Chapter 61
Beta'd by Tenchi (love you, woman!)
With help from Lynn.
Summoning tea for both himself and Harry, Sirius flopped back in his chair and waited until Harry took his first sip. It was early, far more than usual when he needed to get with his godson, but he needed to talk to him right away as he knew Harry had a damned busy day. There was something about an appointment with his solicitor and other needed bits to take on, so he wanted this out there now before it got lost in the muddle.
After taking a bracing sip of his tea, Harry groaned then asked, “What did you need, Sirius?” He assumed it was important, so he wanted it out of the way before he had to go tend to plenty else that required him to seriously focus. There was still a very delicate dance coming and he needed to stay alert for it.“I need you and Tom to work out how I'm going to word something and to give you fair warning that it's coming so a certain old man can't manipulate you with it,” Sirius told him softly. Now completely focused on Sirius, Harry asked, “What's that?” He assumed it had something to do with the upcoming hols, but wanted to be sure before he started working on it.“I'm turning Albus down on the visit. Not sure what excuse I'm going to give as he would knows that I would do almost anything to see you, but I'm not chancing this. I don't want you in that position and I don't want to be in it either. Remus had made it clear to me in his last letter that he's not showing up either. So, I want that out there before he pulls something. As panicked as he has to be about what all of you pulled last night, this could end up disastrous. So, if you two can come up with something for me, I'd appreciate it. Let me know what it is so I can get this off as fast as I can manage. We all need that out there before the worst hits so he can't pull something else to draw us in.” That's where Sirius stopped and waited.“We'll come up with something first thing this morning,” Harry assured him, knowing that did need to come. “Before I have my appointment. Then I'll get it to you. Just be damned careful how you go about it. At this point—Sirius, I doubt he would have a problem putting you in danger to get me going how he wants. Or blackmailing you to do what he wants you to. He's—I doubt there is anything he's not willing to try at this point.”“Something I've been thinking myself,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head. “Don't worry, I'll manage. My thought was to send it to Remus and he can pass it along. That way there is no direct link to me that he can trace. I get I'm protected here and have the glamour, but I don't want to chance anything at this time.”“Good plan. Let's see what we can do. Give us some time. I'll put this at the top of the list this morning to handle. From what I know, I don't think there's much truly urgent that we need to take on.” Harry sighed, mentally going over what was waiting for them. After thinking about it, he shook his head and groaned, thankful he didn't come up with much they did have to handle right off. Looking at Sirius, he said, “Even with the glamour, I think its best you stay on your toes, Sirius. I'm not going to say don't go have a pint here and there, as we all need time off and to get out of here once in a while, I'm just going to say watch your back. We're about to take plenty out of the old man's hands and stop him in his tracks with other bits we're going for. That's going to cause him to panic and step up plenty.”“Don't worry about me,” Sirius assured him. “I know what I'm doing and am always cautious.” Sighing, he asked, tone wary, “Do I want to know what you're planning to pull out?”“I've got a week before the hearing that will get me emancipation. What we don't need is for that old goat to pull some hare-brained stunt between now and then, so one of the things we're doing this morning is having Piper file an injunction barring Dumbledore from doing anything that might be considered 'messing' with the situation or trying to manipulate it. As it's magically enforced, that should stop almost all of it. I'm sure he'll try other ways, such as nudging people in the direction he wants them to go without actually kicking them there, figuring that would get it moving, but we need him stopped before he pulls something out we'll have a bitch of a time countering.” Then, grinning, Harry added, “And getting the marriage license. We won't do anything with that until after break starts, but we want it, now.”Nodding as he took all of that in, Sirius told him, “You stay on your damned toes at school, Harry. I mean it. When he gets that injunction, if you can get it as those are a bitch to obtain, he's going to pull shite out that is so off the wall that you won't know it's coming. And he's going to have no problem getting others to emotionally blackmail you in some way. Minerva may even give it a shot.”Seeing Harry look at him, Sirius said, “I mean it, Harry. He's going to pull shite out you couldn't have ever dreamed of as he knows that's another huge step in you backing away and it's going to panic him in ways that other bits haven't. From what you've said, you've stayed neutral in plenty and played along with other stuff, so this is going to show you're not. Some might chalk it up to you just being blindsided at the moment and somewhat not sure what to do, thus following what others think is best for you, but he's not going to see it that way.”Taking that as sound advice, Harry nodded to him. “Not to worry, I'll stay alert for anything stupid or odd. Then I’ll handle it from there or wiggle around.”“You and Tom are going to do the deed then?” Sirius asked softly, knowing the two were leaning there.“We are,” Harry said with a real smile. “Over Yule break. The license will be in his Nick name, but we're doing it. It's more protection, for one, as that truly makes me a real adult. Even then, as my age is an issue with some areas even with the emancipation, that will make Nick my guardian. It can only help, Sirius, as I can't get you in that position.” Smile growing, he added, softly, “And it's what we want. It really is. I know it's not something you get, but—I love him and he loves me. This is the natural progression of that.”Hanging his head, Sirius thought about how to word what he wanted to say. After a few moments of silence, he told Harry, once more lifting his head and looking at him, “While I don't like who he is or what he does, and we won't even get into the last war, I understand and support you. If this is what you want and it makes you happy, it's fine with me.” Smiling as he saw Harry grin, he added, “The only thing I ask is that I'm allowed to be there with you.”Unable to stop grinning, Harry nodded, “I wouldn't have it any other way, Sirius. In fact, I want you to stand up with me. It's tricky, I get it, but we'll manage the same like we are with Tom's real name.” Of all the things so far, this is the one that made him the happiest. As long as Sirius was there and gave his approval, though he didn't need that, he would be happy.
After listening to what Harry had to say when it came to Black, Tom nodded slowly then groaned. “We'll come up with something he can send off today. I think we'll compose it the best we can then hand it over to him so he can rewrite it in his own words. Its good he thought of that, though. Yes, we need him out of the equation. To find an excuse, though, is the rough part. That I'm not sure of when it comes to what we can use that will sound viable. After all, he would generally do about anything for you, even tolerating that place.”
“His excuse now is looking for Wormtail,” Harry said, thinking it over himself. “With all that's going on and what's in the paper today, I don't think that's a good enough one anymore. He'd want to be with me because of so much.”Fingers drumming on the desk as he pondered the situation, Tom then smirked. Smoothly, trying not to chuckle, he said, “I vote we just tell the old fool the truth; that he's going to stay with you and Nick. If we play this right, it can work. We'll just give it a few days before he sends the letter. He can tell Albus that you got in touch, wanted him there because of all that's gone on and he accepted. That wouldn't seem odd to anyone that knows either of you.”Grinning at that, Harry nodded. “Perfect! And with what's bound to come over break, it would look even better. No shot he would miss me getting married, after all. Though it might drive the old man mental to think I'm telling Sirius plenty he doesn't know, that can only help as well.”“Oh yes,” Tom agreed with a smirk, taking notes on what should go into the letter. If Black got the main points in there, something he was sure the man could manage and make sound good, they would be fine with this. “I'll have you take this to him before we go and let him work on it. Tell him he has a few days to get it right. You can check it over when he's done, of course, to make sure he doesn't give too much away, but it should be fine. Just what we need and he doesn't have to lie. We just need it to wait until after some of this other stuff hits.”Leaning back in his chair, pleased that a troublesome bit was off their plate and about to be handled the right way, he asked, “Aside from the obvious, what are we dealing with when it comes to Piper? I do agree with what Draco said and that injunction needs done, fast. My thought is Albus is already cooking up plenty.”“Those are the big ones,” Harry told him. “Not sure how fast he can manage the injunction, but we need it done swiftly. I can stay on my toes, of course, especially since Snape can give me any heads up I need on anything he hears, but I want the most obvious ways stopped, now.” Leaning back and folding his arms over his chest, Harry asked, “Generally, how fast can someone get these through? Do you know? Because it needs to be in place, now.”Blowing out a breath, Tom thought that over then said, “It depends. Most times it's under a week. If the circumstances are right, they can do it in a day.” Looking at Harry, Tom smirked and added, “With all that went on last night, the shenanigans Albus has pulled over the years, how he knew so much, all of that, I'm sure Piper can get the thing today. All he'll have to do is pull a couple very minor strings, if he has to at all. These go through Madam Bones, not the Wizengamot itself. She was there last night, so she knows what's going on. I don't see where it's going to take much. Let him do what he's best at. However, I'm going to make sure the deck is stacked the best I can when it comes to your emancipation. It's not that I think anyone would not rule in favor of this, but I want to make damned sure. So, I'll pull some strings, set Lucius to the task of working on Fudge and all else I can. We're getting this and as fast as we can. Just make sure you stay as alert as you can for anything people might try to pull. That temporary order will only protect you so much.”“Understood,” Harry nodded, brow furrowed. Sighing, he admitted, “I'm worried what he's going to pull and I'm damned sure that the Weasley's might end up tossed into this. As Sirius said; emotional blackmail is probably coming from many fronts. That I can handle as I've dealt with worse, but you might want to get a message off to both Thor and Snape to keep an eye and ear out for me. They can get in touch quickly if there is something wonky.”Making a note about that, Tom nodded. “I'll handle that as well. Today in fact. Just make sure that you keep an eye out.” Tossing the quill down, he rubbed his hand over his mouth and said, tone distracted, “Let's see what Piper can do to press getting that hearing bumped up and done in secret. He can get you out of the castle when he has to without anyone being able to do a damned thing about it, but the faster we get this done, the better off we're going to be, Harry.”“We'll impress that on him the best we can.” Harry agreed, mind already working on how bad this could get when it came to what he was dealing with in the castle.Fingers once more starting to drum on the desk, Tom scanned what was there then said, “I do understand that you can handle yourself. That's been made more than obvious to me. I also get that Sirius, though he helps, is just someone that is an extra set of eyes in looking out for you, but I am now wondering if we don't need a few in the castle to watch your back. Severus and Thor can't do that as it would be too suspicious. Maybe it's time to call in a few that are loyal to me that are students to see if they can start shadowing you. Draco comes to mind with that. The two of you share plenty of classes, so he can tend to that easily enough. The relationship the two of you keep appearances with can aid it as well. It can look like he's resuming part of the rivalry by appearing to plot.”Other than Thor when it came to people in that damned castle, Draco was the only one he truly trusted to watch out for him. Giving a slow nod after he thought it over, he said, “Compose something and I'll deliver it to him tonight. The others—you might want to go through Severus to do that if they are Slytherin. They'll listen to him more as they don't know my position with you yet, though they've seen enough.”“We'll do just that,” Tom told him, straightening up, taking notes with the names he wanted involved and just what to say. “When we get back, we'll work on this as I want it in place as fast as we can get it.”“Understood,” Harry nodded. “Just so I know who I'm dealing with, I'll be fine and make sure some of the stupider ones in my house don't take it in their heads to try something dumb.”“That we do need,” Tom snorted, shaking his head. He knew what some of the Gryffindors were like and he was sure they would try to 'rally around' Harry after some of what was in the paper, so he wanted that minimized the best he could get.
Looking at the official Ministry injunction that was just delivered to him, Albus groaned then put it down on the desk with a trembling hand. While he knew Solicitor Piper was very good at what he did, he hadn't expected the man to take it this far. Which meant that he had to stay wary, not only for other pieces like this, but what else might be in the works. He was sure this was only the tip of the iceberg. From what he heard already from his very limited sources in the Ministry, they were pushing for full emancipation for Harry. And they were going to get it from what he was told. More not good.
Tapping his foot, thinking, he decided it was time to act, quickly. This would move fast because of who was involved and he needed some serious push to get it going his way. That meant using the leverage that he had at hand.Standing with a groan, he walked over to the Floo then began calling who he needed.
Looking at the paper that Albus showed them then listening to what went on the night before, Molly, Arthur and Minerva all settled back in their chairs, various looks of concern on their faces.
While Albus hadn't said anything about what he wanted from them, Molly told the aging Headmaster, “We'll make the offer for Harry to come live with us. This is—yes, he needs somewhere that he's cared for.”As he couldn't interfere, he couldn’t suggest anything outright, but he was hoping that even showing them what was going on and explaining, that they would move the right way. That was holding true. “I think Harry would appreciate that,” Albus told her with a smile, smoothing down his beard. He thought that poor Harry would jump at this, especially after the life he had led. After all, he was sure that's why the young wizard was clinging to that Nick. He needed him away from the man, honestly, and thought this might help with that.“We'll write him a letter today and extend the offer,” Arthur told him honestly, shaking his head in a sad way. “Let's see what he says then we'll go from there.”“I think, perhaps, a word from all those he's close with to give him some support in this trying time is also a wise idea,” Albus told everyone, though focusing on Minerva there. It was one thing to have letters written saying that, but another for her to pull them aside and suggest it.“I'll do what I can,” Minerva nodded, planning to take on that task the first chance she had. She heard enough the night before to know that Harry was probably now a young man that needed plenty of support.“I think we need to make sure he has a special Christmas this year,” Molly sighed, shaking her head sadly. “And surround him with people he knows care about him.”“I'm trying to organize something at Grimmauld Place,” Albus assured her. “Remus can't come as he's busy tending to something, but I've got an owl off to Sirius. I'm sure he'll come, especially after he hears this bit of news. Then I can make sure plenty are in and out that will make certain poor Harry has a Happy Christmas.”“We'll plan on staying there, then,” Arthur smiled. Looking at the paper again, not understanding why Harry would do that, he asked, “How much do you think that injunction has to do with Harry and how much of it is it political?”Thinking over how to word that, Albus sighed, “I'm sure that, with what I know of Solicitor Piper's relationship with Cornelius, that there is plenty of politics involved. While Piper is doing what he thinks is best for his client, I'm sure Cornelius is factoring in heavily. Minerva can attest to how he stepped in last night and pushed for plenty.”“Harry doesn't need used in political maneuvering,” Arthur said with a shake of his head. “That won't help anything. We do understand that what was in the paper over the summer was something Fudge wanted to cling to so it would help him, but going about it this way is wrong. Let's see what Molly and I can manage to get him away from that train of thought and see the bigger picture.”“That would be most helpful,” Albus told him with a smile, thinking it was perfect. He wasn't sure on Harry's stance with much of anything anymore, but he did know he held the Weasleys in high esteem.“Do we have any clue what's going to happen with Harry now? And where he'll go?” Minerva asked, wondering about that as it was something that would probably come into play fast.Giving a sad sigh, Albus told her, “It's sounding like, as least from what sources are telling me, emancipation. While that might be a very good idea, there is his safety to worry about.”“Yes, we'll do what we can there. Harry can stay with us as long as he needs to,” Molly told him, sounding determined. “He's in too much danger to stay on his own. I do understand this Nick is someone he adores, but none of us know the man or how safe his home is. We've heard what Harry's said, of course, but it's best he's with someone that knows how dangerous this time is.”“Maybe you can recommend that Sirius turn Grimmauld Place over to him?” Arthur suggested, looking between the faces there. “We all know it's in horrible shape, but it would be his and he would be plenty safe there. With how Sirius feels about the place, I don't imagine that he'll balk at it.”Not having thought about that, though liking the idea because it would give not only Harry a home, but its connection with Sirius, Albus told him, “Let me see what I can manage. I'm sure that Sirius won't take issue.” If all went well, he could probably manage that over the break and it wouldn't be in violation of the injunction.“We'll see what we can do with this, Albus, don't worry.” Molly told him determinedly. Shaking her head, she sighed, “Poor Harry. He's been through so much only to have more piled on. He doesn't need this. If he could only have one year where things went smoothly.” Huffing, she added, “Someone won't let him, though.”Changing topics, Arthur asked, trying to stay vague, “Any idea what the attack meant?”“That I'm not sure of yet,” Albus admitted honestly. “Give me a few days to figure it out. Once I know something, we'll have a meeting to sort out what we can. I do think that poor Harry's situation needs to come first, though, and many reassurances that he's not alone in this world. While his relationship with the Dursleys was contentious at best, this has to be a dire blow and he'll be reeling from it.” This was good, though. He didn't have to violate or dance close to doing so when it came to that official order, but people were moving in the direction he needed them to go. Now he had to wait to see Harry's reaction and hope he had enough time that he could get this in place before something happened he couldn't counter. As he listened in to the three that were in his office, he made a mental note to not only send another owl to Sirius with the suggestion, giving him a rundown of what happened, but prod a few connections in the Ministry to see what he could do to hold off the hearing. If he could manage that, he might have a better chance at getting Harry in a place where he could end up better influenced. With what the relationship was like with Harry at the moment, that was something he desperately needed.
