Chapter 61
The spirit before him smiled benignly, hearing his thoughts, feeling his emotions as if he’d spoken aloud.
“Agh!“ It took him by surprise when it swooped forward, sweeping through him and heading back down to the scene below.
He watched as it passed through Paula and he saw a smile spread across the lips of the woman he loved.
He observed her taking a small ivory casket in her hand and holding it next to the diamond lens.
Paula lay the Whitefire-Moon diamond lens on Severus’ forehead, next to it she placed the small ivory casket and opened the lid.
A pale mist drifted from the casket, taking on form until it looked like a shadowy impersonation of himself.
“Mande barearav tu sutho. Hai shala me gajo, me pisliskurja.” (I honour and respect you. Do you understand my darling?) “Tu camo, me camo, is zuhno.” (Your love, my love, is pure.)
“Yes, I do understand, I do.“ Severus whispered as he watched along with her, as his shadowy form was pulled into the diamond. He could feel ¾
something. Like a tugging somewhere inside of himself. It wasn’t uncomfortable, just strange.
Paula sat back on her heels as one by one the freed souls passed through his corporeal self on the floor, then again flitted up passed his nowhere self as they made their last journey to the heavens.
“Nais tuke. Ashen Devlesa, Romale.” (Thank you. May you remain with God) She told the sprits as they drifted away.
Paula waited until the small piece of Severus’ soul was completely absorbed by the diamond, then she placed it into the wound on his neck and whispered more incantations, dressing the wound with the diamond still inside.
Taken by surprise, Severus, who’d been on his hands and knees as he observed, clawed helplessly at the nothingness around him as he felt himself pulled downward rapidly. His limbs flailed wildly, unsure what was happening and expecting that any moment he was going to hit the ground with a resounding thud, and it would be extremely painful.
With a choked sob, Paula placed the remaining herbs in her pouch and stood, rather unsteadily. Waving her hands over his still form, she levitated his body through the door and down the staircase and out of the Shrieking Shack.
“Riley.”
Riley appeared looking slightly the worse for wear, closely followed by a bedraggled looking Fawkes.
Very carefully she mounted Riley and floated Severus’ body to lay across her lap, holding his limp form tenderly.
Fawkes let out a saddened trill before perching behind her on the rump of somewhat battered beast.
Without a sound, the four of them took to the skies and made for the hills.
Paula was relieved to find her campsite still undiscovered. She’d left the vurdon hidden as best she could, but was unable to maintain her protective wards with all the energy she’d expended. It was a struggle to dismount while still levitating the unconscious Severus. She laid him gently on a patch of soft moss and expanded the vurdon that Riley had considerately pulled from its hiding place.
Fawkes took on the duty of carrying Severus inside and laid him carefully on the bed, expending the last of his energy before reclaiming his perch near the window and promptly bursting into flames.
Paula ignored the pile of ashes containing the only bird she’d ever allowed in her home. Fawkes was Fawkes. He wasn’t a common bird like any other, but a beautiful, magical being. Plus he was kak’s, and that alone made him a source of comfort to Paula.
She removed a jar of warming salve from a cupboard and spread it thickly over her forearms. It would not keep her going very long, but hopefully long enough that she could stabilise Severus and make him comfortable before she settled herself down to rest.
After pulling the covers back, she weaved her hands over him, effectively removing his clothing and covering him up. Next she retrieved a small blue phial from a rack above the bed, removed the dressing from his neck and placed a few drops of the clear liquid inside over the wound on his neck. The rest she dripped steadily onto his tongue, added fresh herbs to the wound and placed a new dressing on it. Fortunately Fawkes had provided her with tears several weeks prior, knowing his burning time was drawing near. Today’s efforts had brought his burning time on prematurely.
After ensuring her man was comfortable and breathing steadily, she walked alongside Riley to the small waterfall so she could bathe and he could drink.
On their return she tended his wounds and entered the vurdon. Checking once more that all was well with Severus, she shed her clothes and joined him under the covers, falling asleep in seconds.
She woke at sunrise, feeling drained, but better than she had the day before.
Checking that Severus was still asleep, she made her way to the waterfall to bathe again, then returned, lit the fire and went inside to tend to Severus’ wound.
She had her breakfast and made a weak broth from the left over chicken.
She managed to get him to swallow a couple of spoonfuls before he passed out again.
When she went back outside, Riley sent her the images from his morning trip to Hogwarts.
A large part of the castle was in ruins, whole towers lying amongst the rubble that strewed the grounds.
Lost wands, a severed limb, one dead giant that no one had yet been able to move, and a line of bodies placed along one wall. One of those bodies was gutted and headless so she assumed that they were all werewolves, though she could not be certain.
Riley showed her a few of the staff as they searched the grounds and nearby forest for more dead or injured.
There was a large scorch mark on the grass near to where she’d camped during her tenure as the Defence Professor.
The limbs of the Whomping Willow floundered feebly, a torn red cape swinging from one of its branches and refusing to relent its grip on the tree.
A swarm of Ministry Aurors, some heading inside the castle, while others examined the corpses outside.
Several of them used their wands together to try and move the massive remains of the giant. In all it took twenty wizards to summon enough power to lift and remove it.
Her eyes filled with tears, she rubbed Riley’s nose. “Is he dead? Did Harry kill him?”
Riley nodded and pawed the ground, but she could not bring herself to smile. Not knowing so many had lost their lives because of one mans misguided notion that he was supremely better than everyone else, that one man believed that the blood running though his veins made him superior, gave him the right to rule the world by his rules and his alone.
“O shoshoy kaste si feri yek khiv sigo athadjol.” (The rabbit which has only one hole soon is caught) “Hm Riley?”
For three weeks, Paula tended Severus constantly. His dressing was changed several times a day, he was given mixtures of herbs, along with Paula’s own potions, designed to build his strength, alleviate pain, slowly repair his damaged organs to their previous state, and force him to breath as well as give him the nourishment he was unable to take by mouth. A couple of times a day she was able to stir him enough to swallow a couple of spoonfuls of weak broth and his potions, but nothing more. The Whitefire-Moon diamond was the one thing that prevented him from dying, holding his spirit intact.
Every morning and evening, she would sing soft incantations to him, their foreheads touching, her arms against his chest, hands gently cupping his cheeks.
Her supply of Phoenix tears was depleted after two days and she was waiting for Fawkes to mature enough that he could produce more.
Finally, at the end of those three weeks, Fawkes managed to produce a few tears. Enough at least that she could mix them with the drarnego that she packed the wound with several times a day.
He had still not regained consciousness.
Three and a half weeks after the battle, Paula decided she could leave him long enough to visit Hogwarts.
After ensuring his breathing was unhindered and he was pain free, She left Riley and Fawkes to watch over him and apparated to Hogwarts.
