LEECH
Chapter 61
Severus sat in the Room of requirement with Kathy. She was feeling more tranquil than she had in many weeks. The powerful relaxant potion he’d prepared for her was working through her system.
She’d taken it willingly once Severus explained what would happen to her. Her eyes, which had begun to take on their deep red colour as she uncorked the phial, were now a soft brown. Her eyes. The eyes he loved to stare into. This would be the last time he would be able to do so and he mourned their loss already. He mourned what might have been, the chance of … No. He had to shut those thoughts out. But it did nothing to dispel the feeling of loss.
“I’ll miss you Severus. I might not remember you, but I’ll still miss you, in here.” She said, placing a hand over her heart as the gentle brown eyes filled with tears. “I think, I think I love you.” She said, her voice fading as she finally succumbed to the sleeping aspect of the potion.
Severus fought hard to prevent tears spilling from his own eyes as she fell asleep in his arms. “Foolish, idiotic man.” He grumbled to himself while wiping a sleeve across his eyes. He knew he loved her, knew it with every fibre of his being. Her last confession that she loved him also was his undoing. It would have been better had he never known for sure.
Schooling his face, he pointed his wand at the door and stood, the sleeping woman in his arms.
“It was late at night and all the students were in their beds as Severus carried Kathy down the stone staircases of Hogwarts, surrounded by two dozen of the most staunch Order members.
Every one of them had known Kathy, most had experienced her Leeching powers, all had tasted her cooking and liked her down to earth personality. All were saddened that it had come to this.
Between them they’d raised enough funds to buy a small terraced house on the outskirts of a muggle town in the north of England. Everyone in the Order gave what they could, those who were sufficiently well off gave the bulk of the capital, those of lesser means gave whatever they could spare, and then some.
Severus arranged for the bulk of his income from teaching to be transferred each month into a muggle account in Kathy’s name, the donor to remain anonymous. It wasn’t a great deal, but it would be enough for her to live comfortably, and it wasn’t as if he needed it himself. He also arranged for two thirds of what he’d saved over the years to be placed in the account so she would have money for extra’s if she required them. When he died, as he was certain would happen before the Dark Lord was finally banished, his pension would be transferred to her name.
“Once they were outside the gates, Albus produced a Port Key, a long length of twine that would accommodate everybody, and said “Portus.”
------------
The little end terrace basically consisted of one room upstairs and one room down. Flitwick and Minerva used their wands to slightly enlarge the interior, adding a wall to separate the kitchen from the living room, and similarly making the bedroom larger so they could add a bathroom up there.
The old, shabby furniture that had been left by the previous owner was transfigured to a better condition and the plain back yard became a garden.
Severus laid Kathy on the now comfortable sofa and knelt on the floor beside her. He didn’t know if what they planned would work, but it was their only hope, her only hope.
Removing several different coloured phials from his pocket, he opened the green one and gently holding Kathy in an upright position, he tipped the contents into her mouth. He massaged her throat gently so she would swallow then laid her down again.
“Renervate.” He intoned.
Kathy opened her eyes, rather startled at her surroundings and Severus staring down at her, a sad look in his eyes. She noticed others, people she knew all watching her intently.
“Severus? Are we… is this where… where I’ll be?”
He nodded. He knew if he tried to speak his voice would crack with the raw emotion roiling inside of him.
“What now? What do I have to do?”
“”Drink.” He said softly, handing her another potion. Blue this time. It was followed by clear one, another blue, and finally, a thick, gloopy brown that tasted surprisingly like strawberries.
“That was nice.” She told him, afraid to even begin telling him how she felt.
“Each week a supply of the brown potion will be delivered here, you will not see it arrive, you will not even be aware that it is for anything other than the sole purpose of imbibing.” He leaned close and whispered in her ear. “I love you Kathy. I will love you for the rest of my life and beyond.” Then he discretely slipped a fine gold band onto her finger, to join the one she already wore from her marriage to David.
Before she had chance to respond, he aimed his wand at her and said, “Obliviate.”
Albus passed him a piece of parchment that detailed all the false memories he needed to implant in her mind. He completed the task with a cold indifference, refusing to give into his feelings. Then he stood back with the others and watched as she looked at them confused.
“Hello. Who are you?”
“Just old work mates.” Remus told her. “You asked us to come and see you before the company relocated down to Essex. We all wish you luck in your new home Kathy. Bye.” They said as one as they filed out of the front door.
Kathy smiled at them blankly as they left. As soon as the last one was gone, she locked the front door and headed for the kitchen to make a cup of tea. She really was tired and should go to bed now, but she’d sleep better after a cuppa. At least someone had washed up for her before they all went. She felt strangely lonely once they’d gone. Especially the last gentleman to leave, what was his name? She couldn’t for the life of her remember. It annoyed her for a moment that she couldn’t remember his name, she felt an odd surge of true anger for a second, then it passed and she headed upstairs to get ready for bed. She forgot about the cup of tea.
