and would just visit during the summers. It was good by him. As the whole part with Draco was something which needed eased into and something better built than the relationship they had previously, it would take time.
As he continued to wander towards the study, Harry smiled. Last summer he would have told anyone who suggested he would adore Lucius and Severus mental, nonetheless, the truth was he did. For the first time in his life, he was truly happy. They were the reason. The relationship was still growing and building, but he loved it. In the end, that was all that mattered.
When he turned a corner he was certain would lead to the part of the Manor the study was in, he stopped when he heard his name called. Looking over his shoulder, he grinned as Kaliya hurried to catch up to him. While he adored Ron, Hermione and the rest of his friends, Kaliya was his best friend. Though a snake, he was still crazy about Kaliya and was closer to him than he had been to any of the humans he knew. It was fine as well. He loved it.
After picking the snake up and draping him over his shoulders, he continued his trek. Yes, this was good. He loved his life and would continue to do so. It wasn’t perfect, but he was happy. In the end, being happy was all that mattered. And he was.
