Chapter 60
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
With help from Lynn.
Looking in the mirror in the washroom at the Ministry, Lucius was making sure everything was in place and looking normal. He also made sure to cast extra freshening charms on himself so that any of the smells from the fire and whatnot couldn't be detected. Already his heart was hammering, knowing how delicate this was about to be. There was also all that was riding on what he had to say. This was one mission he did not want to mess up. Since the Dark Lord's return, he had felt his wrath once already and was still in disfavor over that error in judgment. If he bungled this particular mission, it would end up even worse. That he couldn't allow to happen.
After checking himself over critically, making damned sure everything was in place, Lucius felt he was ready to do this. After all, he only had a very limited time to get with Cornelius and make it look good. Delaying wasn't something he had time for. Nodding to himself in the mirror, he swept out to go find the Minister of Magic.Catching Cornelius just as he looked like he was preparing to head home, Lucius stopped him with a light touch on the elbow. “Sorry to disturb, as I know you're about to leave, but if I could bend your ear a moment on some information I heard not long ago, it would be most appreciated, Cornelius.” He already had the excuse in mind, of course, a minor piece of legislation that was tricky and controversial. It was also one that the Dark Lord did want to go through, so it was well known that he was paying close attention to it.Though tired, Cornelius wasn't about to turn Lucius down. After all, the man was one of his top donors. “Of course, Lucius,” he said, looking pleasant. “Do we need to retire to my office or is doing it here fine?”“No need to make a big production of it,” Lucius told him with a dismissive wave. “If we just slide out of the flow of traffic, we can discuss it quickly. It's about that tricky bit of legislation dealing with werewolves.”That contentious piece of legislation was giving him an ulcer, to be honest, so Cornelius actually looked forward to what Lucius had to say on the topic to know which direction to lean. Motioning Lucius to follow, he found a quiet corner for them to discuss it.Delving in, trying not to focus on what was coming, Lucius laid out what he thought of the legislation, factoring in what the Dark Lord wanted to press for. He also made a clear case that much of what was there didn't apply to those like Fenrir. Even he found that werewolf the height of disgusting and what he did reckless. He was sure that if he didn't have his uses to the Dark Lord, that nasty piece of work would have died long ago for endangering so much.As Cornelius listened intently, taking in everything Lucius said, pleased to finally have a way to lean, he was distracted by a couple members of the DMLE hurrying their way, looking wide-eyed. Cutting Lucius off by holding up his hand, he waited to see what was going on.Pretending that he was startled by the interruption, Lucius stepped back, but listened intently, acting like he was stunned by what he was hearing. Now he just had to wait for the opportune moment to interject himself and get this moving how they needed it to.Sputtering when the conversation finished, pale, Cornelius turned to Lucius then told him, mopping his brow, “I'm sorry, but I have to go. You heard what this is. That means I need involved to oversee it before it becomes a big cock-up. I'm sure you understand, Lucius. Stop over in the next couple of days and we'll finish discussing this.”“Of course,” Lucius told him, an understanding bent to his voice. “However, before you go, if I may—a suggestion?” This was it. He was sure as flustered as Cornelius was that he would take it. Seeing the man motion for him to continue, he pressed on. “If I were you, I would not only go there personally to oversee the matter so that it's done by the books, but you go to Hogwarts personally to inform Mr. Potter. That's going to make sure it's not only done right, but so the public sees you're involved. I'm sure Mr. Potter would also appreciate the matter.” Lowering his voice, sounding conspiratorial, he added, “And considering what Albus is like with Mr. Potter and how he will have to be involved when you all get to that school, you might want to get Mr. Potter's solicitor there as fast as you can. Doing all that can only help you, Cornelius.” Though it was common knowledge that he didn't like Mr. Potter, it was also equally as well known that he hated Albus even more. Plus, this would be expected to help Cornelius. As Cornelius wasn't about to put it out there that he had a hand in anything, no one else would think anything was off with his involvement or suggestions.“Oh yes, those are areas I need to tend to. Yes, they are. Thank you, Lucius, you were most helpful!” Mind already circling the problems, he planned to stay one step ahead of that old goat and be the hands on Minster he touted himself as. This was perfect to show that.Smug, pleased that it went perfectly, Lucius nodded to him. “I'll leave you to handle the emergency. At some point this week, I'll pop in and we can continue our discussion.” Seeing Cornelius nod, summoning the people he needed, Lucius left, planning to go report in.
Standing and looking at the imposing castle after Apparating to its gates, Severus wanted a few minutes to gather himself before going in and facing the old man. As he was still Disillusioned, he could do this safely without anyone noticing. Eyes locked on the castle he considered his home for so long, he clenched his fists. It was a good thing he was able to control his emotions because, if he couldn't, he would be shaking with rage.
Though he held no love for Mr. Potter, what he heard tonight made him want to strangle an old man. The curse would do him in, they all knew that by now, but he wanted it to be by his hands. That promise elicited all those years ago to protect Potter felt like a fraud and that he had failed. And it was because of Albus he felt this way. Albus had made damned sure, knowing what that odious family was like, that Mr. Potter had a rotten life. All along he thought those articles in the paper were wrong, that Mr. Potter had made it all up. He was wrong, dead wrong. Though some of it might have been embellished, it appeared that the facts were correct. Mr. Potter's family was as bad as his father. And that made him feel filthy. Worse than normal.Sighing, he lowered his head and shook it. Now he could completely understand why Mr. Potter had chosen the path he did. With all that had gone on, coupled with his affinity, he had chosen the better way. At least in his opinion. He now understood why the attack happened tonight, at least partially. Oh, he was sure he didn’t comprehend the whole reason why, but he knew enough to guess parts. And most of that was probably so Mr. Potter never had to return to Privet Drive and Albus couldn't force him back. That he could most assuredly appreciate.Opening his eyes, he looked at the castle once more then stiffened his spine. It was time to go take care of the next part of his mission. He would relish the look on the old goat's face when he told him what went on, because he doubted there was anything left that Albus could do to force Mr. Potter back there or that family to accept him once more. Good! Now he also wanted to see how this was going to play out as he was sure Potter and the Dark Lord had more in mind than just the attack. That he wanted to know and would relish watching.Smirking slightly, he straightened his robes then canceled the Disillusion before starting towards the castle. Revenge was sweet and he was about to see part of it play out. That he liked.
“Oh, Merlin,” was all Albus was able to mutter while stroking his beard with a trembling hand after Severus told him what went on. Of all the things he had expected from Tom, this wasn't one of them. Now he wasn't sure what to do. “The Dark Mark was hung?”
“Oh yes,” Severus nodded, smirking internally at what he was seeing. Good! Let the old goat flounder, it would only help them. “As many Unforgivables as were thrown about, I'm sure the Ministry will end up heavily involved. I'm also sure the neighbors saw us all on the lawn.” Stopping, he waited to see if that poke would drive him further into a panic.Groaning, Albus' head dropped forward. Mind circling the issue, and how to deal with it, he was muddled about what he could do. One thing came to mind, though. Lifting his head, he looked at Severus then asked, “You weren't involved in the torture, were you?” Though he didn't intend it, his tone was slightly sharp. He hoped that wasn't the case as he needed Severus and the information he could give them. It would be all the harder if the man was hauled in for questioning.“Absolutely not,” Severus told him with a sneer, arms folded over his chest. “I was assigned to watch, nothing more. I participated in nothing.”Relieved by that, Albus gave a tired nod. “Good. We don't want you involved, my boy. Who led the attack? And was Tom there?”“Evan led the attack, but the Dark Lord was in attendance. He made it clear to all of us before starting that Evan was in charge and we were to listen to him,” Severus told him honestly. He really wasn't sure what else to say to prod the old man as he wasn't certain what the exact plans were. As it was, it looked like the old goat was fumbling. As he was sure that the curse was affecting his mind at this point, that was to be expected and could only help. So, rather than prod, he decided to wait and see where this went. Not sure what to do, Albus tried to think. With a groan, he finally said, “I think we need to get poor Harry in here and tell him what happened. As it's an almost certainty that the DMLE will end up involved, they'll probably show up here to tell him as he's affected. I think its best that he hear it from us so that he's not as blindsided.”Severus was about to answer, when the Floo in the office activated with an urgent message. Trying not to smirk, he waited. This was perfect.
Pouring through a book he was using for an essay, Harry was parked in the Gryffindor common room. Though he looked like he was hard at it, the truth was he was about to jump out of his skin from nerves. Of all the things they had done so far, this was the biggest and the one most could go wrong with as they were depending on plenty of people to pull off other parts they needed. Though they had picked the best they could for this mission, there were always variables that you couldn't count on. Fudge was a big one, though he assumed Lucius would get him moving in the direction they needed. The DMLE was another as they didn't have anyone there that would end up working on this.
As he flipped through the pages of the book, looking as though he was hunting for information for anyone that might glance in his direction, Harry was desperately trying to work out all the different scenarios that might come from what happened and how to handle them. Of course, they had the most basic of plans worked out, something that he would use to guide him, but most of it would depend on him thinking on his feet. He could do that, of course, and would, but it was just nerve wracking.By now, he knew the deed was done and everything that could be set in motion had been completed. He was just in a holding pattern, waiting to be drawn in. That was the worst of all this. Sighing, he shook his head, finally tossing the book aside and leaning back with a groan. Shutting his eyes, his head dropped back and he rubbed his face. He just wished it would hurry up! The wait was making him completely mental!Straightening up, he looked around at what he had spread all over, trying to decide what to do. Studying was out as he couldn't concentrate, but he needed something to keep his mind occupied until the time was right. And he didn't know what that was. Glancing around, he gave an internal sigh when he didn't see anyone that he could talk to. Most were doing what he was. Others were in small groups talking. With how he was anymore, going over and joining in would look odd. That he didn't want either. Sighing, he decided he needed to look like he was studying as that was 'normal' for him.Grabbing another book from the stack there, he then began to flip through it as though he was trying to find what he needed. With that, he was mentally snarling for someone, somewhere to hurry the hell up!Just as he was settling in, starting to focus enough that he could bookmark possible things he might need for the paper, he was startled when someone said his name. Looking up, he could see a white as a sheet Professor McGonagall standing there with her hands clasped in front of her. Her lips were drawn into a thin line and she was looking tense. It was time. Trying to look confused, he asked, “Yes? What's going on?”“Mr. Potter, if you would come with me, please? You're needed for something.” She said, trying to keep her normal tone. With all the eyes and ears in the common room now focused on her, she wasn't going to say what was really going on. That could wait until they were in Albus' office where the biggest of the gossips in the castle couldn't hear.Brow furrowed, trying to look confused, Harry quickly shut the books then stood and nodded.Motioning for Harry to follow, Minerva said, “We're needed in the Headmasters office.” With that, she swept out, sure Harry would follow. And she did not relish standing there and listening to Harry being told what went on. Though her lion had changed much over the years, she figured he was going to have plenty of problems when he learned what happened to his family.
Trying to look upset, Harry attempted to focus between the people from the DMLE that were talking to him, Minister Fudge, who had his hand on his shoulder, trying to act comforting and his solicitor. Shaking his head, he wasn't sure what to do or say as there was so much going on. What he was going for was looking blindsided, something he hoped he was pulling off.
Reaching up and running a hand through his hair when Madam Bones, the head of the DMLE finished talking, he asked, keeping his tone that of someone that was just unsure what to do, “The house is gone? My family is alright, aren't they? I mean, we don't get along, everyone knows that, and I don't like what they did to me, but I wouldn’t want them hurt.”“They are fine,” Amelia soothed. As the teenager was obviously upset, she explained, “We made sure they were seen by a Healer to reverse the effects of what happened. The house though—there was nothing we could do to save it. It was completely destroyed by the time we got there.”“It was Death Eaters? You're sure about that?” He asked next, glancing between everyone, seeing the strained faces.“We know they were dressed like that, but we aren't sure if they were real Death Eaters or if it was a trick,” Cornelius told him, giving his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “Don't panic, Mr. Potter. It might just be a case of someone pretending that's what they were to get even with you. You, yourself, have told me there are ones that would do that.”“I think all of us need to realize this was probably a real attack by Death Eaters, not people pretending,” Albus interjected. He had stayed quiet up to this point so he could hear everything that was said and formulate a plan to deal with the situation. Having heard that Vernon and Petunia refused to allow Harry back, he needed to deal with the situation quickly until he could get to where they were staying and nudge them in the right direction. Which meant he had to deal with Harry first, before he pulled something out that would make an already horrific situation all the worse to work with.Huffing and glaring at Albus, having figured that was coming at some point, Cornelius snarled, “We'll leave that determination up to the DMLE, Albus! It will do no good to have you spouting such speculation without facts to back it up. Until Madam Bones tells us to worry and it's real, we deal with the situation how it is. I think its best that we not get into some of your theories at this time. Mr. Potter has plenty of other concerns to deal with at the moment.”Shaking his head, still trying to look shell shocked, Harry wanted to throw that discussion as far off the track as he could. So, he pressed on to another part. “The Dursleys said I can't go back? That I'm kicked out?” This was the biggest part they needed, so he wanted to hone in there and get it moving.“I'm afraid so,” Cornelius said softly, shaking his head in a sad way. “We'll find something, Mr. Potter, never fear. From all you said, this isn't a great loss. It'll be handled, you have my word. I'll try to find somewhere for you live when you aren't in school.”“I think we should just give the Dursleys time to calm down,” Albus interjected, holding out a placating hand. He did not want Cornelius helping in this situation. If the man stepped in, there was no chance he could get Harry in the position he needed him in. That he couldn't chance. No, he needed it going his way. “Give them a few days and we’ll have people talk to them. I'm sure they will reconsider.”Harry was about to snarl at the old man, but didn't get the chance when his solicitor finally stepped in.“If you would, Cornelius and Amelia, I think we have something in place so I need the two of you to give an assist,” Solicitor Piper said, glaring at Albus. “If we could get a secure room, I can walk you through a solution we think we have. I would object most strenuously to my client returning to an abusive home, even if the heads of it agree to allow him back.”“I do agree,” Cornelius nodded, shooting a withering look at the protesting Albus. “So, a secure room where we can discuss this privately is needed. After all, we don't want some gossip spreading and it's a situation that's best handled quickly.”Sputtering, not liking that, Albus then sighed and said, “Minerva? If you would show them to the standard room, I would be most grateful.” Though he couldn't help now, he would most assuredly do something to stop whatever plans they had. After all, he had time to do that as the break wasn't here yet. It also meant he would get with Molly and Arthur to put a bug in their ear to take Harry in. He was sure Harry would jump at that chance. Plus, their influence would be what he required to get him moving back in the direction he needed. Yes, that could work nicely. It just meant some effort on his end, nothing more.
Grinning as he smoked, Harry handed the paper he was holding over to the highly curious Draco. Despite what McGonagall tried, it seemed that everyone in the castle knew that something big had happened. He assumed that a few who were doing whatever had seen the DMLE, Madam Bones, Minster Fudge and all kinds of others come in. Couple that with him being called to the Headmaster's office and everyone seemed to know he was involved. Good. Let them. He didn't care. All that mattered was it worked. He had the paperwork signed by the Minister of Magic himself and the head of the DMLE that he was temporarily emancipated pending a hearing. The final hearing would be in a week. Perfect. Just perfect.
Taking a drag off his fag, Draco read through the paper, grinning himself. When he finished, he passed it back to Harry. “Do I want to know how you managed to get that? I mean, being signed by Fudge and Bones, both, is huge.”“Some of it will probably make it into the paper tomorrow,” Harry told him, still grinning. “Most won't as it'll end up suppressed.” He then ran his friend through the attack on Privet Drive. Listening to Draco laugh when he finished, he said, “It worked. As of now, Dumbledore doesn't know about the emancipation. That's fine. It's something I'm sure will end up in the paper tomorrow as Fudge signed it and will want to look good. It's what we need, though. It sure as hell beats us trying to slog through the system to get it. I'm sure we would in the end, but this makes it easier.”“He is going to lose it, completely,” Draco laughed, referring to Dumbledore. “That will be great!” Sobering up, he asked, “How much did you have to do with what happened to your family?”Smirking sadistically, Harry said, “Let's say I got revenge on Vernon. You have no idea how long I've wanted that. Not only did I get the revenge, they acted just like we thought they would.” Stopping, he thought it over, gaze dropping to the stone floor. Shaking his head, he then flicked his butt away and said, tone soft, “I'm free from them, finally. There is nothing anyone can do to force me back to that hellhole. You have no idea how long I've dreamed about that.”Nodding, understanding completely, Draco said, keeping his voice level, “Dumbledore is going to try, Harry. You have to realize that. When this hits, he's going to pull out everything in his power to make you go back or trick you into it. That you need to stay wary of.”“Let him,” Harry told him, head coming up, voice a low snarl. “Just let him. He won't know what hit him if he does. I don't give a shite what he thinks he can do, he can't. I won't let him. This—it's gone on long enough and it's over. Piper won't let him pull out anything. Whatever he tries, he'll stop it. If I have to get Fudge involved, I will. He's already plenty unhappy with that old goat. I'm quite sure he won't have a problem doing something to stop whatever. It's done. This game with him is over. I've had enough. One week is all it's going to take and then there is nothing more he can do.”“Just stay alert for whatever in that week.” Draco schooled softly. Though he wasn't like his father when it came to legal matters, he knew enough. “Get an owl off to your solicitor about an injunction barring Dumbledore from trying anything. You have more than enough proof of what he's done to get it.”“That's something I'll do,” Harry told him, happy that Draco had mentioned it. As soon as he got back to the Abbey, he would send something off. He was sure Piper could come up with something.Nudging Harry as he lit another fag, Draco grinned again then said, “Details! I want them! Start talking, Potter!”Laughing, knowing what his friend was referring to, he began to describe what went on, making sure to include Lucius' involvement in it. After all, Draco would love to hear about that. Besides, it felt good to relive what he had done to those that had mistreated him for so long. Though, in the past, he would never have thought about doing such a thing to the Dursleys, just wanting away from them, the fact he got his revenge felt wonderful. The only thing that could have made it better was them knowing it was him. In time, maybe they would. He didn't know. This was good enough for now. After all, they not only got to feel his wrath, but lost everything. That was oh so sweet.
