Chapter 62: Baby It's Cold Outside
The overwhelming feeling of dread seemed to follow Hermione all around. Now that she knew the plans of the Death Eaters, she started making her own plans. She never went anywhere without her purse with the extension charm that held everything she'd need if she and Thomas needed to escape quickly. She also was never seen without her son. No one really questioned her about it, because after all, she was his mum and her top priority. Hermione had also started putting advanced protection charms on Thomas. If there were any type of ambush on the manor, she wanted to make sure that Thomas would be safe.
She had been spending more time with Tom and his minions. It was amazing how much she'd picked up from their lazy chatter at lunch or dinner. Pretending to be caught up in her adorable son's antics had made for a great cover of appearing to not be paying attention to the table conversation. She'd always caught Tom watching her and Thomas. He would be casually talking to Lucius or Severus, when he would lazily look over at Hermione or his son, as if to make sure that they were still there and weren't going to disappear if he looked away. She would meet his eyes and he would give her a slow smile and then look proudly at his young son. You could see the many plans running through his head as he looked at Thomas. At times it scared her to think of her tiny baby growing up to be a fierce and deadly Death Eater. Despite the prophecy, Hermione would do everything in her power not to have her son grow up to be the next Dark Lord. But as of late, she'd been blocked from attending dinner with them. It was disconcerting to be left out of the loop. She felt like all of a sudden someone didn't trust her.
The other thing weighing on Hermione's mind was Lily and Harry's safety. For several days the thought of how to tell Lily what she had found, swirled through her mind. Because of this dilemma, Hermione had started taking daily walks through the manors gardens, despite the cold, winter weather outside. Soon she would be sending short messages to Lily with warnings. She couldn't live with herself if she didn't at least try to attempt warning her friend about the upcoming, planned slaughter of The Order. She only hoped that Dumbledore would get caught in the crossfire. How that man had caused her so much misery. If only those who totally trusted him realized what a menace he truly was.
Hermione was currently taking a stroll through the snowy paths of the expansive gardens. It had snowed last night and the whole world glittered as the sun kissed each bough and bush. Thomas was bundled up tightly being warmed by a charm. His rosy little cheeks curled up into a grin and he was laughing as he looked around at the snow-covered world. If only life could be as innocent and joyful as seen through the eyes of her baby son.
Hermione held a note for Lily in her hand. She knew she had to let her know the war was escalating. The brief note said…
Lily,
It's happening soon. The Death Eaters
are preparing to attack all Order
strongholds. Keep you and Harry safe.
H.
She added concealment charms on the note so only Lily could read its contents. If anyone else touched the note they would be badly burned, accompanied by large blisters that would last for weeks. She almost wished that James would get ahold of the note first. Hermione whistled and a red hawk came circling down from the trees. It landed on a nearby statue letting Hermione attach the note to his leg. Hermione whispered, "Thanatos, this is for Lily Potter's eyes only." Thanatos had made the journey before finding Lily with Hermione's knowledge of the Secret Kept house. The majestic hawk seemed to nod its head to Hermione then took flight, circled overhead and then was gone.
Looking around she scanned the gardens hoping that no one had seen her with Thanatos. She knew that the main body of Death Eaters, along with Tom, were secreted away in the "War Room", what she now was calling the grand dining room. They had been constantly holed up there day after day. All of their meals were taken there. Sometimes they even slept there as their late night strategy sessions lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Hermione had not eaten a meal or slept with Tom in two weeks. She'd also not be invited into the War Room or been able to listen in to any of their conversations. It made her angry and very anxious not knowing when everything would actually be happening.
When she had woken up again to Tom's empty, and cold side of bed she had made a decision. She would take a chance of sending a message to Lily. Sitting here day after day, and pacing the floors hour after hour, was not helping anyone especially herself. She felt a little like she was going crazy trying to think of a plan when she didn't have a clue of what the Death Eaters were planning. The signs seemed to be there though. The planning was intense and long. The small skirmishes with Order members had come to a complete halt. The tension in the air was immense and could be seen on the faces of Tom and his Death Eaters. Even Bellatrix when she stumbled out into the hallway seemed rather subdued, which was cause for concern in itself.
Hermione was shook from her thoughts by Thomas's wiggling. He wanted down in the snow and she saw no need to continue holding him. He had been dressed warmly in a baby snowsuit. She held Thomas's hands helping him to walk in the snow. He looked up at his Mum with great surprise.
"It's snow, little man." She bent down and pressed some of the snow against his cheek. He leaned away from her feeling the cold, but soon he reached out wanting to feel the cold with his own fingers. She took off his tiny mitten and he grabbed some of the snow. His little mouth formed a circle, and then he started to giggle. His laughter was contagious and Hermione started to laugh with him. There weren't many opportunities to laugh now days, She had to grab hold of them when they came, even small ones like this. Even with all of the stress of the upcoming battles, she loved this time in her life when her baby was discovering new things.
With one more look skyward, she hoped that her message would make its way safely to Lily. She scooped Thomas up out of the snow. "That's enough for one day son. You're looking a little like a snowman sweetums." Thomas put his arms around his mum's neck. "Let's go inside and warm-up." She put her cold nose against her baby's cold nose, giving him an Eskimo kiss. She didn't notice the lone onlooker peeking at her and Thomas from an upstairs window, watching them as they walked back through the gardens to the manor.

Lily had kept to her bedroom several weeks after fainting in Sirius's arms. She was thankful that James hadn't been there to witness Sirius holding her tightly after she had been revived. Sirius cradled her as she sobbed about all of her fears of the future and how she needed to protect Harry at all costs.
The bond between the two friends grew, as they decided they would not share any of this with James right now. His moods had gone from snippy to downright dangerous heights. Whatever The Order was having him do was changing his personality. He seemed to be changing into another person who was more sullen and gruff. James was so lost in his own grumpy world; he didn't notice the interactions between Sirius and Lily. Any other man would have thought there was something sexual happening between the two friends. But James went off every day, leaving Sirius and Lily at his house, without questioning what they were doing when he was gone.
Sirius had stated his case to Dumbledore that he being the Secret Keeper, would also stand as guard to Lily and Harry while James was gone. Lily had at first questioned James why Sirius couldn't be the one to leave and help The Order instead of him; but after being thoroughly chewed out by James at her question, she hadn't broached the subject again. In the long run it was better that Sirius was there, as most of the conversations involved Hermione.
"Sirius, maybe you should go off for a few days and see if you can get a few answers of what Dumbledore is planning." Lily was tired of just sitting around and waiting for the worst to happen.
Sirius sat with Harry in his lap making funny faces at his Godson. "Lily if I felt like it would help I'd be out of here now. I almost feel like I'm being shut out of what is being planned." Baby Harry laughed as Sirius continued making the silly faces.
Lily shook her head at her friend. He always seemed to know how to make things better. "Sirius you're going to make him throw up if you keep doing that." But she couldn't help but laugh herself at how foolish he was acting. A scratching at the window interrupted the happy moment. Lily ran to open the window and a red hawk flew in and landed by her feet. She recognized the hawk as belonging to Hermione. He had brought previous notes from her in the past. It stuck his leg out with the attached note. Carefully she untied the note and offered the hawk a treat sitting nearby. He sat eating in silence, as if waiting for a reply. With shaking hands she opening up the note and read,
Lily,
It's happening soon. The Death Eaters
are preparing to attack all Order
strongholds. Keep you and Harry safe.
H.
With a gasp she dropped the note, grabbed Harry and hugged him to her. Sirius jumped up and read the note. "Bloody Hell! Is this from Hermione?" All Lily could do was nod, as she held back the tears that threatened to start flowing.
"Why is she warning you about this? What kind of game is she playing? She's living in the Death Eater's camp but she's…is she a spy?" Lily felt just as confused as Sirius looked.
"Sirius, she's my friend." Lily dropped onto the sofa with Harry still being held protectively in her arms.
"How does she know all of this? I wish that she had never gone back to her Death Eater," Sirius said with antagonism. "But the bigger problem is how do we tell The Order about this without mentioning Hermione? She's made Dumbledore her enemy and James isn't fond of her either, " he spat out with sarcasm.
Lily sat there shaking her head. "I don't know Sirius. I really don't know what to do. She went to the trouble of endangering herself to let us know."
Sirius stood up, starting to pace back and forth, "So we at least need to let James know. We can't let people die knowing that we were warned about this and did nothing."
Sirius went into the kitchen, coming back with paper and a Muggle pen. "We need to contact Hermione and let her know we got her note. Maybe we should tell her to come back. I don't think she and Thomas are safe there."
Lily shook her head, "I don't think it's even safe to send her a note back. That could be a death sentence for her Sirius."
Without looking at her, Sirius started writing,
H.
Note acknowledged. Please come back where
It's safe.
S. and L.
He handed the note to Lily, who read it and handed it back with a nod. "I pray to God that she is kept safe and won't be stung by trying to help us."
Sirius tied the note onto the hawk's leg, opened the window and the bird flew out and away. "Now the hard part…telling James and The Order that the Death Eaters will be on the move soon. I wondered why the bastards hadn't been playing with us the past month and now we know."
He walked over to Lily, pulling her and Harry into a comforting hug. It would take every God out there to keep them safe and alive once the deadly battles started.

Can you feel the intensity starting to build in the story? I can as I write it! I'd love to know how you're feeling about how things are starting to play out. Who'll die? Who was it looking at Hermione and did they see her sending off the note? Please review! See you next time!
