Roark was frowning deeply as he entered his office, a heavy envelope, sealed and marked Top Secret, priority to Lieutenant Roark Peverell Potter, Colonial Counter-Intelligence, in his hand. Harry, sitting at his desk, working diligently away at his laptop, looked up as he entered, saw the look on his face, and frowned.
"Dare I ask?" he said, getting to his feet, as the others in the office working from their own laptops, stirred.
"I haven't opened it yet," he said by way of an answer as he crossed to his desk, dropping into his chair as Harry moved to the sideboard to make tea, "but would anyone care to wager a guess as to what THIS," he waved the envelope, "contains?"
They all dared to either grin or smile outright at him. "We leaned a long time ago to never take certain bets from either you or Harry," Desmond said, reaching out to snatch the waving envelope.
Opening it, he pulled out the clipped papers and began to read, the only sound any of them heard for a few microns {seconds} was the flip of paper when he finished a page. On the last page, he found a list of those that were coming.
"Um...mmm, just as we suspected they would do. Dad and Uncle Thorin have managed to pull in several Counter-Intelligence teams from their current assignments and get them cleared. They're sending them to us."
A deep sigh. "Of COURSE, they are," came back wryly as Harry handed him a mug of tea. "Damn it. We asked them NOT to send anyone else."
"You really didn't think they'd listen, did you?" Alexei answered, taking the papers from his brother and looking them over himself. "They are not about to let the six of us take on Riddle on our own, especially if we end up having to take Ardyn down as well."
"Which we all know we're going to have too. He has not been an easy nut to crack," Tyler said as Harry brought him some tea. He took the mug, giving him a nod of thanks, and sipped from it.
"No, I guess I didn't at that," he rubbed a hand over his face. "Damn. How much do you want to bet Logan and Kili are going to be with them? Despite the fact that they've been posted to the Galactica?"
Several deep chuckles sounded. "Now THAT, Roark Peverell Potter is one bet we will not be taking," Tyler said as he sipped again from his mug, humming his approval. Harry REALLY did make the best tea. "Just like you and Harry, and just like us, they don't like to leave a job undone, and this job is far from being finished." His head tilted slightly as he studied his face, his expression becoming serious and worried. "Rory--" he began only to be cut off.
"Get that look out of your eyes right now, Tyler Connor Durin. I am just fine."
He had to smile at his full use of his name even as he shook his head, sharing a look with an equally worried Severus, who had taken the papers from Alexei to look through them. He then looked over at Harry, who shrugged, his eyes on his brother's face.
"Listen, we aren't so sure," he told him quietly, moving to squat beside his chair, laying a hand on his forearm, and when he looked at him, saw just how tired he was. "You're tired, Rory, becoming just a little too worn down for my liking."
"Or mine," Severus said, looking up from the papers. "You aren't sleeping, Roark," he said, moving to lay the papers on his desk, "nor are you taking the pills, or drinking the potions I brewed and gave to you for just that problem."
"I agree with them completely, little brother," Harry spoke up softly, setting his tea down and turning to look at him. "You are NOT sleeping, and you have point blank refused to take anything that will help you TO sleep, and to make matters that much worse, you are beginning to look far too stressed for my liking."
"Or ours," came from the Durins as one, making them smile at each other, before returning their gazes back to Roark.
Roark sighed deeply, laying his head back against his chair. "Dreams," he murmured, his eyes closing against their worried gazes. "And none of them are none too pleasant."
"Your empathy has completely opened up," Jordan said.
Roark's eyes opened, his head lifting to look at him. "I don't think it's the empathy that's causing these dreams, but IF it is, then yes, I'd say it's fully open. I'm definitely feeling way more than I think I should be, and some of those feelings are not mine. There are other things...things that don't make any sense."
"Roark--"
"I know what you would like to say, Tyler, but you know I have no memory of Saggitara."
A deep, very unhappy frown curved several brows. "Those of us that were there remember more than enough, thank you very much."
"Ty, I--"
Tyler raised a hand to stop him. "Look, we get it, and believe us, Rory, we DO understand why you have no wish to remember, or to even discuss it whatever it was that led you to shut yourself down so completely. However, IF your empathy IS, in fact, completely opened, then whatever OTHER psychic gifts you have will follow. We're going to need Ethan and Rohan here to help you learn some control, as well as how to shield yourself so that you don't end up being too overwhelmed by excess emotion."
"Then it's a good thing both of them are on that list, as are Sebastien and Robin," Severus said. "I can begin some of the basics, maybe begin to work on getting him grounded and centered. He's so out of balance, it hurts to look at him. It's also no wonder his magic is beginning to fluctuate so badly."
Nods all around as Roark looked at each of them. "What would happen if I was overwhelmed by the emotions of those around me?"
"THAT is a part of why you don't remember Saggitara," Harry told him. "I don't think I have ever been so scared as I was the morning you wouldn't wake up, and Kobol how I tried to wake you. Ethan said you would eventually wake up, but it wasn't fast enough to suit me, even after we went home."
"And when you DID finally awaken, and we tried to talk to you about WHY you had shut yourself down...you told us you didn't know, that you didn't remember, and the more we asked, the angrier you got."
"As you know, the blocks and seals placed on you then have now failed. With them gone, there is nothing holding those gifts at bay. Becoming overwhelmed would not be a good thing to have happen. Unexpected things tend to happen. Severus," he turned, "what time does the shuttle arrive?"
"Tomorrow morning, seven hundred," he answered, throwing an amused look at Roark. "Not enough time for a certain someone to call home and complain to Dad and the others about sending them here." he glanced down at his watch. "They've already left Caprica."
"He can raise lots of complaints when they get here. Raphael and Schyler are on this list," Harry said with a chuckle.
"Well then, you and I had better be at the Spaceport, when they arrive, Harry."
A growl. "THAT means I have to get up early."
"You get up early every day, brother."
"Fine then, EARLIER."
"Ah...poor baby," he said, causing a round of laughter. "Come on, let's go see about getting that drug den on Wahren shut down. Then we can move on to that new illegal gambling hall just around the corner."
THAT perked Harry up. "Yes, let's," he said excitedly, rubbing his hands together.
"Grab your coats, boys. It's snowing again, and the temp has dropped to below freezing."
"I hate the cold," came Severus' grumble as he reached for the leather hanging by the door, followed by the others.
"You aren't the only one."
