CH 62 The truth about the Horcrux’s
Lou sat trying to concentrate on the book, while Severus laughed hysterically for the next ten minutes. In the end she gave up, his constant attempts to stop laughing, only to start again were distracting and she couldn’t give the book the attention it deserved.
“You’re really horrible do you know that. How was I supposed to know what rumpy was?”
Unfortunately her complaint only served to make him laugh more and she stormed into the kitchen in a huff. She couldn’t believe he could be so cruel as to laugh at her like this, not after all she’d been through.
“Not to be mad at the master miss. He is needing a way to vent his feelings too. He is not letting his feelings show like others, he is hiding them deep for many years now. Is catched up with him and he is letting them out for yous, he’s never doing that before. Tilly is knowing the master since he is being born, Tilly is knowing her master well. Is good he is like this, he is telling yous he’s loving yous yes?”
“Yes but …”
Then he is meaning it from the heart. Never is he saying that to anyone before, we’s all have our different ways of expressing us feelings, when theys held in as long as the masters, they is taking a long time to happen. You is understanding Tilly miss?”
“I think so Tilly, it’s just …hard at the moment to believe anything. But I suppose you’re right, I’ve laughed before, when what I really wanted to do was cry and scream my frustration to the world.”
“Today you is screaming it, just as the master is now, but in different way. Go to him miss, let him know you isn’t mad at him any more. He’s needing you as much as you is needing him. Tilly knows her master miss.”
When Lou stormed off, Severus began to calm down, then he started to wonder if he’d gone too far. He had not been able to help his laughter at her reaction when they discovered what rumpy was. But the laughter seemed to take him in it’s grip, like it had a life of it’s own and would not let go. He felt as though every negative emotion he’d ever felt was released with that laughter, leaving him almost cleansed. He frowned as that thought hit him, then he smiled, then he frowned again.
“LOU.” He called, jumping from his seat.
At the same moment, Lou ran back into the living room, her face wet with tears as what Tilly said finally hit her.
“SEVERUS.” She shouted at the same moment he shouted her name.
Both stopped in their tracks for a timeless second that felt like hours, even days, as their eyes met, their souls joined and their minds connected.
‘I love you.’ They both thought at time, each hearing the others unspoken words.
Severus opened his arms and Lou ran into them, both holding tight, neither willing to let go.
Tilly, Kreatcher and Pegnose stood and watched their respective master and mistress, they smiled a secret smile at each other before Kreatcher and Pegnose disappeared, and Tilly went back into the kitchen.
It was after supper that evening when either of them thought to pick up the book again. Both sat on the sofa for the whole afternoon. Wrapped in each others arms, occasionally moving stiff or deadened limbs, kissing, fondling, sleeping, but never losing contact with one another.
When Tilly woke them to say the food was on the table, they separated reluctantly to sit at the table and dine.
Severus noticed the book from the corner of his eye as they headed back to the sofa and picked it up. “Much as I would love to continue where we left off, I think we should consider looking at this.” He told Lou, holding the book no front of her.
Lou agreed and she settled back between his legs, much as they had the night he’d given her an orgasm while she slept, although at the time he hadn’t known she was asleep.
“This bit here look.” Lou told him, turning the pages to about one third of the way through the book.
sielulintu
Soul-bird. Carries the soul of a new born child, when the child becomes old and dies, sielulintu returns to remove the soul. If the person has led a good life, the souls is taken to another new born, thus given the chance to live again.
Tuonela
Should the person however be of evil mind and deed, the soul is taken to Tuonela, land of the dead. There it is held for eternity.
itse
Each soul is comprised of many different parts, twelve in all, and each part having it’s own personality. They are called the itse. Sometimes an itse can break free from the body and when seen, is known etiainen, or doppleganger.
henki
The person will also have henki. henki gives breath, circulation, blood and body heat. Without it, the body dies.
If a person forcibly ejects one or more itse from it’s person, (although this is rare) the nature and appearance of that person is affected. If not rescued by sielulintu, the itse will drift freely into the skies unless bound to an object. When forcibly ejected, the first itse to leave is love. This is followed by compassion, contentment, sympathy, passion, fear, vanity, avarice, malice, lust, anger and hatred. Only hatred can remain untouched in the body.
The itse’s and henki must all be joined as one in the body before the person can truly live or die. Should separation occur, only two who share a true love for one another may call the sielulintu to rejoin itse and henki together.
Both sat quietly for a while, contemplating what they read.
Severus read through it a second and third time before speaking. “Lou, the itse, you know of these?”
“Harry told me about the Horcrux’s, they contain the itse. The one Harry saw in the forest, feeding from the unicorn, that one was etiainen, Voldemort’s envy itse. The diary was sympathy, that too was etiainen, the locket was probably love because it was his mothers, the ring, compassion maybe or contentment. Harry said there were six Horcrux’s in all, each will contain itse, that means he still has the worst six still intact. Fear, vanity, avarice, lust, hatred, and anger. If you love me enough Severus, as I love you, we can call on sielulintu to return the missing etiainen only sielulintu can enter Tuonela and find them.”
Severus let out a long breath. “And if our feelings do not run deeply enough, what then?”
She sat up and turned to face him. “Severus, I know how I feel, I would never have gone through as much as I did otherwise, but you, sometimes, often, I’m not sure how you feel about me. You say one thing, then seem to change your mind. You tell me how you feel, really, honesty feel about me.”
“I feel …that you are still a child, which you are in many ways, not just years. Yet you are so much more besides, I know that I wish to have you with me for the rest of my life, that I would die before loosing you if you would have me. I know I would gladly give my life for you, if that is love, then yes, that is how I feel.”
Lou stared deep into his eyes, loosing herself in their depths. They held no coldness, no doubt, only a warmth that spoke of love.
“That’s settled then, we call on sielulintu, ask it to rescue the missing itse and return them to Voldemort.”
“This sielulintu, soul-bird I believe it says, do you know what it looks like?”
“A swan, all male swans are sielulintu.”
“So when the itse and henki are joined together, we do what?”
“Then you remove the collar, if our love is true, you won’t be hurt, not this time. We’ll still have to do that ceremony thing, so he shouldn’t suspect anything, but I’m willing to do it if you are.”
“You do realise that once the ceremony is complete, we shall be wed, regardless of the broken Binding? That if we both survive, the consummation will still have to take place?”
“I know.” She told him, her face red now. “But it’ll be stronger, don’t you see. If we feel …as we do, it’s so much more than the Binding in that other book.”
Lou showed him further passages in the book, explaining the power of bonding if a couples love for one another is equally matched, and deep enough to conquer all that is thrown in their path.
“Why did you not show me this book before now? We could have done things differently.”
“Because I didn’t know how you really felt about me. Sometimes you frightened me Severus, sometimes I thought you hated me. There didn’t seem any point in showing you this, not then. Only when I heard you say …think, that I’m your one true love, you took me by surprise, but that was when I thought about the book.
“Wait.” He said, turning a page. “It says here that even when the itse are removed for the final time, they can be found again if someone else calls for sielulintu. The itse have to be destroyed, otherwise they return to Tuonela, they can only be destroyed with the Sampo. Merlin this is hopeless Lou, everyone knows the Sampo does not really exist.”
Severus I have something else as well, something I never showed you before.”
He pulled himself into a sitting position. “What?” He asked.
“I have …Ihavethesampo.” She mumbled quickly and quietly.
“I beg your pardon?”
“I have the Sampo.”
“The what? Bloody hell Lou.” He shouted, looking at her wide eyed before lowering his voice to almost a whisper. “How? Where? You truly have it, as written in the Kalevala?”
“Mmm hmm. I took it from the last vault we went in. As soon as I saw it I knew what it was. I don’t even know why I picked it up really, I just knew I had to and I put it in my pocket when you and Albus weren’t looking. Right now it’s safe at Hogwarts. Kreatch looks after it for me.
You’ll need to have it in your pocket until I need it, I wont have any clothes on so I wont be able to hide it.”
“You have the Sampo. You actually have the Sampo.” He croaked, shock taking his voice away. “We have to get Albus back here now, we have to tell him.”
“Why?”
“Because for the last seventeen years we have all been led to believe that Potter must be the one to kill the Dark Lord, that is why the boy carries the scar. Voldemort himself gave him that when he tried to kill him as a baby. That damned prophecy, damn Trellawney, damn her.”
“Harry told me about that too, I think it’s a true prophecy Severus.”
“How can it be, you were not marked by the Dark Lord, he was already gone when you were born?”
“I know, but he was back when he sent that Deatheater who killed my dad. It was one of his Deatheaters who killed my mum. He didn’t leave me with a scar that shows Severus, but he sure as hell left me with a much deeper one. My birthday falls at the right time too, the prophecy didn’t give a year did it? Only a month. Don’t you see, it’s all falling into place now. I think I’m the one who has to kill him, not Harry.”
Lou suddenly realised what she’d said and put a hand to her mouth. “Oh God, I have to kill someone.”
“I am still calling Albus, he needs to know Lou, I believe he was planning on bringing Potter to the ceremony to possibly finish off the Dark Lord once your power had it’s way.”
Half an hour later, Albus sat eating supper with Lou and Severus, as they explained about Lou breaking the Binding, and the alternative she came up with. He read the book and looked at the couple despairingly.
“Lou, I am sorry but it is not possible.”
“Severus, I would have expected you of all people not to fall into such a trap. Legends are all well and good, but they do not save lives, I am sorry.” Albus said sadly.
“It’s not a legend.” Lou told him. “It’s here in this book, it belonged to my mums family, it’s true and we’re going to call for sielulintu, he’ll gather the itse from Tuonela and give them back to Voldemort, they will merge with his other itse and sielulintu will remove them again and give them to me. I’ll take his henki and he’ll die.”
“And then what Lou? You cannot destroy his itse, not without the Sampo, and therein lies the problem, it simply does not exist. I am sorry.” Albus told her.
“Yes it does.” She told him.
“No Lou, it does not. The Kalevala is a very old book I grant you, but it has never been proven that such a magical object has ever existed.”
“She has it Albus. Lou has the Sampo.”
Severus spoke quietly, but his voice was clear and Albus looked at him, wondering if his Potions Master-cum-spy, had finally lost the plot.
Lou called for Kreatcher again.
“You want Kreatcher should get you something Lou?”
“Yeah Kreatch, it’s time, do you mind bringing it now please.”
“If yous sure, Kreatcher brings it and waits, you is knowing they cant be touching it, is not safe for them. When time comes proper for using it, then only he can safely hold it with you.” Kreatcher told her, nodding his head in Severus’ direction.
“I understand Kreatch, I promise I’ll be careful.”
Kreatcher disappeared, only to return a few minutes later with something wrapped in a piece of course white linen. He stepped up to Lou and handed the object to her reverently. “Yous be careful Lou. Kreatcher is waiting till yous is done showing it, only minute or two. Then I takes it back to safe place.”
“Thanks Kreatch.” Lou said, placing the object on the table in front of her.
Lou looked at the two wizards, both powerful in their own right, one almost like a father or grandfather to her, the other, the only man who’d ever made her feel, made her want, and hunger, fear even as she was willing to do anything to make him care about her. The man who now admitted he loved her.
“It might be best if you both sat out of arms reach, like Kreatch said, it’s dangerous. I don’t want anything to happen to either of you. Please.” She added when neither of them moved.
Severus and Albus both moved from the table and sat together on the sofa. Close enough to see, but far enough away that they couldn’t reach out and touch the object she was about to unveil.
Lou removed the cloth to reveal what looked like a large pepper mill. It stood about 12 inches high, it’s circumference around 10 inches. Made of some strange metallic element that none of them recognised, it was a burnished gold colour, a shimmer of silver seeming to glow through it. The lid though was a myriad of colour. The colours merged and fused, separating and merging again with a life of their own.
“Oh Merlin.” Albus said, getting to his feet. “Is that really the Sampo? I would never have believed …”
“Albus no.” Severus barked, grabbing the Headmasters arm and pulling him back to the sofa. “You heard the warning. I know it draws you, it draws me too, but we must resist it’s pull.”
Lou looked up alarmed and placed the cloth back over the Sampo quickly.
Kreatcher stepped up and Lou passed it to him. Without a word, the elf and the Sampo were gone.
I …I’m sorry, I didn’t know it would have that kind of effect on you.”
“Do not be sorry Lou, I am the one who should apologise for not believing you, either of you. Was that truly the Sampo? It must have been, nothing else could make me feel as though my very soul was being drawn from me, wishing to leave me. Severus did you experience the same reaction?”
“I did. I must confess, I was glad to see it go. Why does it not affect Lou?”
“I can tell you that Severus.” Lou said. “The Sampo was forged for the Goddess Louhi, by the blacksmith Ilmarinen. It is written in the Kalevala.
"Ilmarinen, worthy brother,
Thou the only skilful blacksmith,
Go and see her wondrous beauty,
See her gold and silver garments,
See her robed in finest raiment,
See her sitting on the rainbow,
Walking on the clouds of purple.
Forge for her the magic Sampo,
Forge the lid in many colors,
Thy reward shall be the virgin,
Thou shalt win this bride of beauty;
Go and bring the lovely maiden
To thy home in Kalevala."
“Ilmarinen worked on the Sampo for 14 days.” Lou said.
“On one side the flour is grinding,
On another salt is making,
On a third is money forging,
And the lid is many-colored.
Well the Sampo grinds when finished,
To and fro the lid in rocking,
Grinds one measure at the day-break,
Grinds a measure fit for eating,
Grinds a second for the market,
Grinds a third one for the store-house”
“My mum named me for Louhi, she must have done that for a reason. I don’t know what that reason was, I haven’t read enough of the Kalevala to work it all out. But I can take Voldemort’s itse’s, I can grind four with the corn, four with the salt, and four with gold. My name Melaina, mum said I can bring light from the dark, he is the dark, when the collar is gone, his henki will die, the light will destroy what is left. It’s written in the third book I was left from my mum, a book that never ever made sense to me until now. This can only happen though, if I have the love of the one person who’s love I return. Severus‘.”
Albus left them a short while later and Severus and Lou made their way upstairs.
He halted when they reached his bedroom door. “Tilly.” He called.
“Yes master.” Tilly said.
“Prepare the guest room for Lou.”
When the elf had gone he turned to Lou. “It is no longer necessary for us to share a room, or a bed, you may have your own room now, until after the ceremony.”
Lou looked at him, disappointment written all over her face. “Do I have to? I feel safer when I’m with you, please Severus.”
“No. It was a condition of the Binding that we slept together, now that condition is removed, it is better we sleep apart. I may not be able to control myself if you were to come into my bed now Lou, and you are still under age, only when we are wed will it make a difference. Also the Dark Lord will want to discover for himself the truth of your virginity, if you are in my bed willingly, I will most likely fuck you and you will need to take the potion again to heal your hymen. Is that what you want?”
“I …I don’t want him to touch me, and I don’t want to keep getting my v …virginity back either, but I still feel safer with you.”
“Lou, I am the last person you would be safe with right now, for the reason I stated. Go to your own room, your things will be in there ready for you. Goodnight.” He told her.
Lou watched him walk into his room and close the door, she put her palm flat against the door for a moment, letting her fingers slide down until she lost contact with the wood. Only then did she turn to see Tilly waiting for her at the other end of the landing.
“This is being your room now miss, tills you is wedded to the master. Don’ts you be sad, the master is thinking of you when he gives you this room. Is for the best miss.”
